The Microsoft MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) course is a recognised route for anybody thinking of getting into supporting networks. Whether you want to join the IT industry or have previous knowledge but want to formalise that with a good qualification, you can find the right training.

Each option requires different material, so ensure you’re on the right training programme in advance of making a start. Search for a company that’s willing to understand you, and what you’re trying to achieve, and will furnish you with the information you need to decide.

Now, why should we consider commercial qualifications as opposed to traditional academic qualifications taught at schools, colleges or universities?

Key company training (in industry terminology) is more effective in the commercial field. Industry has realised that specialisation is what’s needed to service the demands of an increasingly more technical commercial environment. CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA are the key players in this arena.

Academic courses, for example, become confusing because of a great deal of background study – with a syllabus that’s far too wide. This prevents a student from understanding the specific essentials in enough depth.

It’s a bit like the TV advert: ‘It does what it says on the tin’. Employers simply need to know what areas need to be serviced, and then match up the appropriate exam numbers as a requirement. Then they know that anyone who applies can do the necessary work.

Traditional teaching in classrooms, involving piles of reference textbooks, is usually pretty hard going. If this sounds like you, dig around for more practical courses that are on-screen and interactive.

Studies in learning psychology have shown that we remember much more when we involve as many senses as possible, and we get physically involved with the study process.

Modern training can now be done at home via interactive CD and DVD ROM’s. Instructor-led tutorials will mean you’ll take everything in via their teaching and demonstrations. Then it’s time to test your knowledge by interacting with the software and practicing yourself.

Any company that you’re considering should willingly take you through a few samples of the type of training materials they provide. Expect video tutorials, instructor led classes and many interactive sections.

Opt for CD and DVD ROM based physical training media every time. You can then avoid all the difficulties of internet connection failure and issues with signal quality.

It’s clear nowadays: There’s very little evidence of personal job security now; there’s only market and sector security – as any company can let anyone go when it meets their commercial needs.

But a sector experiencing fast growth, where staff are in constant demand (through a big shortfall of properly qualified people), creates the conditions for real job security.

The 2006 UK e-Skills analysis demonstrated that more than 26 percent of IT jobs are unfilled as an upshot of a chronic shortage of appropriately certified professionals. So, for every four jobs that are available around IT, employers are only able to find certified professionals for three of the four.

This disquieting truth highlights the requirement for more commercially certified Information Technology professionals throughout the United Kingdom.

In actuality, seeking in-depth commercial IT training throughout the coming years is likely the greatest career move you’ll ever make.

The somewhat scary thought of finding your first computer related job can be made easier by training colleges, through a Job Placement Assistance facility. The honest truth is that it’s not as hard as some people make out to land a job – once you’re trained and certified; because there’s still a great need for IT skills in the UK today.

Nevertheless, avoid waiting until you have qualified before polishing up your CV. As soon as you start studying, enter details of your study programme and place it on jobsites!

Having the possibility of an interview is far better than not even being known about. A decent number of junior support roles are bagged by people (who’ve only just left first base.)

You’ll normally experience quicker results from a specialist independent regional employment service than any course provider’s national service, because they’ll know local industry and the area better.

A slight grievance of a number of training course providers is how much people are prepared to study to become certified, but how un-prepared that student is to get the job they’ve acquired skills for. Don’t give up when the best is yet to come.
