* Do you really want the chance of letting yourself be ignored for potential advancement or wage increases just because you’re retraining.

* It’s very common for people to not ask questions they want answered – just down to the fact that they’re amongst other classmates.

* For students working away from home occasionally, you face the added difficulty that days in-centre now become very hard to attend – and yet, the fees were paid along with everything else at the start.

A more flexible training route is to employ pre-filmed workshops in the comfort of your own chosen environment – taking them when it’s convenient to you – not some other person.

Study from home on your desktop computer or out in the garden on your laptop. If you’ve got questions, then get onto the live 24×7 support (that you should have insisted on for any technical study.)

In all honesty, the perfect answer is to get an idea of what they recommend as an ideal study order, but get everything up-front. Meaning you’ve got it all if you don’t manage to finish as fast as they’d like.

Beware of putting too much emphasis, like so many people do, on the accreditation program. Training for training’s sake is generally pointless; this is about employment. You need to remain focused on where you want to go.

It’s not unheard of, for instance, to get a great deal of enjoyment from a year of study only to end up putting 20 long years into a tiresome job role, as an upshot of not doing some decent due-diligence at the beginning.

You also need to know what your attitude is towards earning potential, career development, and if you’re ambitious or not. It’s vital to know what industry expects from you, what particular certifications are needed and where you’ll pick-up experience from.

Seek help from an experienced advisor who ‘gets’ the commercial realities of the area you’re interested in, and who can offer ‘A typical day in the life of’ outline of what kinds of tasks you’ll be undertaking day-to-day. It’s sensible to discover if this is the right course of action for you well before you jump into the study-program. There’s little point in starting to train only to find you’ve taken the wrong route.

One of the most important things to insist on has to be full 24×7 support from trained professional instructors and mentors. Too many companies will only offer a basic 9am till 6pm support period (maybe later on certain days) with very little availability over the weekend.

Email support is too slow, and telephone support is usually to a call-centre which will take the information and email an instructor – who will call back over the next day or so (assuming you’re there), when it’s convenient to them. This is all next to useless if you’re stuck and can’t continue and only have a specific time you can study.

Keep looking and you’ll come across professional companies who provide their students direct-access online support at all times – no matter what time of day it is.

Don’t compromise with the quality of your support. The vast majority of students that drop-out or fail, are in that situation because of support (or the lack of).

OK, why is it better to gain commercially accredited qualifications rather than more traditional academic qualifications obtained from tech’ colleges and universities?

With 3 and 4 year academic degree costs becoming a tall order for many, plus the industry’s increasing awareness that corporate based study most often has much more commercial relevance, we have seen a dramatic increase in Microsoft, CISCO, Adobe and CompTIA accredited training paths that supply key solutions to a student at a fraction of the cost and time involved.

Patently, a necessary portion of background knowledge has to be learned, but essential specialised knowledge in the particular job function gives a vendor educated person a real head start.

What if you were an employer – and your company needed a person with some very particular skills. What is easier: Trawl through loads of academic qualifications from hopeful applicants, having to ask what each has covered and which trade skills they’ve acquired, or choose particular accreditations that precisely match your needs, and then select who you want to interview from that. Your interviews are then about personal suitability – rather than establishing whether they can do a specific task.

It’s abundantly clear: There really is absolutely no personal job security now; there can only be market or business security – companies can just remove anyone if it fits their commercial requirements.

Where there are growing skills shortages coupled with growing demand though, we can discover a new kind of market-security; where, fuelled by conditions of continuous growth, organisations struggle to find the number of people required.

Offering the IT industry for example, the most recent e-Skills analysis demonstrated a national skills shortage in Great Britain around the 26 percent mark. It follows then that for every 4 jobs available around Information Technology (IT), organisations are only able to locate properly accredited workers for three of the four.

Achieving the appropriate commercial computer certification is thus a fast-track to achieve a continuing and pleasing profession.

We can’t imagine if a better time or market circumstances could exist for gaining qualification for this swiftly increasing and evolving sector.

Many men and women presume that the school and FE college path is the right way even now. Why then are commercial certificates slowly and steadily replacing it?

Industry now recognises that to learn the appropriate commercial skills, official accreditation from the likes of Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe is closer to the mark commercially – saving time and money.

Clearly, a certain quantity of closely linked detail needs to be taught, but core specifics in the required areas gives a vendor educated student a massive advantage.

It’s a bit like the TV advert: ‘It does what it says on the tin’. The company just needs to know what they’re looking for, and then request applicants with the correct exam numbers. Then they’re assured that a potential employee can do exactly what’s required.

Far too many companies focus completely on the certification process, and forget why you’re doing this – which is a commercial career or job. Always start with where you want to get to – don’t make the vehicle more important than the destination.

Don’t let yourself become part of the group that choose a course that sounds really ‘interesting’ and ‘fun’ – only to end up with a qualification for something they’ll never enjoy.

You’ll want to understand what industry will expect from you. What exams they’ll want you to gain and how you’ll build your experience level. Spend some time assessing how far you’d like to get as often it can present a very specific set of certifications.

Validated exam preparation and simulation materials are essential – and really must be obtained from your training provider.

Be sure that your practice exams aren’t just asking you the right questions in the right areas, but are also posing them in the exact format that the real exams will ask them. This really messes up people if they’re met with completely different formats and phraseologies.

As you can imagine, it’s essential to know that you’re completely ready for the real exam prior to going for it. Going over simulated exams will help to boost your attitude and helps to avoid unsuccessful attempts at exams.
