Are you thinking of having a party? It could be a birthday party or an anniversary for yourself or a friend or it could only be because you want to have a party. Pool parties are fantastic in the summer, yet, not everyone has a pool and it is not always summer, is it? Did you know that many spas will allow you to hold a party on their premises?

That would be fantastic as well, would it not? Having access to the heated pool, the hot spas and Jacuzzis, the steam room or saunas or Turkish bath. I am not certain that I would be interested in working out at the gym at a party though! A stomach full of cake and lemonade would not work well when working on your abs.

If you are interested in holding a party at a local spa, the first thing to do is locate a local spa that allows the holding of private parties. This is simple enough. Most spas will have a web site which has all the facilities listed on it. So either do a search on the Net for ‘spas in xxxxx’, where xxxxx is the name of your town or look under spas in Yellow Pages yet then use the names to look for the web sites.

There are a couple of things that you need to check next, but first create a list of what facilities you would like to enjoy at your party. Do you want it to be private or open to all? Do you want to let children in? Does everybody have to dress the part or can individuals (older people perhaps) wear street clothes? Is alcohol available and can you take drinks into the jacuzzi?

Once you have your list of requirements and appropriate dates, you are in a position to look for fitting locations. Once you find the nearest fit to your requirements, phone them up and ask if they will allow all your needs. It might not be a problem for them.

How many people are going to be at your spa party and who is going to pay? Well, it depends on the party actually. Say a bride-to-be wants to go to the spa with her bride’s maids before the wedding; the bride should pay.

What if five friends start a night on the town at the spa? Everyone pays their own way.You can discuss a discount at a great deal of spas if over five or six individuals attend as a group, but that discount might not be large.

A spa party is a fantastic day out whatever the reason for the party, and they are very flexible. You could hire the whole spa for two or three hours for mum’s fiftieth and meet up in the bar afterwards or you could use the spa party as a precursor to going on somewhere else. One thing is for sure, you will feel at your best and up for anything when you walk out of the spa party.

Most people just let their garden mature naturally in that they do not select a particular style. This is all right, but it can become a hodge-podge, if not looked after. Some people, however, consciously choose to landscape their garden according to a certain style or a theme. Some of these themes are very sophisticated and others are quite simple.

One of the many themes to pick from is the Texas Style. We all know that everything in Texas is done on a grand scale, so you would be excused for thinking that landscaping in the Texas Style would necessitate a large garden.

It is perhaps easier to carry out your landscaping in the Texas Style in a bigger garden, but it just depends how you go about it.

The first things to remember are that Texas is very hot and so the terrain closely resembles wilderness. Plants and shrubs are thin on the ground, so to speak. Landscaping in the Texas Style is what you could call minimalist gardening.

You will have to make use of every square inch of your property, if you only have a small plot and the climate will have to be fairly warm in the daytime although it is good if it gets cold at night. This will allow you to grow many of the plants that thrive or at least grow in Texas. One good thing about Texan flowers is that when they do blossom, they really do show a lot of colour.

One of the kinds of plant that you are sure to have success with is the cactus. There are many varieties of cactus, so you should not have too much difficulty finding several kinds that will grow in your garden in order to produce a Texan dry climate look, as long as it does not rain every other day where you reside.

Cacti yield spectacular flowers when they bloom, but they have big thorns, so if you have young children, the Texas Style garden may not be for you for a few years yet.

Once you have your plants sorted out, you can begin looking for accessories. You can pick up ideas from the old cowboy films and from magazines, but a few recommendations are: a chow wagon style barbecue area with a canvas hood; some broken wagon wheels; a well, functioning or not (it could even be a fish pond that looks like a well); boulders and wooden fence posts.

Boulders are often overlooked by gardeners but there are some fascinating stones, boulders and rocks in all sorts of shapes and colours. Boulders with fossils in them are fantastic conversation starters. Smaller rocks can be used to create a rock garden and this will increase the choice of plant life that you can grow in your Texas Style garden. You will be able to plant succulents, small cacti and other small plants that often grow in this austere environment.

Lighting should be low and subtle so that you can see the stars at night. You could even have a camp fire with log seating or you can accomplish this look by using low powered solar lighting. Solar powered lighting will also save you from having to have an electrician wire up your garden.

When you have finished landscaping in the Texas Style, do not forget to get pleasure from it by eating outside as often as you can. Barbecues, steaks and Texmex food are the order of the day.

When many people, singles and families alike, think about booking a holiday, many of them would only think about going to the beach for a two week’s lounging on the beach under the sun and swimming in warm, azure sea.

However, many of the best, most famous beach locations are magnets for crowds of people. It appears that most people like the sand, the sea and the sun. Now some people go to these places precisely because they are full of activity. They like the crowds and the night clubs that attract them. Mainly singles go to these types of destinations and a holiday affair is not far from many peoples’ minds.

Couples and older people may desire a little less noise, pollution and commotion. However, there are beaches which meet these requirements too. Often they are private beaches. Some have hotels on them but some do not. Those that do not often have inland beach cottage rental properties instead. These are nearly always self-catering.

When most people think of a beach it is instinctively associated with the sea. However, this need not necessarily be so. There are also inland beaches on lakes and rivers. These beaches are usually referred to as inland beaches. Somewhere to stay can be a problem with even some of the best inland beaches.

Many of these inland beaches are simply not well-known enough to make a hotel commercially viable, but some of them have cottage rentals instead. These cottages, or cabins sometimes, can be difficult to find if you do not reserve early enough. They are usually complete homes, fully equipped with all the household facilities you have grown used to: a fully furnished living room, multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and a modern kitchen.

Inland beach cottage rentals are popular because they are usually located exactly on the water’s edge. This makes the bit of beach immediately before your cottage your private beach. You can sleep on it at night if it’s hot, lie there all day or set up a few fishing lines.

In the evenings, you can hitch up with neighbours to have a party or keep yourself to yourself. For this reason, it is a good idea to check photos of the cottage before you make a reservation.

If an inland beach cottage rental sounds just up your street, there are thousands to pick from in the United States and Canada. The Great Lakes are a particularly beautiful place to go. There are excellent locations in the Finger Lakes region of New York state and along Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

You will not regret going on holiday to an inland beach cottage rental property. There are so many variations that there is certainly something for every pocket and every family size. Singles are not so well catered for, but if you want a quiet holiday alone. maybe to study, then this might fitting be for you too.

You can fly into some of these resorts by seaplane, but it is more probable that you will take your own car or a rental car, if you want to get out and do some exploring further afield. Personally, I would rather rent a boat.

Moroccan furniture is normally solid timber and stylish. Morocco is an ex-French colony, but it is very near Spain as well. In fact, two small parts of Morocco, Melilla and Ceuta are still under Spanish jurisdiction.

This means that Moroccan furniture and decor has Berba, Arabic, French and Spanish influences. These Mediterranean influences are prominent in traditional and contemporary Moroccan furniture.

If combined with Moroccan decor and colours, Moroccan furniture can transform your home. Walls are usually emulsioned plain white or cream and lightly decorated with old carpets or tapestries with one or two photographs or paintings hanging among them.

Reds and browns are the predominant colours. Poignant writings from the Koran or other Arabic philosophers are often copied out in bold lettering and framed.

Moroccan accessories such as lamps, lanterns, mirrors, benches, vases, mosaic end tables, ottomans, rugs and ceramics can add that special local flavour to the decor, setting off the solid timber or padded fabric furniture.

Pillows and cushions feature large in Moroccan interior and garden decor, but they also use sofas and seats in the European manner. Morocco is well-known for its leather craft and leather is frequently used to cover chairs, sofas and footstools or poufes.

Loose rugs are important for sitting on and they are taken out and beaten each day to keep them clean as Morocco is a hot, sandy and dusty country if you travel a few miles inland from the coast. Camels are still used for transport in rural parts and camel hair is woven into rugs, blankets and wall coverings.

Moroccans like tiles and mosaics and Arabic style tiles are quite distinctive if you would like to use them in your bathroom and kitchen. If you would like to dine in Moroccan style, they usually eat at a very low round table with the primary dish in the centre from which everyone helps themselves, although in a family, some members will feed others as well.

Following convention and hygiene, you may only touch food with your right hand, although everybody will have washed both hands before coming to the table. Bread, rice and couscous feature highly in Moroccan food as does potatoes, carrots, lamb and chicken.Water is served during the meal and tea and coffee afterwards often with very sweet cakes covered with icing sugar and syrup.

People take it easy at home wearing long, loose-fitting garments and lounge on benches or on rugs on the floor surrounded by cushions. In the evening, lighting will be low offered by low wattage bulbs concealed behind red and brown stained glass or cloth. Candles, scented or not also feature a great deal in living rooms and bedrooms unless someone wants a stronger light to read by.

Candles in wall sconces are common methods to highlight extraordinary areas and illuminate corridors and some doorways. Often these sconces do not hold candles, but hold scented oil with a floating wick which is cheaper to leave burning between the hours or twilight and bed time.

June 28th, 2011Safe Gas Boiler Repairs

There is not actually much to go wrong with contemporary gas furnaces, but each mechanical item can fail and the central heating system is one of them. The problem is though, that hundreds of millions of households around the world have come to rely on their central heating system.

In general, people are not advised to meddle with items that they know nothing of, especially if it refers to something that could become a fire hazard, but this article is about safe gas furnace repairs, that you can undertake yourself.

Some of these tips might stand you in good stead if the gas furnace in your home central heating system gives up the ghost. These pointers could save you cold nights and high call-out fees.

The more that you become intimate with your central heating system, the more easily you will identify problems that arise, because in general, home heating units have intermittent issues and recurring problems.

Does your heating system keep switching itself on and off at inappropriate times? This probably has something to do with the thermostat. The old fashioned of dealing with thermostats was to tinker with them, but no one does that anymore, they just replace them. You might as well do the same.

Purchase a replacement thermostat and fit it, but if you would like to learn more, play about with the metal disk in the old one and refit it after a modification. If you carry on going like this, you might find out what works one day. Some thermostats are fairly simple devices and you can suss them out.

If your central heating system keeps shutting down, this is also almost certainly a difficulty with the thermostat, as long as there is fuel in the tank. The tactic is the same. Look at the disk inside the thermostat and read any writing on it. Usually, if you bias it one way or the other, it will fix the problem.

A really easy one is the pilot light. If your system is not working, simply check that the pilot light is burning. The pilot light serves as the ignition for a heat cycle, so if there is not one there, there will be no heat cycle or heating.

The pilot light can be blown out or only go out because of a temporary shortage of fuel, after which it will have to be re-ignited.

If your whole heating system seems to be working normally, but there is no heat coming through the vents, it is probably the blower. Check the fan belt and either tighten the tension or replace it. This is an easy job, which, having done once, you can do in your sleep.

The main thing about any home appliance is not to automatically reach for the phone book if items go wrong. That is precisely what the want you to do. They want you to think that items are too intricate unless you have studied them, whereas in fact, most engineers just replace parts – very little is fixed or taken apart any more.

It is very difficult to keep cats out of your garden, but do not give up, it can be managed. Cat owners may not understand why gardeners want to prevent cats gaining access to their gardens, but there are justifiable reasons, it is not always that gardeners hate cats. Cats are ferocious hunters and can also be very destructive.

For example, my next door neighbour had a cat, but felt lonely when her daughter moved away, so she permitted the cat to to have young. Now she has six cats. But cats are not like dogs. My dog stays in my garden not upsetting anyone apart from by barking if a stranger walks past the gate However, that is his job and he is not only telling me but the neighbours as well. These six cats do not stay in their own garden though, so we have all acquired six cats whether we want them or not.

The first problem I became aware of was that birds stopped coming to pick my dog’s bowl clean in the afternoon. Then I saw a cat eating a lizard, a beautiful nine inch specimen and then I remembered not seeing a lot of lizards lately. There is one lizard, the Tokay, that they have completely wiped out – I used to listen to them calling at night, but no more.

Cats also dig up plants when they defecate and use furniture as scratching boards, so I do not want these destructive animals in my garden. But how do you keep cats out of your garden?

Walls are rarely protection against cats, but cats will often prowl along the bottom of walls and if they come across a gap, they will possibly go in out of inquisitiveness, so repair all low-level gaps in your fences. There is not much you can do about the top of your wall other than putting broken glass or electrified wiring up there, but that is not a good idea.

Some dogs are good at keeping cats away, but not all. My dog got a nasty and completely unexpected swipe of claws across his nose one day. He used to chase them when they were kittens, but now they have grown up, he only growls to tell me a cat is on the premises. I cannot blame him.

In Australia, many gardeners reckon that transparent bottles full of water confuse cats, so they stay away, but in my experience, only Australian cats react in that way.

A row of prickly bushes or flowers along the base of a wall where cats frequently come in works. At the bottom of high walls too, where the cat cannot see them until he is on top of the wall. I often see cats mewing (in frustration, I hope) on the top of one of my walls. The only route down is to go back.

If you still cannot keep cats out, then you will have to train them not to come in. This is easiest achieved by using several methods. If cats are using your flower pots are toilets, try smearing the pots with pepper, lavender, lemon, mustard, or tobacco. Or you could leave a mothball in each pot. Some of these will work for you, others will not.

Then there are industrial repellents, but I do not want to resort to them. However, if you have a big garden and a big problem, it might be the only way. There are also high frequency sound emitters. Humans cannot hear them, but almost all animals can, so I think that that is deplorable too.

At night, motion-activated external lighting is a great upset to cats. Cats have very sensitive night vision so a quick flash from a floodlamp really puts them off a garden.

The best deterrent is water. You can buy motion-activated sprinklers, which are excellent at keeping cats out of your garden, but I like to sit in my office or in the garden with a powerful water pistol and squirt them by hand. The lizards have not come back yet, but neither do the cats quite so frequently either.

June 25th, 2011Relaxing In The Bath

Most individuals like soaking in the bath, even those individuals who say that you can not get clean in a bath. It is very relaxing, but there are some things that can increase your enjoyment of relaxing in the bath. Most of these accessories for relaxing in the bath are good for Jacuzzis. hot tubs, spas and normal baths.

The first thing that helps make a bath more relaxing is bubble bath. You ought to not use bubble bath in a hot tub – hot spa with a filter, because it can clog up the filter, but bath salts are a good alternative to bubble bath. A waterproof pillow also helps you unwind in the bath.

Aromatic bath salts or bubble bath can have a very soporific influence, so make certain that you do not fall asleep, particularly if you are indulging in my second favourite way of relaxing in the bath. I like to have a few glasses of red wine in the bath, but in that case you have to be very cautious not to fall asleep, especially if you have had a hard day.

If you are fond of a romantic bath alone or with a friend, candles are the way to go. Get the large, thick candles so that they will not burn down or fall over. Candles can be perilous if you do not place them on candle holders or loose tiles, which is why I advocate thick candles. Again they can be aromatic.

A lot of people like to listen to music in the bath, but be cautious of using anything that requires mains power whilst you are in the water. It is better to use a battery powered or rechargeable device for replaying your music.

If you have a spare CD player, you could construct it into an outdoor hot tub and run it off the mains for the pump, but just place it out of reach of the hot spa tub. Use a remote if you want to control it. Bathing in the garden is excellent, but we can not all do that.

You can recreate an outdoor atmosphere by putting potted plants in the bathroom. Some plants do not like a lot of light, but do like a humid atmosphere. Some orchids fall into this bracket, but there ought to be plenty of others too – merely enquire at your garden centre.

Mirrors are romantic in the bathroom and will help the room look larger and more full or candles and plants. The bathroom is frequently the smallest room in the house, so a couple mirrors will help make it look bigger.

If you are in a normal bath indoors in the bathroom, you could install a bubble mat. It is like a shower mat, but it pumps air and recycles water through holes in it, making it react a little like a hot tub spa. A bath bubble mat is no substitute for a spa, but it is better than nothing and is fairly cheap.

Every stage of cooking is vital: meal planning, meal preparation and presentation, yet before any of this can take place it is essential to pick the things that you are going to cook. The ability to pick high quality products is also very important. Food deteriorates after a particular length of time so knowing which signs to look for is the art to this specific aspect of cooking.

There are a number of considerations to product selection. For example, the cook has to estimate whether the produce is fresh, ripe or more than ripe. Is the amount of waste associated with this product acceptable? Will this product provide the required amount of nutrients? Do the intended consumers like it or will they like it? Does the cost validate choosing this option?

Balancing all these considerations is really some feat that maybe a billion people carry out every day and perhaps a number of times a day. It is just remarkable. However, the best cooks or household managers need experience to do it correctly most of the time yet you can only get experience by ‘doing’ and doing involves making mistakes from time to time. There is nothing wrong with that – making mistakes is a standard part of the learning process.

There are basically three elements to the successful selection of food. These are: 1] the substance of which it is composed; 2] its worth or potential to provide energy and or nutrients and vitamins and 3] how easily these qualities can be extracted in a digestible form.

It is only after you have answers to these three questions that you can know whether a product is worth the money. In other words, while you might always know the cost of an article of food, you may not always know its value.

It is obvious from the above that the cook who takes his or her job seriously has a mammoth task on hand to know what human bodies require at the various stages of growth, illness and even just recovery from normal wear and tear; to know what items of food can supply those needs; how to select foods that are at the peak of condition and how to prepare those foods so that you gain the most of that products potential.

Then there are the other considerations of whether you or your family will eat those goods at all or whether they will only eat them if prepared according to certain recipes and finally, whether you can afford those foods.

As far as preparing children to eat or at least try different foodstuffs is concerned, it is important to get started as soon as possible. Children do not know what is healthy for them so allowing them to eat hamburgers and chips every day, because it is ‘all they will eat’ is nonsense. Children have to be trained to eat what is put in front of them until they are competent to make their own choices.

June 23rd, 2011Cooking Basics (Part 1)

Without a doubt, the greatest difficulty confronting the human race is the growing of sufficient food for the populace of the world. After all, food, including water, is the one thing that we can not do without. Everyone has to eat enough, although lots of individuals do eat too much every day. However, it is not only a question of putting something or enough in our mouths, the food has to provide enough energy and enough nutrients.

Our bodies require the nutrients it takes to allow it to fight off attacks from disease, repair itself if it temporarily loses one of those battles and to just grow as we mature from childhood. We also need nutrients and energy to be able to move about, do our job and bring up our children. Therefore, in order to get the most out of life, we all need to eat enough food of the correct quality.

However, having enough of the right sort of food is only part of the difficulty. You also have to know how to get the most out of that food by serving it properly and mixing it with appropriate foods. This normally involves cooking.

Therefore, the capacity to cook is one of the most vital skills that a person can learn otherwise many of the nutrients will be lost and so precious food will be wasted as well. However, cooking does not only mean serving the ingredients in the right manner so as not to waste nutrients, it also means providing the complete assortment of nutrients and fibres that we require during the period of, say, a week.

Cooking has traditionally been seen as a woman’s occupation in most parts of the world but this is understandable because women were frequently at home with children for a large part of their early lives, however, that has changed in numerous societies. Since the introduction of the birth control pill, numerous women have taken on a different, more equal role in society. Not just that, but more and more individuals are selecting to live alone and indeed individuals are also living longer.

This all points to a need for everybody to learn how to cook. Each man an and woman ought to understand at least the essentials of cookery so that they can take care of themselves or / and take an dynamic part in taking care of their family. This is not an simple job, if you prefer to get it right. In many societies, children begin helping their parents and grandparents prepare food from an early age.

This is something that went out of fashion in many Western countries in the Seventies and Eighties. Luckily, this trend is reversing, however what is noticeable is that young Asian individuals living in the East are shunning learning to cook as ‘old fashioned’ as they are getting more prosperous. This is a real pity , yet we cannot expect Asian youth to learn from our mistakes.

The family cook has further responsibilities other than only those outlined above, the family cook also has to learn how to use the household budget judiciously. In lots of families, the food budget is the largest proportion of the absolute household budget. That is a big obligation. This just emphasizes the importance of cooking in the right manner, procuring the most nutrients possible from food and minimizing waste.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece writes on several topics, but is at present concerned with French dip sandwich recipes. If you want to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our site at Vegetarian Sandwich Recipes.

From the time that some individuals started thinking that a suntanned body makes them look trimmer, presumably on the same principle that black clothing makes you look trimmer than white clothing, there has been a dash for instantaneous tans and there is no more instant a tan than to have one painted on. This is known as airbrush tanning.

Airbrush tanning can appeal on various levels. It is quick, you can become any shade you like and there is no danger from UV rays natural or artificial. lots of people are frightened by the stories of melanoma that they can get by sunbathing or using a tanning bed, so an instant golden bronze colour appears quite an appealing alternative.

The fad for airbrush tanning has spurred the tanning industry to manufacture a vast range of airbrush-look-alike products. There are creams and lotions and even pills that the manufacturers claim will turn your skin an attractive golden bronze. Unfortunately, most of them turn your skin a rather ridiculous shade of orange.

Then there are the home airbrush tanning kits. Real airbrush tanning is comparable to having your car resprayed. You can either have it done by a specialist who has professional spraying equipment or you could go out and buy a dozen tins of your favourite colour car spray paint and do it yourself.

A car sprayed in the former manner normally looks great, but a car sprayed in the latter manner normally looks awful. Well, the same is true for professional salon airbrush tanning and home airbrush tanning. Even amongst professional spray painters some are better at it than others, so it is best to ask around before you let anyone airbrush you.

So, these are the greatest concerns with airbrush tanning. You cannot do it yourself; you cannot trust a friend to do it for you; it is doubtful whether you can even purchase the right apparatus to do it yourself and where do you find a specialist whom enough individuals have allowed to practice on them so that he or she is any good?

Because a decent airbrush tanner will need the correct apparatus and lots of experience. It is not a trade that can be studied from a book. Airbrush tanning is still a fairly new phenomenon, so a good tanner might be hard to find outside a big city, but you could try asking the owner of your neighbourhood tanning salon to invite one in once a fortnight for those who have booked in advance. A type of guest appearance.

As with any paint work, the secret to a good finish is preparation. If you have never been spray-painted before make certain that you prepare yourself properly. Ask your salon to supply you with a list of things that you can do in order to prepare your body in the correct manner.

Preparatory procedures may include shaving and exfoliating but will involve removing all make-up and body oils by washing well. This will give the paint a decent substrate to cling to. The better the preparation you do the better and longer-lasting the airbrush tan – ask any painter and decorator or car sprayer.

One of the fantastic things about sewing quilts is the tradition behind quilt making and the usefulness of the ultimate product. It is certainly nice to have a hobby that can improve your life by either being practical or by being saleable.

One of the other good things about quilt sewing is that it is so versatile. If there is more than one way to skin a cat, there are thousands of ways of making a quilt.

Patch work quilts are one of the most gorgeous and traditional quilts to use to keep you snug at night. They are also one of the cheapest ways of sewing a quilt, but they are not the easiest of quilts to begin with. Matching all the squares in a patch work quilt is not quite as easy as it looks. The easiest way to begin is to buy two large squares of fabric that you like.

However, there is an old tradition in Europe and America of sewing patch work quilts. The craft of doing this has even become a social gathering in the United States. If you want to get started making patch work quilts, you could join a group if you live in America or you could join an Internet group that specializes in making quilts. Do a search on line and you will discover what you are searching for.

There is such a lot of choice if you want to create a quilt. For example, you could make the top of the quilt either totally smooth or completely fluffy or completely smooth or a mixture of all or some of them. Then you can have the underside as a extraordinary cloth as well or you could simply use a sheet or preferably something a bit more robust.

If you are thoroughly intimidated by the idea of sewing a full-size quilt, you could try constructing a quilt for a baby. Okay, you might not have a baby and you might definitely not be planning having one, but you could create one for the practice and keep it to give to a special person in your life who is having a baby or only sell it through a local shop or even eBay.

Once you are confident about constructing and selling quilts for babies’ cots or toddlers’ beds, you could upgrade them a bit and offer to embroider your name and the baby’s name on the quilt. Later still, you could accept orders for custom quilts, manufactured to the requirements of the orderer.

Constructing quilts, especially babies’ quilts is a decent way of making money from home for people who cannot leave home a great deal. Those people such as work at home mothers and fathers, the elderly and the unwell.

Owen Jones, the author of that piece, writes on a variety of subjects, but is now concerned with the chenille throw blankets. If you want to know more, please visit our website at Woollen Blankets.

June 23rd, 2011How To Start Keeping Koi

Are you thinking about putting a koi carp pond in your garden? A koi fish pond is a great improvement to any garden. A garden pond is totally relaxing: watching the fish going about their every day lives is relaxing and listening to the sound of the water moving is relaxing too. Koi carp are a decent choice over some other fish because they grow fairly large and breed freely even in captivity.

They are not that problematic to keep either. As with all fish ponds, you need to maintain the quality of the water, but that is not so much of a problem when you know what you are doing. Once you have got the water correct, the rest will follow more or less on its own, although you will have to check it frequently.

Having said that, you ought to not only hurry out in to the garden, dig a hole and fill it with fish. You need to buff up on the subject first, but there is so much information on koi on the market, that you will have no problem in that regard. There is also plenty of knowledge on the Net.

The first thing to do is dig a hole for your pond, but it better not to have it uniformly deep. It ought to be three or four feet deep at one end and a foot or so deep at the other. The koi will lie dormant and sleep in the deeper water, but only the fry will feel relaxed in the shallow end. They will take refuge there to avoid being consumed by the larger fish. Like most fish, koi are cannibals.

When your pond has been excavated, fill it with water and leave it for a week. Use this week to test your water features such as the water pumps, the filter and the fountain. If you are losing water endeavor to plug the leak. If you have to keep topping up the water level from the hosepipe, you will probably run into hardship with chlorine.

After a week, the chlorine in that tap water will have dissipated and any surplus oil in your pond apparatus will have been flushed out, so you can put aquatic plants in. Plant them in pots so that you can move them easily if necessary. You ought to also construct some underwater caves for the fish to conceal themselves in.

When you are happy that everything is working well and that the environment is stable (this is easier to do in larger ponds), you can think of buying some koi.

You have to decide why you want to keep koi. Do you want to show them and possibly make some money? In that case you will have to begin with expensive fish, but if you just want to sit and watch them, the cheapest ones are OK. You can almost certainly get a friend to give you a few anyway.

If you procure your fish in the breeding season, you will almost certainly get a few gravid (pregnant) females anyway.

A word of warning: fish normalize their environment better than we do. A given amount of water will only hold a precise number of inches of fish. So, as an example, say that each ten gallons of water will be sufficient for ten inches of fish and you have 200 gallons that is 200 inches of fish, which is 20 x 10 inch fish or 40 x 5 inch fish. As the fish grow, they will die to maintain this ratio, so do not purchase too many until you are familiar with the ratio.

A lot of individuals in the West suffer from high blood pressure brought on by being obese or/ |and the high degrees of stress that contemporary life provokes. Most people are told to lose weight, take up yoga or walking or take tablets for life. This means that most individuals end up taking tablets for life, because lifestyle changes are so difficult to accomplish.

However, there is one enjoyable way of decreasing your blood pressure and that is eating tasty food that does not need additional salt, because it is flavoured by other spices. Here are three such recipes.

Recipe One: France

Leeks Vinaigrette (Poireaux En Salade)

Serves 4

12 leeks 1/4 cup olive oil 4 tspn vinegar of your preference black pepper, fresh ground 1 tbls fresh parsley, chopped mustard to taste

PREPARATION: Wash the leeks; cut off most of the green parts and wash thoroughly, split if necessary, under cold running water. If they are large, cut them lengthways; every bit ought to be around the size of a big stalk of asparagus.

Tie them into bundles in two places, place them in boiling salted water just enough to cover, and cook gently for 25 minutes, or until they are softish yet not lifeless. Drain them well (but be certain to save the broth to add to a soup).

The leeks can be presented in a serving dish or arranged on individual plates. Create your vinaigrette in a bowl, adding mustard to taste, and whisk the dressing well until it is almost opaque, or emulsified; pour it over the leeks.

Recipe Two: Germany

Birnensuppe (Pear Soup)

Serves 2

2 tbspn raisins 1 tbspn dry sherry 2 small pears, cored, pared and sliced 1 1/2 cup water 1 inch cinnamon stick 1 pinch crushed aniseed 2 tspns granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice

In small bowl combine raisins and sherry; set aside.

In 1-quart saucepan combine pears, water, cinnamon stick, and aniseed; bring to a boil and cook until pears are very soft, about 15 minutes. Remove cinnamon stick and let cool. Transfer to liquidizer and whisk until smooth; pour into bowl or container and stir in raisin mixture, sugar, and lemon juice. Cover and refrigerate until well chilled.

Recipe Three: Greece

Fried Swordfish With Mediterranean Spices

Serves 4

1/2 cups white wine vinegar 1/2 tspn paprika 1/2 tspn red pepper flakes, dried 1/2 tspn oregano 1/2 tspn cumin, ground 1/2 tspn thyme 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 bay leaf 1 1/2 lb swordfish, cut in 1″ pieces olive oil for frying 1/2 cup white flour

PREPARATION: Mix first 8 ingredients in a medium non-reactive bowl. Add swordfish pieces; toss to coat. Cover and leave stand at room temperature at least 1 hour. (Can be marinated for up to 3 hours.)

TO COOK: Heat oven to 200F. Heat oil in a frying pan or an electric deep fryer to 365F. Move swordfish from marinade to a strainer. Drain swordfish; discard marinade. Pat swordfish pieces dry with paper towels, then dredge in flour.

Working in batches to avoid overcrowding, fry swordfish until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Drain swordfish pieces on paper towel; transfer to a heatproof dish but keep them warm in the oven until about to serve. (Can be kept warm in the oven up to 1/2 hour.)

Unfortunately, not all foods are manufactured equal which makes the job of the dedicated cook more problematic, because it means that the cook has to understand the dietary requirements of humans at all stages of life, which foods can fulfill those needs yet, for normal families, within a finite budget.

Therefore, it is useful to know the constituents of food – that is, how much water, which vitamins, how much protein, fat and carbohydrate everything holds. If you know these proportions in each foodstuff, you can match them to your family’s needs, and also select the right method of serving the food, because some methods of preparation destroy some of these properties so should be avoided.

It is possible to cook very successfully for a family without knowing all these details, but knowing them either by having learned from an older relative or by study makes success more assured. Let us take a look at the five most common requirements of all human beings, if not indeed all mammals.

Water is the largest component of human bodies and has to make up the largest proportion of our intake as well. We are continuously using up our water content in evaporation, repair, replenishment and cleaning. Fortunately, there is also a lot of water in a lot of items that we eat, eg fruit, meat and fish, yet we still have to drink water to keep our fluid levels up. Dehydration kills.

Next in importance is mineral matter – that is vitamins and nutrients. It is not a problem to get this mineral matter, because plants suck it up from the ground and so, if you eat enough plant life, you ought to eat enough minerals. By plant life, I mean fruit, vegetables and fungi. Carnivores can consume a concentrated mix of plant life by eating meat, however lots of people have given up meat for one reason or another.

Different plant life has a different allotment and concentration of mineral. In general, cooking does not destroy mineral content, but over cooking can result in the mineral leaching out into the water they are boiled in.

Humans require protein to grow and repair themselves so a deficiency of protein is the foremost problem for vegetarians. It is not an insurmountable problem, but it is a worry. Carnivores acquire their protein from meat, fish and dairy. The process of cooking protein makes it more easily digestible for humans; dogs and cats do not have this need.

A great deal is talked about fat, yet fat is a vital component of the human diet. A fat-free diet is not healthy for us, yet the problem is that fat is simple to obtain, especially from junk food. Carnivores get most of their fat from meat, but fat is not a problem for vegetarians, because there is fat in almost each type of food, including nuts and grains.

Carbohydrates have also caused a lot of controversy (especially with the Atkins Diet), yet carbohydrates are also a basic part of our diet. Again, it is not a problem to get all the carbohydrates that we need. Carbohydrates are most predominant in starches and sugars yet there is no doubt that we should monitor our intake of carbohydrates in the same manner that we ought to with fats.

There are several factors why you can go deaf or hard of hearing. Some people are born that way, some go deaf at work because of excessive noise, others become deaf through illness or even medication and a great deal of individuals go hard of hearing in old age. You can simply put up with the situation, learn to lip-read or sign or you could purchase a hearing aid.

There are also several answers to the difficulty of hearing loss. There is surgery for some causes and there are different types of hearing aid for other situations. It is not common for hearing to be completely restored, but it can often be enhanced to a satisfactory degree.

Being hard of hearing can be very isolating. Deaf children are frequently mocked at school or are merely ostracized because they are too hard to talk to, a situation that frequently continues into adult life. Deaf people are usually more lonely than their hearing counterparts. Wearing a hearing aid can go a long way to reinstate someone to their natural position in society.

Children who are deaf also suffer at school because they cannot hear the teacher well and are frequently too embarrassed to say anything about it. This could mean poor exam results, poor qualifications and a lowly job for life. Again, wearing a hearing aid can go a long way towards correcting this situation.

Not only that, but hearing aids are a great deal more discreet nowadays than they were. They can manufacture the devices so powerful now that they can afford to cut the size, making both in-the-ear and behind-the-ear hearing aids almost invisible to the casual onlooker. There are also models that can be surgically installed right inside the ear which makes them invisible on casual inspection.

School mates can be cruel enough to someone who is hard of hearing, but family can become even more callous. Some members of the family may be angry at having to repeat themselves so often or at having to shout.

Some just stop talking to their deaf relative. Another source of annoyance can be a loud TV or radio. Those who are not hard of hearing will find it uncomfortable if the volume is too high for them.

Subtitling has gone a long way to fixing this situation but the subtitles are never as beneficial as hearing the speech and the intonation of the actors. Once again a hearing aid can solve this situation.

The top programmable digital hearing aids cost thousands of dollars and are out of the reach of many people. Some would not even pay the money even if they could because they feel that they just require a little assistance with their hearing at certain times, say whilst shopping, socializing or listening to TV. If this is the case then you can get hearing aids or listening devices right down to $10 each.

Look on eBay and Amazon and you will be amazed at what is available. Just do some research before parting with your money and get a guarantee.

In the developed world, not many individuals eat insects for pleasure, but that is fairly unusual if you take into account the number of people and the number of nations in the world that do. In Asia, numerous people eat insects on a weekly or even daily basis. However, you may one day be happy that you read about eating insects, if you are stranded somewhere a long way from any other supply of food.

For example, lots of army personnel are taught how to consume worms and insects as part of their routine training course as part of their survival training. Insects are abundant and are easy to catch or trap, they are also a richer source of protein than steak and easier to cook and far less risky to eat raw than meat from mammals, fish or birds.

Insects can provide more than three times the amount of protein weight for weight than any meat or fish. They are also free, you just have to know where to look or how to bait them. However, you ought to not consume just any insect that you can get your hands on. There a few easy basic guidelines.

Do not consume anything that can bite or sting you back. Not because this is perilous to you, but because creatures like bees, wasps and some ants only do not taste pleasant because of the poisons they make for their stings. A distinguished exception to this rule is the scorpion. Many individuals find roast scorpion a delicacy.

You could improve this rule to only include brightly coloured, stinging insects – especially ones with yellow colouring. Furry insects are not nice either, particularly caterpillars. Flying insects in general, like flies, mosquitoes, blue bottles and the like, ought to be avoided as well.

Big beetles (with the exception of cockroaches), grass hoppers, locusts, crickets and scorpions are the best. So are worms, maggots and most other larvae of that type like bee, wasp and hornet larvae. Termites and non-stinging ants are also edible.

Most individuals fry the insects in oil after taking off the wings (like with flying termites or ants). However, if you are stuck in the wild, you might not have any oil with you. Luckily, that is not too big a problem if you cook the insects fairly slowly, because most of them have enough of their own body fat to be fried in.

If you find that eating your first meal of insects is simply too much to bear, try mashing them in with some boiled root vegetables or wrap them in leaves. Boiled nettle leaves are very healthy and young dandelion leaves can be consumed raw.

If you are not sure how far to cook your insects, worms and larvae, here are a few pointers from Asia. Fry big beetles, termites and scorpions until they are hard on the outside but with a small, slightly soft centre. Fry worms, crickets, grass hoppers and the like until they are hard and crisp and boil grubs and bee, wasp and hornet larvae for only a few seconds.

The majority of Westerners that visit Thailand turn their noses up at eating insects, but after six years of living here, I have never heard any of those who tried them say that they were unpleasant. In fact, most said that they were surprisingly tasty, but then why else would so many people be fond of them?

Owen Jones writes articles on several topics, but is at present concerned with fighting beetles If you are interested too, come over to our web site at Electronic Insect Killer.

June 20th, 2011What Are Bed Bugs?

Most individuals under seventy years of age in the West will not have seen bed bugs. This is mainly due to enhanced living conditions, DDT and better public education. The DDT was used in the thirties and forties and eradicated the problem in the more wealthy countries.

Bed bugs are a member of the arachnid or spider family, although bed bugs are parasites that suck blood, not all bodily fluids. They will feed on most warm-blooded animals and there is some proof that humans are not their first preference of prey.

The most common form of bed bugs are known as Cimex lectularius by their Latin name. They are quite small but very fast moving insects and they are members of the spider family, although many of them do not look like spiders at all. Rather, most of them look like little beetles, until they have satiated themselves, after which they can hardly move and are at their most vulnerable.

Bed bugs feed in a similar way to mosquitoes. They insert a tube into the skin of its victim and suck blood out. It is not a great deal to you, about a quarter of a millilitre, but is a lot to them. It allows them to live and procreate.

Bed bugs, unlike their relatives the ticks, are not known to convey any diseases. In fact, they are one of the few insects that do not pass on a disease.

A bedbug bite is comparable to an ant bite in appearance, but it will itch similar a mosquito bite. You will most likely experience a slight swelling with a red dot in the centre and an itch. Not much more.

You can check for bed bugs quite easily by soaking a bar of soap in a little water for half an hour while you lie on your bed reading a book. Then get up and fetch the soap, wet-side down and throw back the bed clothes. Pat up the bed bugs, if there are any with the soft soap. This is a speedy method of getting rid of a small number of bed bugs, but cannot be seen as a solution.

With regards to the annihilation of an infestation of bed bugs, it depends where you are. If you are in a hotel, the bar of soap will be proof enough of a problem and it is the hotel manager’s duty to provide a solution. If they do nothing, report the hotel to the local tourist bureau.

If you live in rented accommodation, it is your landlord’s responsibility to resolve the problem. If he or she is disinclined, then go to the city hall and seek advice.

If the issue is in your own house, then take the skirting boards and architraves off. Spray or paint very powerful insecticide onto the wall and refit the woodwork. If you are still worried, seal the woodwork off on all sides with mastic or silicone.

These measures will ensure that your house will be free of bed bugs.

June 19th, 2011Travelling By Train

During the last ten years there has been a return to train travel, especially in the United States. This might have something to do with nostalgia and romance, but most analysts put it down to a result of the in-flight bombing of Twin Towers on 9/11/2001.

The government’s and the airlines’ response to those acts of terrorism have resulted in enormous hikes in the degree of security at airports and quite rightly so, but travellers are also put off by the long queues and intrusive searches at airports. This problem is even worse at busy airports and during holiday periods such as when schools are closed.

Car travel is also an alternative, but then you have to do your own driving and that brings its own issues, especially if you are with children and especially if you are a single parent. Apart from that, travelling by train is a holiday in its own right. Your holiday starts the minute you put your bags in the rack and find your seat.

Once you have sat down, given the kids a colouring book and a can of soda, you can sit back, relax and just snooze or look out of the window at the scenery whizzing past. Most of your worries are over until you arrive at where you are going. Your kids cannot become lost or wander off and they are very safe from predators.

Furthermore, trains seats are usually much more roomy than the equivalent airline seats. Economy seats in a train are much more comfortable than economy seats in an airplane. You can also get up and walk about which makes long journeys much more comfortable.

The backdrop is also better from a train than a plane. After all, clouds are clouds are clouds, but you can see all sorts of things out of the window of a train. There are also sleeping and dining carriages to break up the journey, but there is normally also attendant service in your seat, if that is what you want. Simply push the button and someone will come to take your order.

Have you heard of the Orient Express, the Flying Scotsman or the Trans-Siberian Express? What romantic visions they conjure up. Modern trains may not have the nostalgia or the steam locomotives of the Thirties, but they are still fantastic to travel on.

You can book your seats on a train journey much the same as you would on a plane, which means that if you stand up to go to the bathroom or dining carriage, your seat will still be unoccupied when you get back. This is a huge plus point, because it is annoying when someone takes your seat.

The next time that you make a decision to go away, think again about travelling by train. You can leave your car at the station or you can even take it with you on the train, if you like. You will not regret having given the rail network a chance, because the likelihood are that you have forgotten how handy and inexpensive they are.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a lot of topics, but is presently involved with American Flyer train sets. If you would like to know more about train sets for kids, please go over to our website for some great offers.

The generations alive now, especially in the Developed world, are all au fait with speaker technology to a certain level. Most individuals began purchasing music centres in the Seventies if they were old enough and that trend has carried on and the technology has got better and better.

Acoustic reproduction has come on in leaps and bounds since the Fifties and Sixties when most people were content with a mono Dansette record player. My father was still listening to his favourite 78′s on a wind-up record player with a pin for a needle and a trumpet for a loudspeaker in the early Sixties. Then he bought a Dansette later in the Sixties.

I purchased a Sanyo music centre in the Seventies and he followed suit. The quality of acoustic reproduction on those systems was laughable in comparison with what is on the market these days.

The latest development is surround sound, which was only accessible in the cinema twenty years ago, but surround sound speakers are a lot better now than they were then and you can fit them at home without requiring a supplemental mortgage advance.

Often surround sound speakers are associated with film scores, so a surround sound speaker system could be fitted to the outline jacks on your TV or home theatre system.

Home theatres are very much in vogue now that lots of people are having to stay in more frequently to save money. A small family that likes to go to the pictures once a week can recoup the costs of a good home theatre system within a year.

When looking at surround sound speakers, you may think that the cost is high, but do not forget that it is the surround sound speakers that transform a film into a cinematographic experience. They also last forever if not abused.

Two tips: get the best that you can afford and buy speakers that will stand on the floor or can be hung on the wall.

Purchase quality rather than quantity. If you can just afford two speakers of great quality, so be it, You can buy another one later. With surround sound, the rule is: the more speakers the better.

Three is the absolute minimum, seven is fine, but eight is much better. The more speakers that you have, the less volume you will have to pump through them so the longer they will last.

The above configurations will be written as: 2:1 (stereo plus a sub-woofer); 6:1 (front and back stereo speakers, a front central channel and a rear sub-woofer); 7:1 will add a rear central channel.

The good thing about this type of surround speaker system is that you can easily upgrade it, but you have to start properly by buying a recognized marque that will allow you to add speakers throughout the years.

One of the best speaker systems you can buy is Bose, but they are costly, but they are also the envy of any sound enthusiast as well. If you would like the best, but do not have the capital take your time creating a system of Bose surround sound speakers.

Novice horse-owners and occasional riders may not know the exact nutritional needs of horses. However, this is not strange because there are several variables in calculating what a horse requires in the way of food. The factors to take into account while working out the needs of horses are: age, weight and level of activity.

You cannot put rubbish in and expect your horse to perform marvellously. You cannot only turn your horse out into a field and expect it to find all that it needs. There are common cases of wild horses dying of starvation, especially if the weather is bad.

Having said that, foraging, which mainly involves eating grass, is a major source of food and it gives the horse an interest, a diverse diet and plenty of roughage as well. Roughage will also help your horse’s digestive system continue working properly. Just like eating just junk food is not healthy for the human digestive system.

A mature, working horse requires about 2-2.5% of its body weight in good quality grass or hay a day. Therefore, a horse of 1,000 pounds will require 20-25 pounds of decent, fresh grass or hay a day. If the horse is not worked, it can almost certainly get by on about 1% of its body weight in feed.

In the summer, this is probably not much of a difficulty, but if it is in the winter or if the land cannot sustain the number of horses you keep on it. If this is the case or if you would like to breed or work the horse, you will probably need to supplement the forage food with grain or oats. In this case forage food ought to make up around half of a horse’s feed for top quality nutrition.

However, it is not just as easy as that either because not all grass and not all hay is of the same quality. The quantity that you feed depends on the quality needed not the quantity, so the feed that you give has to be tested too.

Your pasture is the best and the cheapest method of feeding your horse(s). Here is a rough and ready guide to feeding an average horse of 1,000-1,200 pounds in a decent quality summer pasture. A mare and foal requires 1.75-2 acres; a yearling needs 1.5-2 acres and a weanling needs 0.5-1 acre.

You can crop feed for the winter by cutting grass from another field or by buying it. The hay ought to be pure and not dusty. It should also be free of damp and mould. It might not show any signs of rot or mildew.

There are other foodstuffs that you can supplement with, but you have to do more research. Alfalfa hay can be used but it is not the same as grass hay and you have to do other calculations. Oats and grain can also be given, but again more calculations are needed. There are services that you can use to get your horse’s feed analyzed.

June 19th, 2011Controlling Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are almost certainly the most ghastly of household pests in many peoples’ eyes. Cockroaches are bad enough, but they do not suck on you. Mosquitoes suck blood and are maddening, but we accept them more than bed bugs. But bed bugs suck your blood while you are asleep and then mess in your bed as a thank you note.

Luckily, these insects do not carry any human diseases that we are conscious of, so they are quite ‘safe’ in that regard, whereas there are quite a couple of deadly diseases that you can acquire from mosquitoes such as malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever amongst others. Still, the majority of of us prefer mosquitoes to bed bugs.

If your home is infested with these bugs, you will surely want to get rid of them, so you will have to know something concerning the lifestyle of these creatures. Bed bugs like to conceal themselves during the day time in cracks, crevices, torn wallpaper and linoleum, broken plaster, a ripped mattress and stacked clothing, books, magazines etc..

The popular belief common until a few decades ago was that bed bugs only liked dirty households, but this is not true. Cockroaches like to scavenge for dropped food as do ants, but bed bugs only consume blood and do not even have mouth-parts to consume fallen food if they were famished.

Therefore, bed bugs do not have to live in a slovenly house, just in one that is run-down, poorly taken care of or cluttered. If you want to clear up an infestation of bed bugs, the first thing to do is launder all your clothing in hot water or dry-cleaning fluid and then store them in sealed plastic bags.

The next stage is to repair anywhere they could be hiding. Stick back or replace any ripped wallpaper and seal off any loose woodwork such as skirting boards and architraves with a bead of mastic or filler. Close up the woodwork top and bottom, so that any bed bugs hiding in there will not be able to get out again. This saves trying to kill them.

Put away all books, piles of newspapers, toys and general clutter and check your furniture for wobbly joints. For example, if a seat or table is a bit ricketty, tighten the screws or mastic the joints together. Fill nail and screw holes with filler or mastic.

Roll up your carpets and inspect the floor boards. Cork the joints, fill screw holes and check the bead of mastic at the base of the skirting boards.

Inspect the framework of your bed and renovate as mentioned above. Are there red or brown smears on your mattress? if so, they could be hiding in your mattress. Sew up any tears and seal the mattress in a mattress case which can be zipped closed in order to seal any bugs inside. Otherwise, maybe it is time to replace it.

Standard pesticides do not have much effect on bed bugs, so be careful what you purchase. You need something that has an abrasive element in it. Some use finely ground up glass, which might pose a health hazard to you or your pets.

Diatomaceous Earth is far less risky. Sprinkle or spray it under your carpets and around the base of the skirtings, where bed bugs like to scuttle. Relay your carpets and steam clean them.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on several subjects, but is now involved with pictures of bed bugs. If you want to know more, just go to our website at Picture of Bed Bugs.

Purchasing garden furniture on line is not the perfect solution as it both solves and presents some difficulties if it is used indiscriminately. For example, if you find it difficult to get around the shops and garden centres, the Internet will permit you to visit hundreds of places to compare styles and prices, but you will not have had sight of your furniture and it might be costly to return it.

Therefore there are a couple of things to watch out for if you want to buy garden furniture on line. Some of these suggestions will apply to other goods as well particularly weighty goods.

Be wary of shipping charges because some companies will strive to hide the fact that they can be horrendous. If delivery charges are an extra, do not forget to add these fees on to the cost of the garden furniture before you evaluate prices. Some businesses will talk some claptrap about an order processing fee in an effort to mask their delivery fees. These companies are being dishonest and you should avoid them like the plague.

Try to turn off to the words ‘discount’ and ‘sale price’ until you have added up all the costs and you have compared this total with the total cost of a comparable device. Likewise, be very wary of comparisons between list price and sale price. Manufacturers frequently ‘recommend’ a high list price purposely so that the retailer can offer a discount. It is very common practice, but designed to deceive.

Beware of ‘price snobbery’. If you see two retailers selling exactly the same items of garden furniture but at widely different prices, do not be automatically convinced that the cheaper one must be inferior. Instead, look around the cheap web site for extra costs. Do not forget that most retailers buy from the same manufacturers.

Do not trust any firm that says that they will not be beaten on price because they are the cheapest on the Internet or that they will undercut anyone you can prove is cheaper. They have no proof that they are the cheapest and if you prove that they are not they will decrease their price only to you because you caught them in their lie. These people are liars.

Firms that make a big issue out of quick service are not really giving you anything. Every company likes a fast turn-around because they can bank the check earlier and the warranty finishes sooner too. You will find out how decent their service is if you have difficulties. Empty promises and blowing one;s own trumpet mean nothing. Self praise is no praise.

You can check up on the firm’s customer service record by typing the company’s name, city of business and the word ‘issues’ or ‘problems’ into Google. You will soon be able to determine for yourself whether you are dealing with a reputable firm or not. Purchasing garden furniture on line is the same as buying anything else expensive on line: it is up to the buyer to beware before parting with his money because it may be hard to get it back if there is a problem.

Most individuals have learned a fire safety drill at some time during their lives. Kids learn it in school and adults learn it at work, yet how many individuals put it into practice it at home? If it is worth practicing a fire safety code at work, it must be worth implementing one at home as well.

You could adapt and adopt the fire safety code from school for your home use, and just like in work, you will have to make sure that everyone in your household knows and knows your fire safety code. Adopting a home fire safety code will greatly increase your family’s chances of surviving a home fire.

The specialists at the fire station are known as Fire Prevention Officers. Fire prevention officers frequently give talks on fire prevention techniques at schools, offices and seminars. It is also often possible to have a one-on-one interview with a fire prevention officer but they will also visit you in your home for more specific advice in some regions.

The chief fire prevention officer has to train new recruits and schedule public buildings for check ups depending on their location, age and usage. You could use the same criteria to assess the risks in your own home.

For example, older houses tend to have more timber in them and smaller windows which means that it might catch fire more easily, it might burn faster and it may be more difficult to escape from because of the smaller windows, which might even be jammed.

Only to give you an idea of what a building’s fire code can be like, I will give some instances below. You can apply some of these concepts to the ‘fire code’ for your home, according to what sort of building you occupy.

Firstly, buildings in numerous countries have maximum occupancy levels for each residential building, especially for commercially rented buildings. You may not simply keep partitioning accommodation in order to cram in more tenants (and get more rent). This maximum is a strict law and must be adhered to.

If you live in or rent out a commercial residency, then all exits should be clearly marked with lit signs which can be seen through smoke. They also have to have a battery back-up in case the cables get burned through. These buildings also have to have a particular number of fire extinguishers but there might even have to be a number of different types, eg: water hoses, sand buckets, fire blankets and regular extinguishers.

There also have to be smoke detectors and a building-wide fire alarm system. Make certain that flammable supplies are kept in a safe place and that fire drills are carried out on a regular basis. Everyone should know their muster spot and which doors ought to be closed and which ones left open.

Lots of the suggestions above are true laws for commercial and some residential premises, so if you do not like to fall foul of the law, make certain you know your obligations.

The way in which to handle situations which could reasonably be expected to result in panic is to have a plan of action firmly fixed in your mind already, so that in the event, you only have to follow routine. This is how people are taught in the military and in rescue organizations. They have procedures and routines and they practice them until they become second nature.

This is not so easy in a domestic situation especially with treat to a house fire – you cannot realistically pretend that you have a house fire and you cannot merely set fire to bits of it either, so the next best thing is to have a checklist to prevent fires occurring but to go through the checklist on a ordinary basis – say, weekly.

Lots of house fires start in the kitchen, so you could begin there:

1] Is the oven clean? The rings yet the oven have to get clean or the debris can catch fire.

2] Are the curtains so long that it is possible that they can get blown onto a hot ring if the window is open? This is a frequent cause of kitchen fires, especially if you hang new curtains in the winter or spring but do not realize that the wind can blow them into the rings until the summer when you open the windows

3] Are the flexes on your electrical devices all in order? Check for fraying or wear and tear. Are any of the electrical sockets overloaded? It is not a sensible thing to use adapters in the kitchen – stick to the principle of one plug in one socket and a really decent habit is to unplug anything you are not using, even the kettle or the coffee machine

The home’s heating system is a fire risk, after all it is meant to be hot, so check it:

1] All heaters ought to get switched off while there is no one to keep an eye on them, with the exception of central heating. Turn bar fires off if you go out or go to bed and always fix a guard in front of open fires if you leave the room. ‘Fix’ a guard with clips, do not only stand one in front of the fire because a falling log or lump of coal can knock a guard over.

2] Can curtains or other textiles blow into the fire or get heated to the point of combustion? Occasionally, people pull their chair or couch up to the fire but fall asleep or go to bed leaving the chair to heat up.

3] Is the chimney clean? Soot can but does catch fire so have your chimney cleared or inspected regularly.

4] Likewise with the furnace, is it clean and soot-free?

5] If you use gas, are the bottles stored outside the house?

5) Has the furnace been cleaned and inspected this year?

6) Are the propane tanks yet fuels stored outside the house?

Then there are general points:

1] Do you have a house fire safety evacuation drill? Do you have a muster purpose, so that everybody knows that everybody is out of the house and safe?

2] Are electric leads, cables yet extension leads in good condition? Do you have any under carpets? If so, you ought to not actually, so check them for wear.

3] Are any sockets overloaded? Are all devices that are not in use unplugged?

4] Do you have smoke detectors? Do you check that they are working? Do you have a spare battery in case one fails?

Gaining weight and doing less exercise is a characteristic pattern of life for middle-aged individuals of both sexes. When we are young, our metabolisms can deal with most things we throw at it but we start our jobs on the bottom rung and perhaps even have a young family to take care of. This all burns up our calories quite naturally.

However, as we become older our metabolism slows down; we may get a manager’s job and our kids leave home. This all has the result of calories being stockpiled on our waists and thighs. However, there are a few things that can be done about it, but it in essence boils down to taking more exercise and watching what we eat.

This normally has the effect of giving us hypertension, which is what most individuals call high blood pressure. The purpose of this piece is to offer some pointers for dealing with high blood pressure. The fact is that if you do nothing about the condition, you will be taking tablets for the rest of your life.

That is OK, if you do not mind taking medication, but most people would rather avoid taking medicine every day.

So the first thing to do is moderate your weight to what it should be. If you do not know what this is, you will have to enquire of a dietitian or your GP. The handy thing about the majority of of the things you ought to do is that they are all connected with decent health.

For example, if you are overweight, you require more exercise and more exercise will also help lower your blood pressure. Two birds with one stone!

It does not take a great deal to make a big difference, if you do nothing at all now. Strolling for thirty minutes twice a day will make a colossal difference to your body if you do not walk anywhere now. Strolling will have a knock-on effect. It will make you lose weight, it will lower your blood pressure and it will massage your internal organs naturally. Swimming works in a similar way.

Reducing your consumption of salt is a good manner of losing weight, yet you do need professional advice on this subject because salt is a key part of the human diet. However, if you eat too much salt (normally by eating too much processed food), you can change the situation by using herbs and spices instead of salt to augment the flavour of your food.

Other facets of life that escalate blood pressure which do you no use at all anyway are smoking, drinking to excess regularly and allowing yourself to get stressed out. Curing these three habits will have the effect of decreasing your blood pressure.

Taking any of these pointers for dealing with high blood pressure on board will enhance your life and reduce your blood pressure, but you may have to perform all of them to get it down if you have a serious problem.

Camping is a very well-liked activity among the under Forties. People like to go hunting, fishing, hiking, walking or just camping with their friends, family or lover. The outdoors is attractive and can be romantic. Lots of people would like to get a little closer to nature and the easiest way of doing this is sleeping under canvas, or nylon or something man-made like that. Another advantage for the young is that it is inexpensive.

However, it is not just inexpensive, it is healthy and educational. All children should go camping either with their parents or the scouts in order to learn something of nature before they get locked into a job to pay the mortgage and forget that there is life outside the city. You know, there are inner city children that do not know that milk comes from cows? How ridiculous is that?

So, if you are going to take an education in nature by the horns, you will have to have some camping equipment. Inexpensive though camping equipment is relative to the equipment required for other activities, most people still have to be a bit careful how much they spend.

If you fall into that category, then this article is for you. Before we get into the nitty-gritty, it is worth pointing out that if you have the money, you can do worse than simply going down to the local sports shop or camping shop and buying all your equipment from them. Buy everything you require in one go and ask for a discount. if anything ever goes wrong they will remember you as a big spender and fix it for you right away.

However, the remainder of have to be a bit more careful with the cheque book. If you know a bit concerning camping equipment from your parents or from the scouts and do not mind second-hand, then car boot sales and garage sales can be just the ticket.

Frequently people are selling things because their kids have left home and they are having a clear out or perhaps they have had more children and the pup tent is no longer any use to them.

I sold a lovely tent not so long ago for peanuts because I knew that I would never need it again. The beauty of these sales is that you can put the tent up or get the seller to put it up for a closer inspection. Look for rot, sniff for mildew, check the number of pegs and guide lines et cetera, but do not get carried away with perfection, you can buy extra pegs, lanyard and a mallet, but you do not want to have to sew up holes or replace zips or fly screen.

Classified ads are another good source of equipment, but pick the device up yourself so that you know where to take it back if you do not have the opportunity to inspect it properly before handing over the money.

EBay and Amazon are also pretty decent, but you have to do some research on the manufacturers’ names and the normal retail prices otherwise you may end up buying an expensive copy, a kiddies’ toy tent or merely junk.

One of my favourite stores to browse is the Army and Navy Surplus store. Try going into an A&N and coming out empty-handed. If the equipment in there is good enough for our troops to risk their lives with, it’s decent enough for a week in the Poconos.

The percentage of the population in the countries of the West that is suffering from hypertension (aka high blood pressure) is going up all the time. High blood pressure is also called the ‘silent killer’, because there is no real warning that you have it, but it can kill you stone dead all the same.

When people say that they can feel their blood pressure rising, it is normally just an idiom meaning that they are becoming angry or excited. You cannot know that your blood pressure is high without measuring it.

So, how can you decrease your blood pressure or prevent it from going up without resorting to the daily intake of medication? Here are the top 10 causes of high blood pressure.

1] The first thing to do is lose weight if you are too fat. Just losing ten pounds can have quite a significant impact on your BP.

2] Smoking is a cause of high blood pressure, so you could chop that out.

3] Drinking alcohol to excess often also raises BP

4] A desk bound lifestyle or plain lack of exercise will not help either. If you cannot bring yourself to go to the gym, only walk more. A walk of thirty minutes in the morning and in the evening will instigate a lot of difference.

5] Diet. It is important to eat a healthy diet, which will also help you lose weight. Cut out most processed foods; cut down on meats and fatty foods and consume more fruits and vegetables. Sodium plays a big part in weight gain (through water retention) and is a major factor in hypertension. Reduce your salt intake. (Junk foods have a high sodium content).

6] Endeavor to be cheerful. Easier said than done in most cases, but strive to develop a positive attitude. Stress plays a big part in creating hypertension. Exercise is said to relieve stress as is meditation and yoga. Attempt a couple of things and see what works for you.

7] Some illness and sleep disorders raise blood pressure as do some medications. Sleep disorders like sleep apnoea disrupt your sleep, preventing you from getting proper sleep, which increases BP as well. Sleep apnoea can be the result of being overweight, so you know how to deal with that, and if you think that medication is causing high BP, speak to your GP.

8] Age can be a cause but although there is nothing you can do about your age, you can attempt to be a ‘young’ whatever you are. individuals more than the age of 55 by and large start getting hypertension rather than younger individuals. You could try to stay fit and optimistic. See exercise above.

9] Race is another aspect about which you have no control, and Africans and their descendants are more liable to hypertension. If you fit this profile, become aware that you are in danger and check your BP regularly.

10] Fear, anxiety and depression can all have harmful influences on BP, so if any of these incapacitating conditions applies to you, seek help.

Even older horses have to be kept fairly active, especially if they have always led an energetic life. Old horses that have been lively are a bit like humans that are forced to retire at 65 – they often become depressed.

The same as with us, the body might start to show signs of wear and tear, but the mind still works well and the old horse will miss its old colleagues – human and animal – and will miss being active.

For these reasons, you should never just abandon an old horse in a field thinking that you are doing it a favour by not making it work. Slacken off the work, if you like. Ride it a little less frequently, if you think it is a good idea, but never only leave it alone ‘to enjoy its retirement’. It will not comprehend what you are doing.

It is quite possible that the older horse will suffer from arthritis. Standing in a field all day is not a remedy for arthritis, but mild exercise can help relieve the indications of arthritis. There is no need to push your horse too much, but you can walk him and even ride him a bit, if he can take your weight. Otherwise ask a child to ride him for you.

Average mild exercise will strengthen his muscles and build up his cartilages which will alleviate the effects of arthritis. This will be healthy for the horse, but it will also be good for you as it will mean that you will require less help from the vet. It will also make him a more contented horse which will improve his digestion and general well-being.

If your horse has been abandonned to get on with his life alone for a time, heed the recommendation that humans are given in the same circumstances. That is, have him checked over by the vet and ask for approval for your exercise programme from him. Then, have his shoes and hoofs checked so that he receives less shock from walking on tarmac. Massage some oil into his joints as well, if the vet says it will help.

The new exercise routine should start mildly, but may be increased gradually as your horse gets fitter. If you notice that your horse is still in pain, try massage. When massaging your horse’s joints, pick up a leg and lightly bend and straighten it about ten times per joint.

Endeavor to do this three or four times a day until you see results and then walking will almost certainly obviate the need for further massage, unless you enjoy doing it too. This will ease his joints which have probably become stiff through lack of use.

You can try neck stretches too. This is best done by offering treats, say, across a fence. Encourage your horse reach for the treat – first up high and then down low. Give carrots rather than sweets because of your horse’s aged teeth.

Remember that older ‘people’ have different dietary requirements to younger people and the same goes for horses.

Cats do not generally need bathing because their mothers teach them how to wash themselves while they are kittens. Moreover, cats have a justifiable reputation for not liking water too much. However, there might be occasions when you feel the necessity for bathing your cat.

For example, your cat might be old or sick, have been in a bad scrap or get infested with fleas. When these times occur, you will be grateful for some tips for bathing your cat, because they can get quite nasty about it, inflicting deep scratches that could become infected.

This first thing to do is gather everything you need in advance, because you will probably need to hold your cat down. So, you will want the shampoo, a flannel and a towel close at hand.

If you already know that your cat is going to become difficult, bathe it in a bowl either in the garden shed or in the bathroom, where flying water will not cause much of a difficulty.

Otherwise, you could bathe your cat in a bowl on the lawn, but an enclosed space may make your cat feel less at risk and it will be easier to catch it in an enclosed space if it escapes your grasp.

If your cat really detests bathing and you have trouble holding it, put it in a pillow case with only its head sticking out. You can use a cat collar to hold the pillow case in place.

If you use a pillow case, bathe your cat through the pillow case as you would a delicate, expensive woollen jumper. Use an old collar, because otherwise you might wash out the pesticide that is impregnated in it.

If your cat’s fur is matted or clotted with blood, you had better remove the clots and cut away the hair with the cat on your lap before you begin bathing it.

Whilst preparing the bowl, put a non-slip mat or towel in the bottom and merely half fill it with luke warm water. The shampoo ought to be mild. In fact, you ought to bathe your cat as you would a child who does not like getting soap in its eyes.

Lower your cat gently but fairly quickly into the water and talk to it reassuringly all the time. It will probably hate what you are doing to it, although some breeds are fairly happy to be in water. Yours probably will hot be though and it will become more than a little frightened, so carry on talking to it.

Wash quickly and do what you can. It is better to get most of the bathing done the first time round and have to come for a second go later than to really stress your cat out with a long session and who knows, it might get used to it after repeated sessions, if they do not last very long.

After you are done, wrap the cat in a towel and be nice to it. If it is in a pillow case, wrap the towel about the pillow case and take it off under the towel. Once your cat is fairly dry, you can let it go if it wants, because it will dry itself off anyway.

If you have just moved home or have recently finished redecorating, you might be thinking that it is time to buy some new furniture as well. However, new furniture can make a big difference to the atmosphere of your home and it is not cheap, so it is best to do a bit of homework on how to choose furniture before you dive in and obligate yourself to spending a small fortune.

Some people like to live in the newly decorated apartment or house for a while to get a feel for what will suit the ambiance first. However, sooner or later, you will just have to bite the bullet and start trudging around the malls and the Internet. Catalogues and brochures are a decent starting place and a source of free ideas. Next come the monthly ‘Home’ magazines. Show rooms in the big stores and on the Internet can generate ideas too.

Are you drawn to timber? Many people are and it has become an increasingly rare and therefore valuable resource, especially the hardwoods and even more especially the foreign hardwoods like teak and mahogany.

Some home-grown hardwoods are just as dear, think of walnut and then you just have the ordinarily expensive ones like cherry, oak, cedar, maple and willow. Less expensive, but still not cheap are pine and birch.

If you like the rich dark colour of mahogany but cannot afford it, you could always stain a cheaper wood the colour of mahogany. It is not difficult and you can attain very pleasing results. One tip that all interior designers give though, is not to have different colour timbers in the same room.

You can mix different types of timber, but they should all be near enough the same colour. If you have different colours either move some pieces of furniture to a different room or stain the lighter ones to complement the darker ones. The other way around does not work, you cannot stain something lighter.

If you do not want to commit yourself to going into debt to get all you new furniture at once (and who can blame you), it is a good idea to buy the one article of furniture you see somewhere that you really, really like. Say a beautiful table or cabinet or suite of chairs. There is no need to be too practical here as you probably already have something to sit on, eat off, put things in and stand the TV on.

The purpose is that you are no longer happy with the items of furniture that you have and want to replace them. Buy your lovely thing and throw something out. Keep your eyes peeled for the next lovely thing that goes with your first lovely thing and when you have the money, buy it and throw something else out. You will have a patchwork quilt of a house for a while but if you tackle the house room by room, you will get there soon enough.

The Collie dog makes an exceptional sporting dog and can be trained to do the work of the Pointer and the Setter, together with that of the Water Spaniel and the Retriever. He can be trained to perform the work of other breeds too. He is smart at hunting, having an excellent nose, is a first-rate vermin-killer, and a most loyal guard dog and buddy.

Little is known with confidence of the origin of the Collie, but his craftiness and his external looks would seem to indicate a relationship with the wild dog. Buffon was of point of view that it was the true dog of nature, the standard and model for the whole canine species.

He considered the Sheepdog superior in instinct and intellect to all other breeds, and that, with a character which other breeds do not share. It is the only animal that is born perfectly qualified for the service of man.

At the shows this type of dog is almost always at the top of the group. It is considered the most obedient, and is certainly one of the most lively. The second most popular breed of this type is the smooth-coated variety, which is a very hard-working, helpful dog, well adapted for hill work and normally really fleet of foot.

He is not so amiable in temper as the black and white, and is slow to make friends. There is not a more graceful and physically beautiful dog to be seen than the show Collie of the current period. Bred from the old working dog, he is now almost a distinct breed.

The skull should be flat, fairly wide between the ears, and steadily tapering towards the eyes. There should just be a slight depression at the bottom. The width of skull necessarily depends upon the joint length of skull and muzzle; and the whole must be measured in connection with the size of the animal. The cheeks should not be full or prominent.

The muzzle ought to be of a decent length, tapering to the nose, and must not show weakness. Whatever the colour of the dog, the nose must be black. The teeth should be of a decent size, sound and level; very slight unevenness is allowed.

The mouth should be clean-cut and powerful. The eyes are a very essential feature, giving expression to the dog; they should be of medium size, set somewhat at an angle, of almond shape and brown colour except in the case of merles, when the eyes are often (one or both) blue and white or china; expressing high intelligence, with a bright, alert look when they are listening.

The ears should be and moderately wide at the base, located not too close together but on the top of the skull and not on the side of the head. When in repose they should be carried thrown back, but when on the alert brought forward and carried semi-erect, with tips somewhat drooping in the attitude of listening.

The neck should be muscular, powerful, of reasonable length, and a little arched. The body should be burly, with well sprung ribs, deep chest, fairly broad behind the shoulders, which should be sloping, loins very powerful..

The fore legs must be straight and muscular, leaning neither in nor out at the elbows, with a fair amount of bone; the forearm somewhat plump, the pasterns showing suppleness without frailty. The hind-legs should be muscular at the thighs, clean and sinewy below the hocks, with well-bent stifles. The feet should be in shape, soles well padded, and the toes vaulted and close together.

Its general character is to be a lissom, lively dog, his deep chest showing lung power, his neck strength, his sloping shoulders and well bent hocks representing speed, and his expression of high intelligence. It should be a fair length in the leg, giving him more of a racy than a plodding appearance.

In a few words, a Collie should show endurance, activity, and intelligence, with free and deliberate actions. In height dogs should be 22 ins. to 24 ins. at the shoulders, bitches 20 ins. to 22 ins. The weight for dogs is 45 to 65 lbs., bitches 40 to 55 lbs. The smooth collie only differs from the rough in its coat, which ought to be hard, thick and very smooth.

If you have had a swimming pool for some time or if you are about to get one – either an above-ground or an in-ground swimming pool – you must check to see whether your district requires you to take any safety precautions. For example, some states in America call for the erection of a swimming pool safety fence by law, others are about to introduce such a law and others are thinking of calling for a pool alarm too.

However, it is not all one-sided. There are also benefits to the owner of the pool of installing a pool safety fence. The foremost benefit of such a fence is safety. If you have young children or grand-children, you do not always have the time to supervise them playing in the pool, so a fence is a way of allowing the kids to play in the garden while excluding them from the dangerous pool.

Kids can be scallywags, all adults know that even if some parents think that their own kids are not, you can bet your bottom dollar that someone else thinks they are. Our children know that they have to behave in front of us, but what happens while they know that we are not watching? You know, you were a kid yourself once. I climbed the fence into the municipal outdoor pool more than once whilst I was a teenager and mostly after a few beers.

The fact is that if you have an unprotected pool, there is a good chance that the local kids will use it when you are away and these days that means negligence on behalf of the pool owner. Whether that is right or wrong, it is like that and if someone should drown in your pool, you would be in big trouble, unless you could prove that your took reasonable measures to prevent unauthorized access to your pool.

A security pool fence is just about the cheapest way of doing that, although fences can be easily scaled as I full-well know. However, having a fence shows that you have thought about the problem and that you have tried to deter intruders.

There are quite a number of acceptable styles of pool fencing but it may vary from district to district, so it is first worth checking whether there are any local minimum standards in force in your region. Other than that, there are choices of wire, timber and steel. Wire can include mesh fences as well.

Wood almost certainly looks the best and gives the most options. If you want total privacy, you can have a full fence or if you would like to be able to see out, you could go for hit-and-miss vertical boarding. I do not like mesh, personally. I have painted tens of miles of fencing in my time and there always seems to be litter caught in the mesh. Iron railings are nice too, but pretty costly.

Whichever type of fence you go for, grow a continuous wall of the prickliest, thorniest bushes you can find around the base of it. Pyracanthas are ideal and the berries attract birds – wild birds, that is. Let them grow to three or four feet high and they will deter drunks and give the ladies some privacy whilst lying around the pool.

We are under great pressure not to look old, not to look our age. One of the best compliments individuals of more than 21 years think that they can receive is: ‘Really? You do not look it!’ To some extent this obsession with a youthful appearance has always been with us, but the pressure has ratcheted up due to films and TV.

Film stars and pharmaceutical companies unscrupulously team up to persuade us that we need this surgery too in order to be well-liked. What they do not tell you is that the pharmaceutical companies have paid the film stars to have free treatment and then paid (or sponsored) the chat programmes that so blatantly advertise them.

And ageism is rife as well, both among the young, whose worst insults usually have the word ‘old’ included and among employers who can not wait to be rid of employees at 65 after a lifetime of service. Governments or at least some governments are exactly as bad, penalizing pensioners with a meager salary after fifty years of paying taxes.

Individuals used to grow old gracefully, now it is a sin. There is a long list of ‘improvements’ that you can work your way through: face lift, liposuction, hair transplants, dentures and several others, but the one that really makes sense to me is sight improvement by whatever technique works.

We live in a picturesque world and it is a pity that whilst we are at the correct stage in our life to enjoy it – that is whilst we have more time, more money and have become more reflective, we begin to go blind. Just as your grandchildren begin arriving, your sight begins to go.

There are numerous factors why you could begin losing your eyesight besides only old age, but old age does play a part in some of them as well.

Macular degeneration is usually called age-related macular degeneration, but there is a rare kind that has an impact on the young. There are two kinds wet and dry. The dry kind is less severe, but the wet kind is more easily treated.

Cataracts are thought to be age-related as well, but I had premature senile cataracts 20 years early. Luckily these are easily treated too with merely a couple of minutes of surgery. Glaucoma is a nasty one, which can leave you totally blind, if you do not catch it soon enough and have it treated.

The key to success with all of these eyesight impairments is tackling them early. If you suspect that anything is not right with your eyes, go to a GP or optician immediately. Do not get fooled by quack cures that you may see advertised on late night TV or in the small ads. They should be banned.

Eye exercises and eye drops are all right for healthy eyes, but they will not help you if you have a difficulty, only a fully qualified expert can do that. These advertisers prey on individuals who either do not have the money for surgery or who are scared of it and there are many of them about too.

Mosquitoes, those tiny insects that make us uncomfortable, could also lay us open to malaria, dengue and chikungunya. They live in damp areas and reproduce in water.

The life cycle of this bug begins in holes filled with water, tide water pools in salt marshes, sewage effluent ponds, irrigated pastures and rain water ponds.

The four main types of mosquitoes, namely Aedes, Anopheles, Culex, and Culiseta, each have their own distinctive environmental requirements and this helps us to identify a particular species also.

It is best to note that all mosquitoes have four distinctive phases, namely the egg, larva, pupa and adult stages, in their life cycle. The eggs are laid on water or on damp surfaces and float on them. In addition, species like Culex and Culiseta lay eggs of 100 or more that are discovered stuck to each other in the fashion of a raft.

However, Anopheles mosquitoes lay their eggs on water and Aedes are known to lay their eggs usually on damp ground. The eggs take two days to hatch and metamorphose into the larval stage.

The mosquito larvae, known popularly as wrigglers or wigglers, live in water for a period of a week or two depending on the temperature of the water. The larvae swim frequently to the surface of the water to take in oxygen with the aid of siphon tunes.

However, species like the Anopheles have no such mechanism and generally breathe by lying flat on the water. It is interesting to note that mosquito larvae shed their skin four times and after the fourth stage they metamorphose into pupae.

Mosquito pupae, commonly called “tumblers”, live in water for from one to four days depending largely on the species and temperature. In this stage, known as the resting and non-eating stage in the life cycle, the insect can be seen lying on the surface of water.

In this phase it breathes through its two breathing tubes called trumpets. This is the vital and last stage before the mosquito changes into an adult and begins spreading infection. Once the development is over, the pupa opens and the adult comes out.

Once the adult mosquito is formed, it waits on the surface of the water for its skin to dry and harden. After a while, the mosquito is able to spread its wings and fly. It is interesting to remember that adult female mosquitoes are more aggressive than the males that feed just on the nectar of flowers.

Aedes female mosquitoes are known for their sore and enduring bites particularly during the daytime and they attack mostly humans. The Culex specie is similar to Aedes, However they are known to attack after dusk and have a preference for domestic and wild birds. They transmit encephalitis and sleeping sickness.

The Culiseta species of mosquito is a moderately aggressive biter that strikes during the evening hours and in the shade. Anopheles mosquitoes are known for spreading malaria in humans.

Ultimately, it is a good idea to know that most female mosquitoes have to feed on an animal before they can produce eggs, with some dying before laying viable eggs.

Furthermore, some species live near their breeding place while others fly as far as 100 miles from their breeding spot. Male mosquitoes have a shorter life span than female mosquitoes.

Owen Jones writes articles on several subjects, but is now concerned with Hand Held Insect Killer devices and static units at Electronic Insect Killers.

Malaria, a mosquito-borne disease caused by mosquito bites that carry a parasite of the genus Plasmodium, is widely common in tropical and subtropical countries in Asia, South and Central America and the Middle East. Malaria is more prevalent in regions with lots of rainfall and constant high temperatures that supply the perfect conditions for bugs to thrive and multiply.

Malarial bouts start with multiplication of the plasmodium virus in the red blood cells and could have long-lasting and even fatal effects.

Malaria begins with headaches, fever and chills and could, in later stages, also lead to coma. Malaria has 3 stages, the first stage beginning with fever, shivering, joint pain, vomiting, anemia, hemoglobinuria, retinal injury and fits.

This could happen for 4 to 6 hours every alternate day, every three days or might happen every four days. As the disease progresses into the second stage, one could experience feelings of heat and dryness, while the third stage could result in extreme fatigue and weakness.

It is however worth noting that the first indications occur about 10 to 15 days after the mosquito bite when it multiplies and bursts the red blood cells.

The effects of malaria especially in children must not be overlooked because a bite from this insect can lead to high intracranial pressure that becomes evident as unusual posture caused by acute brain damage.

Malaria caused by mosquito bites could lead to other serious consequences like cognitive impairment, widespread anaemia and neurological damage with cerebral malaria. Cerebral malaria could cause retinal whitening that is the most distinguishing clinical sign of malaria.

Malaria caused by mosquitoes could in severe cases show up as an enlarged spleen, chronic headache, clots of blood in the brain, inflamed liver, low blood sugar and hemoglobinuria which could lead to renal failure.

Other significant side effects caused by this mosquito bite disease could be dehydration, liver or kidney failure and breathing issues caused by fluid in the lungs.

Rupture of the spleen might lead to internal bleeding with the spread of infection leading to inflammation of the meninges, or membranes, that enclose the brain and spinal cord.

The control of malaria starts with the use of mosquito nets, the use of insect repellents and the spraying of insecticides in places where mosquitoes could breed easily.

Home pest control begins with not having water standing about in buckets, tubs and the spraying of insecticides in drains which are ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Mosquito repellents could be chemical based or could also be in the form of herbal or biological pest control with the planting of mosquito repellent plants in the environment.

It is best to note that one way of pest control lies in protecting oneself from mosquito bites by avoiding going out at dawn and dusk. It pays to have mosquito mesh on all the doors and windows at home. Avoiding wearing dark colors and opting for long sleeved shirts and long trousers would also help.

Pest control includes using repellents like creams, lotions and electronic devices. It is best to kill mosquitoes by spraying insecticides, but this ought to be done some time before entering the room. Last but not least, avoiding mosquito bites is the most effective pest control every time.

June 11th, 2011RV Safety Tools

A family journey in an RV or ‘recreational vehicle’ can be great fun, and one of the ways that you can try to make sure that it goes well, is to plan for as many eventualities as possible. This involves taking a few safety items or safety tools that are helpful for an RV trip.

If you are travelling far from the beaten track, then adequate supplies of food and water are the prime concerns obviously. You will also need adequate suitable clothing for the season of the year and the place you are travelling in.

However, remember, that some regions are chilly at night no matter what season of the year it is, so a couple of jumpers or light jackets will come in useful if you are driving in the mountains, in the north (in the northern hemisphere) or along the coast.

Once you have the prerequisites to survive, there are a few luxury safety devices, that you might find practical. The first of these is the mobile phone. There may or might not be sufficient coverage where you are going, but the chances are that it will work somewhere near, if you need to use it. Be certain that you have a charger that works in the RV and a hands free kit if possible.

The luxury of all luxuries is a GPS unit – Global Positioning System – so that you do not become too lost, if you are out in the boondocks or even in some large, unknown metropolis searching for the hotel you booked into over the Internet for a few days break from the road.

If you are renting your RV, there is almost certainly a GPS system on board, but if you are taking your own vehicle, you might consider purchasing a mobile phone that also has GPS built into it. These hand held devices are plenty accurate to steer you back on track.

However, they are electrical devices and as such can break down at any moment, especially when you especially require them, so make sure that you have a current road map as well.

Whilst you are on vacation, the weather is quite important – in fact it can make or break a holiday, so why not take a portable weather radio with you? A weather radio is exactly what it implies. It is a radio that specializes in picking up weather transmissions – especially local ones.

This is very handy indeed, especially if where you are heading is not undergoing the type of weather you are looking for. It allows you to modify your destination without having to be there first. These useful devices often come with other tools built in like a torch and a timer (alarm clock).

Make sure that your RV has an adequate set of vehicle repair tools including gloves and safety goggles. Gloves are practical for keeping your hands clean if you have a repair to make and safety goggles come in very handy if you have to swap a wheel in a dust, rain or snow storm.

The last thing on our list, but not the least important, is a good First Aid Kit. When selecting a First Aid kit, comprehensive is definitely better than compact.

June 10th, 2011Finding Antique Car Shows

Are you interested in gorgeous old cars? Lots of individuals are and there are lots of antique car exhibitions in America and Europe to prove it. Antique car shows are a good way of viewing these old cars and standing up close to them. They are a fully working part of automotive history – many of them are a hundred years old and still working fine.

So, if you want to go to a show of ancient cars, how do you go about finding one? It depends on what you would like really, because there are basically two types of car show.

There is the permanent form, a sort of museum, usually a private collection which is open to the public like the one owned by the Marquis of Beaulieu, the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, the New Forest in the UK.

Then there are the rallies of antique car aficionados and owners like the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. There is a equivalent event organized by Louis-Vuitton which takes place at different European locations, but I last saw it at Portofino in northern Italy.

The museums tend to be open all the year round, but the rallies normally take place in the summer, because lots of the old cars were open topped and uncomfortable to drive in the rain and the cold.

The obvious place to begin searching for a collection or rally of antique cars in your area is on the Net, but there are also plenty of magazines on the subject full of great glossy pictures of old, unusual cars. These magazines will also carry notification of up and coming activities.

If you favour the personal touch, look up an antique, veteran or classic car club in your region and go along to their next meeting. You are certain to meet someone there who can advise you on the best up and coming rallies of old cars and the best collections or museums in and around your area.

Really, this is almost certainly your best option if you live in a city. You cannot beat the face to face approach for getting the best knowledge and seeing the enthusiasm in the eyes of the vintage car driver. It is infectious to talk with anyone who is passionate concerning their hobby.

If you still choose to look on the Net, one of the more personal methods of obtaining information about vintage car activities, is to sign up for some newsletters.

Simply do a general search on, say, ‘vintage car rallies’ or ‘vintage car museums’, visit a couple of sites and sign up for the newsletters of the sites that take your fancy.

In this fashion, you are certain to get advanced notification of all the top vintage car shows and you may even be given a coupon to save you money on the entrance fee too.

June 10th, 2011Ancient Medicines

As you all know, the way that it works with medicine is: you get sick, you go to the medical doctor, he/she gives you a prescription, you buy that, take it and hopefully make a full recovery. In a way, it has always been like that. Individuals went to the most skilled person in the village for advice on how to cure an ailment, a couple of herbs were prescribed and a donation was given.

The only real dissimilarity in the course of action nowadays is that then, there was a far higher general awareness of the power of herbs. Nowadays, in the West at least, the medical profession and the pharmaceuticals have managed to wean us off herbs by one manner or another – normally fear.

The fact is that most drugs are manufactured from herbs or plants or from synthesized chemicals found in herbs and plants. In a way, all we have done is substituted purchasing for picking.

OK, I know that it is more complicated than that. Drugs are often combinations that work well together and being told to take one tablet a day saves you having to worry about overdosing, but there are still often side-effects. Just read the leaflet inside the box of your next box of pills.

Mine says: anxiety, fainting, erectile dysfunction, low blood pressure, diarrheoa and heart failure. Enchanting, isn’t it? They are pills for high blood pressure (beta-blockers). I live in a small village in northern Thailand, where high blood pressure is not a difficulty, but I know one old lady who has it and high cholesterol and her nurse showed her which tree to choose leaves from to make a tea. She does not take tablets, but I still do.

There is also a woman who started coming into our garden four months ago to pick purple flowers off a kind of wisteria that we grow (dork anchan). ‘It is for my son’s very bad cough’, she said. Asthma, I think she meant.

Anyway, she picks a handful a week and her son is fine. I had a cough at Christmas and tried it myself. I drank two cups of tea before going to bed and I drank the cold dregs in the morning, but my cough had already gone.

The hottest time of the year here is March – May, after which it is still hot but the monsoons come and cool it down. Last year, for the first time in my life I suffered from prickly heat in the hot spell. This year it began again, but someone recommended Aloe Vera.

‘Of course’, said my wife and went into the garden to cut some. She cut two small ‘leaves’ and I spent three days dabbing the sap onto the affected areas. It had almost gone on the second day, but it vanished on the third day and has not returned in spite of the fact that it has become hotter since then.

A great deal of individuals are taking another look at traditional treatments and I am going to be one of them. The problem in our village is that my Thai is not good, just my wife speaks some English and individuals are afraid to talk about the old ways in case I think that they are backward.

Cooking inside in the summer is such as a nuisance, is it not? You would like to be outside in the fresh air instead of sweating at a hot cooker but anyway, you are not even sure that the family or even yourself will want to eat hot food once it has been prepared. This is a problem that lots of household cooks face in the summer, especially if there is a young family involved.

Young Johnny will not touch ‘rabbit food’ – he wants meat and little Jenny does not want sandwiches again, because she had them for lunch. So, what do you do?

The crockpot can come to the rescue quite perfectly. Because it cooks over a long time without a lot of heat, so the kitchen will not warm up much. You can put a casserole or a stew in there in the morning before going to work and let it cook all day and then, when you get back, you can just knock up a salad for those who do not require a full meal.

It covers all the bases without costing any extra time on your part. Not just that, but if no one wants what is in the crockpot, nothing is lost and it can be warmed up again the next day.

Utilizing a crockpot to cook in this way will also save a great deal on electricity. Why? Not just for the cooking of the food in the crockpot, but also because if you cooked a traditional meal in the summer heat, you would have to turn on the air conditioning and the extractor fan.

This means that using the crockpot to help supply an alternative or even the primary meal during the summer is a win-win situation whichever way you look at it and it is cheaper too.

That takes care of the primary meal, but if there is more agreement in your family and you know from the start that everybody will eat a salad, you could use the crockpot to prepare a sweet. Or you could purchase a second crockpot.

Regrettably, crockpot cooking has acquired the reputation of just being good for preparing stews, but the fact is that this is very far from the truth. You can use it for roasting a joint or baking a cheesecake with loads of choices in between.

Two more benefits of cooking with a crockpot are:

Firstly, if you cook in a hurry, there is a predisposition to use rice or pasta as a filler instead of vegetables, whereas if you can prepare the vegetables a while before hand it is simpler to include them

Secondly, there is just one pan to clean after eating instead of two or three or more. This saves more time and energy too.

You almost certainly have never been shown how to use your crockpot for cooking anything more difficult than a stew, so perhaps the first thing to do is buy yourself a decent crockpot recipe book which teaches a wide variety of meals including sweets and breads.

Do you have a little girl in your life? Say a young daughter or a young niece? If she is between about five and ten years of age? If you are wondering what you can get a little girl of this age as a present, then perhaps I can help you out with a few tips

Does she like playing with dolls? Then I am willing to bet that she would like a doll’s pram. Young girls like to imitate their mums and the mothers that they see on the street. They like to walk with their friends, pushing their dolls in their prams around the garden.

Some people say that this is a bad thing to encourage, but despite trying to discourage parents from purchasing stereotypical toys for boys and, especially, girls for thirty or forty years, young girls still like to play with dolls and doll’s prams, Wendy Houses and toy tea sets..

Those young girls from the Seventies and Eighties are now in their thirties and forties, many of them are feminists as well, so the experience of playing with dolls and dolls’ prams and other traditional girls’ toys does not seem to have done them any harm.

In fact, I think that it is much healthier for girls to play with dolls than it is for boys to play at being soldiers or cowboys wielding toy guns, although even that probably does not do any harm. Boys have probably been playing with toy guns, toy bows and arrows or even toy spears for thousands of years.

And I dare say that young girls have been playing with dolls and giving them tea parties for just as long as well. While I was in infants’ school fifty years ago, our class had a Wendy House and girls and boys played in there together, although it was more for the girls – I do remember thinking that.

Traditional girls’ presents like dolls, dolls’ prams, Wendy Houses and toy tea sets type of went out of fashion in the West in the last twenty-five years of the Twentieth Century, but they are back again now. These traditional girls’ toys can get seen in all the toys catalogues and toy stores such as Toys R Us.

They seem to be a lot cheaper now than they used to be as well, unless you want a dolls’ pram from one of the long-established pram manufacturers like Silver Cross. Silver Cross dolls’ prams are beautifully made displaying all the attention to detail and quality that they put into their full-size prams, which were ‘By Appointment to His and Her Royal Highnesses’ the kings and queens of the United Kingdom from about the mid 1930′s to the mid-1980′s.

At the moment Silver Cross, which has outlets all more than the world and on the Net, is also giving away a classic rag doll with each purchase of one of their prams.
