One of the oddest social or cultural phenomena since the Second World War is the change in criteria which individuals use to buy clothing. For thousands of years before then, people liked the best possible clothing that they could get and one of the criteria that they used to judge eachother was their dress sense or the quality of their clothes.

This all started to change in the Seventies when it became more significant to not be seen wearing the same article too often, so it became more desirable to have five cheap shirts that would not last long than to have one high quality shirt that would last for years. How did this shift in principles come about?

The most obvious people to blame are the fashion designers (or their imitators) and the advertisers. Individuals without much money to spend on clothes do not like to be seen in the same blue shirt on every other occasion, they would rather have several colours, but perhaps these individuals do not understand the difference in the quality.

The quality of one’s clothing is vital as most women and about half as many men know. First impressions count and bright and cheerful (but cheap) is not as impressive to those who know the difference as quality.

To those people who say that the person should count over the clothing, I would say ‘Yes, in a perfect world. One day, but it is not the way it works now’. Why do people dress up for a date, and especially the first date? Why do people dress up for an interview? And why do individuals dress up to go to court?

It is because clothing matters and first impressions count and deep down, we all know it even though most of us wish that it did not matter so much.

First of all, it is vital to find a style that suits you. Then you ought to buy pieces of clothing that are decent examples of that style. They will not be cheap, but is a Hell’s Angel’s leather jacket cheap? Absolutely not. Whatever niche you think you fit into or would like to fit into, buy the appropriate clothing to stand out for quality.

I am not saying that people have to dress appropriate to their age group, I am saying that people should dress appropriate to the upper echelons of their niche group. If you would like to become a Hell’s Angel, get one of the best leather jackets and if you want to work in an office, buy yourself a good suit. Just because you cannot tell the difference between a cheap one and a decent one does not mean that your peers cannot as well.

You just have so much scope to transform your physical appearance, but you can still create a big impression by wearing quality clothing like a decent overcoat, a decent suit, a good cardigan or a good shirt. The ones who know the difference will notice and it will not damage your prospects.

Hut tubs have been commercially available for around 50 years, so you can guess that the technology has come a long way. In the early days, hot tubs were normally only a small round wooden tub that was bursting at the seams with more than two individuals in it. They were invariably round in shape and there was very little choice.

The first hot tubs to appear in the States were seen in the 1940′s, but they were usually little more that than wooden barrels filled with hot water intended to give a long deep soak. In the 1950′s, the idea grew and families started to create or buy hot tubs in order to relax and to alleviate the indications of arthritis. By the mid 1960′s, individuals were adding home-manufactured heaters and pumps and very crude versions of the contemporary wooden hot tub were being born.

One early innovator was Roy Jacuzzi who invented and marketed the first hot tub that incorporated swirling water and jets. This whirlpool bath literally began the whole industry in 1968. In the early 1970′s, manufacturers began to incorporate stronger jets into their hot tubs and some manufacturers started constructing more comfortable designs out of fibreglass and acrylic. The business was taking off big time.

Jacuzzi started to produce bigger models so that friends or a family could all enjoy the experience together. Most of the modernizations since the late 1970′s have been technical, but these technical improvements have been quite serious.

The filters are more easily accessible these days which means that they are more likely to be cleaned as often as they ought to be in order to avoid the build up of bacteria from rotting vegetation and hair. This will pollute the water and could pose a health hazard. Not only that, but clogged filters means that the pump has to work harder to circulate the water which means more wear and tear and eventually, more cost.

There is a greater choice of materials and colours nowadays. Before, the choice was: what sort of timber do you prefer? Now you can still have that option, plus the choice of any colour acrylic you want too. Or you can have an acrylic tub inside a wooden (or synthetic wood) exterior or skirt.

The advantages of the synthetic materials are that they last longer, are easier to clean and can be impregnated with a substance that kills or wards off bacteria and mould.

The seating arrangement can be personalized in contemporary spas to suit individual bathers. Every seat might have one or more directable jets and the seat itself might be made to a specific height for a certain person or for a certain injury or condition.

The water heating arrangements are a lot more flexible as well. Nowadays, the water can be heated by gas, electricity, your homes central heating system or by solar power, which is a colossal improvement if you live in a country that enjoys a great deal of sun.

To top it all off, you can add aromatherapy oils and spa salt crystals to the water by placing them in a draw like in a washing machine and have them circulated in the water evenly.

If you want to get some new garden furniture, the first thing to do is think about the styles of garden furniture that would suit your garden and your requirements. If you already have an idea of what you would like, you are already half way there, otherwise you will have to do some research on the different styles of garden furniture

This research can be done on line very easily by typing ‘garden furniture’ into Google, but if you would rather more depth on the furniture, you could get a few magazines on gardening and landscaping. If you prefer a more hands-on tactic, you can go around the home improvement stores and the garden centres.

In fact, you will have to go to the shops sooner or later anyway unless you intend buying on line too. I personally like to do some exploration on the Internet first and then use the knowledge that I gleaned from there to make informed decisions in the shop. I do not really trust the photos. I want to see and touch the garden furniture and check the joints and finish.

Once you get to the garden centre, you will discover various styles of garden furniture including: farmhouse or rustic, contemporary or modern, resort or poolside and these can be manufactured from hardwood, softwood, plastic or metal.

Hardwood is by far the most popular material for garden furniture and most people prefer the farmhouse style, although there are some fantastic modern styles too.

No matter which style you prefer or what it is manufactured of the number one best piece of advice is to get the best quality that you can afford. This is true of most items you can buy, but I think that it is particularly true of garden furniture because it will have a very hard life. Just imagine it: snow, rain, heat; temperatures varying from -5c to + 35c and varying humidity.

Cheap plastic cannot erect with those circumstances. I used to buy cheap plastic and needed to replace it every eighteen months. Then I bought expensive plastic and I still have some of that but in essence it only lasted three years. I have seen metal garden furniture and it always rusts, even if it is plastic coated, enamelled or painted. Softwood lasts well, but it will rot after approximately five years even if it is quite well taken care of.

The only garden furniture that I have ever bought or seen at friends’ houses that lasts and looks good all that time is hardwood. There is a wide selection of hardwoods. There are native hardwoods like oak, cherry, walnut, maple and beech and foreign hardwoods like mahogany and teak. These hardwoods can also be stained to virtually any colour although most people prefer the natural look.

Hardwood garden furniture is easy to maintain as well: just rub it over with linseed oil once or twice a year. If you carry out this simple maintenance procedure the timber will not dry out and it will endure the elements for twenty years or more ensuring that you get maximum value for money from this, the finest of all the styles of garden furniture.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a range of subjects, but is now involved with farmhouse dining tables. If you would like to know more, please visit our website at Solid Oak Dining Tables.

Once you have finished laying your patio, your deck or your lawn, you will unquestionably start thinking about how you can enjoy more time out of doors. Therefore, you will need some garden furniture. Many places sell garden furniture. You can try home improvement centres, large department stores and garden centres. There are also businesses on line that will deliver. The difficult job is picking your garden furniture.

There is a very broad choice of designs of garden furniture – a style to suit every person and complement every garden. So, before hurrying down to the garden centre, it is worth considering for a while what you would like to accomplish with your open-air seating area. Do you require a theme? Do you want to entertain or dine there? Or do you just want to sit peacefully, take pleasure in your garden and read a magazine?

Indeed, the answer may well be a permutation of all those things. If you simply want to sit there with a drink and a book, you may be satisfied to just buy a couple of chairs and a small table, but if you want to have guests or eat family meals outside, you may prefer a more substantial table. A large oak table would be quite costly, but it would look magnificent and last for a ten years or more.

If you choose a table, you will have to have chairs to match, but do you want loungers as well? They could be of plastic and kept in the shed until required.

You will likely need some form of shade. This can be supplied by folding, even removable umbrellas or by overhanging trees or shrubs. Wisteria or clematis can do the task as well and cost you next to nothing.

Do you intend cooking in this space? If you do, what and how? Do you fancy a barbecue pit or a proper hob and oven? A lot of people in regions where the climate permits are doing a great deal of cooking outside in a carbon copy of an indoor kitchen, but without all the walls.. If you plan the outdoor kitchen carefully, you will be able to use it in the rain too. I find it lovely not to have kitchen smells in the house and cooking out of doors is a good experience as well.

If it gets nippy in the evenings then you can consider getting some patio heaters. They are not expensive to buy or to run and one standard patio heater can keep quite a crowd of people warm. (By the word ‘standard’ here, I mean standing, like a lamp post).

Lighting is the last major consideration in the list when choosing garden furniture. There are actually two sorts of garden lighting to consider: lighting to see by and lighting to lure insects away. Again, you could use standard lamps to illuminate your patio. They cast their light far enough so that you can still look at your garden after dark or you could have separate wall light on dimmers.

The one light I would categorically have is a mosquito lantern. Hang this away from where you sit, because they do draw insects to them which they then electrocute with a pleasing zap.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article writes on quite a few topics, but is at present concerned with visual comfort lighting. If you would like to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at Outdoor Wall Lamps.

Snoring is considered a ‘benign problem’ by most people who snore. A bit of a joke really. But it is no joke to people who have to listen to it. No joke at all. Snoring can also be a sign that there is a deeper problem. It is similar to obstructive sleep apnoea, but is not necessarily the same.

It is equivalent to obstructive sleep apnoea too in that the sufferer is rarely aware of the difficulty – that is left to a sleeping partner or everyone else in the house.

Deprivation of sleep may sound like bad luck or something that can be caught up on the next day, but in actual fact it goes far deeper than that. Those who have not had a decent night’s sleep find it difficult to concentrate and might even nod off. This is obviously not a good idea if you are a driver.

Sleep apnoea causes a lack of quality sleep on a regular basis and so it is no surprise that sufferers of obstructive sleep apnoea run three times more danger of a driving accident or a serious accident at work than others. That is horrific enough, but the sleeping partner of a sufferer of obstructive sleep apnoea runs the same increased danger.

Apnoea also puts more strain on the heart and is a major issue in high blood pressure. It also starves the brain of oxygen with whatever effects that may have.

There are a number of methods of treating snoring (apnoea is normally treated with an oxygen mask known as CPAP).

There are nose strips which stop the walls of the nose collapsing and reverberating, if that is your problem. There are special pillows that raise the head reducing the weight of a heavy neck on the windpipe. There are dental appliances to stop the tongue and other parts slipping back into the airway causing an obstruction. There is acupuncture and there is hypnotism.

However, it is worth saying, that most of the loudest snorers are overweight. For these people, the first approach has to be to lose weight, because that will also benefit them in many other ways too.

Some people find that switching their sleeping position assists with their snoring. The worst position for snoring is lying on your back. Lying on your side is a decent way of decreasing snoring as can lying on your front.

The thing to keep in mind is the weight of your skin and flesh weighing down on your windpipe, especially on your throat. There is also the problem of your tongue and palate falling into the back of your throat and either vibrating or blocking the passage – lying on your side or front stops this happening.

Bed bugs used to be a part of eveyone’s daily life before the Second World War – or should that be ‘a part of everyone’s nocturnal life’? For hundreds of years, people merely grinned and bore it; they had to because there were no effectual methods of getting rid of them.

They lived in the stored clothes, the furniture, the bedding and the houses of the rich and poor alike and because houses were located so close together, families were larger and people were in and out of each others houses, you could not wipe out a bed bug infestation for long.

Then came the bombing of European cities in the Second World War 1939-1945 and many inner cities were unsafe, so the authorities decided to take the opportunity to flatten the inner city slums and start again. An equivalent programme was began in America, but not because of devastation.

The authorities pulled down hundreds of millions of houses and made billions of rats, mice, bed bugs, fleas and other nasties homeless. In fact, rat poison and a new wonder insecticide, DDT, were used widely in the clean up. By the end of the Forties or during the Fifties, bed bugs were just about eradicated from the Western World.

The Baby Boomer generation was the first one never to have been bothered by bed bugs. This happy situation lasted until the mid-Nineties, when increased long haul travel and increased immigration permitted bed bugs to hitch lifts back to the West. These unwelcome hitch hikers usually returned on garments that had been packed away in suitcases.

And so here we are today, in a state of affairs where the West’s major inner cities have a bed bug problem of epidemic proportions. Bed bugs are being passed around from person to person on all types of public transport but particularly buses, trains and taxis and anywhere where individuals gather together, but especially hotels, cinemas and waiting rooms.

So, here are a few suggestions on how to avoid infesting your home with bed bugs. If you stop in hotels a couple of nights or one night at a time, merely unpack what you require to at any one time. In other words, live out of your suitcase.

If you are on a longer vacation, by all means, take out everything, but keep your suitcase closed and have all your clothes boil washed, dry cleaned or tumble-dried on ‘HOT’ before you repack them to go home.

If this cannot be done because of the sort of cloth, examine all the seams, hems, pockets, cuffs and collars and blow them with the hair-dryer on ‘HOT’. The hair-dryer is not anywhere near as effective, but all stages of a bed bug’s life cycle are killed by seven minutes exposure to temperatures above 45C or 115F.

If you cannot heat-treat your clothing before you leave the hotel, seal them up in plastic bags and treat them when you arrive home – preferably in a laundrette or dry cleaners.

What do you do about your overcoat, if you mix with people every day on the bus or at work? This is a difficult one. Bed bugs are resilient to all forms of insect killer, which is why we are experiencing this epidemic, so you will literally have to examine your overcoat every time you come home or get one that you can put in the tumble-dryer each night.

One bed bug can lay 300 eggs and go for a year without feeding, so you cannot know that you have not got bed bugs, you can merely say that you have not seen any – yet.

June 3rd, 2011Water And Exercise

We, as human beings, as very reliant on water. We are approximately 70% water and we cannot live without it. In fact, we can go weeks without food, but merely about three days without water.

One of the sad facts about the Western diet is that a great deal of people no longer drink water. They have completely replaced water with sugary soft drinks, which of course contain enough water but also contain too much sugar or sugar substitute.

The first step that these individuals have to take in order to get back on track is to stop this silly, childish habit and start drinking plain water again. It has been worked out that about two-thirds of individuals do not drink enough water, which is saying that they are in a permanent condition of partial dehydration.

Water has several important functions in our bodies, but one of the most vital ones is to flush out toxins. It is worth knowing that when you feel thirsty, your body has arrived at a state where it is crying out for water. In other words, it has already passed the state where it needs water, so strive not to wait until you are thirsty before you take a drink.

Another fact is that tea, coffee and alcohol (some of our most well-liked adult drinks) are diuretics, which is to say that they force urination, often more than they replace. So you can put 250mm in but you may lose 270mm. This is naturally not the purpose of drinking if you are thirsty

Exercise is another reason why we lose water. In fact, merely by being alive, we lose water due to body heat and evaporation, but while we are actually doing something, we lose water fairly rapidly. You may get worried about drinking water before going to sleep, but if you can do it, it is a very healthy thing.

If you wake up a bit groggy each day and need breakfast, tea or coffee before you can actually wake up, it might be because of dehydration, not because you have problems waking up. Being dehydrated causes drowsiness and lack of concentration.

In fact, dehydration is a major killer in the Third World. This is not because there is no water, but because the water is contaminated. This contaminated water causes diarrhoea which causes dehydration. It is vital to keep drinking when you are sick even if you do not feel like eating.

It is recommended that we drink at least eight tumblers of water (say, of 250mm each) a day. More if you are exercising or sick. It sounds like a great deal of water, but most individuals are awake for about 16 hours a day, so eight glasses works out to merely one each two hours.

It is more of a difficulty to get into the habit of drinking water on a regular basis than it is to really do the drinking, but once you have established the habit, you will feel better on a day-to-day basis. It will not prevent you from getting sick, but your general degree of health will improve, because you are getting rid of toxins.

Most people do not look forward to death. They would like to live a long life and endeavour to stay eternally young. The peoples of each country spend billions every year on health care and beauty products.

Some individuals believe that the length of time you live is written in fate and there is nothing that you can do about it, others believe that we only have a certain number of heart beats, but most individuals think that genetics, diet and lifestyle are the major influences.

However, there might be another factor worth looking into: your place of residence. There are a couple of places in the world where people appear to live longer, on average, than is normal for their country or globally.

Take the city of Okinawa in southern Japan. Okinawa has more than a million inhabitants, 900 of whom are over 100 years of age. Japan has an aging populace in general, but nowhere there is the same as Okinawa for longevity and the percentage of centenarians is between four and five times higher than in the UK or the USA.

Not just do Okinawans live longer, but they also tend to stay healthy until their dying days, which is everyone’s dream. Diet is thought to be the main reason why Okinawans live such long, healthy lives. They eat a great deal of fish, tofu, soya and seaweed and swill it down with lots of tea.

This makes their diet low in saturated fats and pretty low in salt. However, it is also a widely-held belief in Okinawa that one should just consume until one is 80% full not 100% This may put less strain on the digestive system, but no one is quite sure yet if this has a bearing on living a longer, healthy life.

Then there is Loma Linda in California, the USA. The citizens of Loma Linda live an average of five to ten years longer than the residents of near-by towns. The town is mainly Seventh Day Adventist, which preaches vegetarianism, no smoking and no alcohol. Some will look to these reasons as the reasons for living longer.

However, this does not account for why almost everyone, even the smoking, alcohol-drinking, meat-eating residents, lives longer. Others put the longevity down to religious belief, but researchers are mystified. Perhaps going to church and depending on God relieves believers of some of the stress of daily life and stress is well-known to be a reason for major diseases.

Another strange place is Owoda on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia. It is just a village of less than 2,000 residents but it has far more than the average number of 100 year olds than elsewhere. What is even stranger is that there are as many old men as old women which is not the norm anywhere else in the world.

The well-known Mediterranean diet and the pleasant climate are considered to be factors at play here, but it may also have something to do with their genes. The residents were virtually isolated for hundreds of years and marriage among relatives was not unusual. Usually this is not recommended because it can cause abnormalities. It looks like the abnormality that inter-marriage caused for the Owodans is longevity.

Are you thinking of holding a kids’ party on St Valentine’s Day? Then you would be wise to start thinking of St Valentine’s Day party games for kids too. Kids are more trouble when they are bored than when they are boisterous. Thinking up games is not much of a difficulty but there are usually two things to take into consideration: the age of the children and your finances.

The bouncy house always goes down well with children. You could hire a bouncy house for the day and hang hearts and flowers around the outside. Check on the Net first that the firm hiring out the bouncy house is a member of your country’s governing body for bouncy house rental firms.

You could split the children into teams and hold various races. One race could be the ‘Race of Hearts’, in which the kids have to run to the finishing line and back with a stuffed heart (or pillow) between their knees. It always results in lots of laughter.

Another race could be to ‘Wrap Mummy’ in which every team gets a couple of rolls of paper kitchen towel and they have to wrap up someone like a mummy as a gift. You could add bows and a name and address tag as well.

The teams could play ‘Mr and Mrs’ in which the compare gives a famous name and the teams have to click a clicker, bang a gong or ring a bell if they know the answer. The compare may say: ‘Samson’ the reply is ‘Delilah’; ‘Hilary Clinton’ – ‘Bill Clinton’; ‘Queen Elizabeth’ – ‘Prince Phillip’. You get the concept.

Split along gender lines, you could play the ‘King and the Queen of Hearts’. Do you remember those round sweets with a heart on them and a romantic saying in the heart? Well, they do not cost a great deal for a huge bag of them. Give each child 50 or so and get them to stack them one on top of the other.

Whoever builds the highest tower in a minute goes through to the next round. Two boys against each other and two girls until there is just one girl and one boy left. They can eat the sweets, of course.

You could put a target on the ground, say one of your heart-shaped cushions, give every child an uninflated sausage-shaped balloon and put his or her name on it. Then the children stand in a circle around the heart, say ten feet away, blow up their balloon and let them fly (without a knot in). The first one to land on the heart denotes the winner. Or the nearest to it. You could have one go each per round or they could fire at will until someone is the winner.

You could play Valentine’s Day bingo. This can become as elaborate as you have time for. You could create your own cards with hearts etc on them; if the children are young, you could call out pictures instead of numbers, but the funniest of all is if the caller makes up some Valentine’s Day slang to go with each number.

For example, when calling bingo numbers in Britain, it is common to say: ‘Legs 11′ and a lot of players will whistle; ‘two little ducks, 22′ and somebody always says ‘quack, quack’. Every number has its own saying and they are used with minor variations everywhere. You could make up your own like: ‘two hairy legs, number 11′ or ‘two beautiful legs, number 11′.

If you cannot think of something suitable for each number, only do as many as you can – they always get a laugh and that is what it is all about when you are organizing a St Valentine’s Day party for kids.

The U. S. Marine Corps Reserve has a sixty odd year old scheme to collect toys for tots from needy families both in the United States and in other countries. The aim is to save new unwrapped toys during October, November and December every year and then hand those toys out as Christmas presents to deprived children in the community in which the campaign is being conducted.

Their aim is to bring a message of hope to deprived children in order to encourage them to become ‘responsible, productive, patriotic citizens’ in the words of their website.

One of the main aims of Toys for Tots is to unite the communities where U.S Marine Reserve units are stationed for the three months of October, November and December each year in the gathering and distribution of new toys to children from less well-off families in order to help them experience the joys of Christmas.

One of the aspirations is that the memory of receiving these presents every year will encourage the kids to recognize the value of the communities where they live and take an active part in those communities when they become older.

Communities where there is no unit of U.S. marine Corps Reserves can also take part in the program but they should first register for authorization. These non-Marine organizations will usually, but not always, be ex-Marines.

These groups organize fund-raising events throughout the year in order to finance the purchase of new toys since donations of new toys do not always meet the groups’ needs. These fund-raising events could include sports days, golfing tournaments, bicycle races, swimming tournaments et cetera.

Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and handed out 5,000 toys for needy children in the local region.

The original idea sprang from Major Hendrick’s wife, Diane, who had made a doll for a disadvantaged child. She gave it to her husband to give to a fitting charity. When he could not find one, she recommended that he start one himself, so he did just that.

The following year Marine Corps Reserve units across the country adopted the program and it has been actively supplying toys to disadvantaged tots ever since. Walt Disney got involved from the very beginning by designing the logo that the Marine Reserve charity still uses today.

Other celebrities to become involved in the early days were Nat ‘King’ Cole, Peggy Lee and Vic Damone, who recorded the Toys for Tots theme, which was written especially for the charity by Sammy Fain and Paul Webster.

Many celebrities have been played a part during the years. Celebrities like Bob Hope, John Wayne, Doris Day, Lorrie Morgan, Tim Allen, Kenny Rogers and Billy Ray Cyrus. First Lady Nancy Reagan acted as the national Spokesperson in 1983 and First Lady Barbara Bush served as the national Spokesperson in 1992. She wrote in her autobiography tenderly of her involvement with Toys for Tots and called it one of her favourite charities.

Sleep apnea or sleep apnoea is the condition which causes sufferers to stop breathing frequently during sleep. These interruptions can last anything from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. There are three kinds of sleep apnea Central, Obstructive and Mixed or Complex Apnea. Obstructive apnea is by the most common form and it normally comes about in overweight, middle-aged men.

The most frequently recommended method of overcoming obstructive apnea is weight loss, but as this is not simple for most overweight people, the most usual remedy is CPAP, which involves the wearing of an oxygen mask.

The problem with sleep apnea is that the shortage of breath means that the blood and the brain are starved of oxygen. When the level of oxygen in the brain drops to a certain level, it wakes the body up to do something about it. However, the heart normally beats more slowly at night, giving it a rest, but as the oxygen level in the blood drops, the heart will pump harder to send more blood and oxygen to the areas it is most needed.

Another effect is that people suffer from fatigue during the day, which leads to falling asleep at the wheel and accidents at work. In fact, sufferers of apnea are three times more probable to have an accident than normal.

Sufferers of apnea hardly ever wake up when their brain gets them breathing again, but it can be very distressing for their partners. My wife thought that I had died when she first became aware of my difficulty with obstructive sleep apnea and the spluttering back to a state of breathing resembles a drowning man coming up for the second time.

Other problems that can occur after a night of poor sleep are those linked with tiredness: irritability, mood swings, bad concentration, headaches, excessive anxiety, depression, acid reflux, nocturnal sweating, loss of sex drive and elevated heart rate at night.

Most instances of obstructive apnea can be vastly improved by a loss in weight. In fact, a ten percent loss of weight can produce a twenty-five percent improvement in apnea. Moreover, anything that relaxes the muscles should be avoided – especially alcohol. Stopping smoking can help as well.

Mechanical means of improving the condition are raising the head, so that the weight on your neck hangs down towards the chest rather than pressing down on the windpipe. Sleeping on your side can help as well for the same reason.

Black African males and Indian (from India) males are almost twice as much at risk of suffering from apnea as Caucasians. Approximately 4% of Caucasian males and 2% of Caucasian females suffer from sleep apnea. A surprising statistic is that the same percentage of Chinese men and women suffer from apnea as Caucasians. This is startling because the Chinese are not normally as overweight as Caucasians.

The terms ‘apnea’ and ‘apnoea’ are synonymous; the former being the American spelling and the latter being the English spelling.

May 27th, 2011What Is Sleep Apnea?

I wouldn?t bother so much having my bed partner lie on the sofa in the living room snoring, as I would if he suffered from sleep apnea, a more severe and harmful disorder. This breathing disorder during sleep that is followed by interrupted and shallow breathing can be treated easily provided it is found out in time and not mistaken for normal snoring.

Hence it is best to understand what sleep apnea and its indications are, so we can help a loved one that is suffering from the disorder of sleep apnea.

You have to know that untreated sleep apnea could hinder you having sound sleep at night and make you feel tired, fatigued, mentally exhausted and least productive on the next day. The breathing pauses could last anywhere between 10 to 20 seconds, take place up to 100 times on the same night. This would reduce the quantity of the deep natural sleep that is necessary for the body to function properly physically and mentally during the daytime.

Most of us know the implications of not having a sound night?s sleep and this is no exception for a person with sleep apnea. He/she would suffer from chronic daytime sleepiness, loss of concentration and slow reflexes that could make one have higher risks for accidents.

In addition the long-term results of sleep apnea are serious health disorders like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and weight gain.

Watch out for indications of sleep apnea like loud and chronic snoring, choking, gasping, snorting in sleep and long interruptions in breathing. In addition observe if he/she feels tired and sleepy during the day even after protracted hours of sleep at night.

In addition, look out for dry mouth or sore throat on waking up, morning headaches, restiveness, insomnia, moodiness, irritability or even depression. Waking up feeling restive, forgetful, with a lack of concentration power and frequent trips to the bathroom at night could be other indications.

On noticing these indications consult a specialist. He/she will prescribe an overnight stay in a hospital to observe and diagnose sleep apnea. It is best to understand that just snoring or some of these indications does not lead to a diagnosis of sleep apnea.

Snoring could be just ordinary and it does not interfere with the quality and amount of sleep and make one feel chronically tired, sleepy or lack of concentration, all of which could lead to accidents. However the onus of diagnosing rests with the doctor.

It is a good idea to take into account that sleep apnea could be of various types. In an episode of obstructive sleep apnea, the soft tissues on the back of the throat relax and obstruct oxygen from entering the lungs during sleep and it results in a brief disturbance of sleep.

However, central sleep apnea is less well-known but more grave and takes place when the brain fails to signal the breath regulating muscles to breathe and this could make one conscious than one has woken up. The most serious of sleep apneas is the combination of both these apnea known as complex sleep apnea.

Believe me, sleep apnea could be readily discovered in the early stages with your bed partner?s help. A sleep diary would help him/her record your snoring, gasping, choking, or other unusual sounds. In addition a video recording of the patient would help you note signs of sleep apnea.

Lego sets have come a long way since my brothers and I had Lego sets in the UK. Lego UK is an off-shoot of the original Danish company known as Lego, however, Lego UK may just as well be considered a separate firm in its own right. Nowadays Lego sets are a lot more than only boxes of interlocking building blocks, Lego sets are themed now to make them more relevant to a child’s particular interests. Lego is seeing a resurgence.

The name ‘Lego’ is not a genuine word, not even in Danish. Rather it is an acronym of two Danish words “leg godt”, which mean “play well”. It is Lego Group’s name and part of the logo of the Lego Group.

The Lego Group was the brain child of Ole Kirk Kristiansen in 1932 and the Lego company has remained in the Kristiansen family’s hands until today. The current owner of the Lego Group is Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a grandchild of the company’s founder.

Lego’s mission statement is the same the whole Lego Group worldwide and that is to:

?Inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow?

Lego UK explains this by saying that their ultimate aim is ‘to inspire and develop children to think creatively, reason systematically and release their potential to shape their own future – experiencing the endless human possibility’.

The Lego Group now has over 130 subsidiaries and branches all over the world, one of which is Lego UK. From its unassuming beginnings in a small Danish carpentry workshop in Bilund, the Lego Group has evolved into the fifth largest toy manufacturer in the world, although it is still based in Bilund.

The fundamental building block of the Lego Group is the famous eight-stud Lego block, which has remained unchanged since 1958. In fact, it is unlikely to ever change since it has been calculated that there are over 900 million different methods of mixing just six of these blocks together.

More than 900 million different methods of combining just six Lego building blocks of one size and one colour! Think about the possibilities if you give a child a box of Lego building blocks of different sizes and colours.

Lego takes education very seriously and since the Seventies, the Lego Group has extended its product assortment to include younger and older people, The Duplo block is for pre-school children and are large enough for small hands to manipulate and too substantial to swallow.

For older children, teenagers and adults, there are electric motors that can be incorporated into models which can be controlled by computer. One well-known British TV presenter contacted Lego for help in constructing a house from Lego to live in.

In fact, this full-size, twenty foot tall, house was built by 1,000 volunteers using 3,300,000 bricks and everything is manufactured from Lego building blocks. Yes, everything, including a flushing toilet, a sink with taps, the cat and the bread bin.

Are you an anime toy collector or do you just comprehend how well-liked they are? Well, the fact is that because they are so well-liked with both children and collectors alike, some individuals are making a lovely living out of trading anime toys both on and off line. Making money from your hobby is both fun and pretty easy, if you know what you are doing. It is certainly possible for you to turn a profit from them too.

There are prerequisites to earning money from any hobby and trading in anime toys is no exception. You have to actually immerse yourself in the toys and know which ones are difficult to buy and which ones are the most well-liked with enthusiasts. You can acquire this knowledge by reading, yet to be truthful, if you do not already know it, you are probably not interested enough.

If you are not au fait with anime toys, try applying these principles to what you are interested in. Anyway, returning to anime. There are comics, books and films that you ought to be familiar with before you can have enough information to begin trading. You need to know the characters and also their personalities.

The easiest manner to begin is if you sell what you already have. If you have looked after them, they could be worth quite a lot of money otherwise they will attract a reduced price. This is not necessarily a difficulty. Sell all your old tat and use that money to buy the most popular examples of anime toys that you can afford, but buy it ‘as new’ and boxed in its original carton.

The top collectors will only buy ‘new unused’ in its original packaging, so this is the level that you have to aim for. Anything that is second best, unless it is very rare is a waste of time and is only good enough for children to play with. Real collectors just invest in the best – think of coins and stamps.

By selling off your old anime toys, you can achieve a couple of objectives: you will be ‘clearing the decks’ but also furnishing yourself with start-up capital. Frequently, it is a lack of start up capital that stops people from ‘having a go’. If it does not cost you anything other than your old toys, which I am sure you will have already grown out of, if you are thinking about dealing in them, you will not be speculating with your own money really.

The way to start is to sell your old stuff in order to acquire start up capital and then use your specialist knowledge to purchase anime toys that are only in the very best state. Then you work your way up the ladder until you are buying ang selling off line locally or further afield at toy fayres but also on line, say on eBay, in only the very best examples of anime toys. Stick with it and you can make money, if you are passionate about your subject.

May 15th, 2011Fund Raising For Schools

Many schools have to take part in fund raising because of a shortfall in government funding. This shortage of sufficient government funding will just get worse given the cutbacks that the governments of the world have seen fit to impose in order to help resolve the financial crisis brought about by the collapse of so many financial institutions.

It is commonly called the banking crisis and it is being used as an excuse for cutting the funding of government departments like schooling and health care. You will get able to judge how hard your local schools have been hit by the amount of school fund raising in your region.

A conventional method of school fund raising is the selling of goods from a catalogue from door to door. Typically, school children are given the catalogues to take home and to take around their neighbours. Those who sell the most often win prizes.

The season of school fund raising mostly starts when the kids go back to school in the autumn after the summer break. If the schools in your area have been badly hit by the cutbacks, you may have dozens of kids knocking on your door attempting to sell you over-priced knick-knacks.

However, some schools endeavor to be more imaginative in their fund raising, because fewer and fewer people are prepared to pay way over the top for emergency plugs, wrapping paper and scissors.

Some of these inventive ideas include selling sandwiches, pizzas, hot dogs, barbecued chicken and cookie dough. Other ways are to hold a bring and buy sale or a fayre with sideshows, stalls, bingo and a bouncy house. Raffles are also popular ways of raising money for schools as long as the prizes are worth winning.

Although school fund raising is a nuisance for parents, it is a necessary evil, if the school is to meet its responsibility to provide children with a decent education. One good method of increasing money is to publish a monthly school magazine. Kids and teachers can write pieces and stories for the magazine and a board of students and teachers can edit and compile it.

It is a good idea if the head teacher gives a report in every magazine. Local companies can be approached to buy advertising space and the magazine can be sold for a small amount. This will provide a regular and pretty stable monthly income and each parent will want one as will other individuals who live in the locality of the school.

The difficulty of underfunding is a big one and it will not be going away any time soon, however, families are suffering from the financial squeeze as well so schools ought to shift their focus while trying to raise money. People definitely do not like to feel obliged to purchase over-priced rubbish because it is children who are flogging it – it is a form of moral blackmail.

The best way to raise money for schools is to supply value for money. So, if you have to organize school fund increasing, give out catalogues by all means, but create them good ones or create your own in conjunction with a large, local department store; put on a Christmas pantomime, nativity play or and carol service; in the warmer months organize public activities like bazaars, fayres and bring and purchase sales and publish a monthly school magazine.

One of the greatest things about visiting San Francisco is the being near to some fantastic attractions. You can lodge in one city yet visit several. You get not only the conveniences of the city, but the beauty of nature is not far away from almost any spot within the city. In fact, a short train ride will take you quickly to some nearby attractions that are definitely worth checking out.

One of the first train trips I want to talk about is not only a train trip but a bus and train tour. This tour goes from San Francisco to Yosemite Park. This excursion requires transfers back and forth from bus to train but offers some stunning scenery and the ability to get pleasure from it without the anxiety of driving, rest stops and the need to stretch your legs.

Sometimes a little inconvenience is worth a lot more convenience later in your excursion. The train portion of the tour lasts about three hours and you get to spend three hours in Yosemite. For some it is not worth the hassle and for others it is just what the doctor ordered – time to rest and relax while on the way. This is by far the most complicated of the train tours heading out of San Francisco.

The second trip is to wine country. The advantage of these tours is in the fact that you can enjoy your wine tasting event without the anxiety of who is going to drive. Everyone in your party can enjoy the outing equally. Even more than that however, is that many tour groups have made the train ride itself more the event than the wine tasting.

With pastimes such as four course meals and Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre for your enjoyment it is no surprise that this has become an event of choice for many excursionists to San Francisco. Although this may be a more than moderately expensive alternative, it is well worth the cost. You can always cut costs somewhere else in San Francisco to make up for the expense.

Roaring Camp Railroads provides two train rides that are both equally appealing in hugely different ways. The first is a excursion back in time. This is almost certainly my favorite. On this excursion you travel to the summit of Bear Mountain while listening to tales about Roaring Camp’s history. This train trip lasts for an hour and is great fun, particularly for the little ones.

The second event by Roaring Camp Railroads is the Beach Train, which will transfer you to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. The round trip from Roaring Camp to Santa Cruz and back is about three hours and well worth every penny if you have a budding engineer among your children.

Perhaps the most magical of train excursions is the Christmas Train trip from Oakdale. This trip includes Santa, his elves and a little Christmas magic. What more could you ask for? Well, I guess that that depends on whether you made the naughty list or the nice list. This train ride is magic for everyone that joins it, young and old alike will enjoy the magic that only Christmas can bring.

Whether you are a big kid, a little kid, or somewhere in between, I am ready to wager that the magic of a train ride has not been totally lost over the years. In fact, I am willing to bet that if you allow yourself to sit back and just enjoy yourself, you will enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

Before you can buy contact lenses, or specs either for that matter, you will have to submit yourself to an eye test. However, the eye test for contact lenses is a bit more detailed than a test for regular specs, so you ought to tell the optometrist which type of lens you prefer before the test begins in order to save time.

An eye test will normally start with a physical examination of your eyes for signs of eye disease such as cataracts and glaucoma or general problems such as high blood pressure or diabetes. This is why it is so important to have an eye test at least every two years, because a physician does not give routine checks for cataracts, diabetes or glaucoma, the three of which can turn you blind.

Your optometrist might ask other questions as well such as why you would prefer to have contact lenses rather than glasses and whether you have had any trouble with your eyes. The decision to wear contact lenses or specs is entirely yours, although in some countries specs might be free whereas there may be a charge for contact lenses because they are more expensive.

The results of the optometrist’s test will yield a set of numbers which will tell an optician the strength of the lens required for each eye as the lens required for each eye is usually different. This is commonly referred to as your prescription. Then you take this prescription to an optician to pick your spectacle frames, if you are having spectacles, and to have your lenses made or and installed.

In the case of specs, lenses will either have to be cut or and adjusted for the frames that you want and in the case of contact lenses, you might have to have the lenses manufactured. In either case, you might be lucky enough to walk out of the shop wearing your glasses or contacts or you may have to return in a few hours or even a couple days. No optician worth his salt will sell you expensive lenses without a prescription.

There is an clear important difference between spectacles and contact lenses – contacts have to come into contact with your eyeballs and not all eyeballs are exactly the same shape. Therefore, if you want contacts, the optometrist will have to measure the exact curvature or the exact contours of your eyes and this will be part of your prescription. Some eyes are naturally drier than others and this can affect the type of contact lenses that you ought to purchase.

Your optician will then often give you a pair of trial contact lenses and ask you to return a few days later for further tests. You may have to wear a number of types of contacts before you find a kind or make that suits your particular eyes and sight.

Once you have contacts that seem to suit, you will have to follow the directions and advice that comes with them and return for your check-ups when you are asked to. These follow-ups are important to ensure that the contact lenses are not aggravating your eyes or causing more significant issues.

People connect sleep apnea with overweight adults, mostly men, and this profile does tie in with most sufferers, but in fact everybody stops breathing at some time whilst they are asleep. Not each night as with sufferers of sleep apnea, but every now and then.

Even babies may stop breathing sometimes. This can be a terrifying experience for parents and carers. If you are worried about your baby suffering from apnea, you could get one of the baby sleep apnea monitors.

There are three forms of apnea, which means ‘without wind’ and comes from Greek: central, obstructive and mixed or complex apnea. Obstructive apnea is by far the most common kind and it is also the explanation why babies get apnea most of the time too.

Although a small amount of apnea sometimes is fairly normal, constant apnea could be a sign that something is wrong medically. Two of the causes in babies could be enlarged adenoids or tonsils, which could have significant consequences.

It is difficult to tell what is going on with babies at the best of times, but when a baby is suffering from apnea, you may become aware of snoring, breathlessness, colouration and restiveness.

Obstructive apnea usually just occurs during sleep when muscles are relaxed, however, central apnea can occur at any time of the day or night. Central apnea is caused by a section of the brain that controls breathing not working properly. This sort of apnea is more common in premature babies.

Mixed or complex apnea is a mixture of the other two types and is also pretty common in children.

Your physician, the nurse or the midwife will check for apnea and may suggest that you buy one of the various baby sleep apnea monitors. One of the problems with these baby monitors is that none of them is entirely dependable to detect the cessation of breathing. Therefore, the better baby monitors will have a heart beat detector as a back-up.

The monitor must also be able to activate an alarm outside the room where the baby is, so that the parent or carer can walk around the house without having to worry about checking up on the baby regularly

These remote alarms are usually wireless these days and they might also have a vibration alert. This is a very useful role. The last thought is the power source. Batteries alone are not really good enough.

The best types are rechargeable. That is, they work like a mobile phone. This means that the sensor can be attached to the crib and the baby wherever it is, even when there is no local power source.

Sleep Apnea, if you have this health difficulty, then you already know the indications and how it affects your everyday life. If, on the other hand, you have just heard of sleep apnea, but do not know what it is, let me share with you what the symptoms are and how you can treat this sleeping problem at home.

When someone is not able to sleep without interruption at night, this can be irritating and frightening. Breathing is what everyone does, day in and day out. If an individual is sleeping, and they halt their normal routine of breathing, this is known as sleep apnea. Newborns, at times, forget to breathe and they as well have bouts of sleep apnea.

That is why it is vital for a nurse or parent to watch their newborn when sleeping. Not being able to breathe while sleeping, whether a newborn or adult, will cut off oxygen to the brain and may cause irreversible harm. Even if breathing only stops for ten or more seconds.

There are various methods to recognize sleep apnea in an individual. One method is how an individual sleeps at night or if they have the need to sleep in the daytime. As it turns out, snoring is a form of apnea and if all you want to do is sleep during the daytime, this is a cause for apprehension because somehow oxygen is being cut off from the brain.

Along with these two obvious symptoms, an individual wakes up with headaches which never happened before, not being able to remember the simplest of things, along with concentrating at work or play.

If you think apnea is something you are struggling with, it is necessary to see a GP straight away. This is not the easiest health problem to pinpoint.

Being healthy is everybody?s aim and since breathing is something carried out daily, without thinking of it, the moment breathing is disrupted is the time to get in touch with your GP.

When you see your medical doctor, they ought to be asking you about the indications above, along with asking if you are experiencing depression and mood swings. Now, your medical doctor might prescribe such things as sleeping on your side, instead of your back and taking various decongestants.

These are methods to stop sleep apnea for those with a mild case. On the other hand, if the apnea is more severe, a sleeping mask will be something to think about using in order to keep oxygen flowing to the brain.

One thing a person suffering from sleep apnea should not do is take sleeping tablets. Sleeping tablets will cause even more breathing issues. Although, taking homeopathic supplements or burning an aromatherapy scent in your home will allow you to relax and make it easier for a person to sleep at night. These are called non prescriptive ways to cure sleep apnea or at least relax.

Just remember that the symptoms above are serious and if they are something you are feeling, please get in touch with your physician. These indications are not to be taken lightly.

Finally, if you are smoking, this too you ought to stop. There is a connection between sleep apnea and smoking as inhaling smoke is not the best thing for the respiratory system.

A surfeit of stress can result in all sorts of problems both mental and physical. The mental problems that can arise from stress include anxiety attacks, although there can be other reasons for anxiety attacks as well. Furthermore, it appears that the tendency of anxiety attacks is on the up. This is perhaps because of the increased levels of stress that everyone experiences.

You just cannot avoid tales of misery and strife in the newspapers and on the TV. It seems that news casters take pleasure in in telling us how much trouble we are in from all sorts of things from terrorists to diabetes.

They also never tire of warning us of the risks from paedophiles, rapists and murderers. It is no surprise that everybody is stressed or that some people have turned this stress into anxiety and anxiety attacks or panic attacks.

These attacks are characterized by a sudden sensation of panic for no reason at all or unjustifiable anxiety. These anxiety attacks are very distressing for those who suffer from them regularly.

There are lots of prescription drugs available, but these days many people try to do without drugs, preferring more natural remedies. One fact that many sufferers comment on, is that they feel much worse if they have a hangover.

Not that they have anxiety attacks while they are drinking, but that they get an increased number the following day, if they have a hangover. It follows then, that you may be able to lessen the frequency and the harshness of your panic attacks, if you do not drink too much.

In this vein, sufferers have also noticed that they get more frequent and more severe attacks of anxiety if they are tired or worn out. Getting a good night’s sleep will clearly help, if this is one of the causes of your panic or anxiety attacks.

On the dietary front, vitamin B12 has been cited as having a advantageous effect on sufferers. The vitamin B group help the brain to produce serotonin, which is the body’s happy drug. A lack of seratonin can create depression. Therefore, ensure that you get your daily recommended amount (RDA) of vitamins in the B group, especially vitamin B12. B12 is readily available in natural foods, it is even in cornflakes, just make sure that you are in receipt of enough.

Many people have had large amounts of success by restricting their intake of sweeteners too. This includes natural sugar, as well as artificial sweeteners like saccharin. In order to obtain the largest benefit you should try to monitor your mental response to sweeteners. Some may be perfectly OK for you while others may not.

Caffeine has also been linked with anxiety, so it might be worth attempting to do without ordinary tea, coffee and coke, to see if that makes a difference. You could try decaf, if you miss the taste of coffee or herbal teas.

Another proposed home remedy that has given great benefits is physical activity. If you sense an attack coming on, try to ‘take your mind off it’ by distracting yourself. A simple walk might be enough or a chat with someone.

Buddhism was started by the adherents of Siddhartha Gautama (circa 563-483 BC). He was born into a Hindu family of the kshatriya caste in what is now called Nepal. At the age of 29, he left his wife and infant son and went in search of enlightenment.

He achieved enlightenment some time later while sitting under a bodhi tree near Patna. After 49 days of rapture and resisting temptations (Mara), He, now known as Buddha, formed an order of monks and went forth to teach the word. After 45 years of teaching their philosophy of enlightenment Buddha died and reached Nirvana, the state in which ‘ideas and consciousness cease to exist’.

One of the most central concepts to Buddhists is the Tipitaka (the ‘Three Baskets’), which is a record of the Buddha’s doctrines as set down by His early followers after his death. The writings in these ‘three baskets’ tell the story of Buddha’s life (Buddha); record his laws (Dharma); and his guidelines for setting up and maintaining a monastic order (Sangha).

Buddhists believe in reincarnation and the wheel of life in a similar manner to Hindus. They also believe that this cycle of life, death and rebirth can be broken by achieving enlightenment. Enlightenment can be achieved by adherence to the Four Noble Truths.

Life is impermanent despite the cycle of life, death and rebirth and can only create suffering (dukka) because of the pursuit of mortal desires. Suffering and desire can just be conquered by achieving Nirvana, which can be achieved by following the Eightfold Path, otherwise known as the ‘Middle Way’.

The Middle Way consists of: right belief, thought, speech, action, livelihood, work, mindfulness and concentration. These make up the nucleus of Buddhist ethics.

A hallmark of Buddhism is the monastic order. Men can become monks for a few years or for life. There is also a female monastic order. In some sects, boys go into a monastery for a period of between a couple of weeks and a couple of months as part of their passage into adulthood. Boys in Thailand are expected to be monks for a number of weeks before they eventually get married.

Monks live an ascetic life in monasteries or temples. Each village has a temple in much the same way as western villages have a church, but each temple tries to uphold a population of at least nine monks, which is considered the ideal number for some of their duties like blessing a house or performing a wedding ceremony.

Buddhist monks live on alms given by the local villagers. In Thailand the young monks walk the streets in the early morning collecting donations of food, which has to be consumed before midday, after which they may not eat. Monks are not permitted any contact with women at all. They may not even sit next to them on a bus or give the fare to a female bus conductress.

Buddhist temples are primarily for personal contemplation and meditation. They are open to anyone twenty-four hours a day and people use them to gain respite from the hustle and bustle of every day life. Group prayer meetings are far less common a trait of Buddhism than they are in Judaism, Christianity, Islam or even Hinduism.

A PDA is a personal digital assistant, but is also called a palmtop computer. They were first brought out by Apple in 1992, but they have come a long way since then. At first they were little more than electronic organizers. Later a browser was added and then wi-fi potential. Nowadays, a lot of them have the ability to play MP3 files too.

The MP3 files are usually replayed through a player like Windows Media Player, which might be part of the suite of applications that came with Internet Explorer. The playing of music files when you are working, or multi-tasking, may slow the PDA down, but that actually depends on the speed of your PDA’s Central Processing Unit (CPU) and the amount of random access memory (RAM) it has available.

These are restrictions that apply to all other types of computer as well. Storage of your MP3 tracks is achieved normally by the use of a flash memory card. You download the music to the card and then gain access to that folder and its tracks from the PDA’s screen. The MP3 files are called from the flash card into RAM and played as they would be on any other computer.

You can listen to the music through the built-in stereo speakers, but they are usually pretty tinny, you can connect headphones or you could attach mini external speakers, which give a astonishingly realistic sound, as do the headphones. In headphone mode they behave likewise to a Walkman.

If you are familiar with Windows on a laptop or desktop, you will recognize Windows Media Player (WMP). It is very adaptable and will play back most forms of audio and visual media. If you have WMP on screen whilst you are listening to music and the PDA can get on line, it will automatically download interesting details about that track from the Net, if you have set that alternative in the Options Menu.

Most PDA’s are Touch-Screen, so tapping the screen ceases the music and retapping it fires it up again. If you consider that your PDA is too slow or if you have lots of music on your desktop computer, you could load that music onto your flashcard and plug it into your PDA instead.

WMP is a very helpful tool. It will allow you to organize and categorize all your music files and keep them in lists called libraries or Play Lists. You have complete freedom to organize these play lists as you see fit: say, by music type, by artist, by album, by date, by genre or by country or by all of them. These lists can then be played one after the other or at random or just searched for as individual tracks.

Not so long ago, it was not at all uncommon to see blind people walking the streets tap-tapping away with their white sticks, being guided by a dog, normally a Labrador, but I have not seen anyone like that in Britain for years, as far as I recall.

That has to be a decent thing; it must mean that we are beginning to cure or at least alleviate most forms of blindness.

My aunty had cataracts for years when I was a kid in the Sixties – it was simply one of those things. Some individuals got them when they were old and others did not.

My brother’s mother-in-law had cataracts in the late Nineties and she was enrolled on a two year waiting, but at least she had hope and they were going to be removed free of charge.

I do not know of anyone else that has eye trouble except myself. I could not get my glasses clean one day and then a friend said he saw a white dot in one eye. He took me to the hospital and the optician diagnosed ‘premature senile cataracts’.

Well, I live in Thailand now and he did not use those exact words. He told me that the cataracts were because I was prematurely senile.

I asked him if that was what he really intended; he looked it up in a book and we both had a hearty laugh about it, although he never actually corrected himself. My condition turned out to be a little bit more serious than just cataracts, but when I went from the local hospital to a major hospital in Pattaya, the surgeon saw me within 30 minutes and asked me if I wanted them removed.

I said that I did and she was willing to do the operation there and then. I got it postponed by 24 hours, but she would have sorted my eye out that day in a 30 minute operation, which does not need anaesthetic. I think that that was marvelous.

We have come a long way from routinely seeing blind individuals on the street and putting up with cataracts through a two-year waiting list to instant removal of cataracts by laser surgery in 40-50 years.

At least we have in the Developed World and in the East too, if you have the money. There are still millions of people in Asia and particularly in Africa suffering blindness and partial blindness for the sake of an easy 30 minute operation.

Two weeks after my surgery, my other eye began to cloud over. It was as if it had been holding on with its last scrap of strength until I got his mate sorted out. I had that one done last year and once I was allowed to take off my patch and look around me with two good eyes again for the first time in a decade, I could not believe that I had forgotten how bright the world actually is and that I had not noticed how dingy my world had gotten.

If you are worried about an eye operation, do not be. What you will experience when you can see properly again will make all the worry seem ludicrous and if you get the opportunity to give someone their eyesight back, please do it.

When it becomes hot, most people head out the door. A lot go to a public pool, a river, lake or the beach, but others would prefer to remain in their own backyard. Some individuals are lucky enough to have a pool in their back yard, but not everyone has the space or the money. However, the majority of individuals like being wet in order to cool down.

In this article, we will look at some of the things that you do can in the backyard involving water to help you remain cool. The first one is the one we have already touched on and the one home improvement that almost everybody would have if they could. A pool. Individuals love the thought of having a garden pool.

If your budget cannot stretch to a substantial in ground pool, you could buy a smaller above-ground pool. These above-ground pools are a lot cheaper, and while not large enough to swim in, they can certainly get thought of as large plunge pools. Half a dozen people can have a lot of fun in one of these pools.

If this is not feasible, what about a Jacuzzi or a hot tub? There is a great deal of flexibility in hot tubs these days. You can have them built into all types of nooks and crannies in the garden.

You can also get a hot tub of any size you like: two, foru, six, eight individuals and everyone with a moulded seat with its own hydrotherapeutic directional water jets, so that you can play the jets on any parts of your body that you want.

If this is out of the question as well, what of a few garden water sprinklers? You could have plastic waterproof garden furniture and sit under the sprinklers simulating rain. This is an easy and very cheap way of cooling off when it is very warm.

You could get everyone in your garden a water pistol to squirt each other with. This may sound a little juvenile but kids and a lot of adults really enjoy it. Similar to this, you could fill a couple of dozen balloons up with water and use them for throwing at each other like having your own paint ball competition without getting dirty.

Water games are immense fun and a good manner of keeping cool whilst the sun is beating down in the summer. Just one word of warning – sunburn. Water will cool you down and you may not notice that you are burning. Be certain that everybody applies waterproof suntan lotion of a factor that is applicable to the degree of sunshine in your area.

The patient of Lasik surgery has two foremost responsibilities regarding his or her eyes: firstly to pick a responsible, skilled surgeon, which should not be very difficult and secondly, to take care of his eyes after the operation by following the guidance of the surgeon on post-operative care. This second part is very important and should not be taken lightly.

The post-operative supervision process is not a problem, but if you are worried about it, you could enquire of your surgeon what it will entail before the operation. The physician or a nurse will be able to explain the procedure of supervision to you in detail or they will give you a pamphlet.

There may be some peculiar sight aberrations for a couple of days after the operation, some of which are fairly normal. One of the most common aberrations that are standard for a couple of days are halos around lights.

However, you should be certain that you understand the difference between what is standard and so no grounds for concern and what should be reported immediately

There are different Lasik procedures and the procedures are advancing all the time so it is not possible to give precise details in this article. Moreover, the shape of the eyes and the causes for deteriorating eyesight are individual to each patient.

Some of the advice that your Lasik surgeon may give for your post-operative eye care may include the following, although different doctors might have their own advice.

The first thing is to bear in mind that you have just had an operation including anaesthetic. There may not have been any blood but it was surgery all the same.

All patients are desired to rest after an operation and you will be no exception. If you had had an operation on your knee, you would use it as little as you could for a time and the same is good advice for your eye.

Attempt to sleep for a couple of hours after the operation or at least close your eyes and rest. Infection is the chief concern, so do not poke or rub your eye and do not strain it by trying out your recently improved vision by reading or watching TV.

If you have to entertain yourself in this way wear an eye patch. Your surgeon will almost certainly have given you a stiff plastic eye guard, which you should wear at all times.

Some surgeons will advise against getting water into your eye for a few days, which means washing just from the neck down, no showering, no going out in the rain and definitely no swimming.

Be careful with bright light, it cannot damage your eye but it does hurt. Your world will get much brighter after the operation and looking at a light bulb can become painful. Be cautious of watching moving traffic when the sun is shining, a car window can catch the sun and reflect it back into your eye unexpectedly.

You will be given eye drops so do not fail to use them. Lasik surgery can dry your eyes out, if this happens they might be able to give you substitute or extra drops.

When I was about forty years of age, I could feel that I would soon require specs. I worked long hours in an office at a computer and most of my friends reasoned that this was the cause of my diminishing eyesight. I merely put the spectacles on like everyone else does and got on with it.

However, ten years later, my eyesight took an abrupt turn for the worse and I was diagnosed with premature senile cataracts, at least that is how they translated it into English from the Thai as I had by now married a Thai lady and moved to her village in rural northern Thailand. I went to a very good hospital in Pattaya known as the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital and one of their senior eye surgeons examined me.

She confirmed the diagnosis and added that it was likely that the other eye would develop a cataract at some time in the future although there was no indication of it at that moment. The next day she carried out an operation to take out the lens from my eye and replace it with a plastic one.

The operation is quite painless although it can become a bit scary and lasts between thirty and sixty minutes. Mine was ‘a long one’, said the surgeon at forty minutes. After an hour’s recovery, a nurse showed my wife and me how to care for my eye and I was permitted to go. My eye was taped up, so I could not see out of it until that evening when my wife put the drops in.

Everything was so vivid and clear. It was truly amazing. I had to keep going back for post-operative care for four weeks and then we went back to the village. I cannot convey how fantastic it was to be able to see clearly again without glasses after what I realized was over a decade.

The eye or the brain or both take a a little time to adjust to the new lens and your eyesight improves for a period of time which can be from six to twenty-four months. Within six months, my other eye began to pack up. It had borne the strain of two eyes for long enough and now that there was a working replacement, it decided to quit fighting the impending cataract and gave up.

I was not back to square one because my plastic eye was far better that the other one had been in comparable circumstances. So, about six months later, I went back to Pattaya to get the other one done. The operation was the same with the same surgeon. I went back the next day for the check up, but it was a long wait for my turn and the time came around for my drops. My wife put them in but as I removed my protective eye-covering, I noticed the English-language newspaper on the table in front of me.

That was not unusual, but what was really unusual was that I could read it – without specs for the first time in fifteen years! I could see the look of revulsion on my fellow patients’ faces as they looked into my eye so I put the covering back on. (After the operation the eye swells up and it as black as an eight-ball with a blood-red dot in the middle – it is very frightening).

When I went in to see the surgeon and told her about the newspaper, she smiled. “Yes”, she said, “that was my surprise, I put a long-distance lens in last time and a reading lens in this time. Your brain will decide what you are looking at and use the correct eye”.

She had not told me because a small percentage of brains cannot accomplish this trick, which is why some people cannot take to variofocals too.

That was a year ago and both plastic eyes and brain have ‘bedded in’ nicely. I can read a book and drive a car without specs and my world is so brilliant. I still wonder at the brightness everyday. I had not noticed the light getting gradually dimmer for fifteen years.

Smoking cigarettes used to be a great deal more widespread than it is today. Now most smokers are looking for ways of stopping smoking. This is because smokers and the general public at large are more aware of the risks of smoking cigarettes nowadays.

Just look at films manufactured in the Sixties and before, everyone is smoking. It shows how common smoking was compared with today. This would not be possible now as you may not smoke in public places, on public transport, in restaurants or in bars any more in most Western countries and elsewhere too.

The difficulty with smoking is that not just the smoker suffers, so does everyone around about the smoker. This is called passive smoking and it affects those working or living with smokers – a barmaid or a spouse for example. So, all these individuals are endangering their health so that tobacco firms can become richer.

No matter how long someone has been smoking, it is possible to stop the habit. Anyone who has stopped smoking will tell you that stopping smoking cigarettes is all to do with the mind. You really have to want to stop smoking or you will not do it successfully.

Individuals have different ways of stopping smoking cigarettes. Some say that nicotine patches or nicotine gum help, because you can wean yourself off nicotine slowly without having to inhale the poisonous smoke of cigarettes. Nicotine is highly addictive and most of the chemical withdrawal symptoms have to do with the shortage of nicotine in the body.

Most people find that the only effective way of stopping smoking cigarettes is to quit smoking dead – in one go. It is very hard to cut down or to swap to a weaker brand. You are still inhaling poisonous smoke. It is still no good to you or anyone around you.

Cutting down or switching brands is not effective, because you will still smoke other smokers’ and you will still be in a smokers’ environment. You will also find yourself smoking tomorrow’s five cigarettes today, promising not to smoke any the next day. That never works. You have to quit smoking dead.

There are several situations that can provide the motivation to give up smoking cigarettes. Illness is usually high on the list. A few years ago two friends of mine who smoked heavily stopped smoking cigarettes within weeks of every other.

One was in his sixties and had smoked for almost sixty years: he was told that his lungs were beginning to go, but that if he stopped smoking, the shock might kill him. He quit smoking one morning and survived, but what a dilemma!

The other was in his fifties and drove a lot as a travelling salesman. The physician told him that he would almost certainly have to have a leg removed next year, if he did not give up smoking and that the other may go a year or so after that. He stopped smoking instantly and still has both legs.

So it seems that the trick to stopping smoking cigarettes successfully is to find your motivation (do you want to live long enough to see the grandchildren married?) and bear that image in front of you at all times. Take nicotine substitutes if you have to and stay away from environments where individuals smoke more, like pubs.Join a sports club instead, something like tennis, table tennis, swimming or even chess.

We all know that having a cold can give you sleepless nights, but there are other more significant illnesses that can result in sleeplessness too. However, it is not only the illnesses themselves but the medications too can cause restless nights. Some of the most common diseases that can result in an interruption of sleep are: arthritis, kidney disease, mental illness, acid reflux, diabetes, thyroid issues and neurological disorders.

Some kinds of heart disease can also have an effect on sleep patterns. For example congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease. These concerns will naturally put the patient under pretty strict medical care.

Sufferers of the two heart diseases listed above run a high risk of developing obstructive sleep apnoea. Obstructive sleep apnoea is a less significant disease than any heart disease, but it can have serious consequences too, including elevated blood pressure, which makes it difficult if it is not treated.

The problem with obstructive sleep apnoea is that sufferers are normally the last to know about it, because it does not really cause the sufferer any distress although it can still have dire consequences.

The only real remedy for obstructive sleep apnoea is either the loss of weight which is not simple for heart patients or the wearing of an oxygen mask at night, which is known as CPAP.

Diabetes can result in Restless Leg Syndrome, which involves the involuntary thrashing around of the legs during sleep. This leads to a very restless night for both the sufferer and the partner as the kicks can get quite violent – certainly enough to kick a football. Thyroid issues can lead to nocturnal sweating which can make the sufferer feel hot, damp and unpleasant

Neurological disorders like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s epilepsy and strokes can make the sufferer have problems with REM sleep and insomnia. People who have had a stroke may also suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea.

Sufferers of asthma and other respiratory illnesses will have concerns sleeping. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease will result in insomnia and sleep fragmentation.

Mental health issues such as depression, SAD’s and anxiety also lead to sleep disorders – usually also those of sleep fragmentation and insomnia.

GERD and acid reflux result in a burning sensation in the abdomen when the sufferer lies down, making it very difficult to sleep during an attack. There are tablets for this that are occasionally effective and raising the head a couple of inches can help too.

Kidney disease can also cause restless leg syndrome and people with arthritis have difficulty getting to sleep because of the pain.

The point about all these causes of a restless night is that it is the underlying cause that is more serious than the consequence – that is, the sleeplessness. These are serious conditions, some of which can be cured. Once the main illness is solved the secondary one will disappear as well.

All women and a increasing number of men would like shiny hair. This is because shiny hair is perceived as belonging to a healthy, vivacious person. The fact is that as we age, men’s hair falls out and women’s hair becomes more lifeless. So how can you get age-defying hair?

There are a few tricks of the trade, some of which are pretty obvious when you give them a bit of consideration. The first and most vital tip is not to over wash your hair. Your head produces oil to protect your hair and it does that because it thinks that hair is vital to help it regulate the temperature of the brain.

OK, these days we can put a hat on or erect a parasol, but it takes the body a long time to change. The point is to not wash all the oil from your hair too often. You want to wash the dirt off your hair but not all the oil.

Consequently, rub the shampoo into your scalp and not into your hair. As the shampoo runs off your hair it will take the dirt off your hair with it but only some of the oil. This makes a huge difference.

The tip above is the most important bit of advice because it applies to whichever shampoo you buy, but the next tip applies to what shampoo to purchase. Do not skimp on shampoo if you would like lovely-looking hair.

Do you remember the days when you had to wash your hair, rinse it and then apply conditioner and then rinse again? Well those really were the good old days as far as hair is concerned. These all-in-ones clean on the principle that the conditioner will not work in the presence of oil and the shampoo will not work if there is no oil.

This means that on the first wash, half the shampoo is wasted, but the shampoo has to scour your hair for the second wash (conditioner) to work. On the second wash the conditioner does its job, but the shampoo half goes down the drain having done nothing.

In other words, your cheap bottle of shampoo with conditioner costs two times as much as you paid for it, so why not buy different shampoo and conditioner in the first instance?

The combined shampoo and conditioner is a con because it makes you think that you are saving time and thereby getting something for nothing. You are not.

The best advice you can get for your hair is to purchase a mild shampoo without conditioner. By all means buy one that says that it is better suited to your type of hair if you like. Then do some research on your hair type and natural colour on the Net and make your own conditioner or purchase one.

Individuals used to use vinegar, beer, dandelions and all kinds of items and one that I have recently come across is Butterfly Pea. Do not become guiled by adverts and time saving if you really like your hair

The children of the so-called Baby Boomer generation, those born in the twelve years or so after the Second World War, are now grandparents and one of the tasks of being a grandparent is to dote on one’s grandchildren. Baby boomers belong to the richest generation that the West has ever seen and that is a good thing, because all this doting is quite expensive.

Baby boomers were fortunate because their parents outlived the worst war the world has ever seen and their parents knew unparalleled wealth as the world rebuilt itself after the devastation of the war. Needless to say a lot of the wealth that baby boomers’ parents were earning was spent on their children, giving them what they had never had themselves.

This meant that a great deal of baby boomers had way too much: rocking horses, dolls’ prams, toy forts, train sets, dolls’ houses, you name it. Nothing was too much for the generation of hope from the generation who had had nothing.

Now, fifty odd years later, those baby boomers are grandparents. But not just grandparents – the wealthiest generation of grandparents that the world has ever seen and the way things are going, the wealthiest generation of grandparents that the world will see for a generation or two to come as the Western world struggles to pay off the mountains of debt that the banking crisis cost us.

Nevertheless, money has a way of burning holes in pockets and grandparents like to dote and spoil their grand kids, so grandchildren, especially young grandchildren are being given the type of presents by their grandparents that the grandparents enjoyed themselves: rocking horses, dolls’ prams, toy forts et cetera are making a come-back big time.

The generation in between missed out, in general, on these old fashioned toys, but look on Amazon or eBay and see what is most popular now – it is modern versions of the old stuff, traditional toys. One of the reasons why traditional toys are so popular is because they are timeless.

Yes, a computer is a great present – it is both a games machine and it can be educational, but it will be too slow to run next year’s games, whereas kids will play with a rocking horse for ten years and then it can be handed on.

However, boomer grandparents were not just brought up on traditional toys, the Fifties and Sixties also saw a huge boost in science – nuclear science and the journey into space fascinated most people. Yes, it was a time of uncertainty and distrust as well because or the Arms Race with the Soviet Bloc, but that was not what most individuals talked about.

Music and science were the buzz of the day. Flower power, hippies and a contemporary, clean, bright way of life powered by new technology. Educational toys were popular presents: Lego, Meccano and chemistry sets.

Toys of this type are becoming popular as baby boomer grandparent gifts too. Lego sells one Lego set each and every seven seconds of every day of every year, day and night! This is a new trend, or at least, it is a revived trend and definitely a step in the right direction. Baby boomers may not have been the best parents, but they make fairly good grandparents.

Sleepwalking or somnambulance is a strange sleep disorder that affects up to fourteen percent of children at some time before they are teenagers. About a quarter of them will experience more than one bout of sleepwalking. For some reason, more boys than girls sleepwalk but most somnambulists grow out of the problem before they become teenagers.

Sleepwalking is in fact a brain disorder as well as a sleep disorder, but it is a brain disorder of the nervous system which normally corrects itself as the sufferer matures. By way of explanation, normally, as people wake up, the whole body and whole brain wake up together, whereas with sleepwalkers, the mobility part of the brain and the body wakes up, but the cognitive/awareness part of the brain remains sleeping, at least for a while.

At least that is one explanation, because as with so many things to do with the brain, no one actually knows, all that can be agreed by everyone, is that the child is still in a deep sleep when it is wandering about.

When the child is wandering around, the eyes are open, but the face appears extraordinarily impassive. The child can see but still trips or stumbles and still bumps into things. Usually, the child will not listen to a conversation or react to hearing its name.

The most common time for an bout of sleepwalking to take place is within the first two hours of sleep. The periods of somnambulance normally last from fifteen minutes to two hours and the sleepwalker may get dressed and go outside.

Although it is wise to bring this condition to your doctor’s attention, no remedy is normally necessary other than putting better security on all external doors and locking windows at low level to thwart the child from leaving the house.

They normally grow out of sleepwalking sooner or later. If you child sleepwalks, all you should do is lead it back to bed without waking it up needlessly. It is not risky to wake up a sleepwalker, but not necessary either.

Roughly one percent of adults sleepwalk as well, and this one percent are not inevitably the ones who sleepwalked as children. Adult sleepwalking usually has other more mundane causes such as stress, worry and insomnia or even some medical conditions such as epilepsy. When the reason goes away so does the sleepwalking.

Treatments vary significantly depending on the seriousness of the ‘sleepwalk’. Does the sufferer merely go down and sit in the living room or does the sufferer open the door and go outside where there is heavy traffic? Hypnotism is one treatment.

There are other safety measures that people living with sleepwalkers can or perhaps should take. Because sleepwalkers are prone to bumping into items, make certain there is nothing projecting anywhere that could poke them in the eye. Hang bells or wind chimes in places where they tend to go and on doors that they use in order to alert you that they are on the move.

Lock some doors with deadbolts and take the key out and finally make sure that all low-level glass is toughed and covered by curtains at night so that they do not attempt to walk through them without first opening them.

If you love being in your garden and want a set of garden furniture in order to take advantage of the lovely summer weather, it can be rather depressing when you go out to look at the cost of garden furniture, particularly if you are on a budget. And who is not on a budget these days? However, there is a way to buy cheap garden furniture and still end up with something that you can be proud of.

I would like you to be very careful about lies. I have just finished reading an article offering an ‘authentic teak (garden furniture) set’ that normally sells for about $4,500 for $29.97! Anybody who believes this sort of rubbish is a sad case indeed. Later on in the article, they admit that the wood is not teak, but is ‘constructed of hardwoods equivalent to teak’.

In fact, I do not believe that either. The writer has already told one lie and so is obviously deceitful. If ever you find a hole in someone’s advertising you ought to look elsewhere, especially on the Internet and particularly if the shop is not in your town so that you cannot go and visit it.

Regrettably, there are lots of liars on the Internet and they are giving the honest merchants a bad reputation. Many of them live in poor countries that have little or no Internet or business regulation. Places like Eastern Europe, China, Africa, South America and South-Eastern Asia.

If the standard of English in the advert is poor, go elsewhere. It is a pity for the honest person who does not speak English well, but much safer for you. Another check would be to send the proprietor an email.

If they do not respond, give them a wide birth. If they do respond, check their Internet Provider’s (IP) address. The IP address is a group of four numbers and the first group gives the country of origin of the email.

Be very careful of offers that seem to be too good to be true. Rich people purchase teak patio furniture at $4,500. Why do they pay that amount? Because the best teak furniture costs that much. How can rich people afford that much? Because they have good jobs. How do they get decent jobs? Because they are not stupid. If you could buy genuine teak furniture for $29.97, they would buy it too.

So, if you can only afford to buy cheap garden furniture, buy the best quality plastic furniture that you can afford and do not get sucked in by these conmen that are trying to con you that you can have a top of the range hardwood garden furniture set for $30. You cannot; and never will be able to; and probably never have been able to either.

When you begin to lose your eyesight, which happens to most of us at around the age of forty, you have two basic choices: glasses or contact lenses. Both contact lenses and specs have their advantages and disadvantages, so whichever you choose is really a personal decision. However, some individuals have ‘dry eyes’, which means that the tear ducts do not irrigate the eyes as much as normal.

If someone has dry eyes, then wearing glasses will not exacerbate the condition, but if someone with dry eyes chooses to wear contact lenses for personal reasons, the condition can make their lives very uncomfortable.

Some people who wear contacts but have dry eyes will almost certainly experience a discomfort that will lead to the person rubbing their eyes, which will make the situation worse.

There might be medical reasons for the lacrimal ducts not producing enough moisture to lubricate the eyes, but age can be a factor. If you have itchy eyes and are more than sixty, it might be in your interests to change from contacts to spectacles.

Some individuals find it a very hard decision to take. Television personalities and film stars seldom like to be photographed wearing glasses. All right, there are not too many of them, but there are hundreds of millions of people who look up to their screen idols and imitate them blindly.

One of the causes of dry eyes, apart from age or personal illness, is environmental conditions. Pollution affects different crowd in different ways, but tobacco smoke affects most peoples’ eyes, to say nothing of their lungs.

Evaporation is another reason for dry eyes. This sounds strange, because you would think that the water trapped between the eyes and the lenses could not evaporate, but many contact lenses are composed of fifty percent water to make them more flexible and therefore more comfortable.

A warm environment will evaporate water from the lenses and the lenses will endeavor to replenish themselves by sucking water off your eyes – a kind of osmosis. This is a sensible reason for soaking your contact lenses in a solution over night. The solution is there to sterilize the lenses, but it will also permit the lenses to ‘fill up’ again.

Therefore, a possible solution to the problem of dry eyes, if evaporation is your problem, is to replace your lenses half way through the day. another way of combatting dry eyes if you would like to wear contacts, is to put drops in your eyes every hour.

You can buy these drops from a chemist in small containers or you can purchase a litre of the solution and refill your droppers yourself. However, a saline solution (salt and water) is just as effective as anything and a great deal cheaper.

If none of this works for you then why not only switch to specs? The trend is to be more open about oneself and part of this trend is to admit your age, wear your wig openly, if that is what you do and be| seen wearing your spectacles.

Shopping for clothing on line is becoming more and more popular every day and one of the major sellers is clothing. There are many types of on line clothing sellers: there are on line clothing sellers that are Net versions of high street clothing stores and there are on line clothing sellers which only deal on line.

You might think that it is odd to like to purchase clothing without being able to see it or try it on, but in fact there is a long history of shoppers purchasing clothing from catalogues, which is virtually the same as purchasing on line. Purchasing on line is convenient for those who do not like shopping, do not have time to go shopping or who live a long way from good clothing stores.

If you are not sure which on line clothing retailers you can trust, you are probably better off ordering from shops that you already know from the shopping mall. Stores like Marks and Spencer, Abercrombie, Next, C and A, Walmart and Sears. Some of these on line stores hold a tremendous range of stock.

For instance, not every Marks and Spencer store might carry Mark’s full range of clothing, but their on line operation carries everything that Marks sells anywhere. There may also be special offers and discounts that are only offered to on line shoppers.

As I said earlier, there is a long tradition of buying clothing from a catalogue, so there are fairly sophisticated size charts and systems for measuring sizes correct the first time. If you exercise the same amount of caution whilst you purchase on line as you would if you were purchasing from a catalogue, you will not go far wrong. If you do make a mistake though or the quality is not what you had hoped for, you can usually return the garment.

Pay scrupulous attention to the sales and returns policies before you spend time looking through the shop’s catalogue of clothing. After all, if the conditions are not favourable, you will not want to order from the company anyway. If the company’s policies are acceptable, read the product descriptions carefully as well. Purchasing on line is not always quicker, but it is more handy

If you are still unsure about purchasing clothing on line, you could stick to ordering items of clothing with which you are accustomed and the size of which never changes. Objects such as shoes, hats, socks, underwear, scarves, gloves and overcoats. Overcoats are easy to measure for as most sizes merely go on the chest measurement. Similarly with shoes. Everyone knows their shoe size an then it is merely a question of the width: normal, wide or extra-wide.

It is fairly straight forward to go shopping for clothing on line and it is safe as well. You can pay for your items directly with your credit card, but you can increase your level of protection by paying through PayPal. It is easy to open an account and then you can pay via your credit card as well. If you have a difficulty both PayPal and your credit card company will take up your cause.

May 4th, 2011Designer Clothing

Wearing designer clothing was not done in our household while I was growing up, but then with five children, my parents probably did not have sufficient money to encourage us to think about wearing designer clothing. That has stayed with me and I do not think of wearing designer clothing even now that I can pay for them.

However, nowadays, most children seem to be conscious of designer clothing. This probably shows the power of marketing and the fact that modern advertisers are more ruthless in targeting children than there antecedents in the Fifties and Sixties were.

The difficulty with children wanting to wear designer clothing though is that they do not comprehend why they should wear a particular garment, they only see the adverts and the fact that their idols and friends are wearing them.

There is a decent case for wearing designer clothing but imitation is not one of them. Neither is having been persuaded to by advertisers and friends. The only good reason for preferring designer clothing is because you like a designer’s style and theme. Most designers have a particular style although this can altered from year to year.

A great deal of designers splash their names all around their clothes, which spoils them for me. However, all clothing designers like to have their name or logo in a prominent place. They do this for two reasons: firstly to advertise because otherwise their clothing is not distinctive enough ( a Lacrosse sweater without the crocodile is unrecognizable); and secondly, so that the wearer can show off the fact that they are wearing designer clothing.

Frequently clothing designers will branch out into other regions of designer wear. For instance, Gucci sanction shoes, sunglasses and wrist watches. Gucci is hoping that if you love their shoes you will also try their sunglasses and wrist watches as well. In fact, this tactic works well. Wearers of designer clothing build up a relationship with the designers that they like and are more probable to have confidence in that brand.

The problem for most individuals is the cost. Designer clothing is a great deal more expensive than regular clothing and that is how it is meant to be, because part of the reason for wearing designer clothing is snob value – to set yourself apart from the herd. This allows clothing designers to make vast profits which opens up another problem – counterfeiting.

Where there is a opportunity of big profits you will find counterfeits, imitations or copies. If you are inexpert at recognizing designer clothing, you could easily get sucked into spending a great deal of money on counterfeit items. Frequently it is not the clothing itself that is copied, although that is done too, but the accessories are copied a great deal.

I have no statistics, but I would not be surprised if there are ten times as many counterfeit Gucci sunglasses in the world as real ones. So be cautious, especially if you do not have sight of what you are purchasing, as in the case of the Net and be wary of market stalls and back street bulk traders.

There are quite a few opportunities to give a party during the year what with birthdays, Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, New Year, Independence Day et cetera, et cetera, but every party has one thing in common, they all have to be planned and the sooner that that planning is started the better.

There are decent reasons for beginning your planning early. Things can go wrong and individuals can let you down, but if you start planning early, you can switch to ‘plan B’ easily. You may also have ideas as you are doing your planning and then you will have time to execute them.

Depending on what form of party you are planning, you might have to start planning about a month ahead, but you might have to begin even earlier, if you require outside catering or specialized items like a bouncy house. You may have to book these items months in advance in order to get precisely what food you would like or the theme of the bouncy house that you want.

Depending on where you are holding the party and how many are coming, you might also have to get permission or even a license and you may even require portable toilets as well. How about security and sign posts? For instance, it is fairly standard for organizers of wedding parties in rural Thailand to employ security, who will also provide road signs and will direct traffic.

Another valid reason for planning early is that you can purchase items that you require weekly and so spread the cost. You could buy the paper plates, plastic knives, forks and spoons, plastic beakers, straws and paper table cloths in the first week, the other items you require, such as the drinks, crisps and biscuits, in the following weeks, until all you have to buy in the week of the party is the perishable food such as sausage rolls, pies, pasties, sandwiches and cakes.

You may also need specialized decorations, particularly for themed birthday parties, Halloween and Christmas. Buying the correct decorations for these kinds of parties can take a while, which is another reason for beginning your planning earlier rather than later.

Another good reason for getting started early is that you can send the invitations out early, which gives your guests the opportunity to put you in their diaries. It also gives them lots of time to accept or refuse the invitation so that you can either invite more people to make the numbers up or you can inform the caterers that you will need less food.

It is a sad fact that despite all your planning, some things will go wrong, they always do and you will forget some things too, people always do and the best precautions against these potential calamities are firstly to start planning early and secondly to get a couple of people involved in the planning, because as they say, two heads are better than one.

Most individuals find that the first sign of aging is thin lines about the eyes. If these project sideways from the outer corners of the eyes, they are referred to as “crows’ feet”. It the first sign people look to whilst attempting to appraise someone’s age. Therefore, it is the first position that those who want to hide their age turn their attention to.

The skin about the eyes is some of the thinnest and most delicate that we have and so it does have a problem retaining moisture. This is why most individuals who use moisturizer begin applying moisturizer to the skin around the eyes first – often quite young in life, well before their skin actually needs it, in the hope that their skin will appreciate the help by never revealing its true age.

However, you can not merely put any old cream on your face and hope for the best, so here are a couple of pointers to help make your selection of anti-wrinkle cream successful.

The first thing to comprehend is that no manufacturer of anti-wrinkle cream is going to tell you the whole truth. They all use cunning words to cover up the truth. Anti-wrinkle cream is not like paint, you cannot have faith in what you read on the tin. So, you will have to go by personal recommendation and trial and error.

Give a cream a few weeks or until the first pot runs out and if there is no improvement, move on. What works for your friend might not be of use for you, there being several types of skin.

Do you in fact know your skin sort? Have you ever had it analyzed? If, not this is a good place to begin. Once you know the skin sort you have about your eyes, you can eliminate at least two-thirds of the creams on the supermarket shelves.

Most honest specialists on skin aging will tell you that the biggest enemy of smooth skin is the sun. Therefore, you ought to apply a moisturizing sunscreen about the eyes from an early age. If the skin about your eyes is super-sensitive or you are allergic to creams, you should always wear a wide-brimmed hat or at least avoid going out in the sun when it is at its hottest, say, between 10 AM and 4 PM. and wear sunglasses that will block out the UV rays.

Applying antioxidants to the outside and the inside of the skin will help too. It is at least as important what you drink as what you rub on. Drinking alcohol and smoking are known to dry out the skin. Avoid diuretics like coffee as well. Diuretics cause you to lose more water than you take in with it, so for example, drinking a cup of coffee may cause you to lose a coffee cup and a quarter of bodily fluids.

Your skin needs plenty of moisture, you can help it by applying it from the outside, but you can also help it by drinking plenty of water, which will also help your body flush out toxins – a double whammy!

Cell phones are a boon to modern society, there is no question of that. They have made it simpler for parents to remain in contact with their children; they have released proprietors and bosses from the office and they give optimism to anyone who is stranded. It has been said that having a cell phone is the single biggest step to raising self-employed income in the Third World.

But it is not all good news, is it? Being continuously available to everyone can be a real nuisance. This is one of the drawbacks of cell phones. However, you may want to be accessible to some individuals, do you not, just not to everyone. So what can you do about that? There are a few methods to reduce your availability to everybody but the ones you choose.

The first method to limit your availability to every Tom, Dick or Harry is to assign ringtones. Who do you want to be allowed to contact you? Let us assume: family 24 hours; friends 16 hours; office 8 hours everyone else 8 hours. That is four different ringtones and once you have learned them, you have successfully freed up a lot of your availability.

One point here, do not put your cell phone number on your business card, but when you leave the office each night have the office phone redirected to your cell phone. That way, your office phone’s ringtone will permit you to recognize work-related calls.

The second way to reduce availability is to implement profiles. Most cell phones permit you to put different profiles on timers. This means that you could run in silent mode for a third of the day, in loud mode for a third of the day and regular mode for a third of the day.

Different phones have profiles with different capabilities, so you might be able to go even further than this. Read your cell phone instruction booklet to find out more. You might be able to turn voice mail on for some ringtones, say, office phone, in some profiles, say, silent mode, but always ring loud for others, perhaps, for family.

Another one of the drawbacks of cell phones is annoyance caused by lack of cell phone etiquette. Some people are thoroughly rude in the way they conduct themselves on their cell phones. In Britain a cell phone is known as a mobile, which is good advice: if you are in company and your phone rings, stand up and become mobile to somewhere where you will not bother those around you. Lack of cell phone etiquette annoys individuals everyday on public transport, in restaurants and in cinemas.

There are two other things that owners of cell phones ought to keep in mind: firstly, a ringing phone is just a signal that someone is asking to speak to you, you do not have to behave like a trained animal and stop everything that you are doing to answer it (ringtones can help here too); and secondly, cell phones can be switched off or put in silent mode with the vibrator switched on, if necessary.

Collecting antique dolls is a hobby that a great deal of women grow into or want to if they had the time or and the money. A collection of antique dolls in a beautiful display case is a very attractive asset, but collecting antique dolls is not as easy as it might sound.

Well, to define that in the right manner, it depends what you would like the antique dolls for. As with any hobby that has the capability to make the collector money, it is not easy to get it correct, but if you merely want to enjoy your collection you will have an easier time of it.

Millions of women collect old dolls, but it is unlikely that any large number of them actually make any money out of their hobby, because you have to study and the professional competition is fierce. It is the same as collecting coins or stamps: you can have a beautiful collection of pretty commemorative stamps or coins that is worthless in monetary terms, because there were too many of that sort or that year manufactured, whereas you could have a collection of a dozen dreary stamps worth a million.

Therefore, if you want to start a collection of antique dolls, the first thing to do is visit the library and borrow some books on the subject. If there are no illustrations, you can probably find some photos on the Net in order to afford identification easier.

One of the first things you require to acquaint yourself with is the names of the most well-known manufacturers of dolls in the 150 years of the Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries. Learn the names of the companies, the names of the dolls and an average price.

If you come across what you think is a good deal at a car boot or yard sale, do not get put off by a shabby appearance. Many dolls lead a tough life, but they can be repaired pretty easily and there are many dolls’ hospitals if you need expert help, advice or specialist parts like eyes or buttons. The original clothing can be repaired or replaced and the doll would still be valuable if it is rare, popular or sought after.

You know, some things are not particularly rare but are still costly because they capture the imagination of a great deal of people. Baby Boomer toys from the Fifties and Early Sixties will almost certainly acquire this status when the Boomers retire and maybe begin a collection.

Look out for antiques fairs to help you gain more first hand knowledge. There are often specialized antiques fairs in fairly large towns and one sort of fair is antique toys, in which the section on antique dolls is certain to feature fairly prominently. It is very functional to be able to see the dolls ‘in the flesh’ so to speak in order to know what you should be looking out for whilst browsing.

Books, photos and the Net are useful resources, but there is no substitute for hands-on experience and talking with collectors and dealers who are passionate about collecting antique dolls.

Have you decided that you would like an air purifier for your home? You may think it is a good concept if the air in your home is ‘unclean’ in any way or even if it is damp and fausty. There are many reasons why a home and its inhabitants can benefit from an air purifier especially if you live on a busy road or near a factory. Too many hairy pets can also become a cause of allergies which can get cleared up by the use of an air purifier.

If you do decide to get one, there are a number of different types to pick from and various price levels. You can also shop on or off line. In fact, the cost of these devices is frequently lower on line because the vendor does not have the overheads of a bricks and mortar shop front, although you will have to remember to add postage and package and any local taxes that may be applicable. It is still usually cheaper to purchase on line rather than in the shopping mall.

However, both methods of shopping have their advantages and disadvantages, so we will take a closer look at these next. Really what you need to do is compare both methods of shopping and see which is best for you. The way that I do that is by going on line and typing something like ‘air purifiers for sale’ into a search engine.

The results that come up will be numerous, probably well over 100,000, so pick a dozen or so and do some research. Amazon is normally a good place to read users’ reviews. Make notes on brand names, prices, functions and capabilities. Then take these notes to the Mall and go looking for air purifiers.

With your newly found information of these devices, you can question sales personnel and compare prices. Write more notes and do some comparisons.

Do not forget to add postage and packing and local taxes to the on line prices. Another thing that you should take into account is the warranty. What happens if the purifier breaks down? Will you have to send it hundreds of miles away to be repaired? Who will pay for that?

It is always easier to claim on a guarantee if it can be done locally. However, what are the chances of it breaking down anyway? It depends on the length of the warranty actually.

Some of the functions that you should come across whilst researching your prospective air purifier are whether it uses an air filter or not, whether it can cool air or not and whether it can dehumidify or not. These three features are convenient for different conditions, but there is no point paying for something that you will never use – the dehumidifier for instance.

Some people prefer a device that does not need an air filter or which uses a washable filter, but this is usually because of laziness and false economy. There are numerous different types of filters for different pollutants so they are more flexible and ultimately far better.
