June 7th, 2011Financial Stress

There are various forms of financial stress, because it can stem from your business events, from your personal circumstances or your family life. However, basically they all from an incapacity to pay bills. However, financial stress does not always result from a lack of money it can also come from having handled money badly. If you are suffering from financial stress, then perhaps we have a few pointers that can help.

The first step is to get your paperwork and bill-writing kit organized. This can become as complicated or as easy as you like. You could have an envelope rack hanging somewhere prominently like in the kitchen. (An envelope rack is like what they display newspapers in at a newsagents).

Get yourself a container and put in it pens, paper, your cheque book, envelopes, a calculator and stamps. Decide on a day every week when you will handle bills, say a Sunday evening.

Every time a bill comes in, you ought to open it and put it in the letter rack. If it does not need your immediate attention, which can occur, over the first month, mark on the outside of the envelope the date you have to post the cheque, say seven days before the due date. Mark your bill-paying days on your calendar.

Create a list of the bills you have paid and strive to keep them grouped together. For example, all your monthly electricity bills on one page, gas on another, mortgage etc. In this manner you will be able to predict what your bill will be next time and the date it will arrive. This will allow you to maintain a basic financial plan. Predictability takes some of the stress out of finances, thereby reducing your financial stress.

If some bills are a bit random, coming in at different times of the month, try writing to the company and asking them if they can consolidate the bills into one monthly bill that will arrive in the week of your choice, normally the first or the fourth week of the month.

In the start, you might have to write a few letters to explain that you have taken your finances in hand but that it might take a few months before you are on top of them. This should stave off any litigation if you have let things slide too far already.

You ought to find that the level of your financial stress should steadily reduce as you become used to your new financial system and as you see that this system works. One last tip is to pay some bills every time you are paid yourself.

It is worth a couple of months of financial difficulties or overtime to reduce your financial stress and get on top of your finances again. Financial stress, like all kinds of stress, is a killer – don’t let it get to you too.

Most people associate balding with men and that is not surprising as most western men do go bald sooner or later. Most men really hate going bald. Some take to brushing their hair in a different way, having it cut short or even shaved off completely or they wear a hat. Increasingly, men are seeing balding as a natural process over which they have no control and merely get on with their lives. This is a step in the correct direction.

However, women go bald as well, or at least they can do. Traditionally western women care more about their looks than their men folk do and so women can take it very badly when or if they begin losing their hair. Some women take to wearing a wig and others try a hair transplant.

The difficulty is that men and women lose their hair for different reasons and hair transplants favour the causes of men’s baldness rather than women’s.

Typical male baldness is known as ‘male pattern baldness’ and everybody knows men whom it has affected. It means that men lose hair initially at the front, a receding hairline, and then on the top; leaving a band of hair running about three sides of the head. The three lower sides actually have healthy, growing, self-replicating follicles.

It is this hair that is used if a man goes for a hair transplant – healthy hair and it has to do with testosterone, the male hormone, as oestrogen is the female hormone.

Female baldness tends to affect the whole of the head at the same time, which means that there is not a crop of healthy hair follicles from which to transplant hair to other regions of the head. This makes most women inappropriate clients for a hair transplant.

Fortunately for women up to about retirement age, baldness only affects a small percentage of them unless it is through illness or the cure of an illness. On the other hand, just about 5% of women are good candidates for a hair transplant. Women who have lost their hair through using rollers for a long period of time, usually have a couple of patches of good hair left that can be utilized for transplanting.

Other women who have a good chance of a successful hair transplant are those who have a kind of male pattern baldness and those who have lost hair due to damage surrounding areas of surgery. Those who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy, will often make a full or near full recovery when the chemo sessions are complete.

The easiest option for older women is to wear a wig. It is not ideal, naturally, but it does restore some confidence to those who could not otherwise go out without hair. Other choices are hats, scarves and turbans, jus like many women wore in the Twenties and Thirties.

Dengue fever is caused by a virus that is transferred from person to person with the bite of a tiger striped mosquito. Dengue typically starts with high fever, chills, headache, pain behind the eyes, and joint and muscle pain making the individual look flushed with a rash appearing around three to four days after the onset of fever. The rash spreads to the rest of the body and shows up often as an inflammation of the lymph nodes.

Dengue, in its most prevalent form has an incubation period of about |five to eight days from the start of fever. It is worth noting that a person has fever for around four to seven days and it is usual for most people to recover without any major complications. However, long term effects and complications cannot be entirely ruled out in all cases, with some taking numerous months to recover and some having fatal recurrences.

This arises especially in areas where dengue is endemic and there is the likelihood of repetitive infections and relapses. The most significant of effects or complications are dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS).

Dengue hemorrhagic fever known as Hemorrhagic dengue, Dengue shock syndrome, Philippine hemorrhagic fever, Thai hemorrhagic fever or Singapore hemorrhagic fever can result in dengue shock syndrome and is fatal in about 1/20 cases that have a re-infection.

The seriousness of the impact of dengue in the form of dengue hemorrhagic fever rests in essence on one contracting a different virus after building immunity to one particular sort of virus. The danger factors increase with having antibodies to dengue virus from a prior infection, being younger than 12, female, or Caucasian.

Look out for the effects of dengue hemorrhagic fever in the individual being not only restless and irritable, but also becoming sweaty and acquiring shock-like indications. Tiny spots of blood and bleeding could take place on the skin with substantial patches below the skin and negligible injuries causing severe bleeding. Some of the early indications that might be noticed are decreased appetite, fever, headache, joint pain, malaise, muscle pain, and vomiting.

Then you could notice more acute indications like restlessness followed by skin discoloration caused by the flow of blood into the tissues from ruptured blood vessels in mucous membranes especially in the mouth. There could also be a sweeping rash followed by flat round spots caused by internal bleeding in the skin from the capillaries.

This dengue situation could worsen and show up as a shock-like state, cold clammy extremities, and sweatiness. A doctor could examine the patient and find other indications like enlarged liver, low blood pressure, red eyes, swollen glands, and weak and rapid pulse.

The treatment might include a cure of the indications and a transfusion of fresh blood or platelets to right bleeding problems, IV fluids and electrolytes to right electrolyte imbalances and oxygen therapy for treating the unusually low blood oxygen level and hydration with intravenous (IV) fluids to treat dehydration. In addition, a stay in an intensive care environment is usually necessary.

It is vital to get to your medical professional in time during repeated attacks and to make sure of personal hygiene and cleanliness at home and its surrounds. Using fully-covering clothing, mosquito netting, mosquito repellent with DEET and avoiding travelling whilst mosquitoes are prevalent would help to control dengue.

Hut tubs have been commercially available for around 50 years, so you can guess that the technology has come a long way. In the early days, hot tubs were normally only a small round wooden tub that was bursting at the seams with more than two individuals in it. They were invariably round in shape and there was very little choice.

The first hot tubs to appear in the States were seen in the 1940′s, but they were usually little more that than wooden barrels filled with hot water intended to give a long deep soak. In the 1950′s, the idea grew and families started to create or buy hot tubs in order to relax and to alleviate the indications of arthritis. By the mid 1960′s, individuals were adding home-manufactured heaters and pumps and very crude versions of the contemporary wooden hot tub were being born.

One early innovator was Roy Jacuzzi who invented and marketed the first hot tub that incorporated swirling water and jets. This whirlpool bath literally began the whole industry in 1968. In the early 1970′s, manufacturers began to incorporate stronger jets into their hot tubs and some manufacturers started constructing more comfortable designs out of fibreglass and acrylic. The business was taking off big time.

Jacuzzi started to produce bigger models so that friends or a family could all enjoy the experience together. Most of the modernizations since the late 1970′s have been technical, but these technical improvements have been quite serious.

The filters are more easily accessible these days which means that they are more likely to be cleaned as often as they ought to be in order to avoid the build up of bacteria from rotting vegetation and hair. This will pollute the water and could pose a health hazard. Not only that, but clogged filters means that the pump has to work harder to circulate the water which means more wear and tear and eventually, more cost.

There is a greater choice of materials and colours nowadays. Before, the choice was: what sort of timber do you prefer? Now you can still have that option, plus the choice of any colour acrylic you want too. Or you can have an acrylic tub inside a wooden (or synthetic wood) exterior or skirt.

The advantages of the synthetic materials are that they last longer, are easier to clean and can be impregnated with a substance that kills or wards off bacteria and mould.

The seating arrangement can be personalized in contemporary spas to suit individual bathers. Every seat might have one or more directable jets and the seat itself might be made to a specific height for a certain person or for a certain injury or condition.

The water heating arrangements are a lot more flexible as well. Nowadays, the water can be heated by gas, electricity, your homes central heating system or by solar power, which is a colossal improvement if you live in a country that enjoys a great deal of sun.

To top it all off, you can add aromatherapy oils and spa salt crystals to the water by placing them in a draw like in a washing machine and have them circulated in the water evenly.

Have you ever used an electric blanket? Some individuals are frightened of lying on something that is plugged into the national grid and I have to admit that when I think of electric blankets in that manner, they do sound quite frightening.

However, there are two kinds of electric blankets: there are those that are intended to stay on all night and there are those that are intended to be turned off and unplugged before you get into bed.

The second sort is of course the one to be suggested for those of a nervous disposition. I have never owned an electric blanket, because my father thought that they were for ‘sissys’, but I have slept in beds that made use of electric blankets.

When I stayed over at my maternal grand-parents’ house or my Aunty Lil’s there was always an electric blanket in the bed. My aunty used a pre-warmer and my grand-parents used the ‘always-on’ variety. As a young boy, I have to say that the ‘always-on’ variety of electric blanket was too warm for me.

However, in those days, in the Sixties, houses were not as draft-proof as they are now and I did not know anyone whose house was centrally heated or double glazed. In fact, everyone that I knew used to put an overcoat on the bed in winter if it got especially cold. It did not cross my mind that that was odd, everyone did it.

The fact is that some people feel the cold more than others and there are numerous reasons for this ranging from frailty to age and sickness. Another reason for using electric blankets is if it is too expensive to heat the whole house or bedroom. It is always going to be cheaper to heat a bed that it is to heat a bedroom. The cost of pre-heating a double bed is still pennies compared with using an electric fire.

Some people, my wife included, likes to keep the background temperature in the bedroom cold. OK, cold in Thailand is about 20c, but while we were in the UK, she insisted that we slept with the windows open in winter and it was truly cold. She is not alone in liking to sleep in a warm bed while her face is cold. She says that she gets a better night’s sleep in this fashion.

If you or a sick or old relative would like to try an electric blanket, be cautious where you get it from. In saying this I mean be wary of buying a cheap electric blanket from abroad off eBay in case it is not manufactured to run off the electric supply that you have in your country.

You also need to make certain that the blanket conforms to the health and safety laws in your country. Electric blankets are safe if you follow basic health and safety rules, but be wary of ‘always-on’ blankets if you eat in bed.

Accidents occur even on the most well planned camping vacations. You have to not only plan to avoid injuries, but you also have to plan on how to deal with them if and when they occur while camping. The important thing is to remember to stay calm. The worse thing you can do is panic.

You have to keep a clear head and just let your first aid training kick in. If you don’t have any first aid training then you should attend some classes before going camping. If you are not calm then you may not administer the correct treatment and this could just make it more serious.

Three common ailments that befall campers are dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. To most people these all seem like similar ailments, and they are, but they each need to be treated differently. Confusing which treatment goes with which will not only halt healing, but it could also do damage. The principal common problem when camping is lack of fluids. The best thing to do is just to keep yourself well hydrated with water.

You may drink nothing but lemonade and tea at home, but if you do that when camping you will quickly find yourself in a hospital room for dehydration. There are a few signs of dehydration besides the obvious thirst. Excessive sweating, rapid breathing, clammy skin, and loss of skin elasticity are all signs of dehydration. Children may also have hollow eyes when dehydrated.

If someone becomes dehydrated when you’re camping then you want to have them rest in the shade and drink plenty of cold water. You’ll also need them to remove any unnecessary clothing. Heat exhaustion is another common problem while camping. This is caused by not only excessive heat, but can also be caused by too much humidity.

A person with heat exhaustion will have pale, clammy skin, rapid breathing, excessive sweating, thirst and nausea, headache, and exhaustion. Again you’ll want the individual to take a break from camping and completely rest with their feet elevated. Cool water and a shady place are a necessity.

You’ll even need to sponge the person with water. The third common camping ailment is heat stroke. Heat stroke is caused by your body not regulating body temperature properly, causing your body to overheat. Symptoms are flushed, dry skin, a lack of sweat, rapid and weak pulse, irrational behavior, staggering, headache, and nausea.

If not diagnosed early and treated this can also lead to a collapse, a seizure, a coma, and even death. If someone gets heat exhaustion while camping you need to get help immediately and get an ambulance. Have them rest in the shade with their head elevated.

Use ice or cold water to cool them down and if they are conscious make them drink. These three ailments are common when camping and should be watched for and treated right away.

First aid knowledge is essential when camping. Remember that water always helps, so have a lot of it with you at all times. If anything does happen on your camping trip stay calm and remember what you have learned.

If he’s red raise his head, if he’s pale raise his tail, is a good rhyme to help you remember what to do if something happens while you’re camping. Stay cool and hydrated and you should be able to avoid problems like these on your camping trip.

While most people who diet in the world do so to lose weight, there are also those who diet to gain weight. There are far not so many who would like to put on weight, it is true, but the number is still fairly high.

Who would like to gain weight? The overwhelming majority of those who want to gain weight have been ill and perhaps for a long time.

However another group of people who want to gain weight are those involved with power sports. They want to ‘bulk up’ their muscles in order to become able to lift heavier weights. There are a great deal of products on the market to help athletes bulk up, but most of them contain protein and/or creatine and a host of vitamins and nutrients.

The fact is that you can make extra muscle without supplements but you will still have to eat more and train more. Dietary supplements of extra protein, nutrients and vitamins only serve to speed up the process.

Protein is the preferred supplement to gain weight among body-builders, field athletes and weight lifters. Protein can be derived from many sources, but body builders prefer their foremost sources to be whey, soy and eggs.

This is because these sources contain very little or no fat and particularly cholesterol. Most individuals in training seem to prefer around two grammes of protein per pound of body weight. Protein can be bought as a food additive, tablets, milkshake powder or in the form of a nutrition bar.

Creatine is also a very well-liked source of bulking up muscles but it is more complicated to use. You must be willing to read and obey the instructions on the box if you would like to try using creatine.

The fundamental course of action of using creatine is to ‘load’ your body with the supplement with a precise event in mind and then to use it for that event. Some people take this to mean two events a week!

Vitamins and so-called micro-vitamins are also vital supplements if you want to put on weight in a good, healthy way. Each cubic centimetre of your body requires its quota of vitamins, so if you want to gain weight it only makes sense that you will require more vitamins and nutrients too.

If you bulk up by eating healthy food the extra vitamins are not a difficulty, but if you try to take a short-cut by using bulking agents as described above, you will have to check that you really are eating everything that you require to bulk up those muscles.

Muscle-building supplements do work, but they have to be used sensibly. It is not always vital to go to a physician first, but you ought to talk to someone who has some knowledge on the issue. Not another body-builder, but someone like the coach or trainer at your local fitness centre.

If you are way out of shape or have other worries, the trainer might suggest that you go see a GP first, in which case you would be unwise not to follow his or her advice before attempting to use supplements to build muscle.

Snoring is considered a ‘benign problem’ by most people who snore. A bit of a joke really. But it is no joke to people who have to listen to it. No joke at all. Snoring can also be a sign that there is a deeper problem. It is similar to obstructive sleep apnoea, but is not necessarily the same.

It is equivalent to obstructive sleep apnoea too in that the sufferer is rarely aware of the difficulty – that is left to a sleeping partner or everyone else in the house.

Deprivation of sleep may sound like bad luck or something that can be caught up on the next day, but in actual fact it goes far deeper than that. Those who have not had a decent night’s sleep find it difficult to concentrate and might even nod off. This is obviously not a good idea if you are a driver.

Sleep apnoea causes a lack of quality sleep on a regular basis and so it is no surprise that sufferers of obstructive sleep apnoea run three times more danger of a driving accident or a serious accident at work than others. That is horrific enough, but the sleeping partner of a sufferer of obstructive sleep apnoea runs the same increased danger.

Apnoea also puts more strain on the heart and is a major issue in high blood pressure. It also starves the brain of oxygen with whatever effects that may have.

There are a number of methods of treating snoring (apnoea is normally treated with an oxygen mask known as CPAP).

There are nose strips which stop the walls of the nose collapsing and reverberating, if that is your problem. There are special pillows that raise the head reducing the weight of a heavy neck on the windpipe. There are dental appliances to stop the tongue and other parts slipping back into the airway causing an obstruction. There is acupuncture and there is hypnotism.

However, it is worth saying, that most of the loudest snorers are overweight. For these people, the first approach has to be to lose weight, because that will also benefit them in many other ways too.

Some people find that switching their sleeping position assists with their snoring. The worst position for snoring is lying on your back. Lying on your side is a decent way of decreasing snoring as can lying on your front.

The thing to keep in mind is the weight of your skin and flesh weighing down on your windpipe, especially on your throat. There is also the problem of your tongue and palate falling into the back of your throat and either vibrating or blocking the passage – lying on your side or front stops this happening.

Most people love their cars or are at least very proud of them. Therefore, it makes sense to keep your car looking good by maintaining the bodywork, frequently known as the coachwork, and cleaning it regularly. In this article we will take a look at five tips for keeping your vehicle looking nice.

#1 – Scratches: scratches are the second worst thing for car owners. The worst are crashes, but drivers usually take care of those pretty quickly. A driver has to treat scratches in the same manner. The reason why scratches are such an enemy is because they expose the bare metal and permit the ingress of water which will begin corrosion.

There could be a small scratch on the wing and you could imagine that it is not serious for months, but all the time the coachwork is rusting away. One day, you will wake up to blistered paintwork and unsightly brown stains. Always treat scratches as soon as you see them, even if it is merely to put some clear nail varnish on them until you can have them treated properly.

#2 – Elements: your car has been manufactured to withstand the elements, but it is best to shield it from them whenever possible. Therefore, garage your car if you can, or construct a car port for it and if you cannot do that, get a car cover. The wind is continually sand and grit blasting the paintwork and the sun is continually attempting to bleach it. In fact, none of the elements are helpful for paintwork and nor is acidic bird droppings, so do not park under a tree.

#3 – Protection: in order to supply protection for your car when it is outside its garage, it is essential to give it a healthy coat of wax polish to filter the sun’s rays out and protect it from rain and wind-borne debris. This protective shell of wax will be blasted and washed off , so it is necessary to replenish it each week or two, depending on the weather where you live. If you live near the sea, a protective coating of wax is even more vital because salt water will corrode metal far more quickly than fresh water.

#4 – Condition: always be on the look out for issues with your car’s paintwork. Be particularly vigilant near joints, welds, folds, holes and bolts or screws. The paintwork is often disturbed at these points and that can lead to water ingress and corrosion.

#5 – Care: detail your car frequently. Either do it yourself or have it done. It is better to do it yourself, but if you have it done, tell them that you want to be made aware of any, even the most minor, problems with the paintwork.

If you follow these tips, your car will look a lot better for a lot longer and it will also maintain its value for longer, so in other words, maintaining your car will pay for itself in the long run.

For some reason that is not yet completely understood, there are more people suffering from allergies now than ever before. Some scientists hypothesize that the cause of this growth in sufferers from allergies is the raised pollution in the air we breathe and the increased use of additives in the processed foods we eat. However, there could be another reason as well.

Our homes are better heated than ever before and are practically hermetically sealed. This permits bugs and particularly mites to live with us in bigger numbers and for longer than ever before. It is feasible that we, all human beings, have become sensitivized by the huge number of mites living with us. The dust mite is the worst culprit. Fleas, their faeces and their eggs are second, followed by other creatures such as bed bugs and their faeces.

So allergy sufferers are now getting problems from pollen and pollution when they go outside the house and from dust mites and other insects when they stay in. So, what can allergy sufferers do about it?

There are a number of items to test out. Some are costly and others are practically free. An air conditioning system with an anti-allergy filter is the costly alternative but it will help against airborne dust and insect faeces kicked up by dusting, brushing and vacuuming.

A bagless vacuum cleaner like the Dyson will also help trap these flying allergens or a wet-and-dry vacuum cleaner will help you wash the crap out of your carpets as well without blowing it up into the air.

Carpets are a major source of allergens and so are pets, but an unexpected source of grief for many people is their bed. Again it is the dust mites which are the foremost culprits. They are happy to live in your bed and eat the dead skin that has dropped off you.

There is nothing you can do about shedding skin, we all do it and we all need to do it and you will never stop all dust mites. The aim is to keep their numbers under control.

A fairly cheap way of doing this is by fitting an anti-allergy cover on your mattress. An anti-allergy mattress cover is a finely-woven sheet that fits on top of the mattress. This sheet is so finely woven that insects, bugs and mites cannot get through it from the mattress to get to you.

Now this does not stop dust mites breeding on top of it, so for it to be effective, you have to wash it weekly as you do the rest of your bedding, but at least it is easier than laundering the mattress, which most people do not do from one year to the next, which is why the dust mites can multiply to outrageous numbers giving rise to problems for allergy sufferers.

Therefore, if you believe that an anti-allergy mattress cover will help you, you ought to purchase two so that you can have one on the bed and one in the laundry.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on a variety of topics, but is now involved with the Visco Elastic Mattress. If you would like to know more, please visit our website at Egg Crate Mattress Pad For Sale.

We all realize that we ought to exercise. Some individuals even like doing it, but unfortunately for society and most of us in it, the majority of us cannot be bothered to get off their backsides, which is why the populations of Western countries are turning to lard before our very eyes. This is a shame not just for the people involved but for the tax-payers who have to refill the public coffers in order to take care of them when they get sick.

So, how can we induce ourselves to take more exercise? Obviously government health warnings are merely benefiting marketing agencies and the media, so what else? Maybe, they could tell us: ‘Play tennis once a week, you will enjoy that vodka a whole lot more afterwards!’. Or ‘Play a round of golf first and that G&T will taste better!’ Or: ‘Walk a mile to the pub, have a pint, walk back and have another one, you will need it!’ The puritanical way definitely has not worked, so why not give realism a try?

I mentioned golf there more or less by accident, but it strikes me that going for a game of golf and having a drink with your friends later is a whole lot better than watching it on TV with a can. It is not merely the walking either, which most of us do not do enough of anyway, but it is the actions connected with hitting the ball – the swing and hand-eye co-ordination as well. And the social life afterwards, and loads of people miss out on a social life especially after retirement or the death of a spouse.

Now golf may not seem to you to be an interesting sport and I understand that point of view completely, but that is because it is not until you realize how hard it is to hit that ball hundreds of yards onto the green that most people can understand the difficulty of playing the game well. That may be true of most sports, but golf does look so unhurried, does it not?

One of the good things about golf is that you can play with golfers of comparable ability to yourself so that you do not feel embarrassed or ‘out of place’. If you join a ramblers’ club after 30 years of watching TV, you will soon feel old and past it, but golf is different, because there is no pace, no hurry, you can take as long as you like, you can let others ‘play through’ (go on before you) and you can call it a day and go back to the club house whenever you like.

Many retired people take up golf, especially if they were used to being active at work, but it is also a hobby, that you can take up if you think that you are not active enough at any age. It is surprising how much a little bit of extra exertion can help stave off stiff limbs and chubbiness.

If you are asking yourself: Is golf a good form of exercise? Or if you are just into golf, please go along to our web site entitled Golfing Tips for Beginners

June 3rd, 2011What Is Equine Colic?

If you have or have had a horse, you will probably have heard of equine colic. However, when you try to find out what equine colic is, you run up against a brick wall. This is because the term is an old one, coming from the days when surgery and the knowledge of how bodies work was in its childhood. The term ‘equine’ naturally refers to ‘horses’ – from the Latin, but ‘colic’?

Well, ‘colic’ refers to any (spasmodic) pain originating in the stomach, intestines or bowels, but what colic does not refer to is a specific illness. Therefore, if you say: ‘My horse is suffering from colic’, you are saying that your horse has abdominal pains, but you do not know what is causing them or you are not saying, if you do know.

In other words colic refers to symptoms not an actual illness. You will normally have to call in a vet if you would like to unearth the cause of the pain. Sometimes, these abdominal pains pass on their own like flatulence, but other times it can be indicative of a problem, especially if the colic lasts more than an hour or so.

If the pain persists for more than a few hours, you need to take the decision whether to call in the vet or not. This is never cheap as all animal-lovers know and if surgery is necessary then costs will go through the roof.

The decision is a problematic one and depends mainly on the value of the animal to you. Numerous horses die of undefined ‘colic’ because the owner will not or cannot pay thousands of dollars for a vets help.

Experience will help the horse owner to judge whether the cause of the colic will pass or whether surgery is necessary and a decent vet will give you an honest estimation for the price of a call-out charge, which will normally be around $100..

It is difficult for the young or novice owner of a horse to know if their animal has a problem, but when an animal, including a human, is off its food, you can be fairly certain that something is wrong.

It might simply have eaten something mildly poisonous or it may have flatulence, but it may have eaten something like a nail by accident too. If a horse keeps looking at its flanks or even nipping at them, there may be a difficulty too.

Your horse might have a blockage or constipation if you see him having difficulty doing his business. This may pass or it may take a laxative to ease him or it could be something worse.

We have all seen horses rolling in rapture in a field, but if your horse is rolling in a different manner – you think it is not the same, that might also be an indication that he has a problem. So would excessive sweating after little or no exercise.

An experienced horse person will have seen all this before and have an idea what to do, but it is very distressing for the novice.

June 3rd, 2011How To Recognize Bedbugs

I presume you already know that bedbugs have made a big come back in the West. Bedbugs were practically completely eliminated in western Europe, the United States and Canada in the 1950′s, but have been reappearing in ever larger numbers since about 1995. It is supposed that this is due to more frequent foreign vacations and increased immigration..

You see, bedbugs travel around by hitching a lift on people’s clothing and then jumping off when it gets quiet and warm enough again. The poor little creatures are actually quite shy, you know, which is why you could have a growing family of them in your house long before you become bitten. And bedbugs can go for six months without feeding.

Bedbugs are small, usually brownish beetles that look a bit banded, because of the hairs on their back. They have a long pointy beak for sucking blood and can move astonishingly quickly if disturbed. Some Individuals say that they cannot be seen with the naked eye, but this only applies to those of us with very bad eyesight. A bedbug is around the size, colour and shape or an apple pip on legs.

In fact, you may never see a bedbug in your room, but you might see remnants of its activity. If you see brown smears on your sheets, they are bedbug droppings but if you see red streaks, that is your blood. You may also see black spots, which are also faeces and hollow insect cases, which is where they have shed a skin on their way to adulthood.

Those who have knowledge of bedbugs say that you do not have to see them, you can smell them. Apparently, their smell is very distinctive, but you would have to speak to quite an old person to describe it for you as most individuals under 60 will not have had many dealings with bedbugs, if any at all.

Bedbug bites have an effect on people in different ways. Some Individuals react quite badly to the bites while others may hardly notice them at all. However, most of us notice some red marks that itch. A little like mosquito bites.

I suppose that you are asking yourself how you can get rid of these little bugs by now. Well, here is the bad news – bedbugs are infamously a problem to be rid of. In fact, if you have an infestation of bedbugs, you should notify your landlord and the health authorities but if you own the property yourself, you will probably have to pay to get the exterminators in as pesticides and insecticides are practically useless against them.

The best manner to deal with bedbugs is not to let them get a foothold in your premises. Most of us pick up a bedbug while on holiday, staying in a hotel at home or while using public transport or in public places like cinemas.

So, examine your clothing, particularly under the collar and in the pockets. The only surefire manner of killing bedbugs is the use of heat, so if you find one on your coat, put your clothing in the tumble dryer on full heat to kill the bedbug, its friends and its eggs.

June 3rd, 2011Water And Exercise

We, as human beings, as very reliant on water. We are approximately 70% water and we cannot live without it. In fact, we can go weeks without food, but merely about three days without water.

One of the sad facts about the Western diet is that a great deal of people no longer drink water. They have completely replaced water with sugary soft drinks, which of course contain enough water but also contain too much sugar or sugar substitute.

The first step that these individuals have to take in order to get back on track is to stop this silly, childish habit and start drinking plain water again. It has been worked out that about two-thirds of individuals do not drink enough water, which is saying that they are in a permanent condition of partial dehydration.

Water has several important functions in our bodies, but one of the most vital ones is to flush out toxins. It is worth knowing that when you feel thirsty, your body has arrived at a state where it is crying out for water. In other words, it has already passed the state where it needs water, so strive not to wait until you are thirsty before you take a drink.

Another fact is that tea, coffee and alcohol (some of our most well-liked adult drinks) are diuretics, which is to say that they force urination, often more than they replace. So you can put 250mm in but you may lose 270mm. This is naturally not the purpose of drinking if you are thirsty

Exercise is another reason why we lose water. In fact, merely by being alive, we lose water due to body heat and evaporation, but while we are actually doing something, we lose water fairly rapidly. You may get worried about drinking water before going to sleep, but if you can do it, it is a very healthy thing.

If you wake up a bit groggy each day and need breakfast, tea or coffee before you can actually wake up, it might be because of dehydration, not because you have problems waking up. Being dehydrated causes drowsiness and lack of concentration.

In fact, dehydration is a major killer in the Third World. This is not because there is no water, but because the water is contaminated. This contaminated water causes diarrhoea which causes dehydration. It is vital to keep drinking when you are sick even if you do not feel like eating.

It is recommended that we drink at least eight tumblers of water (say, of 250mm each) a day. More if you are exercising or sick. It sounds like a great deal of water, but most individuals are awake for about 16 hours a day, so eight glasses works out to merely one each two hours.

It is more of a difficulty to get into the habit of drinking water on a regular basis than it is to really do the drinking, but once you have established the habit, you will feel better on a day-to-day basis. It will not prevent you from getting sick, but your general degree of health will improve, because you are getting rid of toxins.

Most people are scared stiff of contracting cancer. That is perfectly understandable – who wants to spend a couple of years experiencing chemotherapy just to die a couple of years later? Or even if you recover it is a couple of years out of your life that have been worrying and gruelling. And not merely for the patient but for friends and family too.

So, some people do everything possible to reduce the risks of developing cancer. Most of us do not think we know how to do this, others are not certain, but they have heard or read something that sounds ‘around about correct’ and others are convinced that they know how to avoid contracting cancer.

My wife is convinced that I may get cancer from eating burnt toast and others are convinced that they can stave off cancer by saturating their body with green tea. It has often been pointed out and for decades too, that countries where green tea is the norm, say the Far East, have a much lower incidence of cancer than we do in the West.

And this is almost certainly true at the moment. But why is it a fact? I live in Asia and diabetes is the number one killer near me. Do Asians not get cancer as much as we do because they drink green tea or for other reasons?

In fact, where I live in Northern Thailand, I have never seen anyone drink tea or coffee or accept a cup off me, except my wife. Villagers here drink water or alcohol, depending on the time of day. Kids love Cola or Sprite or whatever because they watch as well much television, but drink a lot of water.

It is stated that green tea is an anti-oxidant and it is alleged that anti-oxidants help eradicate free radicals which could cause cancer. If this is a fact, then the claims for green tea are maybe more believable.

However, the claims are so all-encompassing that it makes me sceptical. I am reading a report just now that claims that green tea will prevent the formation of cancerous cells in the: “… aesophagus, bladder, on the skin, in the ovaries, the pancreas and the prostate”.

That is a very tall order indeed.

The problem for me with all these claims is that they are not substantiated – there are no references that you can follow that do not lead to businesses selling green tea. This is a difficulty.

Some will say that the government or the pharmaceutical businesses are suppressing the knowledge because they want to sell more expensive drugs – and this may be true – grist to the mill for conspiracy theorists and retailers of Chinese tea.

Now that we seem to be entering into a ‘new era’, a more sceptical and more progressive era (thanks a great deal to the World Wide Web), couldn’t someone do some research on green tea and Acai berries and all the rest of the stuff you read of in your junk emails and put an end once and for all to the false hopes, if that is what they are, that we are being sold every day by unscrupulous advertisers looking for a quick dollar?

Those small, annoying insects, mosquitoes, have always made us run for our lives because they are thought to be carriers of diseases from person to person, animal to animal and from human to animals. How true it is that in Africa alone mosquitoes that kill one child under the age of 5 each 30 seconds, are the foremost cause of infection and account for the greatest number of deaths all over the planet.

The use of mosquito repellents in the manner of mosquito coils, electronic mosquito repellents, mosquito repellent creams, herbal mosquito lotions and plants help keep mosquitoes away. Furthermore, pesticides sprayed on plants could also help.

However some individuals could become allergic to these methods and suffer from allergies of the skin, nasal cavity and throat. So it is highly advisable and environmentally friendly to take into account plants to repel mosquitoes.

Citronella, a plant that gets to a height of two feet, gives an annual bloom of lavender color flowers and finds its position as one of the most well-known mosquitoes repelling plants . You can find these plants usually in places of warm climate. The oil of the citronella plant is used in scents and other herbal products because of their mosquito repelling attributes.

If you love raising marigold of the African and French variety in your garden, you have a mosquito repellent right in your garden. Marigolds, growing to the height of between six inches and three feet, grow well in sunny climates and hates the shade because it slows its growth process. The marigold plant of both the French and African species are able to repel mosquitoes because of the peculiar smell that they have.

Rosemary, a plant that grows up to 4 to 5 feet high, is a highly-rated mosquito repellent. This shrub grows larger than others and has blue flowers. Rosemary, a drought resistant shrub is also used in numerous fish recipes as an ingredient.

In addition, green lemon grass acts as a strong mosquito repellent, because of the citronella oil contained in it. This perennial plant of India and Thailand grows up to a couple of feet high, provides us with lemon grass oil and acts as a pesticide and preservative. The tea manufactured out of lemon grass proves to get very refreshing.

Lavender, the beautiful purple colored plant, not only increases the attractiveness of your backyard, but also repels mosquitoes. This plant is a gardener?s favourite. It grows to a height of four feet, and needs warm weather. The flowers of this plant also find use in bouquets and lavender oil is extracted from it.

Catnip and horse mint, both belonging to the mint family prove to make powerful mosquito repellents. Catnip oil derived from the catnip plant and horse mint with pink bloom also serves as a mosquito repellent.

Garlic the miracle vegetable that is used in recipes also repels mosquitoes. The strong smell of bulbs of garlic assists to ward off mosquitoes. In addition, plants like basil, penny royal, and ageratum are also known for their mosquito repelling qualities.

Hence there is no need to feel that these small creatures can annoy you at their leisure and take control of your life. You can take over their life without using chemical smells or using costly electronic items. It is true that planting mosquito repellent flowers also makes for a beautiful garden.

June 2nd, 2011Vegetarian Cooking

A lot of people think that they just would not have the time to become vegetarians. This is because if you cut the meat out of a standard diet, you will become malnourished. You need to replace the nutrients and vitamins available in meat with the same or similar nutrients and vitamins in other foodstuffs like lentils, beans, pulses, nuts and legumes.

This means that vegetarians need to plan their meals more precisely that meat-eaters, but it does not have to be an obsession. There are fairly simple methods of getting all your mind and body requires.

It is probably factual to say that it is more difficult to plan meals in the correct manner while you first become a vegetarian, but you will soon get the hang of preparing meals that are nutritious and healthy. However, that gets harder and harder, the more foodstuffs that you leave out from your diet.

Some vegetarians will eat fish but some will not; some vegetarians will eat eggs and dairy products, but others will not. The more dedicated the vegetarian the more difficult it is to replace the vitamins that you are lacking by not eating meat.

One manner of looking at how difficult it is to be a vegetarian is by bearing in mind that meat needs to be cooked but fruit and vegetables do not (or not all of them anyway).

Sandwiches are also a very fast vegetarian snack and you should take full advantage of all the different types of bread on the market to vary the flavours and the benefits from the ingredients.

Each cook should understand how to create a casserole and this is also the case for vegetarian cooks. Perhaps the best manner of making a casserole is in a crock pot, so if you have not got one yet, get one as soon as possible. After using your crock pot for a week, you will be wondering how you ever made the time to live without one before.

You can prepare important vegetarian casseroles for your family when you are at work or doing something else and there are thousands of vegetarian crock pot recipes without having to resort to using a meat recipe and only leaving out the meat.

The attraction of a crock pot is that you can prepare all sorts of food in it, not only casseroles. You can create puddings, breads and cakes, but that can become the subject of future articles. The other godsend to the busy cook is the microwave. You can microwave potatoes and other vegetables in minutes instead of roasting them for hours with the meat.

So next time you or someone else says that you do not have time to be a vegetarian, keep in mind that technology has moved on from the Seventies and it is a great deal easier nowadays. There is a lot more known about vegetarianism now and that information is much more widely available – especially over the Internet and there are also better cooking devices like programmable crock pots and microwaves.

Sleep apnea or sleep apnoea is the condition which causes sufferers to stop breathing frequently during sleep. These interruptions can last anything from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. There are three kinds of sleep apnea Central, Obstructive and Mixed or Complex Apnea. Obstructive apnea is by the most common form and it normally comes about in overweight, middle-aged men.

The most frequently recommended method of overcoming obstructive apnea is weight loss, but as this is not simple for most overweight people, the most usual remedy is CPAP, which involves the wearing of an oxygen mask.

The problem with sleep apnea is that the shortage of breath means that the blood and the brain are starved of oxygen. When the level of oxygen in the brain drops to a certain level, it wakes the body up to do something about it. However, the heart normally beats more slowly at night, giving it a rest, but as the oxygen level in the blood drops, the heart will pump harder to send more blood and oxygen to the areas it is most needed.

Another effect is that people suffer from fatigue during the day, which leads to falling asleep at the wheel and accidents at work. In fact, sufferers of apnea are three times more probable to have an accident than normal.

Sufferers of apnea hardly ever wake up when their brain gets them breathing again, but it can be very distressing for their partners. My wife thought that I had died when she first became aware of my difficulty with obstructive sleep apnea and the spluttering back to a state of breathing resembles a drowning man coming up for the second time.

Other problems that can occur after a night of poor sleep are those linked with tiredness: irritability, mood swings, bad concentration, headaches, excessive anxiety, depression, acid reflux, nocturnal sweating, loss of sex drive and elevated heart rate at night.

Most instances of obstructive apnea can be vastly improved by a loss in weight. In fact, a ten percent loss of weight can produce a twenty-five percent improvement in apnea. Moreover, anything that relaxes the muscles should be avoided – especially alcohol. Stopping smoking can help as well.

Mechanical means of improving the condition are raising the head, so that the weight on your neck hangs down towards the chest rather than pressing down on the windpipe. Sleeping on your side can help as well for the same reason.

Black African males and Indian (from India) males are almost twice as much at risk of suffering from apnea as Caucasians. Approximately 4% of Caucasian males and 2% of Caucasian females suffer from sleep apnea. A surprising statistic is that the same percentage of Chinese men and women suffer from apnea as Caucasians. This is startling because the Chinese are not normally as overweight as Caucasians.

The terms ‘apnea’ and ‘apnoea’ are synonymous; the former being the American spelling and the latter being the English spelling.

June 2nd, 2011Gun Safety For Shooters

Most boys and an increasing number of girls like to shoot. Not everyone wants to kill something but that is neither here nor there. The test for shooters is to be able to hit the target whenever required. Gun safety is vital, naturally, because guns can be lethal weapons, but at the end of the day, a gun is only a tool but tools can be used and mis-used.

Guns though are specialized tools, as are all tools actually, but they have such an evocative reputation. Some Individuals are vehemently against them and others uphold their right to hold them in a world where a greater percentage of criminals hold guns than innocent civilians.

Criminals will not toe the line by definition, but for the rest of us gun holders, it is quite important to demonstrate that we are responsible – that we know how to be safe towards others with our firearm. It is a manner of dispelling fear in non-shooters and showing that we are not all red-neck, gung ho idiots.

So, the first law is: always to regard a gun as if it were loaded. You never, ever point a gun at anyone in jest. Many famous individuals have been killed in shooting accidents. OK, often while they were stoned, but ‘being out of it’ is no excuse whatsoever for behaving recklessly. Do not aim a gun at anyone you do not want to threaten – and that means threaten very big time!

There is never, ever any valid excuse for having to aim a gun at anyone in jest or accidentally. When loading a gun, it should be held so that the barrel is pointing away from anyone, even yourself.

If you are asked to pass a gun to someone, either you have to know them well or you do not do it. Whether the gun is loaded or not. The number of times I have been handed a loaded gun is beyond belief and I cannot put it down to my charisma.

If you must show off your gun, unload it in front of your friend and check that it is unloaded in front of your friend. If he or she does not know about guns, at least you are showing how to check the safety of the gun and that you are responsible.

One means of demonstrating or reminding yourself that a gun is safe is to fasten a ribbon to a blank case and put that in the cylinder of a revolver and take the magazine out of a semi-automatic. Always hand a revolver over for viewing with the cylinder flipped out so that the person can establish that the chambers are empty bar the one with the ribbon.

Never, ever play about with guns if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs – it is too easy to make mistakes that can land you in gaol and regretting the incident for the remainder of your life, because the one injured or killed in these circumstances is normally a friend – someone you were having a great time with.

Ovarian cancer that accounts for over 25,000 newly diagnosed cases of cancer every year only in the United States Of America is by and large detected in the later stages once it has already spread outside the ovaries. Ovarian cancer or a group of malignant tumors begin in tissues of different sorts in the ovary.

Most cancers of the ovary start in the epithelial or outer layer of cells, with rarer kinds starting in the egg forming germ cells or the stroma in the ovaries. However it is incorrect to imagine that all tumors and cysts could be cancerous, for non-cancerous or benign tumors are more frequent than cancer of the ovary.

Cancer of the ovary or ovarian cancer is the 7th most common cancer among women in America; with only one out of five cases diagnosed in the early stage when effectual treatment can be implemented. However most women might like to know the danger factors for ovarian cancer and take care to go in for early analysis.

It is a good idea to understand that danger does not mean a certainty, it merely indicates an elevated chance to develop this sort of cancer.

They say that a strong family history of cancer of the breasts, uterus, colon and rectum could expose a woman to cancer of the ovaries also. A family history could include one’s blood relatives like grandmother, mother, daughter or sister, with a family history of cancer at a young age contributing to a higher chance for ovarian cancer. A genetic counselor could suggest genetic tests for you, certain genetic changes indicating an increased risk for cancer of the ovaries.

It is important to note that each woman that has a personal history of cancer and has been already afflicted with cancer of the breast, uterus, colon or rectum stands a higher likelihood to get ovarian cancer.

It is to be noted that cancer has the tendency to spread rapidly and chemotherapy and radiation can just fight or remove cancer for some time. In addition to the development of new cells there is every chance for it to spread to other organs of the body also.

It is true that women that have attained menopause and older women that have never had children have a higher likelihood to develop cancer of the ovaries. Postmenopausal use of hormones like hormone replacement therapy for a period of 10 years and more could increase the likelihood of getting ovarian cancer, with estrogen replacement therapy or ERT having the highest risk followed by estrogen-progestin replacement therapy or EPRT. It is also the case that obesity and use of talcum powder also create a higher risk factor.

The indications of ovarian cancer after it develops to some extent could be pressure with or without pain and bloating experienced in the abdomen, pelvis, back and legs, feeling of nausea with indigestion, flatulence, constipation or diarrhea and a feeling of tiredness most of the time. In rare instances you could experience shortness of breath, the frequent urge to urinate and heavy periods after stoppage of periods.

However it can be hard to diagnose ovarian cancer and the only one who can do it properly is a doctor.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on quite a few subjects, but is now involved with the stages of ovarian cancer. If you want to know more, please visit our web site at Signs and Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer

May 29th, 2011Perilous Dog Treats

Each dog likes getting a tasty tidbit as a treat and each dog-owner likes to give them. But do you know whether the dog treats that you are giving are healthy or dangerous for your pet, because there are both kinds on the market. In fact, there are hundreds of types of dog treats of all sizes, shapes and colours.

No matter what you feed your dog, it is worth checking whether he has eaten it all and if not why not. There could be a number of reasons, but each dog owner ought to know how much their dog normally eats and what he particularly likes. Not eating normally is often a sign that your dog is ill or about to be ill. Some foodstuffs can cause this sign though as well.

Treats that are manufactured to clean your dog’s teeth often come in the shape of a bone, not that that is relevant to the dog, He knows it is not a bone sure enough. But most dogs do like them. A difficult can occur if your dog has powerful jaws and strives to eat big pieces in one go.

These substantial, slightly soggy pieces can get wedged in the throat or intestines resulting in blockages. Often these blockages will dissolve away during a couple of hours, but if they are resulting in breathing worries or discomfort, you might have to take your dog to a vet.

Rawhide chews also fall into this category although they come with problems of their own as well. Rawhide chews are useful for scraping plaque and tartar off your dog’s teeth that would otherwise lead to bacteria, bad teeth and foul breath, but they can also get lodged in the animal’s throat or intestines, so endeavor to purchase pieces that your dog cannot swallow but has to chew on.

Rawhide is an animal by-product, so it has to be preserved to prevent it going rancid. Strive to find out what that preservative is and find out whether it is perilous or not. It has been reported that some countries have been using arsenic to preserve their chews, this is of course not a good idea and is one of the most dangerous dog treats.

Chocolate is poisonous to dogs. Not a lot of adults and very few kids are aware of this, because you frequently see people giving their dog a square of chocolate. The reason these dogs do not die a terrible death is that most of the chocolate that we can purchase these days does not contain much chocolate. It is chocolate-flavoured paste. Look on the list of ingredients on the wrapper of your next bar of chocolate to verify what I mean.

However, different countries have different regulations concerning what can be called chocolate. The European Union is fairly good, America not so decent and Thailand is atrocious. Usually, bakers’ chocolate is the most powerful, which makes a chocolate covered chocolate cake the most dangerous for dogs – just the sort of thing they can steal from the picnic blanket.

Sickness, uneven heartbeat, ‘craziness’, hyperactivity, a visit to the vets for a stomach pump or death are usually the result.

Dogs love bones and they are good for them too (which makes you ask yourself why so many dog chews are purchased). However, not all bones are good for dogs. Cats grind everything up small, which is why they can be safely given fish, chicken and turkey bones. But dogs tend to wolf items down, so never give these bones to your dog.

Fish bones are fine and sharp and can stick in the throat or gut as with humans needing surgery, but chicken and turkey bones splinter into these slender slithers as well when crunched. Do not give them to a dog as a treat.

If you have never had a cat or other pet before, it may come as a revelation to you to find out that they sometimes become ill. Some diseases are hereditary and some are caught, but most are preventable and all are insurable. You can have your cat inoculated against the most prevalent illnesses and you can take out insurance against vet’s fees.

However, besides illnesses, there are other things that can go wrong like injury from fights and worms, fleas and ticks. Worms are easy to cope with. The most widespread cat worms are tapeworms, round worms and hookworms. Cats will get worms because they eat carrion and wild meat. The easiest way to inhibit worms is to give your cat a tablet every six months. Worms are serious and must be taken care of or they may kill your cat.

Cats do a lot of grooming and this means that they end up consuming a lot of fur. This fur forms fur balls in their stomachs. Normally a cat will make itself vomit by eating grass to cough them up, but they may pass into the guts where they may create blockages. This can become serious if they do not go through the cat.

If your cat goes off its food, is constipated or has a painful stomach (does not like to be tickled), it could be a blockage and you ought to take your cat to the vet. You can help your cat out by grooming it frequently to remove loose hair. Most cats like to be groomed with a soft brush or a velvet glove.

Cats suffer from urinary tract infections (UTI’s) exactly like humans do. However, in humans it mostly has an effect on women, it cats it usually affects Toms. You can suspect a UTI if your cat’s urine smells very strong or if it has trouble urinating. If you notice either of these concerns you have to take it to the vet for tablets.

What individuals call feline distemper is not actually distemper – it is panleukopenia which is not even related to canine distemper. It is equally as lethal though and not a lot of cats survive it, although it can take years to actually kill your cat. The safest manner of safeguarding your cat against panleukopenia is to have it vaccinated against panleukopenia when it is a kitten.

Panleukopenia is extremely contagious, so if your cat has it, you should keep it isolated until it dies or have it put down. Panleukopenia is not perilous to humans, but you might carry the virus around with you and even pass it on to your friends’ cats – something that they will not thank you for.

In general, the more time your cat spends out of doors, the more often you ought to take it to the vets for a check up. Once or two times a year ought to be enough. At the check up, you can have your cat checked for parasites, fleas ticks, lesions, infections and panleukopenia and you can pick up your anti-worm tablet at the same time.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on a variety of topics, but is currently concerned with the canine distemper vaccination. If you want to kcurrently more, please go to our website at Distemper Vaccines

May 27th, 2011What Is Sleep Apnea?

I wouldn?t bother so much having my bed partner lie on the sofa in the living room snoring, as I would if he suffered from sleep apnea, a more severe and harmful disorder. This breathing disorder during sleep that is followed by interrupted and shallow breathing can be treated easily provided it is found out in time and not mistaken for normal snoring.

Hence it is best to understand what sleep apnea and its indications are, so we can help a loved one that is suffering from the disorder of sleep apnea.

You have to know that untreated sleep apnea could hinder you having sound sleep at night and make you feel tired, fatigued, mentally exhausted and least productive on the next day. The breathing pauses could last anywhere between 10 to 20 seconds, take place up to 100 times on the same night. This would reduce the quantity of the deep natural sleep that is necessary for the body to function properly physically and mentally during the daytime.

Most of us know the implications of not having a sound night?s sleep and this is no exception for a person with sleep apnea. He/she would suffer from chronic daytime sleepiness, loss of concentration and slow reflexes that could make one have higher risks for accidents.

In addition the long-term results of sleep apnea are serious health disorders like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and weight gain.

Watch out for indications of sleep apnea like loud and chronic snoring, choking, gasping, snorting in sleep and long interruptions in breathing. In addition observe if he/she feels tired and sleepy during the day even after protracted hours of sleep at night.

In addition, look out for dry mouth or sore throat on waking up, morning headaches, restiveness, insomnia, moodiness, irritability or even depression. Waking up feeling restive, forgetful, with a lack of concentration power and frequent trips to the bathroom at night could be other indications.

On noticing these indications consult a specialist. He/she will prescribe an overnight stay in a hospital to observe and diagnose sleep apnea. It is best to understand that just snoring or some of these indications does not lead to a diagnosis of sleep apnea.

Snoring could be just ordinary and it does not interfere with the quality and amount of sleep and make one feel chronically tired, sleepy or lack of concentration, all of which could lead to accidents. However the onus of diagnosing rests with the doctor.

It is a good idea to take into account that sleep apnea could be of various types. In an episode of obstructive sleep apnea, the soft tissues on the back of the throat relax and obstruct oxygen from entering the lungs during sleep and it results in a brief disturbance of sleep.

However, central sleep apnea is less well-known but more grave and takes place when the brain fails to signal the breath regulating muscles to breathe and this could make one conscious than one has woken up. The most serious of sleep apneas is the combination of both these apnea known as complex sleep apnea.

Believe me, sleep apnea could be readily discovered in the early stages with your bed partner?s help. A sleep diary would help him/her record your snoring, gasping, choking, or other unusual sounds. In addition a video recording of the patient would help you note signs of sleep apnea.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on several topics, but is now concerned with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. If you want to know more, please visit our web site at Sleep Apnea Surgery Techniques

Really there is no such medical illness known as ?throat cancer?, although several sorts of cancer can arise in the throat and neck. The proper medical term for the throat is the ?pharynx?, which can be defined as: ‘the passage that ensures that food and drink go to the stomach and air to and from the lungs’.

The pharynx is made up of three parts: the oropharynx (the back of the mouth, including the soft palate and back of the tongue); nasopharynx (connecting the back of the nose to the back of the mouth); laryngopharynx (connecting the oropharynx and nasopharynx to the start of the gullet (oesophagus) and the windpipe (trachea) via the voice box (larynx)).

The laryngopharynx is sometimes called the hypopharynx. ?Throat cancer? can be cancer of any of these, although the most common kind of ?throat cancer? is nasopharyngeal cancer.

Just to render the term ?throat cancer? even more useless and puzzling, some individuals apply it to cancer of the thyroid gland (situated at the front of the base of the neck), cancer of the voice box (larynx), cancer of the gullet or cancer of the windpipe (trachea), which actually falls into the lung cancer group.

Most head and neck cancerous cells are squamous, which is to say that they do not travel far from their origin, although they often have an impact on the lymph nodes. In fact, the first symptom of head or throat cancer is frequently an enlarged neck lymph node, which is also occasionally called throat cancer.

A different sign could be the manifestation of white patches or spots in the mouth that will not respond to treatment. Known as leukoplakia, 33% of them become cancerous. It is estimated that 7,000 Americans die of a throat cancer each year, often because it was detected late. Ethnicity might also play a part, since African American men are 50% more at risk of throat cancer than Caucasian men.

These cancers are quite painless in early stages and can be confused with toothache, earache, sore throat or croakiness. When established however, they develop very quickly, although if caught at an early stage, they can nearly always be effectively removed.

There is a wide variety of reasons why someone can be at a greater danger for a throat cancer, including smoking; chewing tobacco and other things, such as betel nut, gutkha, marijuana or pan; excessive alcohol consumption; poor diet resulting in vitamin deficiencies (worse if this is caused by substantial alcohol intake); weakened immune system; asbestos exposure; prolonged exposure to wood dust or paint fumes; exposure to petroleum, industrial chemicals, and being more than the age of 55 years.

The existence of acid reflux disease (gastroesphogeal reflux disease – GERD) or larynx reflux disease can also be a major factor. In the case of acid reflux disease, stomach acids flow up into the oesophagus and injure its lining, making it more prone to throat cancer.

Because successful therapy depends on early detection, regular oral examination is suggested. Your dentist will have been trained to be on the look out for early symptoms, making a bi-annual visit to the dentist even more rewarding

When people leave school or higher education, they tend to think that the learning part of their lives is behind them and that it is time to put that knowledge to decent use to create some money and have a family. There are exceptions to this model, of course, lots of them, but most people merely quit learning and start working. Some jobs demand that the person doing the work goes on courses and keeps abreast of developments, but most do not.

Unfortunately, the part of the brain that learns, the medulla oblongata, needs continuous stimulation, otherwise it tends to hibernate and each time it goes into hibernation it gets more difficult to wake it up.

Therefore, it is decent advice to keep learning. Hobbies require constant learning and so do educational toys and puzzles. ‘Use it or lose it’ is an apt saying with regard to one’s ability to learn.

Everyone has to solve problems every day, but these problems are not the same ones that our brains need to remain active. We tend to solve issues in our daily lives without having to think too much or having to do any study. Examples of the types of educational toys and puzzles that are beneficial are crossword puzzles, word games and sudoku.

These educational toys and puzzles are in most of the daily newspapers but some are simple and others are hard. If you purchase a newspaper in which the puzzles are fairly easy, either switch to another newspaper or buy mind games and puzzles books of the level that still challenge you.

This is the second-best approach though, it is better to have the puzzles in the newspaper that you read everyday and carry around with you so that the mind puzzles are there with you whenever you need them.

However, there are other types of mind games and puzzles that you might prefer. There are hundreds of portable games machines that you can put in your pocket or bag to be played in your dinner break or whilst travelling.

I am not thinking about ‘shoot em ups’ here, but instead portable chess machines, which permit you to play either the machine or another human.

However, you may not like chess, but you may like draughts (checkers), or any of the dozens of other board games and card games, like bridge, that have been ‘computerized’.

On a different level, there are hobbies that can produce the correct type of mind puzzle to keep your mind stimulated. Programming is one, mathematics is another. Astronomy or bridge are others.

If your child goes through a phase of illness and you are concerned that he or she might be lacking stimulation, Lego could be a solution. Lego is suitable for all age groups from babies using larger blocks to teenagers utilizing computer-controlled motors.

There are loads of educational toys and puzzles for individuals of all ages, in fact there have never been so many, so just go down to the mall and choose one out for yourself or your loved one.

Lego sets have come a long way since my brothers and I had Lego sets in the UK. Lego UK is an off-shoot of the original Danish company known as Lego, however, Lego UK may just as well be considered a separate firm in its own right. Nowadays Lego sets are a lot more than only boxes of interlocking building blocks, Lego sets are themed now to make them more relevant to a child’s particular interests. Lego is seeing a resurgence.

The name ‘Lego’ is not a genuine word, not even in Danish. Rather it is an acronym of two Danish words “leg godt”, which mean “play well”. It is Lego Group’s name and part of the logo of the Lego Group.

The Lego Group was the brain child of Ole Kirk Kristiansen in 1932 and the Lego company has remained in the Kristiansen family’s hands until today. The current owner of the Lego Group is Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a grandchild of the company’s founder.

Lego’s mission statement is the same the whole Lego Group worldwide and that is to:

?Inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow?

Lego UK explains this by saying that their ultimate aim is ‘to inspire and develop children to think creatively, reason systematically and release their potential to shape their own future – experiencing the endless human possibility’.

The Lego Group now has over 130 subsidiaries and branches all over the world, one of which is Lego UK. From its unassuming beginnings in a small Danish carpentry workshop in Bilund, the Lego Group has evolved into the fifth largest toy manufacturer in the world, although it is still based in Bilund.

The fundamental building block of the Lego Group is the famous eight-stud Lego block, which has remained unchanged since 1958. In fact, it is unlikely to ever change since it has been calculated that there are over 900 million different methods of mixing just six of these blocks together.

More than 900 million different methods of combining just six Lego building blocks of one size and one colour! Think about the possibilities if you give a child a box of Lego building blocks of different sizes and colours.

Lego takes education very seriously and since the Seventies, the Lego Group has extended its product assortment to include younger and older people, The Duplo block is for pre-school children and are large enough for small hands to manipulate and too substantial to swallow.

For older children, teenagers and adults, there are electric motors that can be incorporated into models which can be controlled by computer. One well-known British TV presenter contacted Lego for help in constructing a house from Lego to live in.

In fact, this full-size, twenty foot tall, house was built by 1,000 volunteers using 3,300,000 bricks and everything is manufactured from Lego building blocks. Yes, everything, including a flushing toilet, a sink with taps, the cat and the bread bin.

We are fortunate in the West, or most of it anyway, because the European Community, north America and Canada have strict laws on how safe kids’ toys must be. In spite of this, there are lots of deceitful importers about who will import cheap junk toys that could be dangerous to children, which means that anyone purchasing kids’ toys has to have their wits about them.

Having said that, the larger stores do do their best to weed out the rogue suppliers and in fact most of the unsafe children’s toys are found out about before they go on sale. Be cautious in discount shops and outdoor markets though.

Once you get your safe children’s toys home, the time to be wary starts. This is because most accidents in the home involving toys do not happen to the person that the toys were purchased for. This is because adults trip over them. The stairs are the worst

The first thing that anyone buying toys must look for is the label. In the United States this is called the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) and in Europe it is known as the Certificat European (CE). However, be cautious, because these labels can be forged very easily.

If you are not used to buying toys for children, the next indicator to look for is the age range for which the toy is intended. In general the marker will give 5+ or 7-12, so you still have to exercise some judgment.

Educational toys are important to children and one of the best of these that you can build on as the child grows older is Lego. Duplo is the form of Lego that is most suitable to very young children. This is because Duplo building blocks are larger that the regular Lego building blocks so that small hands can manage them easily.

One of the worst risks for very young children is choking. Young children put everything into their mouths but Lego has manufactured these Duplo building blocks too large to swallow.

As your child gets older, you can add to the Lego set right up to adulthood. There are Lego electric motors for teenagers and there are numerous adults that have continued using Lego well past their Twenties.

If however your child does have an accident with a toy, you must attempt to find out how it happened immediately after seeing to your child. If the accident was obviously the child’s fault or someone else’s, you can report it if you like, but if the difficulty came about because of a difficulty or failure inherent in the toy, you should report it.

The first place to report the toy is to the local council and then you must inform the manager of the shop where you bought it from. Keep the toy until the wheels of bureaucracy turn enough to get around to you

They will get back to you and you might save other children and their parents from going through the same problems that you did.

Mosquitoes have caused various life threatening diseases in tropical countries such as India particularly during the monsoons. These small creatures carry disease causing viruses which cause malaria, filaria and dengue fever from one person to the other, from one animal to the other and from animal to human and vice versa.

It is good to note that mosquito repellents help to stave off mosquitoes for a short time depending on the body sort, climatic conditions and state of the body, but can never obliterate them fully.

You could have a wide assortment of mosquito repellents, but not all of them might prove suitable and perfect for your infant. The choice varies between synthetic chemicals and plant derivatives that are found in the form of creams, lotions, sprays, wipes, roll-on sticks, foams, liquid vaporizers, sprays, coils, and mats. In addition, you can get electronic items that depend on electromagnetic fields and ultrasound waves to repel mosquitoes.

Your choice of the best repellent depends entirely on your baby?s requirements and the precautions that need to be taken. It is best to check with your child?s pediatrician or a dermatologist that could suggest the best mosquito repellent.

Pediatricians advise avoiding the use of mosquito repellent creams and lotions on children under the age of six months as these chemicals could result in allergic and toxic reactions when applied directly to the baby?s skin.

However, it is advised that if you have to use a cream or lotion it is best to check with your child specialist and then put the repellent to the child?s clothes being sure you avoid areas where the child could stick it in its mouth.

The use of liquid vaporizers, coils, sprays, and foams are highly unadvisable as they could result in breathing allergies and other issues in your baby. In case you should, take your baby in when the fumes are given off.

The use of baby mosquito nets and natural or herbal remedies are safer until the infant is older. Try lighting citronella candles to ward off mosquitoes in your baby’s room.

It is worth mentioning that essential oils like margosa, citronella, peppermint, and eucalyptus can help ward off mosquitoes, however it is inadvisable to apply these oils immediately on the skin as they are strong.

However putting a couple of drops on the bedding would be useful. Mopping the floors with a couple of drops of essential oils added to the water would help and prove safe also.

Prevention would be better rather than repelling mosquitoes particularly for children. Maintaining a clean home and avoiding stagnant water standing in coolers, flowerpots, open drains, small ponds, bird baths, pets’ utensils and other bodies of water and adding a couple of drops of paraffin oil in the water would prevent mosquitoes multiplying.

In addition, make sure your child does not perspire when you leave it unsupervised, for mosquitoes breed in moisture. It is best to dress your baby in light coloured clothes fully covering the body, which would also help inhibit mosquito bites.

Furthermore, avoiding strong fragrances in the form of lotions, soap, oils or floral scented perfumes or room fresheners would help preclude the attraction of mosquitoes. Also, storing food covered over always will help prevent the breeding of mosquitoes.

Last but most important, fix wire mesh and screens on all doors and windows and keep them closed all the time especially at dawn and dusk and help your baby breathe fresh air but with freedom from mosquitoes.

May 19th, 2011Jack Russell Terriers

If you are looking for a canine companion, you ought to put the Jack Russell terrier on your shortlist. Some of the best traits about the Jack Russell terrier is that they are small, inexpensive to feed, active, short-haired and intelligent. The Jack Russell terrier is a ideal dog for an older person, or someone living in an apartment.

The original Jack Russells were bred by a young theology student named John Russell studying at Oxford University in the early 19th. Century. It is believed that John Russell liked the appearance of his milkman’s dog and used it for breeding. The dog, a bitch called Trump was white and had patches of brown coloured hair on its eyes and ears.

Terriers are small, dynamic dogs. The name ‘terrier’ comes from the Latin word ‘terra’ meaning ‘earth’, because terriers like to dig and go to ground whilst hunting. Terriers have been used to hunt all types of small animals such as rats, moles, badgers, foxes and rabbits. The Jack Russell descends from fox terriers.

Jack Russell terriers love to run and dig, so they will encourage their owners to go for regular walks and they have a very persuasive personality. The word ‘dogged’ could have been taken from them – they simply do not give up!

Because of all their digging and rooting around, they can get pretty muddy which means bathing and grooming, although being short-haired animals, this is not a problematic task.

Nowadays, hunting with animals is banned in many countries, but this dog’s nature is still to hunt. They are particularly good ratters and can clear up an infestation of rats in short time. They are therefore also good dogs to keep on a farm or substantial garden where rodents could be a difficulty.

Terriers also make very reliable guard dogs. They will protect your property in the garden or in your home. They are very territorial and, although they will not usually molest or bite strangers, they will definitely let you know that there is a stranger around.

Having said that, it is a wise thing to train your dog. If you are not sure how to do this or what to teach it, go to dog training groups or buy a book. Jack Russell terriers are very intelligent and love dealings with their masters, so they learn quickly and readily if you start them young enough, because they are also fairly strong-willed dogs.

I have heard stories of Jack Russell terriers allowing strangers into a building but not allowing them to leave without being told to. This seems like a great way of catching burglars.

These dogs make great family pets, but they do not always get on with other dogs that they are not living with. This can lead to fighting and injuries.

Apart from injuries in fights, Jack Russells enjoy pretty good health. They are not subject to any major illnesses like some other breeds are. They also live a long time frequently reaching 13 and fifteen with some Jack Russell terriers reaching 18, 19 and even 20 years of age.

May 19th, 2011Buying Your First Ferret

If you want to buy a ferret for the first time, it is probably best to purchase it from a breeder. This is because, if you create a friend of the breeder you can ring up for guidance at any time, whereas if you buy from a pet shop, the vendor or the shop assistant may not know much about them.

Ferrets take a lot of taking care of. They need more attention than a cat or even a dog and while most individuals can muddle through taking care of a cat or a dog, you have to learn how to take care of a ferret.

Look on line or in Yellow Pages for a ferret breeder in your region and go along on the spur of the moment, unexpected. In that manner, you will see what the ferret farm is really like, not something spruced up for your visit. If it is dirty or smelly, look for another one.

You can buy a ferret at any age, as you can with dogs, but most individuals like to purchase a baby and train it themselves. Young ferrets have limited distance sight, so you have to keep their environment clean and safe to avoid injury to their eyes or other parts.

In order to help keep their cage tidy, you ought to toilet-train your ferret and in order to keep your house clean you ought to make it ferret-proof to prevent ferrets entering your home and literally wrecking it.

A ferret costs around $100, but you will also require a cage, litter box, toys and vaccinations. You may require a license to own a ferret where you live, but the breeder will be able to counsel you on that. A vaccination against distemper might or might not be needed by law, but it is a very good idea if you cherish your pet.

If you know nothing about ferrets, the first thing to look for is the eyes. The eyes should be bright and the animal should be alert. Look out for distemper which can manifest itself in dull eyes, lethargy, runny nose and dull coat. you want a hyperactive ferret because that is what ferrets are like – very hyperactive.

Ferrets sleep a great deal. Perhaps 18 hours a day, but when they wake up, they are full of beans and need lots of exercise. They need to run about, forage and hunt. Ferrets feed on live birds by preference, but they will take other food as well. Make sure that this food is sugar-free and is high in protein

There are toys that you can supply your ferret with to amuse itself, but these are no surrogate for real exercise. However, herein lies the problem, because ferrets are fast and climb trees, so if you have not taught it to come if called, you might never see it again after you open the cage.

Teach your ferret to respond to a name or whistle by rewarding it when it does come as you would a puppy and bathe the animal every now and again as you would a dog.

Melanoma is the most common form of skin cancer and skin cancer is the most widespread kind of cancer in the Western world. It starts in skin cells called melanocytes.

Melanocytes are found under the skin, which is made up of two layers: the epidermis on the outside and the dermis below that. To be precise, melanocytes are found in the lowest levels of the epidermis, but not really in the dermis.

These cells produce melanin, which has an effect on the epidermis? pigmentation, both natural skin colour and because of exposure to the sun as in tanning.

Sometimes, a group of near-by melanocytes combine with a little local tissue to form a mole (also called a nevus; plural nevi). The average person has between ten and forty moles, which normally seem before the fortieth birthday. They frequently fade or disappear with age.

Moles are non-malignant (non-cancerous) and can be flat or raised in shape and almost any colour. Normally, they are slightly darker than one?s natural skin colour. Dark skinned individuals are likely to have more moles.

Cancer starts in cells where the normal cycle of decay and replacement by regeneration has been Upset. Under these conditions, cells do not always die when they ought to and new cells are produced needlessly.

This, in turn, creates a growth (also known as a tumor), which can be either benign or malignant (that is to say cancerous or non-cancerous).

Benign tumors can be surgically removed and hardly ever come back. They do not spread or affect surrounding tissue.

Malignant tumors are cancerous and can affect surrounding tissue and organs. In these cases, cancerous cells can break away from the primary tumor and affect other organs or enter the blood stream (lymphatic system), whereby it will spread to other parts of the body (metastasis) quite quickly. The incidence of metastasis is a deciding issue in how a physician deals with cancer.

Melanoma happens when melanocytes become malignant. It can happen at any age, but the chances increase with age. Fair-skinned individuals are more likely to develop it than dark-skinned individuals. In fair-skinned races, men tend to get it on the torso and neck, whereas women get it on their calves (lower legs).

Dark-skinned individuals seldom suffer from melanoma, but if they do, it is normally under the finger and toe nails or on the soles of the feet or palms of the hands. When cancerous cells from melanoma enter the lymphatic system and have an effect on other organs, it is still attributed to melanoma. For example, if the liver becomes affected by cancerous cells from melanoma, it is referred to as metastatic melanoma, not liver cancer.

Often, the first indication of melanoma is a change in the size, shape, colour, or feel of an current mole, although it frequently first manifests itself with a new mole or moles. Self-diagnosis is not to be relied on – always seek professional advice if you have any problems relating to your skin. However, it is wise to bear in mind ?The ABCD of Melanoma?, which goes like this:

Asymmetry: the outline of one half of the mole is not the same as the other side.

Border: the border or edges of the mole are not clearly defined; a bit ragged or the colouration ?leaks? into the surrounding skin.

Colouration: the mole is not uniformly of one colour, although it is not so vital what that colour is.

Diameter: there is a transformation in size or a new mole grows larger than 5mm in size.

By around the 1700′s, the Isle of Skye and other highland areas in Scotland were already breeding lots of small terriers. Scottish breeds were divided into two sorts: the Skye terriers and the Dandie Dinmont terriers.

The Dandie Dinmonts were classed as a single breed, whereas the Skyes were deemed to include the Scotties, the Cairns and the West Highland White Terriers also called Westies.

West Highland White Terriers were hybrids of crossed Cairns, Scotties and Dandies terriers. These hybrids were expected to be decent hunters and loyal. In fact, many members of the Scottish royal family owned terriers that were very much like the Westies of today.

One folktale concerns a Westie that stopped a mother from constantly yelling at her daughter. Each time the mother yelled at her teenage daughter, the Westie would bark at the mother. The dog’s aggression got to such a degree over the years that the mother gave up yelling at her daughter.

It turned out that the girl was stroking and rewarding the dog for his protection after every bawling out from her mother. lots of people would say that the daughter was able to help her mother to change her violent ways although she was also helping herself by rewarding the dog for its actions.

West Highland White Terriers can live in or outdoors, so are very adaptable. They have a wiry coat of roughly two inches in thickness covering a dense fur coat which is capable of keeping them warm. Westies are in essence small dogs of between 10 and 12 inches in height and 13 and 22 pounds in weight.

West Highland White Terriers like to dig and bark, but they also like company. They like well-behaved children and they like to run after cats. They defend their property and territory enthusiastically.

As a breed, they can suffer some diseases such as: chronic skin problems, Perthe’s disease (hip problems), jawbone calcification, cranio-mandibular osteopathy (lion jaw), patella luxation, a disorder in the kneecap, liver ailments, deafness and congenital heart disease

However, there are steps that you can take to look after your Westie. For example, they ought to be brushed regularly using a brush with stiff bristles. You should bathe them only when necessary, but their whole coat ought to be shaved at least twice a year and trimmed each four months. The fur around the eyes and ears ought to be trimmed as well.

Records swow that in 1620, King James 1 requested some small white dogs from Argyleshire, Scotland. Colonel Malcolm, who was thought to be the originator of Poltalloch terriers, that are very similar to the Westies of today, unintentionally shot his dark terrier. From then on he vowed to have just white terriers.

In the 19th Century, terriers that were very similar to the Westies were known as Roseneath terriers in honour of the Duke of Argyle’s interest and patronage of this breed. Roseneath was the name of his estate at Dumbartonshire.

In the first ever dog show, put on in the late 1800′s, the Westies were called White Scottish Terriers. In 1904, they were reclassified as West Highland White Terriers.

During the mid-1900′s, breeders of the Cairns in Argyle picked white puppies from the stock and interbred them to obtain white Cairns. However, in 1917, the American Kennel Club ruled that Cairns could be listed if they have the Westies’ lineage.

Until approximately a hundred years ago in the West, people only had recourse to renewable energy for heat and light for their homes. They burnt wood and sometimes coal or peat (OK, fossil fuels) and got up when the sun came up and went to bed with the sun too. In, fact a large part of the world’s population still lives like that.

Things changed with mechanized industry and night shifts. Electricity providers sold the populace on being able to do more instead of just sleeping when it got dark, and the Western population got hooked on buying huge amounts of energy, mostly electricity and engine fuel, which was usually produced from oil and coal.

This idea soon travelled around the world and with rising prosperity came emulation and other countries wanted the same. Now we are in the sad situation where we have to confess that we rode the fossil fuel gravy train to its terminus without thinking about what we would utilize when fossil fuels ran out.

This is where the typical citizen comes in. You have to think about how you want to draw energy in the future. Do you want to be powered by keeping sucking unrenewable resources out of the planet, or do you want to have as little to do with it as you can? Would you rather have everything you have now, but know that the resources that are powering your lifestyle are renewable?

If, like millions of others around the world, you would rather say ‘No!’ to traditional power production methods, then you have to take a stand. But not only in words, you really have to do some something about it physically.

This will mean investing a lot of money up front, which might not be a problem for you or you may even think that taking a stand is worth looking for a bank loan. These are admirable sentiments, but I would like to propose that there is another way to self-sufficiency.

You could make your own!

Why not? The technology has been around for decades and is pretty straightforward. Most moderately capable teenagers can assemble a bank of photovoltaic cells into a solar panel and then plug that into your home’s electrical system. And if a teenager can manage it, so can you. All you (and the teenager) will need is a solar panel kit and a schematical diagram. A plan in other words.

A solar panel kit can be bought in your neighbourhood from a Do-It-Yourself store or from the Internet. A typical solar panel will take a few hours to put together and will produce 100 watts of electrical energy. The electricity produced from these panels is then passed through an inverter that changes the current from DC to AC, making it usable by household appliances and the utility grid.

Do yourself and the planet a good turn, get off the grid and start saving money and the planet’s resources, you will be surprised how easy it is once you get going. And do not forget, you can do it in stages of, say, one 100 watt panel a month until you hit self-sufficiency. It is not a question of ‘All or Nothing’.

Lego keyrings are a bright notion from the Lego Group and Lego UK. Lego keyrings are meant to be amusing, yet convenient items for the Lego enthusiast both young and old. Some of the Lego keyrings can be difficult to get and are encouraging collectors to begin a collection.

You can purchase Lego keyrings on websites or at almost any Lego shop. There are tens of different types ranging from simple coloured building blocks to Lego Star Wars characters and they are not expensive either.

Lego has been very smart with their keyrings because they are convenient little presents for all ages. They are fun items, they do not cost over a couple of pounds or dollars and the numbers manufactured of some of them are really quite small ensuring a healthy secondary market for collectors on Net auction sites such as eBay.

At the moment there are about four dozen different Lego keyrings ranging from a simple, traditional, red Lego building block with eight stubs to Darth Vader from the Lego Star Wars figures assortment.

If you want to begin a collection of Lego keyrings, go to one of the Lego retailers on the Net to see what is obtainable and then go to eBay to find out what has already come and gone. You might be amazed at how a keyring that was purchased last year for a few pounds has trebled in value by now.

The most well-liked of the Lego keyrings are the small figurines. There are policemen, firemen, teachers, postmen, nurses, GP’s, spacemen, Batman, Lego Star Wars figures, Lego Harry Potter figures. All kinds, in fact.

Some of the Lego keyrings are just sold in sets and some are sold at a cheaper cost if bought in a set. There is a huge second market on eBay for the new Lego characters and the older ones as well, so if you are interested in starting a new hobby purchasing and selling Lego figures, have a look in a Lego shop on the Internet for special offers and discounted deals.

If on the other hand, you are not too interested in the Lego keyrings but would still like to be in on the action, you could check out the secondary market in Lego figures. Lego figures can be purchased separately, but they usually come in a package as with the Lego Star Wars figures or the Harry Potter sets.

One suggestion is that these figures are normally relatively costly, whereas the keyrings are not, so you could purchase the Lego keyring of the figure you would like and cut the keyring part off. This is an excellent method of building up your group of Lego characters at a fraction of the normal price and the only difference is that you cannot remove the arms and legs from the keyring figures like you can from the dearer other type.

Why would you want to take the arms and legs off anyway? They can only get lost or damaged by removing them. No, go for the Lego keyrings instead.

May 17th, 2011Stress Headaches

We all have headaches from time to time, but do you know why you get those headaches? If you merely get a headache from time to time, once every couple of of weeks or so, it is not much of a problem, but if you dread your next headache, then you almost certainly do have a problem.

Tension headaches are the most common and tension can be similar to stress, but there are also purely stress-related headaches. This type of headache can also be driven off by a tablet or two from the medicine cabinet, but it is better to get rid of the cause for the headache. Attack the reason not the symptom. The remainder of this piece is about what to do with the different sorts of stress headaches.

Basically, a stress headache occurs once the obstacles that are presented to you engulf your ability to cope with them. Some people get on well with stress others deal with stress less well. Some people even prosper on it and others have taught themselves how to de-stress rapidly.

When a person comes across stressful situations, a little bit of our mental resistance against stress is worn away. This is fine and is normal, but then as other stresses happen there is less and less defence left to carry on. Trying to cope whilst you are starting to feel weaker and weaker will often bring on a stress headache.

A different reason why a stress headache is the most common kind of headache, is because other forms of headache can bring on a stress headache too. The good news is that almost all forms of headaches can be prevented or cured and a stress headache falls into this category.

There are, naturally pharmaceutical treatments to treat headaches and there are natural, home remedies as well but there are also non-medicinal ways of treating a stress headache. These other ways include: cognitive therapy, behavioural therapy and physical therapy.

These methods can be studied from books, night school classes, the local library, the Internet or by arrangement with your clinic or physician. It is well-worth learning how to use these techniques because taking drugs or treatments can lead to headaches as well.

Cognitive Therapy: seeks to ‘redirect’ stress headaches. In this method, the patient is taught to recognize what begins the stress symptoms and what the onset of a stress headache feels like. Then they are taught how to alter their response to these conditions.

Behavioural Therapy: is a method of changing your life style to prevent the incidence of a stress headache. For instance, numerous individuals reach for comfort foods or alcohol once they get stressed, but it might be better for you to do something else, |when you feel a stress headache coming on.

Physical Therapy: tries using bio-feedback responses, so that when a stress headache starts, the sufferer strives using relaxation techniques (perhaps yoga) in order to reduce their stress and possibly prevent the stress headache from occurring. Meditation, deep breathing and prayer are some of the other techniques that can be tried.

Are you an anime toy collector or do you just comprehend how well-liked they are? Well, the fact is that because they are so well-liked with both children and collectors alike, some individuals are making a lovely living out of trading anime toys both on and off line. Making money from your hobby is both fun and pretty easy, if you know what you are doing. It is certainly possible for you to turn a profit from them too.

There are prerequisites to earning money from any hobby and trading in anime toys is no exception. You have to actually immerse yourself in the toys and know which ones are difficult to buy and which ones are the most well-liked with enthusiasts. You can acquire this knowledge by reading, yet to be truthful, if you do not already know it, you are probably not interested enough.

If you are not au fait with anime toys, try applying these principles to what you are interested in. Anyway, returning to anime. There are comics, books and films that you ought to be familiar with before you can have enough information to begin trading. You need to know the characters and also their personalities.

The easiest manner to begin is if you sell what you already have. If you have looked after them, they could be worth quite a lot of money otherwise they will attract a reduced price. This is not necessarily a difficulty. Sell all your old tat and use that money to buy the most popular examples of anime toys that you can afford, but buy it ‘as new’ and boxed in its original carton.

The top collectors will only buy ‘new unused’ in its original packaging, so this is the level that you have to aim for. Anything that is second best, unless it is very rare is a waste of time and is only good enough for children to play with. Real collectors just invest in the best – think of coins and stamps.

By selling off your old anime toys, you can achieve a couple of objectives: you will be ‘clearing the decks’ but also furnishing yourself with start-up capital. Frequently, it is a lack of start up capital that stops people from ‘having a go’. If it does not cost you anything other than your old toys, which I am sure you will have already grown out of, if you are thinking about dealing in them, you will not be speculating with your own money really.

The way to start is to sell your old stuff in order to acquire start up capital and then use your specialist knowledge to purchase anime toys that are only in the very best state. Then you work your way up the ladder until you are buying ang selling off line locally or further afield at toy fayres but also on line, say on eBay, in only the very best examples of anime toys. Stick with it and you can make money, if you are passionate about your subject.

Most people find that having a baby is a breathtaking experience and they look forward to the glad event with great pleasure. There is a huge amount to learn on the subject of having and taking care of a baby, so the learning curve is very steep on the first baby.

Parents get help with the birth of their children, but frequently they are left to discover how to take care of them by themselves. One of the things that you will have to think of when taking care of your new-born besides bottles, feeding, bathing and disease-control is bedding since new-born babies spend a lot of time asleep.

Cot death is a concern for parents because no-one really knows why babies die a cot death. Therefore, the priority when choosing bedding is safety. Comfort is second, you still would like your baby to be comfortable in order for it to get a good sleep.

Modern theory on cot death or SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) attributes it to excessively soft bedding, so it is important to get bedding that is neither too soft nor too rough. This relates to the mattress, pillows and blankets.

Overly-soft bedding might permit the baby’s face to sink into it, which could cause the baby to suffocate. Even if the baby does not suffocate, it could cause the baby to breathe too much carbon dioxide for too long which might cause brain damage.

The first thing to look out for is the fit. The mattress, pillow and blankets should fit the width and length of the cot so that the baby cannot fall into a gap, which would impede breathing.

There are a number of kinds of baby beds and it is a problem to work out which is which as a great deal of advertisers use the terms indiscriminately. However, the terms are: bassinet, cradle, crib and cot. Some of these devices have high sides to prevent the baby from getting or falling out and others can be rocked back and fore, usually from side to side.

The foremost thing to remember, whatever sort of bed you use for your baby is that all the bedding must fit it well. Being too big and curling up at the edges for the baby to squash up against is just as bad as being too small and creating gaps for the baby to fall into where it can suffocate.

Cotton is the best fabric to have the bedding manufactured from, because it is airy, it permits the baby’s body to breathe. It is also easy to keep clean. One interesting thing here is that modern doctors recommend that the fabrics used for the baby’s bedding should be patterned with bright colours.

What is the purpose of this? Well, the reasons are that children react better to primary colours (yellow, blue and red) and that patterns, such as flowers or animals, will give the child something to concentrate on, stimulating the development of the eyes, the brain and recognition.

Safety is a very important aspect of snow boarding not just to avoid injury to yourself but also to ensure the safety of innocent spectators. Snow boarding safety ought to become the prime concern for all snow boarders, because it is considered an extreme sport and therefore more hazardous than average.

So, in the interests of safety for snow boarders and their fans, I have put a number of safety tips together below.

The first thing to do is to check the quality of the snow board. Look for damage and particularly cracks and splits. The board comes under a lot of stress while in use and you do not need it to disintegrate when you are travelling at speed.

When inspecting the board, check that it is the correct size for you – in other words, is there adequate room for you to put your feet on it comfortably? Using the correct size board will allow you to exercise your skill without impediment.

After making certain that the snow board is good enough, you ought to make certain that you have the right protective clothing. One obvious concern is staying warm and another is being able to see where you are going. When you are travelling at high speeds, small flecks of snow and debris can be very painful and even blind you temporarily, so make sure that you are wearing protective goggles.

However, the goggles should be of a sufficient safety level, say, polycarbonate, and must also offer UV protection – UVa, UVb and UVc, if possible. Oakley make safety glasses and goggles of this type.

Make sure that your underwear is warm and then it will not matter too much what outer clothing you put on as long as it is waterproof and tear-resistant. Make sure that you are well padded, so that whenever you take that predestined fall, there is less chance of you breaking bones.

Next, ensure that your inner body is sufficiently maintained. Exercising in the snow and staying warm necessitates the expenditure of energy, so be certain that you have some. While it is not recommended that you eat heartily immediately before exercising for fear of cramps, you do have to have consumed something with calories in it and you should make certain that your body is adequately hydrated.

Think about taking some emergency supplies with you too. Snow boarding is a dangerous sport so it is quite possible that you could suffer a bad fall and have to wait for an emergency rescue, which can take a time and the weather could turn foul, so have some energy-rich chocolate or cereal bars on your person. You can eat snow to produce water, yet you might want to take a litre of water with you anyway.

And last, but not least, take a cell phone with you – one that has GPS, so that you can accurately phone your location to the rescue services if you have to.

The medical phrase for breast cancer is ‘malignant breast neoplasm’. Breast cancer originates most frequently in the inner lining of the milk ducts or the lobules that provide the ducts with milk. The general term for cancers that originate in ducts is ‘ ductal carcinomas’ and the term for cancers originating from the lobules is ‘lobular carcinomas’.

Successful treatment depends hugely on the kind of cancer, staging and the age of the patient, however the figures vary from 10% to 98%. Worldwide, malignant breast neoplasm accounts for just over 10% of all cancers in women, which makes it the second most frequent form of cancer in women after skin cancer.

In 2004 (the latest figures accessible at the moment), breast cancer caused almost 520,000 deaths worldwide, which is 7% of all deaths by cancer and 1% of all deaths. One more interesting statistic is that women are 100 times more likely to get breast cancer than men, but women have a far greater likelihood of recovery (usually due to more frequent screening).

October has been nominated as ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month’ and the symbol used (not only in October) is the ‘Pink Ribbon’. It has become a global symbol of breast cancer awareness.

However, some firms have been criticized for putting the pink ribbon on the labels of their products (see Kentucky Fried Chicken and some alcoholic drinks). The lesson to be learned is to check out how much that firm really donates to malignant breast neoplasm awareness and research.

If Breast Cancer Awareness month is to do any good, the one thing it ought to concentrate on is making women aware that this form of cancer is not a death sentence, because if it can be treated early the survival rate is very high. Even cancers that have been diagnosed ‘a little late’ can be treated successfully although the treatment will probably be much more harsh.

All women should go for regular screening by a professional – at least once a year – but they should also learn how to test their breasts themselves and get into the habit of doing the self-test each day whilst washing in the shower. You could also get a friend to lend a hand by incorporating it into foreplay.

The knowledge necessary for self-testing is widely accessible all year round (not only in October) at your doctor’s surgery or at your gynecologist’s. It is also available in libraries, clinics, some schools and on Internet. One of the foremost factors that you ought to take in to account when deciding on your plan for counteracting the threat of cancer is whether any other members of your family have had breast cancer or any other kind of cancer for that matter.

One anxiety that numerous people in the know have is that breast cancer research is receiving too high a proportion of the total funding for cancer research. This means that more patients are dying of other types of cancer than should be.

Vegetarians are fond of animals as well – they just do not eat them. Or perhaps that is why they do not eat them. Whatever! There is an issue that bothers some vegetarians that own pets, and it is: do I have to feed them meat or can I supply vegetarian diets for my cat and dog. It is well worth thinking about this dilemma before getting a usually carnivorous pet.

Domestic carnivores such as cats and dogs are omnivores, meaning that they will eat pretty much anything If a domestic animal goes ferule (wild) it will revert to its primitive form, which means that it will hunt and scavenge.

Cats and dogs will eat grains and grasses but they prefer them semi-digested, which is why, when they make a kill, they usually tear the stomach open first and eat that and the internal organs. The meat comes last on the menu.

You can see by looking at the pets’ teeth that they have fangs for killing and gripping (for tearing) and molars for grinding and crushing. The grinding and crushing is meant for grains and bones.

This means that you might be able to sustain your pets on a vegetarian diet, |but it probably will not be simple. There has been a great deal of research into the dietary needs of human beings and so someone on a diet, measures what he consumes against what his body requires and takes supplements to match the deficit.

However do you know precisely what your pets’ requirements are and how you can supply them? If you do not, where will you find out? I am certain you can with quite a lot of study, yet do you have that level of commitment? And do you think that your pet would thank you for making it a vegetarian? It may even turn your pet into a rapacious killer to make up the deficit or fulfill its craving for meat.

Cats and dogs require a high percentage of protein, but do you think that you will be able to sneak enough nuts and tofu into its diet to supply enough? You may find your pets chasing every bird in your garden trying to get some meat, instead of observing them languidly from under your seat.

All in all, a vegetarian diet is not a good idea for domestic animals such as cats and dogs, and if you have trouble opening the cans or giving it raw meat, maybe you could ask someone else in the family who is a little less delicate to feed the animals or you could feed them meat less frequently, say just if you take them to your friend’s or mother’s house, then you can let them do it for you.

The other approach is to have rabbits or gerbils and tropical fish. Cats are not functional animals as dogs are in the sense that a dog will discourage burglars and if you are only thinking of pets as stress-reducers or a way of introducing your kids to the animal world, a rabbit will do that just well.
