If you would like to start flying or even constructing remote controlled choppers, the best manner to start is at the beginning and the start is with small electric, 7″-8″ long, battery-powered models. These models are very cheap likened to a 12 months ago, when they cost $100-$120 each. Now you can purchase one for $20.

There is virtually no assembly work with these small RC choppers, although you might have to bolt on the rotors and insert the battery and a child could do that. However, you are not buying this model in order to learn assembly, you are purchasing it in order to learn flight management.

These small remote control helicopters usually have three channel-control, which gives you power over flight in three directions: up – down; left – right and forwards – backwards.

This sounds very simple, but you will crash your RC helicopter, because you do not know what you are doing and you are not into any routines. You have almost certainly not worked out how to judge distance and height either.

First, you will crash into things and have rough landings. Second, you will miscalculate distances, height and flight time.

These latter are important because, your transmitter and receiver have a working distance of around 30 feet and if you model goes outside that range, you lose control over it – anything could occur!

In addition, the battery will power the chopper for about 5-7 minutes. If the chopper is 25 feet off the ground when the battery fails, you will have a serious crash on your hands.

Luckily, these little models are very sturdy with a metal frame, so you will almost certainly only lose a couple of rotors, which are not costly or a problem to replace. If you trash the whole thing, you have merely lost $20, but what if your model cost $500 and you were just beginning? That would be a costly manner to learn flying RC choppers, would it not?

These small model helicopters will put up with a lot of rough treatment, but you will require spares and these parts can be purchased. Parts are readily available and it is worth buying spare main and rear rotors as you purchase your model. This is doing you good.

If you choose to move up a level after a time, you will realize how useful your practice with a small RC helicopter has been, even though you may just learn so much from these small helicopters. Larger models, say a six or eight foot model will have a lot more controls and require a lot more maintenance, so start small and learn.

One thing that you will be able to do with your small model will be to use it for photographic purposes. Birds may completely ignore them, so if you strap a small, lightweight modern video camera to it, you will be able to film special footage of local birds. You might even become able to sell aerial photographs of your neighbours’ houses, with their permission, obviously.

September 11th, 2011A Short History Of Hybrid Cars

The first difficulty with working out which was the first hybrid vehicle, is deciding what the term ‘hybrid vehicle’ means. For example, a barge being pulled by a horse with the current of the canal might be construed as a hybrid vehicle. However, most people these days will agree that a true hybrid vehicle utilizes a ‘rechargeable energy storage system’ or an RESS.

For instance, this could define a vehicle that uses one kind of propulsion, such as an internal combustion engine as its main kind of propulsion, while that engine recharges batteries that can also be used to run an electric engine.

I am certain that it will surprise 90% + of people to hear that the history of hybrid vehicles is almost as long as the history of automobiles themselves. Porsche is a famous make of expensive sports cars, but in 1898 Ferdinand Porsche, a young Czech student, designed the Loher-Porsche one-cylinder internal combustion engine.

However, this engine was used to drive an electric generator, the electricity from which was used to power electric motors which were affixed to every of the four wheels. The petrol engine was used merely to produce electricity for the electric motors in this early case.

This early hybrid was exhibited at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and was capable of travelling at 35 mph (56 kph). In 1901, Porsche drove it himself to win the Exelberg Rally. After this they sold more than 300 units of their early hybrid car. Mass production had not been invented yet and rich people were still sceptical about the new, malodorous technology.

1959 was the next landmark in the history or hybrids because petrol was not expensive and few individuals, if any, foresaw the future for the world and the environment. Anyway, the car developed, the Henney Kilowatt used the early transistors or those days to regulate the flow of electricity. This was the real precursor to modern hybrid cars.

One of the developers of the Henney Kilowatt was Victor Wauk and he was concerned with the process of experimenting with electric cars in the Sixties and Seventies. Occasionally, he is called the Godfather of Hybrid Vehicles.

It is fairly remarkable, but the regenerative braking system used by contemporary hybrids to help recharge a hybrid’s batteries was invented in 1978 by the electrical engineer, David Arthurs..

It then took until president Bill Clinton took the initiative to instigate the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles in 1993. It involved the Dept of Energy, Chrysler, ford, GM and one or two others. G. W. Bush replaced this program with his own FreedomCar Initiative in 2001.

This initiative was designed to fund extraordinarily risky or difficult projects for the development of hybrid cars. It has taken us more than 100 years to rejuvenate the initial hybrid concept and we only did that because we were compelled to do it.

People are proud of their cars, and image is important to lots of people too. There is more kudos in driving a stylish looking car than a filthy one. Moreover, the resell value of such a large investment like a car has to be protected and this means frequent maintenance. However, many individuals just do not have the time to wash their cars properly, leave alone detail it.

This makes a decent business opportunity: there is plenty of demand, lots of chance and low start up costs. You could start a business in auto detailing and make profits from auto detailing. This new business venture could be run from a plot of land or the back of a van – that is you could detail cars for their owners in their own driveway. There is billions in auto detailing, or car valeting, as it is called in other countries.

So, if you were going to give making money from auto detailing due consideration what are the foremost things that you would require to be successful? We will look at the foremost ones in the rest of this piece.

Knowledge of Cars: this is not as much of a problem as it may sound. You do not require technical information of cars, but you need to know all their nooks and crannies. You also need to know how to lift carpets and replace them.

This is not rocket science and you can learn as you go, but it is worth practicing on the cars of your friends and relatives first.

Location: you will require somewhere to carry out your detailing or valeting. It is nice to have a yard, but it costs a lot, while you are only beginning, so it may be better to provide a mobile service. You could detail drivers’ cars when they are at home or at work.

If you work out of the back of a van, you will almost certainly require different equipment to that that you would require if you had a yard. You could have a pick-up or a substantial van modified to carry a generator and a tank of water.

Promotion: you will have to let people know what services you provide. Drop cards and leaflets in shops, schools and offices. Another big customer might become car and truck auctioneers and garages.

Working Capital: you will need a small amount of working capital, but that depends on alternatives you make for your business. A mobile business will be cheaper to set up. You will also need subsistence money for yourself and an advertising budget.

You will also have to do some research into your competition to see what level of service they supply and how much that costs.

Once you have these details, write a business plan and take it to your bank to seek a loan. If your figures stack up and you present your concept well, you might get a loan. Otherwise you could go into partnership with a friend or member of your family.

September 10th, 2011Diving And Its Different Forms

Diving is the globally recognized sport of jumping into water from a platform. Sometimes the divers jump whilst performing acrobatics. Diving is not only a recreational pastime but also a part of the Olympic Games. Diving is recognized as one of the most well-liked Olympic Games because it is so spectacular.

Underwater diving is one of the most common types of diving. There are two variations of underwater diving.

1. Going underwater with some breathing equipment. This kind of diving is known as Scuba diving.

2. Going underwater without any breathing apparatus. It is a breath-held diving and this kind of diving is called free diving.

Diving can also be categorized on the grounds of purpose. There can be two forms of diving on the basis of purpose.

1. Recreational diving is a diving activity done for the sake of recreation and pleasure. It is usually done with the aid of scuba apparatus which is meant to provide help in breathing.

2. Professional diving is a diving activity performed for the sake of money. The most advanced kind of professional diving is called commercial diving. Professional divers e.g. scientists perform experiments underwater and discover hidden truths concerning nature. The underwater examination of ships etc. is also done by professional divers.

Special training is needed to be a professional diver. This preparation does not just include physical training but also some classroom work. Special focus in the training is on first aid events. Trainees are taught about decompression and other diving related injuries and how to act under such scenarios.

For a long time, it was too expensive for regular folk to get training. Now technological advancements have brought costs down for scuba diving. Scuba diving has become a popular leisure activity and dive stores near such diving locations offer training and related equipment for the aid of the divers.

All around the world, the number of divers is raising. The use of rebreathers is also raising vastly. A depth of 30 to 40 meters is deemed fit for recreational diving.

If the water is deeper than this limit, it makes it a problem to dive with recreational diving equipment. In such depths, professional training and apparatus is needed for survival.

The main apparatus needed for scuba diving or free-diving are diving mask, swimfins, swimsuit, diving cylinder and regulator. A diving mask makes it easier to see clearly in water.

Divers who take part in competition diving have the same characteristics as gymnast and dancers. They must have the pre-requisites for diving i.e. flexibility, strength and awareness of air. There is some skill to diving.

A diver has to be very clear about his trajectory and the magnitude of his momentum as he cannot easily change it during the dive. Diving is enjoyable as well as a useful physical exercise.

If you are ever stuck for a gift for someone, consider a mini remote controlled helicopter. They sound very expensive and a decade ago they almost certainly were, but they have come down a great deal in cost. I am sure that you will be surprised to know that you can buy a mini radio controlled helicopter for about $30.

What type of RC helicopter can you get for $30?, you might be asking yourself. Something powered by rubber bands? Well, no, you would be surprised. Contemporary mini radio controlled helicopter have three electric motors. Two of these electric motors drive twin large rotors on top of the helicopter and one drives the tail rotor.

Three mini motors supply lots of power for these small, 20 centimeter (eight inch) wonders. They are very light, weighing merely a couple of ounces, although they are of metal alloy construction, so they are not as delicate as you might imagine. Despite the strength of these micro radio controlled choppers, they are subject to air currents, so they are first and foremost for indoor use.

Having recommended that these micro radio controlled helicopter are mainly for use indoors, you can play with them outside on a beautiful day, because the signals from the RC transmitter will carry for around 30 feet.

The rechargeable battery in the chopper will power six or seven minutes of sustained flight. That does not appear long, but the battery can be recharged quite easily in 30 minutes.

The batteries in the mini radio controlled choppers can be charged in three ways: by mains electricity with the AC charger or via the USB cable that is delivered with the chopper. This USB cable will plug into any computer and even into the hand set controller and take enough energy to fly your helicopter again.

The hand set usually takes four AA batteries, which themselves can be of the rechargeable variety in order to keep costs down as low as they can be. The controller has three frequencies to control the flight of your mini radio controlled helicopter: up and down; forwards and backwards and left and right. This allows you to place your micro helicopter through some fairly tight manoeuvres.

Two vital parts of the innards of the micro remote controlled helicopter are the 32-step speed controller and the gyroscope. The speed controller and the gyroscope automatically coordinate the pitch and speed of the rotors to make flight more stable.

These are great technological devices which make flying the mini radio controlled helicopter easier without detracting from the skill required to fly it in the correct manner.

There is no need to worry about crashing, because there is a full assortment of spares for most model helicopters – you can purchase the whole lot from spare rotors to motors and batteries. These mini radio controlled choppers are entry-level radio controlled toys, but are great fun for people of all ages.

Flying a mini radio controlled helicopter is also a good way of finding out whether you would like to take up flying bigger remote controlled choppers later on

August 11th, 2011Day Spas And Beauty Salons

Are you feeling a bit jaded? A bit run-down or even worn out? Do you feel like you ought to have a holiday, yet you do not have the time or do not have the money just now? Well, a trip to a day spa might be the answer. Most women have been to a beauty salon and so have some men, yet fewer individuals of both sexes have been to a day spa.

A day spa is an extended version of a beauty salon. The extra amenities normally involve water in some way or oil – something liquid. However, day spas resemble beauty salons in that they usually offer all of the treatments that a beauty salon offers and pampering is the prime concern.

It is the pampering as much as anything that can wash your cares away for a time and make you feel as if you have recently come back from a short vacation. Four hours at a day spa can be more relaxing (and far better for you) than a weekend away on the town.

If you have never been to a spa before, it is worth doing a local search on the computer and seeing what web sites come up. A good web site ought to list the treatments that they offer, their prices and any package offers (frequently known as day packages). It ought to also mention whether you need to book up or merely call in.

The prices might appear outrageous at first, yet it is worth checking how long the procedure takes and whether there are any luxurious preparations or oils involved, because they may be costly. Day packages can reduce the cost of a number of related treatments fairly significantly. If you still find it costly, maybe you could plan a trip for a few weeks in advance.

Something else that you should factor in while thinking about day spas and costs is the tranquility. Most spas have strict rules concerning noise. So, no small children, no shouting, no cell phones or pagers, no radios or Walkmen, just soothing background music. Everything in a day spa is meant to make you feel pampered, cared for, less stressed and much more relaxed.

So what services can you expect to find at a day spa? Well, everything that you would expect to find at a beauty salon for a start off, so that includes manicure, pedicures, hair styling, facials and make-up or make-overs.

However, a spa ought to also supply massages of various types like a full body massage, an oil massage, a Thai massage, a foot massage and maybe others too. They might also have a steam box or a sauna and / or Turkish Baths, mud wraps, herbal wraps, mud baths and even flotation chambers. Many spas provide aroma therapy and offer complimentary healthy drinks like fruit and vegetable juices too. Some may even have a swimming pool as well.

Detoxes feature quite often at most spas and some might offer colonic irrigation as well. However, the best value for money are the day packages or one-off specials, which allow you to combine a number of treatments for one discounted payment.

Writing is a skill and, like most skills, it can be learned or at least you can greatly improve the writing talent that you have (and everyone has some writing aptitude). You can most easily develop your writing abilities by writing. You could supplement that practice by reading and you can go a stage further by studying some grammar. There are also writers’ classes or workshops you could attend.

But in essence, the best thing to do is simply write and keep on writing and if you are not sure of something, look it up and pretty soon, you will find that you will spend less and less time looking things up. You could purchase reference books and dictionaries or you could simply use free on line resources.

Never believe that you cannot write well enough to create something. If you are nervous about your ability, write in forums, add comments to blogs or create pieces for places like Gather. Whatever you do, you should keep your hand in and keep writing. You will find that it gets easier and that ideas start to flow more readily.

When you feel that you can write well enough, why not try to make some money out of it? You could write ebooks on your favourite topics or on problems that affect a large number of of individuals. You can discover what those issues are by visiting chat sites and forums or reading the ‘Agony Aunt’ columns in the magazines.

Let us assume that you have got past the comments in forums stage and you are writing articles for Gather. Keep copies of those pieces on your hard drive and arrange them in folders by issue.

Once you have a few hundred, you can look through them and strive to assemble a couple of topics into enough material for a book. You may have 80% of a book doing nothing on your hard disk and you can fill in the gaps and rewrite the old material a little.

In the meantime, add your name to the sites that are searching for authors. They might want to see an instance of your efforts before they qualify you, but that is no difficulty – it is nice to pass tests and educational if you fail them.

If you are given a subject to write on as an assignment, concentrate on getting your facts right and do not copy from others (plagiarize). It is a author’s greatest sin. After writing your article, check it for grammar and spelling.

It is not worth saving a copy of this piece after you have been paid for it, because it will no longer be your property and you could get into trouble for saying that it is yours.

You sold the rights to it, just as good as if you sold your car. The best thing to do with your own copies of sold pieces is to erase them after being paid, then there is no enticement and no risk of mistakes.

When you have written articles for others, you could register to write ebooks as well. If you are being paid to do it, get all the relevant details before you begin and stick to them. You will have to know: the title of the book; the minimum and maximum length of it in words; the delivery date and how much you will be paid. There might be other details too such as: font type, font size and line spacing, but they can all be adjusted later.

Ebooks are starting to come of age. It is now becoming a more viable option to sell your ideas or niche book on line than it is to sell it through a conventional publisher. There are on line publishers like Amazon that will upload your ebook, help you market it, deliver it to your customers, track sales, take payments and pay you the balance.

You can to set your own cost for the book and you will receive about 70% of the absolute revenue. Dedicated ebook readers are making the ebook even more available. For example, say that you are travelling and you finish your book, you may find it difficult to purchase a different book to read for a time, especially if you are abroad.

Not so with modern ebook readers. You only go online with their built-in WIFI capability and download a different one. Or you could download a dozen so that you do not run the risk of being without. Ebooks are cheaper than traditional paper books and more readily accessible. Lots of readers will also hold over 3,000 books.

So, this is a manner to go for publishing a book, but what if you cannot write well enough? What if you have immense ideas for books – fact or fiction – but you just cannot write them down? There can be a number of reasons for this. Maybe writing in not your forte; maybe English (the biggest market for books) is not your mother tongue; or maybe you only do not have the time.

So why not outsource them? Numerous books purportedly written by famous sports personalities were in fact outsourced or written by ghost writers. That is nothing new and no source of shame. It is only horses for courses.

This actually is a business in a box. Let us look at some examples. If you think that the current craze for stories on macabre topics will continue, why not think up a few scenarios and pay for five short stories that you can compile into one ebook? Or look on line, find out what individuals are having problems with and pay for ebooks to solve those problems.

You could have ten books for sale on Amazon within a month offering revenue for years.

So how do you go about it? Well, first of all, someone has to have the concepts and that has to be you or your family or friends. Then you have to outline those concepts for the writer to be able to follow. Then you need to state how long the author has to complete the project; how many words it should contain and what standard of English you expect.

Then Google ”ghost writers desired’ or something comparable. There are many sites acting as go-betweens and lots of solo writers too. Give them the specifications and carefully decide on your writer.

Make sure that all intellectual copyrights are signed over to you on payment and then go over to Amazon, open a publishers account and follow the directions. You can be publishing within 20 minutes and earning within a couple of days. It is really a business in a box.

Anybody who knows anything about deterring burglars and especially home security will tell you that lighting is a vital feature of protecting yourself and your property. Interior lighting is important, but outdoor lighting is vital. Notwithstanding that, there are still a great deal of people who do not pay enough attention to this vital aspect of home security. They appear to believe that they can rely only on the interior burglar alarm.

However, the best method of deterring burglars is stopping them getting into your property in the first place. It is a well-known fact that many people do not act in response to a neighbour’s security alarm ringing because there are so many false alarms. The difference with outdoor lighting is, that as the would be burglar enters your property, a spotlight will switch on, automatically framing the intruder in a powerful beam, which is the last thing that any burglar wants, particularly if there is a CCTV video camera there as well, even if it a fake one.

The stipulation is that the lights must be out of reach, in case the burglar sets your house up during the day time for a robbery later on that night. Therefore, if you realize that one or more of your outdoor lights is not working, you should have it checked out straight away. Not tomorrow, right now, before it gets dark.

The most widespread point of entry into a house, even for burglars, is the doors. Therefore, you must install lighting at all exterior doors. If you have glass panels on the doors, the sensor could be outside and the light could be inside, shining out. That way it is more tamper-free.

If your house appears too secure, a burglar may come to a decision that your garage is an easier target. The means you can get around this is by linking a light to the opening of your garage door, so that when the garage door is opened the burglar will be standing in a pool of light.

The outside of your house should be protected by at least one outdoor light per exterior wall and these lights should be triggered by sensors: either a movement sensor or a passive infra red (PIR) sensor. The good ones will also be governed by a daylight sensor so that they only activate at night time.

In order to be doubly certain that you notice the outside lighting coming on, you could make the security light connected to your main burglar alarm system. If you are in the house at the time, a fairly quiet internal alarm should ring, but if you are out, then the lights should trigger the main external siren.

Following this advice will help keep your house and your family safe, but it is important to stay vigilant. You must keep your alarm system in tip-top condition. Light bulbs have to be renewed immediately and any problems with the system that you come across, must be attended to immediately too.

Lastly, in order to be serious about deterring burglars with outdoor lighting, you will need to have your system checked and brought up-to-date every five years or so.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article writes on quite a few subjects, but is now involved with outdoor accent lighting. If you would like to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at Outdoor Wall Lamps.

When times are difficult, like they have become lately, it is time to cut costs. This is not a popular move, but to be honest, it need not be such a problem as you might envisage. The biggest single bill for most households is the energy bill and in especially the electric bill. If you do not use electricity to cook or heat your house, then the next greatest contributer to your bill is almost certainly lighting.

Anyway, here are six suggestions for reducing your household expenses.

1] Plan your menu before you go shopping. If you are able to, plan your meals for the entire week so that you can use bits and pieces from one day’s meals in the next day’s. It is also easier and cheaper to buy in bulk, which will also save you travelling costs. Use coupons were you can. It is an obvious idea, but one that a lot of people overlook as they read their magazines.

2] Replace all your traditional, incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL). These bulbs use a low quantity of energy, but still put out a high amount of light. It is a good idea to check for the ‘Energy Star’ rating before you buy in order to make certain that you are getting a high quality product.

3] Instead of using all the lighting in a room, try to illuminate only what you have to. If you are working at your desk, switch off all the other lighting except a desk top lamp and possibly a standard floor lamp. It is surprising how far light travels in a dark room. The light from two lamps such as these will be ample to see your way around too.

4] Buy stocks of light bulbs by the dozen. They will last a long time, but the CFL bulbs will not deteriorate, so as the price increases with inflation, you will have a stock at the old price. If you can, buy them online, because an online retailer has fewer overheads, which can convert into savings of as much as 70%. Online auctions are also a great idea, you may be able to pick up bankrupt stock.

5] Prepare your own meals and make your own food for work. Take homemade sandwiches or salads. A flask of tea or coffee will supply up to $25 of Starbucks’ alternative coffee drinks

6] Put as many of your lights and appliances on timers or photosensitive switches. If you use passive infra red sensors to activate lights to deter intruders in your garden, you could be burning more electricity than you have to during the day. If you buy flood lights with photosensitive switches, then they will deactivate the lights during daylight when they are pretty ineffective anyway.

If you have a pond and pond lights, you can also use similar devices to turn your pond lights and pond fountain off during the night..

None of these measures should have a detrimental effect on your lifestyle, although they will save you money.

Ebooks or electronic books are becoming more and more popular in comparison with normal paper books each month. In 2010, Amazon sold more ebooks than traditional books for the first time ever. It is likely that this tendency will continue, because ebooks are far cheaper than printed books. Not only that but it is easier to download a book in minutes than go to a book stare.

Traditionally, ie since the Internet started, people read ebooks on their desktop or laptop computer. In ‘those days’, most ebooks were promotional things, providing just limited knowledge as a tempter to go to the writer’s web site in order to increase sales. In other words, most ebooks were merely adverts to hook a possible client.

That situation still goes on, but increasingly, ebooks are stand-alone items of value without any marketing or any links back to a web site, because they are complete things in themselves – like any regular book you would purchase in a shop. But they are cheaper and more readily accessible.

Another very attractive aspect of ebooks for authors is that it is easier to get up and running – selling your books. If you have ever tried to have a book published, you will know that it can become – and normally is – a very long, drawn-out process involving long spells of waiting and nail-biting.

For instance, it is rumoured that it took the writer the book ‘Virgin Soldiers’ 21 years to find a publisher, yet it became a successful film too. The same, to a lesser extent is true of the Harry Potter books.

If books of that calibre had problems, what opportunity do you think that you have? I have read that approximately one manuscript in ten thousand appears on the book shelves. Would odds like that encourage new writers? No. So how many decent authors are falling by the wayside? Quite a lot, so it would appear.

Another bonus for online ebook publishing is the fact that writers on small niche subjects, have the opportunity to spread their expertise and earn some money too. The fact is that publishing a book in the conventional way is so expensive that the subject of the book has to be very popular or the book will become too expensive to sell.

This is not an issue for ebooks. If you are interested in, say, German teddy bears from 1950-1955, you can publish your book as an ebook whenever you like for the same price as a high interest subject like, say, the Death of Princess Diana – almost at zero price.

This situation will only improve as more and more companies bring out low-cost ebook readers and more and more businesses are willing to host, market and sell your ebook for a commission.

For example, Amazon will handle the sales and distribution of your ebook for 30% of the cost of your book, which you can set yourself. This empowers authors who would never have got their books to market in any other way.

This list includes both British born artists and those who were born elsewhere but did most of their most important creations in the U.K. The selection is listed in chronological order by date of birth.

Max Beerbohm ( 1872 – 1956 )

Sir Henry Maximilian “Max” Beerbohm was born in London, son of a wealthy Lithuanian-born grain merchant. His family gave him he nick-name of Max and this is what he signed himself in his art and was known as for the rest of his life.

Beerbohm was educated at Charterhouse School and Merton College, Oxford but left without taking a degree as he was already well recognized as a caricaturist and humourist.

He had an incapacity to draw hands and feet but was very good at heads and his dandified figures with inflated heads quickly became his trade-mark. The Times newspaper in 1913 described him as ?the greatest of English comic artists and he was variously hailed as ?the English Goya? and “the greatest portrayer of personalities in the history of art?

Henry Bateman (1887 – 1970)

Bateman was born in New South Wales, Australia of English parents who returned to England soon after he was born. He learned art at Westminster School of Art and the Goldsmith Institute.

His style matured early in life and by the age of 17 it was already established. He achieved a contract with Tatler magazine but is best well-known for his ?The Man Who??.? series of cartoons. These showed hapless people who had committed mostly upper class social faux pas. ?The Man Who lit his Cigar before the Loyal Toast? is a prime instance.

Sir David Low (1891 – 1963)

Sir David Alexander Cecil Low was born in New Zealand and taught at Dunedin and Christchurch. He began his professional life in New Zealand and in fact his first effort was published while he was only 11 years of age.

He later moved to Australia and next to England and by 1927 was working for The Evening Standard. He is best remembered for his caricatures depicting Hitler and Mussolini both before and during World War II. In fact, generations of New Zealand school children learned about the beginning of the Second World War using textbooks illustrated by Low.

He was especially hated by Hitler and after the war it was uncovered that his name was in the ?Black Book? which listed those who the Nazis wanted to arrest after they had conquered Britain.

Low was knighted in 1962, a year before his death. His obituary spoke of him as “the dominant cartoonist of the western world”

Ronald Searle (b. 1920)

Ronald William Fordham Searle was born in Cambridge and began drawing at the surprisingly early age of five and was working for remuneration by the age of 15. The War interrupted his art studies and he enlisted in the Royal Engineers .

He was serving in Singapore when he was captured by the Japanese. He was a prisoner of war for the remainder of the war ultimately working on the infamous Siam-Burma ?Death Railway?. He produced, in secret, many drawings depicting conditions in the camps which survived detection by being hidden under the mattresses of dying prisoners.

He returned to England at the end of the war and produced a prodigious volume of work in the 1950?s and 60?s. However he is best known as the creator of ?St Trinians School?.

Gerald Scarfe (b. 1936)

Gerald Anthony Scarfe was born in London and as a child was severely asthmatic. During his early bed-ridden years he busied himself by drawing. He began his working life in advertising but by the early 60?s his caricatures were appearing in ?Private Eye? and this led to a job with the ?Daily Mail?.

But it was his effort with the British rock group Pink Floyd for which he is most known especially the illustration for the cover of their 1979 album ?The Wall?.

Searle also provided the caricatures for the opening and closing sequences of the well-liked BBC comedy ?Yes Minister? and in 1998 he drew caricatures of Tommy Cooper, Eric Morecombe, Joyce Grenfell, Les Dawson and Peter Cook which were shown on a set of five British postage stamps celebrating British comedians.

August 7th, 2011Buying A Hot Tub

For most individuals, buying a hot tub, also called a gazebo, a hot spa or a Jacuzzi, is a first time event. This makes it quite a daunting undertaking, because they are not cheap and there are numerous variables.

You have to do research on the different types of jets, the power of the pump that is best for you, the location, whether to install a deck around it or not et cetera, et cetera. In this piece, we will take a look at a few of these points to make buying a hot tub easier for you.

The first point to think about is size. This normally depends on two things: where you are going to put the hot tub and how many people are going to be using it at a time. If you are hoping to situate it above the ground floor inside your home, you will have to check the weight of the spa whilst it is full of water and people to see whether your floor will take that weight without reinforcement. If the climate is decent where you live, the garden is the best place to put it.

The next deliberation is cost. There is a vast choice of hot tubs and a wide span of prices as well. If you find that the cost of a new hot tub is simply out of your range, what about purchasing a second hand one?

There is rather a large second hand market in Jacuzzis because hotels, health spas and some home owners have to renew their models. You may be lucky enough to find rather a plush second hand model for less than the price of a new cheap one. Ask at a local installer’s for details.

The next consideration is the material that the actual tub is manufactured from. This is not inevitably the same as the housing or cabinet that surrounds the tub. Traditional-style hot tubs are made from local hardwoods such as cedar, oak, redwood or teak, but they are weighty and leak a bit.

Contemporary materials used are a mixture of plastic and fibreglass moulded into comfortable seating arrangements. They are lighter and do not leak (or should not).

Then you can think about the housing. Is the hot tub going to be on its own somewhere or is it going to be built in? if you are going to build it in, what are you going to build it into? A deck? Hardwood, softwood, concrete and tiles?

Then there is the routine maintenance of the tub. This is not difficult but it is essential, so if you are building your tub into something, remember that you will have to have access to certain parts of it. Read the instruction manual of the tub that you buy to learn which parts will require maintenance and cleaning.

Normally, this involves cleaning the jets, adding chemicals to the water, changing filters and maybe renewing a gasket on the pump, which could be assigned to an engineer in an annual service contract.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on a variety of topics, but is now involved with second hand hot tubs. If you would like to know more, please visit our site at Hot Springs Spa Parts

Everyone knows about the problem of the proliferation of greenhouse gases and the devastation of the rain forests. We all know of the stress that over-crowding puts on the environment and we all know that we are trying to do our bit by recycling. The differences of outlook usually come down to degree. In short, we all know that it is going on, but we do not all agree how serious it has become yet.

Fair enough, in my opinion. I distrust anyone who calls himself an expert. That is a description that ought to be used to describe you, no one that you use to describe yourself. Like the individuals who call themselves entrepreneurs rather than business people because it sounds grander.

Anyway, I am going off on a tangent. One of the things that readers can do is not buy books, newspapers and magazines. This would relieve the strain on trees and allow the recycled material that we currently use for books, newspapers and magazines to become used on essential school books. It may even make them a bit cheaper.

Of course, publishers of paperback books, newspapers and magazines are not going to be glad with that proposal and neither are people who work in the industry or readers who like to hold their purchase in their hands. Nevertheless, it appears inevitable that it will come to pass one day.

Indeed, numerous moves have already been made in that direction. There are dozens of handheld ebook reading devices on the market, the most well-known of which is probably the Amazon Kindle. The Kindle comes in two sizes: the standard 6″ model for reading ‘ordinary’ books and the 9.7″ device for reading technical books, newspapers and magazines. Needless to say, the larger model will also display paperbacks.

The Kindle and many of the other equivalent handheld ebook reading devices will allow the owner to link to an online book shop, library or repository and download books, newspapers and magazines for a fee. Having said that, there are hundreds of thousands of books that are out of copyright, which can be downloaded free of charge from Amazon, Google and the Glutenberg Project.

Lots of these handheld ebook reading devices will hold 3,500 books! That is a lot of paper, whichever way you look at it. 3,500 books at your finger tips and in your pocket with millions more where they came from and lots more being added to the libraries every day. All downloadable from anywhere where the Net is available anywhere in the world in a minute or two.

This means that avid readers or researchers never need wait for the bookshop to open again or have to go into town to look for a bookshop or library. How many trees and gallons of petrol can that save you in your lifetime?

It is already often predicted that universities will be offering course books to their students on such devices within five years and that high schools and colleges will follow suit within ten years. These handheld ebook reading devices are almost certainly not suitable for infants because they are not robust, but private readers are taking them up rapidly.

It may come as a surprise to those who have not learned the history of cricket, but it is now believed that Cricket really started in Saxon or Norman times as a children?s game played by children living in the area called the Weald of Kent in what is today Kent and Sussex in South East England . It was not taken up as an adult game until the start of the 17th century.

The first known allusion to the game in the history of cricket is to be discovered in the records of a 1598 court case concerning a dispute over a school’s ownership of a piece of land. A 59-year old coroner, John Derrick, testified that he and his school friends had played ‘creckett’ on the site fifty years beforehand.

The school was the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, and Mr Derrick’s report proves beyond acceptable doubt that the game was being played in Surrey around 1550.

The first reference to it being played as an adult sport was in 1611, when two men in Sussex were prosecuted for playing cricket on Sunday instead of going to church. This was in the same year that a dictionary defined cricket as a boys’ game and this suggests that adult involvement was a recent development.

With all the recent press coverage of the pressure of gambling upon the outcome of cricket matches, it is astonishing that historically, gambling played a very substantial part in the development of the game in England. Cricket had definitely become a major gambling sport by the end of the 17th century.

There is a newspaper report of a “great match” played in Sussex in 1697 which was 11-a-side and played for the high stakes of 50 guineas a side. 50 guineas would be the equivalent of GBP5,000 to GBP 6,000 in today?s terms.

The present day arrangement of County teams came about as a result of well-off gamblers forming their own teams in order to fortify their bets and started to employ local experts from village cricket as the first professionals. It is believed that the first ?County? game took place in 1697 between Sussex and another county.

Cricket was introduced to North America via the British colonies in the 17th century, and in the 18th century it spread to other regions of the British dominated world. It was introduced to the West Indies by colonists and to India by the British East India Company in the first half of the century.

The first colonists took it to Australia soon after 1788 followed by New Zealand and South Africa in the first years of the 19th century.

It might come as a shock to lots of people that the very first International cricket game took place between the United States and Canada in 1844 (Canada won by 23 runs) and the very first overseas tour was by a party of leading English professionals who toured North America in 1857.

The earliest English tour of Australia was in 1862, with the first Australian tour of England being by a team of Australian Aborigine players in 1868.

In 1877, an England touring team in Australia played two games against full Australian XIs that are now thought of as the very first Test matches. The next year, the Australians toured England for the first time and were a spectacular success.

No Tests were played on that tour but more soon followed. At The Oval in 1882, there was played what was to become the most famous match of all time which gave birth to The Ashes.

August 3rd, 2011Drawing Cars: How To Start

Do you like drawing or painting? If so, have you ever considered drawing or painting cars? You might even be able to earn some money out of it. Young drivers love their first car and older drivers love their flashy cars. You could sketch their cars and then sell the sketches to them or offer to make a painting from your sketch.

The helpful thing about drawing cars is that while they are still, they are perfectly still and they do not alter their outline or colour like humans change their expressions, stances and clothes. In fact, it would be fairly easy to compile a collection of sketches of quite exotic cars as well – cars that most people could never even hope to own.

So, how would you go about doing that? Well, the first thing to do is make a decision which sort of cars or vehicles you want to draw. That normally equates to the kind of cars that you find beautiful. You might like vintage, classic, sports or racing cars. Or drag or Formula One or luxury cars or any other type.

Granted some of these types of cars are not easy to see unless you live in a big city, but you might find a way around that. You might be able to produce some fantastic drawings from decent photos, videos, manufacturers’ advertisements or Internet promotions. See You Tube.

The thing that you have to do, by whichever means you have accessible to you, is familiarize yourself with your subject. Just as early painters used to become involved with autopsies in order to understand the underlying bone and muscle structure, so should the aspirant drawer of cars study the basic structure of cars.

All cars are basically the same, just as all humans are in essence the same, yet every body is different and every make of car is different as well. Begin with the general and work your way towards the precise. In other words, familiarize yourself with the fundamentals of cars and then the particulars of the model that you want to draw.

If you are already an felt sketcher, I do not want to tell you how to suck eggs, but if you are merely beginning out, I want to give you some pointers.

Make your initial sketches fairly easy. Start by drawing fundamental shapes: most cars are oblong with squarish side windows and oval front and rear windows. When you have a basic contours, you can start attempting to add some specifics.

Do not be worried about going over your initial lines in order to make the shapes more realistic. When you begin, your car may look as if it is emerging from a fog, but the next time you draw a car, the lines will be better and more truthful from the beginning.

The main thing is not to be worried about making mistakes and only listen to critics who have tried sketching themselves.

Individuals often ask themselves why people like sports cars. Some say that it is the macho image, some say that it is a striving to revisit the owner’s youth, some see them as sex symbols and pulling magnets and maybe all those are valid, but one thing is for certain, sports cars stand out in an age when you have to be an expert on cars to be able to tell the difference between the various models without looking at the badge.

Modern family cars all look the same; all SUV’s look the same, all pick ups look the same, because they are all designed by computer and computers can only come to one ‘best’ conclusion. Enquire of a computer which is the most aerodynamic shape and it is not going to give you fifty choices, is it? So, all family cars look the same.

But sports cars are all different. Manufacturers of sports cars like their models to stand out for their beauty and style among other items. That is not to say that sports car manufacturers do not use computers, but they can permit themselves more freedom in the design aspect because the engine is going to be stronger and the materials are going to be dearer (which means lighter) and fuel economy is not the name of the game – beauty and style are.

If you have reservations about what I am saying, look at real racing cars like those in Formula One – they all look the same as well, because a computer was asked: what is the most aerodynamic and fuel economic shape? Beauty and style are beside the point in Formula One.

Another reason why people like sports cars is because they are faster than standard cars, although most countries have restrictions on how fast you can drive on their roads. However, the fast acceleration that a performance car like a sports car has, is still helpful for overtaking and getting out of trouble. If used properly, acceleration is a helpful safety feature.

Some individuals also like to show off their wealth by buying an ostentatious car, because everyone knows that a Maseratti, a Lamborghini or a Ferrari is very expensive. The appearance of these cars is important to their owners, because not only are they flamboyant, but they are also beautiful, sleek and stylish and the owner hopes that some of that identity will rub off on him or her.

Different sports cars also have different driving characteristics. While this is the case of all makes of cars, it does not matter so much if steering is a touch light on a family car travelling at 40 mph, but it does on a sports car travelling at 80 mph.

The car has to be just right for the driver’s ability and preferences. The car will not be manufactured to suit the driver, so drivers of sports cars normally have their favourites the choice of which is affected by its handling characteristics.

A last reason why drivers like sports cars is because they often hold their value well and can even rise in value if it is a especially good or desirable model.

There are a number of places you can look if you are searching for help or advice on a wood working project. One of the best pointers when searching for pointers, is to ask a retired carpenter in your neighbourhood. Many retirees miss their career and also miss the days when there were apprentices to whom they could pass on their skills.

You could learn a great deal from a retired carpenter, because anyone who is retiring now would still have done a proper, old-fashioned apprenticeship, by which I mean college, day release from college then then work experience.

After leaving college, gaining a diploma and finding a position, the young carpenter would do perhaps a year or two in the machine shop before being permitted to go out on site to learn how to fit what he or she had made, under the supervision of a skilled carpenter.

That was a very all round apprenticeship, but it all began to alter in most countries in the Nineties or even in the mid-Eighties. I am not decrying ‘modern’ apprenticeships, yet these days individuals seem to become more specialized than they used to be. If you are looking for help or advice on a wood working project, look for a retiree – they will have more time anyhow.

If you want to make something, but you are inexpert, get a wood working plan. You may think that you do not need one to just make a table with benches or a bird table and maybe you do not, yet it is better to get into the routine of learning how to read and decipher easy plans first, so that once you move onto harder projects, you can understand the plans.

If you are worried about the costs, there is no necessity. You can get hold of pretty good plans for wood working projects free on the Internet or you can purchase really top-notch plans for only a couple of pence each, particularly if you purchase a CD with thousands of different plans on it.

The difference between a decent plan and a mediocre one is enormous. A decent plan will advise on the type of timber to use and the best tools to do the work well. It may even give you an idea of the level of skill needed to make the article and an notion of the cost too, although the usefulness of this aspect is eroded by time.

So, what sort of things should a novice begin making? Well, a bird table is a decent starting place and so is a garden table with two benches. In general, all garden furniture is a good place to start, because, let us be frank, if it is a little rough, it does not matter. It is a good manner of getting experience without attracting too much criticism.

Indoor stuff is a different kettle of fish, but you could try a jewelery box or a wine rack. If you want to learn marquetry or inlaying, create a chess board out of timbers of two different colours, say, beech and mahogany. They look really nice!

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with a favourite subject, wine rack plans. If you are interested in Desk Woodworking Plans, please click through to our site, where we have 14,000 wood working plans.

August 1st, 2011What Is Formula D Racing?

Unless you are a fan of racing cars, there is a decent chance that you have not heard of Formula D Racing. Formula D has its adherents of course, but it is still not as widely known as the other types of racing like Formula One, Drag Car Racing, NASCAR or Cross Country Rallying. This is partly because it is a fairly new kind of car racing.

Every year the national television coverage is a bit more extensive, yet it is taking a long time to prise some of the airtime away from the more traditional sports. Once you have seen a competition though, the likelihood is that you will become hooked on this exciting sport that they have Christened Formula D.

The ‘D’ in Formula D stands for ‘drifting’ which is another name given to the sport. Drifting refers to the angle of the car with reference to the sides of the road at any given moment. Drifting around bends permits the car to maintain its highest possible speed in a bend. Drifting sounds natural and therefore commonplace, but it is actually very difficult to do well.

Drifting takes skill and plenty of practice. Drivers are judged partially on their talent at drifting. There are in fact two aspects of Formula D or two types of drifting. There are the traditional style qualifying runs and there are also tandem battles. Qualifying runs involve the driver racing solo flat out against the clock, drifting as necessary to maintain the highest speed they can.

However, tandem runs involve two car drivers who are being scored on their skills at outwitting the other driver. The judges are looking for the line of drift, the speed of the cars, overtaking, crashes and much more. Driving in the tandem runs definitely sorts the men out from the boys.

Formula Drifting grew up a little chaotically, but there have been serious attempts to control it. At the moment the Formula Drift Championship is the only professional drifting championship that is sanctioned by SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) Pro Racing in the United States, although there are frequently amateur local drifting competitions held unofficially.

There needs to be more officially authorized races so that standards are maintained and each driver follows the same set of rules. This is the only way that the TV stations will pick up on drifting and help promote it more. Drifting is new to the United States, yet the first Drifting Races took place in 2004, so not all that long ago anyway. It is still very much a modern sport.

At the moment the country where Formula D is most well-liked is Japan, but that is likely to change once the American media gets to grips with Drifting. At the moment it is still not that simple to watch drifting events unless you live in California, Washington, Georgia or New Jersey and it is still not easy to watch it on TV unless you can watch G4TechTV, which is commonly known as G4.

When you want to add style to your house, one way of doing so and adding security at the same time, is by having window shutters fixed to the outside of your house. Exterior window shutters add a traditional, Mediterranean look to a building. These days, most houses have glass windows, but before that, people used shutters to adjust the light levels, stop insects and the cold from entering and for protection.

Exterior window shutters come in many different shapes and made from various materials, although the most common ones are wooden and oblong. The quality of the materials used will influence how long your shutters will last, because, as with all exterior goods, they will be exposed to all forms of extreme weather conditions.

Plastic, vinyl, metal and wooden shutters are available at many home improvement centres. Although they look fantastic, shutters also have practical uses. They can prevent glaring noon sunlight from over heating your home as well as offering protection.

Cedar wood is a good choice, as are most other hard woods. Hardwoods are more resistant to rain and sunlight and, so long as they are painted, varnished or oiled regularly – at least once a year – then your shutters will give you ten or more years of good service.

Most varieties of hardwood are very resistant to attack from insects too. This is because a lot of them contain oils that are repugnant or even toxic to insects. However, if you are unsure about the quality of the timber that your shutters are made from, you can paint them.

Painting, staining or oiling is far easier if you carry it out before you hang the shutters. If you want to use oil to protect your new wooden shutters, first stain them to the colour that you want them to be with a stain without varnish. When you have accomplished the desired shade and it has dried, pour oil linseed oil onto a cloth and rub it into the wood in circular motions. The more coats you give it the better, but it may not accept more that two or three coats.

If you want to varnish your shutters, either stain them to the colour you require as above and then seal them with clear yacht varnish or use a stained yacht varnish without the stain. Whichever way you go, thin the first coat of varnish down until it is almost watery. Paint it on and leave to dry. Rub it down with medium coarse sandpaper and then coat it again with neat varnish. Wait for it to dry and sand it down again, but with fine sandpaper. Add at least one more coat, but it is a matter of the more the better.

If you want to paint them, apply a primer or some thinned down undercoat. Wait for it to dry and sand it lightly with fine sandpaper. Next, apply a coat of undercoat that is suitable for the finishing colour. For example, grey is good for black, brown and even olive or burgundy. Sand it down when it is dry with fine paper. Lastly, gloss your shutters with the final colour.

In conclusion, hang the shutters on suitable hinges using brass screws. Next time, you paint or varnish your shutters paint over the screw heads, although brass never looks out of place anyway.

Have you ever been to a health spa resort? If you have not, then you ought to consider it. If you have never been pampered for a day or even a couple of hours, you do not know what you are missing. However, what many individuals, even those who do go to a health spa regularly, do not realize is that it is occasionally better to take one of the popular health spa salon day packages than to take isolated treatments.

One of the benefits of taking a spa salon day package is price, but another is compatibility. Individual treatments such as a facial can seem expensive when it is likened to a home application done by yourself, yet a package may include a facial, a haircut and a make over for not much more.

Spa salon day packages be likely to concentrate on one particular region, but they take that region by storm. The region concerned could be your face, your feet, your thighs or your tummy or perhaps only your skin in general. Whichever region you choose to have a go at, you will come out of the health spa after a spa salon day package feeling a lot better than when you went in.

Here are some examples of spa salon day packages that you might find at your local spa.

A ‘Girls’ Day Out’ package is normally a ‘pamper package and is intended for a group of girlfriends to go together. This type of spa salon day package will usually include a wrap, a facial and a massage with free health drinks like fruit juice.

A “Bridal Group Booking” is intended for the bride and her entourage of bridesmaids, but it is naturally up to the bride who is invited. A wedding is a very stressful affair and so this spa salon day package is intended to be a stress-reliever. This package may be a gift from the bride to herself and her friends or a present from someone else. It will often include aromatherapy, a facial, a pedicure and a manicure.

A ‘Men’s Mates Spa Package’ is a often a general maintenance programme concentrating on the regions that most men overlook. This will frequently include a broad-spectrum skin toner concentrating particularly on rough and dry patches; a facial; a manicure, a pedicure and a scalp massage with oil.

A ‘Teenagers’ Get Together’ would be comparable to the males’ package but it would concentrate more on the face and back, especially if the teenagers are suffering from pimples or acne. A teenagers’ spa salon day package is a useful way of introducing teenagers of both sexes to the ways of taking care of their body.

Besides these spa salon day packages, there might also be sampler packages so that you get a trimmed down version of several treatments. This is fantastic for the first timer, especially teenagers who might be taking care of themselves in ways that their parents maybe did not have the time or money for.

July 26th, 2011The New History of Rugby

Today, each schoolboy knows the story of William Webb Ellis, the Rugby School pupil “who with a fine disregard for the rules of football as played in his time, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it”. The presentation trophy for the Rugby World Cup is named the Webb Ellis trophy in his honour, and his “achievement” is commemorated by a plaque at the school

There is only one problem with this story. It simply is not a fact. It was not until four years after the death of Webb Ellis in 1876 that the story first saw the light of day and its source is thought to come from a local antiquarian and previous Rugbeian Matthew Bloxam.

He was not a contemporary of Webb Ellis and says that the story was related to him by an unnamed source some 53 years after the incident is alleged to have happened.

In 1823, when the event is supposed to have occurred, the rules of rugby had yet to be written and any changes, such as the legality of carrying or running with the ball, were often agreed on an ad hoc basis a short time before the start of a game.

There were thus no formal rules for football during the period William Webb Ellis was at the school (1816-25). It was not until 1845, some 200 years after football was first played at Rugby School, that three pupils published the first written rules of the game.

For many years it had been the boys, and not the masters who had laid down the rules which were frequently modified by each new generation of students.

Guy’s Hospital Football Club, formed in London in 1843, by old boys from Rugby School, has robust claims to be the oldest football club in the world. It definitely predates by 14 years the creation of Sheffield FC, believed to be the oldest club playing association football.

In 1871, after a number of problematic disputes with the Football Association, 21 clubs met in London to create an association of those clubs ‘who play the rugby-type game’.

And so the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was formed. The first International rugby game was played on 27 March 1871 between England and Scotland. The English team wore white shirts adorned with a red rose and the Scots brown shirts with a thistle. (Scotland won the game).

The worries and conflicts regarding amateurism and professionalism had long proved a thorny topic. The representatives of Yorkshire and Lancashire are accredited with bringing in rules concerning amateurism in 1879.

These rules were finally formalized by the RFU in 1886. It is widely believed that the northern clubs were in favour of the professional game whereas these northern bodies were robust advocates of amateurism,

However, conflict arose over the controversy regarding ‘broken time’, the issue of whether players ought to receive reimbursement for taking time off work to play.

The northern clubs had a substantial number of working class players who had either to miss games due to work commitments, or forego their wages in order to play rugby. By 1892, this issue of broken time repayments was difficult not just for northern clubs such as Bradford and Leeds but also for clubs in the south.

It became an anxiety of the RFU: these broken time repayments would become a rapid route to professionalism.

On 29 August 1895, 20 clubs from Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire met at the George Hotel, Huddersfield and decided to resign from the RFU and create the Northern Rugby Football Union, which from 1922 became the Rugby Football League.

The quarrel about payment was one which at the time was also affecting soccer and cricket. Each game had to work out a compromise; rugby’s position was the most radical. Amateurism was strictly enforced, and anyone accepting payment for playing rugby league was disqualified.

However, on 26 August 1995 the International Rugby Board declared rugby union an “open” game and thereby removed all restrictions on payments or benefits to those connected with the game.

It did this because of a committee’s decision that to do so was the only manner to end the hypocrisy of sham amateurism and to keep control of rugby union. The wheel had turned full circle.

The previously-mentioned Christmas craft decoration ideas for children are just a few of the many that exist. In addition to using your own craft ideas, you can also find a quantity of other fun Christmas craft projects for children online. You can find a collection of ideas by performing a standard internet search. Also, in your neighborhood library or at one of your local book stores, you may also be able to find a collection of Christmas craft books for children. These books tend to outline the supplies needed, as well as giving detailed directions on how to make Christmas ornaments.

Regardless of which kind of Christmas ornaments you permit your child or children to make, they will probably enjoy the experience, especially if you participate as well. Children like to see their Christmas drawings hanging on walls or their Christmas ornaments hanging on the tree. That is why you are advised to let your children make their own Christmas decorations.

Stock car racing was really born out of the inclination of owners of modified stock (meaning: ‘off the sales lot’) cars to show off their vehicles, craftsmanship and driving expertise. The need to ‘soup up’ these stock cars came from the wish to escape the law enforcement agencies chasing them when they were running moonshine or said another way, bootlegging.

For the period of Prohibition, a lot of moonshine whiskey was being produced in isolated areas of the Appalachians and in particular the Allegheny Mountains, from where it was taken by private carriers in their own stock cars often to the southern states. Many of these drivers tuned up their cars in order to have more chance of escape.

When Prohibition was repealed in 1933, this bootlegging continued in order to avoid paying duty, but it gradually died out. However, the fire had already been lit and the drivers of these cars liked to race them in their free time for pride and reward, especially in the southern states and especially in North Carolina, where most of the stock car teams are still situated.

NASCAR was founded by Bill French in 1947 when he crafted the first set of uniform rules and a championship scoring system so that an overall winner of all the season’s races could be worked out.

However, the conditions in the early days were pretty crude. The cars were often second-hand and worn and the track was just earth and dust. Under these conditions the cars quickly fell apart, so NASCAR allowed competing cars to be customized or strengthened. Safety aspects for the drivers were also introduced. Nowadays, the NASCAR instruction manual clearly defines all the modifications that are allowed on contending cars.

These days it is a mistake to call NASCAR cars ‘stock cars’; they are anything but stock cars. NASCAR cars are hand made. The frames are different from stock cars in that they are manufactured from tubes for strength; the tin is sheet steel and the engine blocks begin as simply that – a bare block. What the mechanics do with it after that is a closely guarded secret.

The safety of the driver is also taken very earnestly. The driver is shielded from injury by a heavy roll cage. Strong round and square tubes make up the car’s framework, while thinner tubing is employed at the front and back ends to soak up the impact of crashes by crushing slowly. These are called clips and the front clip will also allow the engine to fall away under the car, rather than be forced straight back into the driver.

The bodies of NASCAR cars are not straightforward to make, often taking ten days to finish. However, NASCAR rules cover the general body shape and they provide thirty templates to make making a NASCAR car a bit easier.

But it does not end there. There are different regulations and templates for different types of races on different tracks, because the cars that race on superspeedways are not the same as those used for short tracks or endurance races.

July 24th, 2011The Wonders Of Hot Tubs

It is nice to soak in a hot tub, is it not? After a long day at the hamster wheel or sorting the family out – driving the kids to and from school and then to the scouts, sports club or music lessons. Being stuck in traffic on the way home or waiting in the queue at the supermarket, a long soak in a hot tub helps wash it all away.

Imagine then what a hot tub spa or Jacuzzi could do? Sitting in a hot spa tub with a long cool drink whilst half a dozen jets are blasting hot water and bubbles at you, massaging you gently, easing the stresses of the day away.

You could place one in the garden or in the bathroom. You could even buy a portable hot spa tub and move it into the garden in the summer and back inside in the winter. If you ask most individuals what they want to have in the way of home improvement, a swimming pool would probably be number one and a Jacuzzi number two.

There again, a lot of people do not have the room for a swimming pool and a Jacuzzi is a lot cheaper than a swimming pool as well. Water has a calming effect on individuals. Maybe it is a primeval memory of when we came out of the sea millions of years ago or maybe it is a more recent memory of being in the womb.

Whatever the reason or even mixture of reasons, individuals like to be in, around or on water, it relaxes and invigorates us. And frothing, bubbling water is even more relaxing and even more invigorating. Hence the popularity of hot tub spas.

Another reason might be gravity. All day long we are lumbering about, each foot step sending shock waves into our body and gravity pulling down on so that we feel every ounce of our weight, but as soon as we are in water, we are buoyed up and the effects of our weight and of gravity are felt far less.

In fact, up to 30% less. Additionally, we are ninety-odd percent water, so no surprise we feel tranquil in a hot tub. But that is not all that a soak in a hot tub does. It warms you right through, through to the marrow and that relieves minor aches and pains. The reduction in gravity is also said to be a relief to sufferers of arthritis.

There are possibly other reasons as well why individuals feel more relaxed in a tub of hot water, especially a whirlpool type spa tub, but one for me is that I will not get out of the tub for anything except to get another drink. Once I am in there, I do not care if the phone rings or the door bell chimes. The house would have to be on fire to get be me out before my skin looks like a wrinkled old prune.

Water can be dangerous particularly for families with small children, so each family with a hot tub ought to have some type of safety policy. This article will give some fundamental hot tub safety tips that can be adopted by families for the protection of its children and other members.

The first safety tip for hot tubs is never to leave children alone with a hot tub full of water. It is not a matter of whether the child can swim or not. Children play, fight and mess about. They could fall over, bang their head, be knocked unconscious and drown. There are a number of scenarios where this could happen and it is simply better to not give bad luck a chance. Do not allow children in a tub on their own or even anywhere close by it if it is full.

It is fairly usual to have an alcoholic drink whilst in the hot tub in the evening, but be wary not to become drunk. It is very dangerous to be out of control or even fall unconscious while you are in or in water and this goes doubly for a hot tub because they are so relaxing. The warm water, the soothing motion of the water and excess alcohol or other drugs could lead to you falling asleep and drowning.

However, it is not only while you are in the tub that being drunk is risky, being a bit wobbly is arguably even more perilous when you are getting in or out of the tub because you could fall, bump your head and drown while unconscious. Never let anyone use your hot tub if they are intoxicated or stoned unless there are sober or straight people there as well. This rule ought to be applied to those on medication as well.

Another danger, be it ever so slight is that of long hair being sucked into the filtration and cleaning system. If a young child with long hair had its hair sucked into the drain, it could have difficulty getting back above the water line, particularly if it panicked. Another reason never to leave children unsupervised in a pool or spa.

It is a good idea to know how to turn the spa’s motor or pump off quickly, so that if there is problem with hair entanglement, you can release the child by turning the pump off quickly which should release the child.

The electricity supply to the tub will be pretty well protected, especially if it was installed by a professional, but is worth checking every now and again that the cables are all still shielded from water, because as we all know, water and electricity do not mix well.

Also keep this in mind if you take any mains powered apparatus like a radio, TV or computer to the spa with you too. Locate all electrical devices well away from the spa and far enough away that they will not get splashed. They can be controlled by a remote device without any danger.

July 22nd, 2011Day Spas And Anti-Aging

Only children like the idea of getting older, most adults want to halt the aging process or even set it going backwards, if they could. However, as we all know, that is impossible, which is why they invented the next best thing, day spas, beauty salons and all the creams, lotions and treatments that they provide to endeavour to stem the results of aging.

And to be fair, some of them can do a pretty good job. In this piece, we will look at the services offered by day spas. A day spa is comparable to a beauty salon but with water events offered too. A day spa is an extended beauty salon and may be located in a larger place, especially if there is a swimming pool on site.

The main difference between a beauty salon and a day spa is that in a beauty salon, you are given all your treatments and then you leave, whereas in a day spa, you can hang about a bit in between treatments or remain in the pool or sauna longer than the allotted 15-20 minutes, if you want to.

A day spa is more relaxed and people tend to spend more time in them. There may even be a bar or a juice bar or / and a place to get light, health snacks like a salad or a vegetarian sandwich.

One of the most popular treatments at a spa is the massage. There are different types of massage, so it may take you a time to find your favourite if you have not had a massage before. Some of the types of massage frequently on offer are: Thai massage, Japanese massage, full body massage, oil massage and a foot massage. Additionally, some spas will use hot towels on your face to clean out pores and hot stones on your spine for deep heat.

You might also fancy a body wrap or a mud pack or even a mud bath! These treatments can really make your skin look younger by deep cleaning the pores of pollutants, make up and everyday grime. They make you feel ten years younger for a while, but they tighten up the skin and make you look younger for a time as well.

Perhaps you would prefer to concentrate on your hands and / or feet? Then you could have a full manicure and / or pedicure. These treatments could include a local massage, skin and nail treatments followed by an oil treatment. You could also be given a foot spa, which is like a mini-jacuzzi. A foot spa is fantastic if you have been on you feet all day. They might also use heated socks or mittens.

Half an hour in a hot tub, a jacuzzi or even a steam box are other services that may be there at day spas which you are unlikely to find in a beauty salon. When you arrive at the day spa, check out any cheap day packages. You can often save a bit of money on the individual treatments supplied.

Have you ever thought about getting away from it all and going on a huge detox mission? There is a great deal to be said for giving your body a break from all the pollution, smoke, noise, fast-paced lifestyle and stress and the substances that we use to handle that stress like alcohol, tobacco, coffee and worse. It is not so bad while your body is young, yet as it gets older, it becomes less capable of dealing with all the stuff we give it to deal with.

Costa Rica may sound like a long way to go to visit a spa or health resort, but it is just a flight away. The reason for selecting Costa Rica is because it is like a home from home for Americans, and the ambiance is a lot slower and more easy-going. There are lots of health spas and retreats to choose from in Costa Rica and a brief search on the Internet will reveal many of them.

Spanish is the foremost local language, but English is spoken by over ten percent of the adult population and tourist facilities are well developed in the form of exchanging currencies, restaurants and hotels. The country is unpolluted and environmentally friendly.

For instance, according to Wikipedia, Costa Rica is ranked third in the world and first among the Americas in terms of the 2010 Environmental Performance Index and in 2007, the government declared that it intended for Costa Rica to become the first carbon neutral country by 2021. Moreover, the Happy Planet Index ranks Costa Rica as number one in the world and also as the “greenest country in the world”.

Where better could you go to escape pollution and stress than a health spa or retreat in such a country? Many of the resorts offer stress reducing schemes that include methods of relaxation such as yoga, meditation, reiki, massage and tai-chi, although there are lots of places offering water sports such as diving, sailing and surfing. There is fantastic diving to be had in warm, clear water, which is teaming with flora and fauna.

Prices are low when compared with the United States. You can get a hotel or a room in a retreat for $25-$50 and up and a good meal will cost $2-$4. There are all sorts of food but particularly the types of food associated with Spanish and American cuisine. Vegetarians are well catered for as well and there is fish and other seafood in profusion for those who rather it to meat.

Some of the health spa resorts have rooms for you to stay in while others offer just day time courses. The retreat style resorts are live-in and many are similar to communes. The facilities vary from being ‘hippyish’ and pretty basic in some of the retreats to being as modern as anywhere in the world in the health spas, offering swimming pools, gymnasiums and hot tub spas.

All in all, if you are thinking of going abroad for a healthy, restful break, a holiday in Costa Rica should be on your short list.

There is no question that lighting has the biggest influence on atmosphere and. Soft lighting in a bedroom or at an cozy dinner results in a romantic atmosphere; bright, purposeful lighting in the office or kitchen shows that you mean business; dimmed lighting in the living room creates a calming atmosphere in which to watch a film or read a book.

Soft, back lighting behind flowers or a waterfall leads to a magical atmosphere, whereas severe floodlights turned on by a motion sensor would freeze most intruders in their tracks.

Getting the lighting wrong can have a seriously unfavourable effect on any room or occasion. Imagine a romantic dinner for two by candlelight and then imagine it by a naked 100 watt bulb hanging from the ceiling or a fluorescent tube.

It is said that the average household can save at least twenty-five percent on its electricity bills by using lighting more effectively and therefore more efficiently. More notably, you could save more than sixty percent, if you switch from the normal incandescent light bulbs to high-output compact fluorescent lights. Sixty percent is a massive saving for you, your country and your planet.

Here are some of the ways that you can achieve savings on the electricity you currently expend on lighting.

Insert dimmers wherever you use lighting. You can put a touch lamp dimmer into the wiring of any lamp, so that when you touch it, it cycles from low, to medium, to high, to off. You will be amazed how often you will dim the light once you are able to, particularly in the case of desk or table lamps and standard floor lamps.

In a similar vein is the touch switch that you can utilize to control lighting that traditionally hangs from the ceiling. You will be able to dim the lights in any room and on the patio or deck too.

Photosensitive devices turn whatever they regulate off or on when the sun comes up. This is useful if you have motion-activated anti-intruder lighting. There is absolutely no need for it in the daytime, but you do not want to have to remember to switch it off in the mornings and reactivate it every night either.

Another use could be to turn the water fountain off when it gets dark. All of these photosensitive switches can have over-ride switches too. These photosensitive devices will practically half the cost of running the systems to which they are attached.

It is very easy to make quite substantial savings if you put your mind to it. Just rearranging your furniture to take maximum advantage of natural light can help a lot too. Sitting near a window or in the garden to read the newspaper is much better than having to put the kitchen light on to read it in there.

In the evening it is better to switch off all the main lights in the living room if you are watching television or reading a book and place one standard floor lamp just to one side behind you. It is plenty to read by or to save your eyes from the strain of watching TV in the dark.

It is important for everyone, even babies, to have somewhere safe and secure to sleep. I say ‘even babies’ because it is simple to think that babies are not quite conscious, but closer contact makes the observer soon realize that babies have a sense of security. For instance, they might cry if one stranger comes near and smile if a different one comes near. A bit like animals, they have instincts.

Well, they are animals and so are we adults, so that should not come as much of a surprise either. Babies require warmth and softness and something akin to a nest. Obviously, parents have realized this for thousands of generations and the way we have dealt with that requirement for thousands of years is by wrapping babies up and putting them in cribs or cots.

In other words somewhere safe and secure. Even though they do not know it, they sense that they are in a walled enclosure where animals cannot see them easily and they cannot drop out of either. a crib or cot permits a baby to sleep comfortably as if it is hidden from peril.

However, as they get older, they become more adventurous, which is exactly why they require ‘walls’ around them, which make them feel safe and frustrated at the same time. This is obviously the time when toddlers are at their most vulnerable, because they want to explore but are not very aware of the dangers of the world. Every parent worries about their children wandering off.

Once a child can walk and climb is the time when it has to be removed from a crib that is off the ground to a safer bed, from which they cannot climb out and fall.

These beds are often known as toddlers’ beds, but now the sides have to be high enough for them not to be able to break out of – a type of pen.

Some cribs can be converted and although they might seem more expensive at first, they can be cheaper in the long run.

It is one of the most hazardous times for babies and one of the most worrying times for recent parents too. Putting the toddler’s pen in the parents’ room is an easy trap to fall into, because it can make the eventual necessary break moving the child from the parents’ room to the nursery all the more a problem when the time ultimately comes.

However, that time will come when the child has to sleep in a room of its own either with other brothers and sisters or not, but the fact of the matter is that parents have to have their sleep as well so that they are alert enough to both earn money to support their family and be awake enough to watch over their offspring.

Patch work quilts are timeless, are they not? Patch work quilts have been manufactured for hundreds of years, because in essence a patch work quilt is manufactured from off-cuts of fabric. A housewife would create a set of curtains and store the off-cuts. Then she would create some clothes and keep the off-cuts. And so on and so on until she had enough off-cuts to make a quilt, if she required one for her household.

This old-style of constructing bedspreads or quilts always manages to look conventional and contemporary at the same time. A specialist variety of this old-style is the American tradition of women embroidering off-cuts of cloth in order to create a quilt as an excuse for a social life. These days there is more money floating about in society and the patches on the quilt can be more personal and more complicated.

There is also a great deal more choice of fabric about than there ever was, so it is not always necessary to embellish a swatch of cloth to make it one’s own. Someone may always use blue and white stripes as a signature or green and black squares for instance. Most individuals make a patch work quilt of uniform squares, but others will use squares with curved corners and even rectangles, rhombuses, circles and triangles.

Some patch work quilters like to select a theme whilst others are happy to let numerous participants sew in any patch that they like. There are also patch block patterns. The four patch scheme is almost certainly the most common, but the nine patch scheme is also fairly common.

A four patch scheme is accomplished by dividing the quilt into equal squares and then bisecting every square across the top and down the sides. Each block of four squares can then have a theme. The same goes for a nine patch scheme, but divide each large block on the quilt with two vertical and two horizontal lines making nine small squares in every large square.

You can design your quilt pattern on graph paper if you like. To do this, first work out how big you want your quilt to be. Then draw that on graph paper and divide your graph into the number of that you want. Novices may be better off using larger squares in the beginning and then increasing the number of squares by reducing their size.

Begin with a four block scheme and move up to a nine and then twelve block scheme. You can repeat the swatches of cloth at regular or irregular intervals and you can change the orientation of the swatch in your patch work quilt too. A patch work quilt can be well planned or completely random. Well planned quilts can be fairly dazzling, but even random quilts look fantastic.

Raccoons, they are so cute to watch from the inside of your home. However, when humans come into contact with them in their natural habitat, it is self-evident that they are not an animal one would want for a pet. They are mammals and are known to be nocturnal and omnivorous.

Now, because they are omnivores, they are scavengers too. So they will find a way into your backyard and patio. If a raccoon finds dog or cat food on a garden patio, it will not hesitate to eat it.

When a raccoon knows where to find a free meal, it will come back for more. In fact, a raccoon with bring its family with it to make the most of a free meal. The raccoon is most likely to consume nuts such as walnuts and acorns in its own natural habitat. If, on the other hand, a raccoon wanders into a suburban setting, like the garden of a home, it will eat whatever is on the ground or in a rubbish container.

The raccoon is known for scrambling into, and overturning, waste cans to search for waste food for their next meal. Raccoons were first spotted in a city in Cincinnati in the 1920?s and then were seen in such cities as San Francisco, Chicago and Toronto in the 1950?s.

The raccoon is chiefly to be found in North American states and territories such as Panama, Bahamas, Cuba and Jamaica., but what’s more in Europe too.

Raccoons have a good memory and have been studied by a variety of scientists past and present. With their memory and intelligence, it is no surprise that they can recall where they discovered their last meal and will return to that same region.

If a raccoon knows where to return for a meal, it will, more likely than not, endeavor to get into the home it is stealing food from. If a raccoon is clever enough to know where to go back for a meal, with family in tow, it will find a route to into a home and search out a food supply.

When a raccoon is found in the backyard, or inside a home, it is not wise to try and catch it. The best a homeowner can do is shoo the raccoon, or its family, away and call the animal control in your city. As cute and furry as raccoons look, they are not to be touched or picked up.

A raccoon is a wild animal and will do whatever it takes to protect itself and its family. It is also vital to realize that raccoons carry sickness. A raccoon carries rabies and will pass it on to a pet or human by a bite. The rabies virus is in the raccoon?s saliva.

As the raccoon becomes ?comfortable? visiting the outside of a home, it will attempt to get inside if it sees a way in through a back door or attic window. As stated above, raccoons are intelligent and fantastic natural climbers. They will have no problem climbing up the side of a home, look for an open window into an attic and climb in.

If a raccoon has its ?kits? in tow, they will all find their way into the attic and create not only a lot of noise, but will do their best to get into the home to search for their next meal.

AV software or anti-virus software plays an vital role in detecting, preventing, and removing malware, computer viruses, computer worms, Trojan horses, spyware and adware.

It is true that the Net has proved to be an excellent means of communication, but at the same time it is an simple target for computer viruses and worms that can cause great chaos to a networking system.

Computer viruses and worms have the capability to adjust, delete and steal data, with worms also having the capacity to multiply and spread themselves to cause great trouble.

The necessity of installing AV software is urgent because it is fairly possible that a virus or worm could have been in a computer a long time before one realizes it.

This could leave your computer infected a long while before you take action for its removal. So the proper functioning and storage of essential and confidential data requires the latest version of the software which can help to not just keep your personal computer clean and uninfected, but would also inform you of threats where prompt action is desireable.

A number of strategies can be used in anti-virus protection using signature based detection involving searching for known patterns of data within executable code. But it is vital to know that this does not always prove effective if the computer is infected with new malware.

There are constantly new updates made for the software to counter such so-called zero-day threats. Some of them use heuristics to foresee new dangers.

Generic signatures, one heuristic approach, has proved effective in identifying new versions or variants of existing viruses by looking for known malicious code, or slight versions of such code, in files. Some AV software has, in addition, the ability to test what a file will do by running it in a sandbox. It can also evaluate what it does to see if it will carry out any malicious actions.

The necessity of installing AV software on your computer for Internet usage arises out of a requirement for computer safety and the protection of vital documents and files that could become damaged or lost forever. The two main methods that AV software works involve, firstly, that it scans for all the viruses that are specified in the virus dictionary.

Then it warns the user, after having discovered them, of their suspicious nature like port monitoring, spyware or data capturing. Then it takes action to be rid of infected files either automatically or on instruction from the user. Most decent AV software will update these files automatically, which is achieved by having the software connect via the Internet to the vendors? server for the daily downloading and installation of the latest virus patterns.

I would say that anti-virus software is without doubt crucial for the effective use of computers and the Internet, but it does not come without drawbacks such as the slowing down of the computer. Along with impairing the computer’s speed, it could give prompts and make decisions that are a problem for laymen to understand, thus leading to confusion and possible security breaches.

In addition, AV software that employs heuristic detection may sometimes not be able to achieve the right balance between false positives and false negatives, with both of them proving destructive. Lastly AV software running at the extremely sensitive kernel level of the operating system creates a potential path of attack.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many topics, but is currently concerned with the network antivirus software. If you have an interest in such software, please go over to our website now at Computer Antivirus Software

Everyone ought to know fundamental First Aid techniques, but it is especially important for those who participate in potentially more dangerous sports or activities such as hunting. There are all types of things that can happen to you while hunting.

Besides getting shot, you could cut yourself while skinning an animal, you could be attacked by an animal, you could fall and break a leg or you could suffer a routine heart attack that could have happened anywhere.

However, what makes all these accidents more dangerous when you are hunting is the likelihood that you will be located miles from anywhere whilst it occurs. There is no one to turn to except your companion. No ambulances, no doctors and no hospitals for tens of miles.

The first thing that everyone ought to know is CPR, which stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which is an emergency procedure consisting of external cardiac massage and artificial respiration. It is vital to know CPR techniques for everyone not merely hunters.

You can learn CPR at several local institutions including the hospital, the fire station, some schools, some scouting organizations and some other institutions like the Boys’ Brigade or the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade.

These institutions can usually teach you over CPR if you want, such as what to do in a crisis. There are certain procedures that are common to most if not all crisis situations. For example, the first rule is to always take care of yourself first. Then assess the situation and make the area safe for yourself and anyone who may come into it.

This might sound selfish, but you are no help to anyone if you permit yourself to become injured and the rescue services will be very cautious if the area is unsafe when they get there. Then either begin first aid procedures or call the rescue services depending on the situation.

Healthcare staff teach the ABC method of applying First Aid. ABC stands for ‘Airway, Breathing and Circulation’. So, first look in the mouth and at the throat. Look for and remove any blockages such as blood, dentures or foreign bodies.

Then check for breathing. If the patient has ceased breathing, endeavour to resuscitate him or her because the brain cannot survive longer than a couple of minutes without oxygen.

Next check the heart beat. If it has stopped endeavour to get it going again. If there is copious bleeding from a wound, try to staunch the bleeding by applying pressure to it through a clean cloth. Get help if there are a number of wounds but apply tourniquets to arms and legs that are bleeding badly. You can use a belt or stockings as make-shift tourniquets.

If the patient has experienced a serious fall, the first rule is not to move the person. You can cause serious injury to someone with broken bones by moving them. You can even cause paralysis, so if someone has fallen, enquire whether they can move their fingers and toes (a sign that the spine is probably undamaged) and then phone the rescue services.

Two of the best safety rules while going hunting, are to tell someone where you are going and never to go alone. If you hunt with the same person regularly, why not both go to a First Aid course together?

Do you go to a local spa occasionally or are you thinking of pampering yourself in the near future? A massage or, even and a sauna makes a terrific difference to how you feel that day and that sensation can last a number of days. You feel livelier, invigorated, up for anything that the world can throw at you. Those are good enough reasons for going to your local spa once or twice a week on their own, |but I will give you five good reasons for buying a spa day package.

Firstly, spa day packages are carefully planned series of treatments designed to compliment each other. One package might be for your skin and pores another on precise beauty treatments like eyes, hair, hands and feet, while others might concentrate on cellulose, thighs and buttocks.

In short, if you take a spa day package, you can have a set of treatments to help resolve a difficulty that has been suggested by an expert. Rather than guessing what might be good for your precise condition yourself, a package will lead you down a well-trodden path which might include a traditional massage, massage with hot stones, aromatherapy, a facial, a herbal or mud wrap, hot towels, exfoliation or numerous other treatments.

Secondly, you will be able to decide on a package that suits what you would like. For example, if you are on your feet all day, you might want a spa day package that concentrates on sore feet. A full pedicure, in fact, including a foot massage with oils, nail treatment and a long soaking in a foot spa of herbal water.

Thirdly, there is a very good likelihood that the price of the spa day package will be a great deal less than the combined price of all he treatments if you were to buy them separately. In other words, spa day packages ought to be discounted and if you go with a friend or two, maybe you can ask for a further discount for a group booking. Who knows? If you do not ask, you do not get!

Fourthly, a day spa package is like a mini-holiday. Spending several hours in a relaxing atmosphere with specialists pampering you is a wonderful experience. Most people simply do not want to go away when they are getting towards the end of their day spa package.

Fifthly, not just that, but the experience is so good that it becomes addictive. You will want to go back again and either take the same set of treatments or try a different spa day package. Try it and see. A day spa package puts a whole new meaning to the phrase: ‘I am only popping out for a massage’.

July 10th, 2011Swimming Pool Safety

If you have a swimming pool, you have to be aware of the safety aspects regarding that pool. There is no counter-argument, that is one of the legal responsibilities of an owner of a swimming pool . You are going to get people coming around who cannot swim; guests who have eaten or drunken too much and should not swim; children and skinny-dipping teenage intruders and you have to supply a safe environment in which to swim for all or them or decline access.

The first area of swimming pool safety to tackle is the denial of access and the easiest way of doing this is the assembly of a security fence. It will deny access to passing children, interlopers and friends who came around to see you on the off-chance when you were not in.

There are thousands of drownings by misadventure in backyard swimming pools every year – most of them are children and drunks, who would still be alive today, if the pool had been locked up.

If you have your own children who cannot swim, get them taught as soon as you can and drill some safety routines into them. For example, they must never get in the pool without an adult supervising them and they must always wear flotation devices, which means that you should always have flotation devices on hand.

You will require waist rings, arm bands and life jackets. Those for use in a swimming pool by children are not costly and can be inflatable. It is also a good idea to have some pieces of styrofoam floating about just in case someone gets tired unexpectedly.

Make sure that there is always a capable swimmer on hand who knows basic First Aid, especially artificial respiration with particular reference to drowning. In fact, why not take the whole family down to the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade and all get your life-savers certificate? The least you should have is a proper life belt – ocean-going – on a rope that is long enough to reach anywhere in your pool and tie off the loose end.

It might be possible to get away with not having a security fence, if you use an above ground swimming pool, but you will have to check with the local authorities on that one. You will also have to take away the access ladders when it is not in use. Forgetting to do so could equate to criminal negligence if anyone were to drown in your pool.

Swimming pool safety is primarily about saving lives but it is also about the peace of mind of the owner of the swimming pool. If someone were to drown in your pool and you knew that you had not done everything within your power to prevent it, you would almost certainly carry that burden of guilt with you for the rest of your life, especially if it was a child and even more so if it was your child or the child of one of your guests.

The Olympic Games are a sporting occasion played every two years at international level. A number of competitions are arranged where thousands of athletes from around the globe take part. The history of this immense sporting competition dates back to the 5th Century AD.

The Olympic Movement classified the Olympic Games into the Winter Olympic Games, the Summer Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games and the Youth Olympic Games during the 20th and 21st Century.

The Paralympic Games are organized for after the Olympic Games and these are for disabled athletes. The Youth Olympic Games are for teenagers and were first held in 2010. The Olympic Charter defines the structure of the International Olympic Committee i.e. the governing body of the Olympic Games.

The Olympic flag carries five interlocking circles of red, blue, yellow, green and black and was introduced in 1920. The Olympic motto says ?Swifter, Higher, and Stronger?.

Some of the sports events held in the Summer Olympics are baseball, badminton, basketball, cycling, boxing, diving, soccer, sailing, rowing, hockey, water polo, wrestling, swimming, weightlifting, tennis etc.

Games played during the Winter Olympics are skiing, ice hockey, skating, ski jumping, curling, free style skiing, cross country skiing, down hill skiing,

A gold medal is presented to every first winner while silver and bronze medals are presented to the second and third winners respectively. Victory Diplomas are the certificates which are given to some top winners of every sport. The Olympic Flame is lit according to a custom associated with these games.

A new flame is lit for each Olympics in the Ancient Olympic Stadium in Olympia, Greece. This flame is taken to the host country where the games are to be held.

The flame is carried over the whole host country by individuals walking, running, scuba diving, riding, and using other types of transport. Actually, a number of torches are carried around the country where the games are held.

The sizeable Olympic torch is lit by the last runner carrying the torch. This substantial torch keeps burning throughout the games. The flame is put out at the end of the games during the closing ceremony. A new torch is designed for every Olympics.

Just about all the nations of the world are represented at these games. National and international media coverage provides a opportunity to unknown athletes to be famous. The host city and country gets a chance to showcase their country to the world.

The host country organizes and funds the whole event. Over 13,000 athletes compete in the Summer and Winter Olympics in more than 400 activities.

Many challenges are faced when organizing this mega event. Some of the major challenges are terrorism, bribery of officials, boycotts and doping. The host city is usually chosen seven years ahead of the Olympic Games.

The United States has had the chance to host four Summer and four Winter Olympics. No other nation has hosted so many Olympic games.

The next Summer Olympics are scheduled to be held in London in 2012. Women are being particularly promoted to participate in these games. Female athletes will be able to take part in all the men?s sports in the coming Olympics for the first time. Women?s boxing has also been introduced thereby ending gender discrimination.

You would probably be surprised to know that hybrid cars have been with us since the very earliest days of automotive history, but you will not be astonished to be told that the technology has come on in leaps and bounds for the last ten years. In fact, the technology in hybrid cars has reached the degree where fuel consumption in a hybrid can be half that of in a conventional internal combustion engine only car.

Half or even less than half under sure circumstances like driving in town, especially in busy traffic. In fact, when a hybrid is either cruising on electric or stopping and starting in heavy traffic, there will be no use of petrol or diesel whatsoever, which means that you are driving ‘without cost’.

I put without cost in parentheses because a hybrid vehicle is still substantially dearer than a car with a traditional engine. However, even given the added cost of a hybrid vehicle, you can save that excess price over the average life time of the vehicle because of the saving on fuel. Of course, the higher the price of fuel, the sooner you will recover your extra initial outlay on the cost of the hybrid.

Maybe you are thinking that hybrid vehicle manufacturers are profiteering on the backs of car drivers who want to do their bit for the environment. Well, you would not be alone in thinking that, but the cost of developing hybrid technology was and still is costly and someone has to pay for it.

That means you and me, the end-users. Well, that is standard, yet in some countries, the government has stepped in to subsidize individuals who buy a hybrid vehicle, because governments all around the world are under an obligation to reduce their country’s carbon footprint.

That means that now is as good a time as any to purchase a hybrid vehicle.

There are other reasons why a hybrid is costly though. The hybrid actually has two engines. A hybrid has a traditional engine run on traditional fuels, and it also has an electric engine which runs off costly batteries. It is not that you have to replace the batteries as with a radio. The batteries are costly because they are very heavy duty rechargeable units.

The technology for recharging these batteries is also ground-breaking. The car makes use of traditional alternators to recharge them but it also uses braking power to recharge them as well. Not just that but the car’s on board computer switches between the two motors automatically, depending on the amount of power that is required by the driver.

Keep an eye on the hybrid car market because prices are declining and coupled with subsidies, the time to buy a hybrid car may come sooner than you think.

If you want to redecorate, you should be thinking about the textiles that you will use in your redecorating scheme. There are quite a few fabrics that can play a role in a redecoration project, such as carpets, some wall papers, such as flock, furnishings, cushions, lamp shades and wall hangings like tapestries and embroideries.

You can use the fabrics in these items to fashion a decoration theme over any other set of items. You can purchase old furniture, but it is expensive, you can buy old paintings, but they are expensive, but fabrics can be new yet still convey different atmospheres for little money. Think about the fabrics and colours that you would require to convey primitive, Eastern, Hispanic, Victorian or contemporary themes.

Let’s say that you would like to decorate your home in a Victorian style. It is the case that it would be right to have some old furniture, but what will really make the style scream ‘Victorian’ is the textiles. You have to think about Victorian houses: they were fairly large (unless you would like to live in a hovel), and they were drafty.

This meant that the fabrics were weighty to hold back drafts. You could hang flock wallpaper, have heavy, lined curtains, lamp shades with tassels and weighty bedding with a real eiderdown or patchwork quilt.

The funny thing is that although Victorian fabrics were very heavy, they tried to make them look very feminine, or perhaps that was why they tried to make them look more feminine. However, men provided the money and women ran the home in those days, so that might be why as well.

Therefore, there were lace edgings, lace trims, tassels, beading, velvet and brocade. Embroidery exam pieces can sometimes be picked up fairly cheaply , but they are often handed down through families as well.

A modern style or theme would have lots of bright and frequently contrasting colours. An extreme variation of contemporary style is minimalist with plenty of black and white but with maybe one splash of yellow in a corner somewhere. This style can be hard to achieve, can be unsettling, but can be dazzling as well. It is suggestive of the Sixties.

Some people endeavor to recreate an Eastern or Oriental style, but you have to be cautious because otherwise you will end up with something that no Easterner would recognize. A bit like Charlie Chan and western style curries. You will be told to use pictures and figurines of elephants, tigers, dragons, carp and geese or ducks. This is all very well if you want to persuade your Western friends that you have an Oriental theme of decoration, but few Orientals would recognize it.

It is very difficult to get this theme looking authentic unless you are from the Far East or you get an Easterner in to help you. Jades and silks could form a part of this styles along with some figurines. Be very wary of trying to imitate a style you know nothing of.

July 8th, 2011Ideas For Baby Showers

Baby showers are well-liked events, particularly in America. A baby shower is usually given or hosted by a friend of the expectant mother, mostly before the birth but occasionally after it as well. The point of the baby shower is to collect presents for the child and its parents, which is why family of the mother find it awkward to organize the baby shower themselves – it seems too much like begging.

If you can get a friend to arrange a baby shower for you or if someone offers to do it, the invitations should be sent out a month or two before the birth day, so that the mother is not in too much uneasiness and is not likely to drop the baby during the party.

It is nice to have handmade baby shower invitations. There are two ways that you can do this: either design the invitation card yourself and have it printed out or choose a template at the printers. Both ideas give satisfactory results.

If you have the invitations printed to a standard size, you can buy cheap envelopes at a budget stationery office, but if you go for some weird size, ask the printer to provide the envelopes too.

Standard details like the date, the time, the venue, your name and the baby’s name can all be printed but you will have to write or type the recipient’s name in personally. Add your phone number too so that people can ask questions if they have any. If you would like the party (and the presents) to have a theme, you ought to state that on the invitation. Perhaps the card could be in the same theme as well.

In fact, if you would like to go down that path, you could download a fitting image off the Net, say, a scene from Peter Rabbit, and give that to the printer so that they can print that onto your card.

People are very busy these days, so make certain you give your friends at least a month to book you in and get a fitting present for the shower. If you would like to be fairly certain how many people are coming, enclose a stamped, self-addressed postcard in with the invitation, so that they can let you know easily.

If you are looking for items to do during the party, you could get people to suggest names for your baby and guess the sex or weight of it as well. You could use a cross on a chain as a pendant to see if it the movement predicts a boy or girl and how many individuals get the same movement. You could also discuss themes for the child’s nursery after it is born, one for if it is a boy and one for if it is a boy.
