Location: you will require somewhere to carry out your detailing or valeting. It is nice to have a yard, but it costs a lot, while you are only beginning, so it may be better to provide a mobile service. You could detail drivers’ cars when they are at home or at work.
If you work out of the back of a van, you will almost certainly require different equipment to that that you would require if you had a yard. You could have a pick-up or a substantial van modified to carry a generator and a tank of water.
Promotion: you will have to let people know what services you provide. Drop cards and leaflets in shops, schools and offices. Another big customer might become car and truck auctioneers and garages.
Working Capital: you will need a small amount of working capital, but that depends on alternatives you make for your business. A mobile business will be cheaper to set up. You will also need subsistence money for yourself and an advertising budget.
You will also have to do some research into your competition to see what level of service they supply and how much that costs.
Once you have these details, write a business plan and take it to your bank to seek a loan. If your figures stack up and you present your concept well, you might get a loan. Otherwise you could go into partnership with a friend or member of your family.
