People are proud of their cars, and image is important to lots of people too. There is more kudos in driving a stylish looking car than a filthy one. Moreover, the resell value of such a large investment like a car has to be protected and this means frequent maintenance. However, many individuals just do not have the time to wash their cars properly, leave alone detail it.

This makes a decent business opportunity: there is plenty of demand, lots of chance and low start up costs. You could start a business in auto detailing and make profits from auto detailing. This new business venture could be run from a plot of land or the back of a van – that is you could detail cars for their owners in their own driveway. There is billions in auto detailing, or car valeting, as it is called in other countries.

So, if you were going to give making money from auto detailing due consideration what are the foremost things that you would require to be successful? We will look at the foremost ones in the rest of this piece.

Knowledge of Cars: this is not as much of a problem as it may sound. You do not require technical information of cars, but you need to know all their nooks and crannies. You also need to know how to lift carpets and replace them.

This is not rocket science and you can learn as you go, but it is worth practicing on the cars of your friends and relatives first.

Location: you will require somewhere to carry out your detailing or valeting. It is nice to have a yard, but it costs a lot, while you are only beginning, so it may be better to provide a mobile service. You could detail drivers’ cars when they are at home or at work.

If you work out of the back of a van, you will almost certainly require different equipment to that that you would require if you had a yard. You could have a pick-up or a substantial van modified to carry a generator and a tank of water.

Promotion: you will have to let people know what services you provide. Drop cards and leaflets in shops, schools and offices. Another big customer might become car and truck auctioneers and garages.

Working Capital: you will need a small amount of working capital, but that depends on alternatives you make for your business. A mobile business will be cheaper to set up. You will also need subsistence money for yourself and an advertising budget.

You will also have to do some research into your competition to see what level of service they supply and how much that costs.

Once you have these details, write a business plan and take it to your bank to seek a loan. If your figures stack up and you present your concept well, you might get a loan. Otherwise you could go into partnership with a friend or member of your family.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on several topics, but is now involved with how to get alloy wheels and tyre packages.

Diving is the globally recognized sport of jumping into water from a platform. Sometimes the divers jump whilst performing acrobatics. Diving is not only a recreational pastime but also a part of the Olympic Games. Diving is recognized as one of the most well-liked Olympic Games because it is so spectacular.

Underwater diving is one of the most common types of diving. There are two variations of underwater diving.

1.	Going underwater with some breathing equipment. This kind of diving is known as Scuba diving.

2.	Going underwater without any breathing apparatus. It is a breath-held diving and this kind of diving is called free diving.

Diving can also be categorized on the grounds of purpose. There can be two forms of diving on the basis of purpose.

1.	Recreational diving is a diving activity done for the sake of recreation and pleasure. It is usually done with the aid of scuba apparatus which is meant to provide help in breathing.

2.	Professional diving is a diving activity performed for the sake of money. The most advanced kind of professional diving is called commercial diving. Professional divers e.g. scientists perform experiments underwater and discover hidden truths concerning nature. The underwater examination of ships etc. is also done by professional divers.

Special training is needed to be a professional diver. This preparation does not just include physical training but also some classroom work. Special focus in the training is on first aid events. Trainees are taught about decompression and other diving related injuries and how to act under such scenarios.

For a long time, it was too expensive for regular folk to get training. Now technological advancements have brought costs down for scuba diving. Scuba diving has become a popular leisure activity and dive stores near such diving locations offer training and related equipment for the aid of the divers.

All around the world, the number of divers is raising. The use of rebreathers is also raising vastly. A depth of 30 to 40 meters is deemed fit for recreational diving.

If the water is deeper than this limit, it makes it a problem to dive with recreational diving equipment. In such depths, professional training and apparatus is needed for survival.

The main apparatus needed for scuba diving or free-diving are diving mask, swimfins, swimsuit, diving cylinder and regulator. A diving mask makes it easier to see clearly in water.

Divers who take part in competition diving have the same characteristics as gymnast and dancers. They must have the pre-requisites for diving i.e. flexibility, strength and awareness of air. There is some skill to diving.

A diver has to be very clear about his trajectory and the magnitude of his momentum as he cannot easily change it during the dive. Diving is enjoyable as well as a useful physical exercise.

Are you feeling a bit jaded? A bit run-down or even worn out? Do you feel like you ought to have a holiday, yet you do not have the time or do not have the money just now? Well, a trip to a day spa might be the answer. Most women have been to a beauty salon and so have some men, yet fewer individuals of both sexes have been to a day spa.

A day spa is an extended version of a beauty salon. The extra amenities normally involve water in some way or oil – something liquid. However, day spas resemble beauty salons in that they usually offer all of the treatments that a beauty salon offers and pampering is the prime concern.

It is the pampering as much as anything that can wash your cares away for a time and make you feel as if you have recently come back from a short vacation. Four hours at a day spa can be more relaxing (and far better for you) than a weekend away on the town.

If you have never been to a spa before, it is worth doing a local search on the computer and seeing what web sites come up. A good web site ought to list the treatments that they offer, their prices and any package offers (frequently known as day packages). It ought to also mention whether you need to book up or merely call in.

The prices might appear outrageous at first, yet it is worth checking how long the procedure takes and whether there are any luxurious preparations or oils involved, because they may be costly. Day packages can reduce the cost of a number of related treatments fairly significantly. If you still find it costly, maybe you could plan a trip for a few weeks in advance.

Something else that you should factor in while thinking about day spas and costs is the tranquility. Most spas have strict rules concerning noise. So, no small children, no shouting, no cell phones or pagers, no radios or Walkmen, just soothing background music. Everything in a day spa is meant to make you feel pampered, cared for, less stressed and much more relaxed.

So what services can you expect to find at a day spa? Well, everything that you would expect to find at a beauty salon for a start off, so that includes manicure, pedicures, hair styling, facials and make-up or make-overs.

However, a spa ought to also supply massages of various types like a full body massage, an oil massage, a Thai massage, a foot massage and maybe others too. They might also have a steam box or a sauna and / or Turkish Baths, mud wraps, herbal wraps, mud baths and even flotation chambers. Many spas provide aroma therapy and offer complimentary healthy drinks like fruit and vegetable juices too. Some may even have a swimming pool as well.

Detoxes feature quite often at most spas and some might offer colonic irrigation as well. However, the best value for money are the day packages or one-off specials, which allow you to combine a number of treatments for one discounted payment.

We all are bitten by insects from time to time – we are just too plentiful a source of food for insects to disregard. However, some individuals react quite badly to an insect bite, while others do not appear be all that much bothered by them. The most common insect bites are from mosquitoes, ants, fleas and gnats or midges and now bed bugs are coming back as well..

If you are not excessively allergic to these bites there is no need to do anything about the bite itself although you may want to eradicate an infection of ants, fleas and bed bugs. Mosquito and other insect bites usually produce an itchy, red swelling, which ought to go down within one to three days, although some people do have them for weeks.

We say that insects bite, but it is not always true. It is slapdash speech. Some insects bite (like ants), some insects sting (like wasps) and other insects suck blood (like mosquitoes, fleas and bed bugs). Most people are more likely to display a reaction to blood sucking although the stings are the most agonizing.

Blood-sucking insects squirt some spittle into you through a pore before sucking blood. This spittle contains an anticoagulant to make the blood flow more liberally and it might contain an antiseptic and an analgesic too to ease the pain of a possible infection or reaction to the bite. It is this saliva that causes the swelling and itching in most instances.

This is like an allergic reaction, but doctors do not consider it to be an allergy. Some individuals truly are allergic to the bites of blood-sucking or stinging insects and they might need to be hospitalized. They suffer much more than an itchy swelling for a day or two. You will soon know if you are allergic. You may even pass out or go into a coma.

Anyway, the main concern for most of us after being ‘bitten’ is to relieve the itching and reduce the swelling. It seems that some things work better on some people than on others, so it is a case of testing different things until you find one that suits you and the sort of bite that is afflicting you.

Tiger Balm works on most insect bites for most people, but some individuals just have to rub a slice of lemon or an ice cube on the bite to make the bite more tolerable. If you are going to treat mosquito and other insect bites, you ought to do it as soon as you can after having been bitten. Strive to get that spittle out so that it does not have time to trigger your bodies natural defences.

Some lotions seem to neutralize the saliva whilst others seem to pucker the skin enough to squirt it back out. If the saliva is back outside it cannot induce an infection although most infections like this are the result of scratching with unclean finger nails

The difficulty with all-purpose insect repellent is that no one insect repellent will repel all insects. There are so many different species of insects that nothing will stop them all. Some insects in some areas for instance have been particularly targeted, like bed bugs in New York, and so they have developed a tolerance to repellents that does not exist elsewhere.

This is not such a difficulty if you know the region where you are staying, because you will know the most prevalent insect pests in your region, but what about if you go on vacation? You might take a box of your favourite mosquito ointment to Acapulco on your dream vacation just to find that there are no mosquitoes there but that the sand flies are murderous.

Mosquitoes are not really difficult in Scotland, but midges are in the summer and mosquito repellent does not have an effect on midges (or sand flies) even though they get up to the same sort of monkey business. The key is local information. Before you go anywhere endeavour to do some research on local nuisance insects.

In fact, unless you know that your favourite mosquito repellent works where you are going, there is not a lot of point taking it with you, since the locals will already have the best repellents for their own specific local problem insects. The only potential exception is a cream with a high percentage of DEET.

It may be illegal where you are going to sell a cream containing over 25% DEET, but you feel safer with 50%. I know that I would feel far less at risk with 50% DEET, if I were going to Gambia, where the world’s most toxic mosquitoes lives.

Another insecticide that kills pretty much all insects (except bed bugs) is permethrin, but you may not be able to get it where you are going. The difference between DEET and permethrin is that DEET deters mosquitoes by baffling their senses – basically, you slip under their RADAR – but permethrin kills insects.

This confusion works for lots of insects that detect their prey by carbon dioxide emissions like ticks and possibly bed bugs. Permethrin is not so effective against bed bugs because they have a waxy coat which does not allow the chemical to actually reach their skin, where it would kill them.

This waxy coat can be removed, but you will not have time if on holiday to do it. The overall best solution to most, but not all insect pests is putting DEET at around 25-35% on your skin, which will give you five to eight hours protection and spaying permethrin on your clothes. Permethrin can last up to six months and can survive several washes.

If you are sitting outdoors it is a good idea to hang up a bug zapper – the form that has an ultraviolet lamp inside a highly charged electric grill. A handheld racquet style bug zapper is also good for clearing a tent or bedroom of a couple of mosquitoes or flies before retiring.

If you like to sit outdoors in the summer, you almost certainly have a bit of a garden, patio or deck that you like to relax on of a summer’s evening. With a few flowers for colour and fragrance, it makes a perfect place to relax. Add a water feature and a cold drink and I am away.

That is until five or six o’ clock, at which time the light begins to fade and the mosquitoes come out. They spoil it for me or at least they used to until I found neat little tricks to keep the mosquitoes at bay – out of my yard and into someone else’s. Not that I wish mosquitoes on my friends, but they will go somewhere else, if they do not come to me.

The first thing to do is learn a bit concerning the mosquito. Mosquitoes are not really very strong fliers and they are easily injured and easily blown off course. Therefore, most of the mosquitoes you meet in your garden were born there. Some individuals say tht mosquitoes do not fly over a couple of metres from where they were hatched.

They like to lay their eggs in still water and it need not be that much. Millions of mosquitoes are born in still water that collects in the leaves of living plants. Now, I am not recommending that you cut all your plants down, but you did ought to clean up any old junk in the garden that can retain water.

You can fill in holes and indentations in paths, stow away watering cans and unused flower pots, clean blocked gutters, clear away fallen leaves and maybe think about the flowers that you are purchasing next time you are in the garden centre. If you have a water feature, make certain that there are fish in it that eat insects – some do not.

The next thing to do is find out which plants mosquitoes do not like and they do have their preferences, just as we do. Mosquitoes abhor anything that smells of lemons. So, you can plant, lemon balm, citronella, lemon trees, lemon grass and anything else that smells like lemons.

If the plants can not quite produce enough lemon smell some evenings, you can supplement them with lemon-scented candles or citronella oil rubbed straight onto your skin. It is a perfectly natural oil, so should not injure you, your children or your pets. Dogs suffer from mosquitoes as much as we do.

As mentioned above, mosquitoes are not strong fliers, so a decent fan, usually kills hundreds of them a night by blowing them against walls and the fan’s blades. A favourite of mine on a bad night, is a mosquito trap.

One that has highly-charged electrical wires behind an attractive ultra-violet light, the sound of them crackling away on the electrified wire is very enjoyable and extremely effective

One mosquito trap can clear a whole garden, but my all-time favourite is the tennis racquet type bug-zapper, the one that looks like a child’s tennis racquet. Anything that gets through your defences, is a certain gonner, if you have a racquet bug zapper

If you are searching for a warm, friendly country with a bit of a difference, you could do worse that add Mexico to your short list. If you are asking yourself what there is to do in Mexico, well, there is plenty of history, delicious food, culture and beautiful, beautiful, deep-blue waters. If you are searching for a bit of adventure in your holiday, scuba diving in Mexico could be it.

If you are not already a scuba diver, that is not a problem, because you can learn from square one at lots of the diving schools and diving clubs in Mexico.

However, if you want to get the most out of a diving vacation abroad, you could try to learn the fundamentals before you climb on the jet.

You see, you can learn everything in Mexico, but not a lot of clubs would take you out into the sea, until it was safe for you to do go; until you were proficient. This may take longer than your two weeks holiday. So if you could get the fundamentals out of the way before you went, you would enjoy sea diving more.

There are loads of diving features in Mexican waters that can be experienced by scuba divers, even novices, but one of the immense thrills that a great deal of novices crave is swimming with dolphins and turtles and this you can do in Mexican coastal waters.

However, besides these larger sea creatures, there are thousands of species of fish: some small and some very large. There are also reefs, plants and wrecks.

One of the easiest methods of finding a reliable diving club, is to book the diving at the time you book your holiday or through the hotel when you get there.

You could also book via the Internet before you left and check on a club’s reputation by entering into a search engine: “worries with ….” or “disputes with …”, where ‘…’ is the name of the club.

If you are already vacationing in Mexico and you would like to have a go, why not ask about a local club with a good reputation for being safe divers at the local yacht club or marina?

People who spend a lot of time on the water and who own boats locally are certain to know someone who will take you on. They might even take you out personally.

No matter where you go on the shoreline in Mexico, you will find scuba diving clubs and teachers, so do not let that put you off. If you do not have your own diving gear, do not worry – very few beginners have a full kit.

Most individuals rent in the start until they are sure that they are hooked on the sport, because a full set of diving gear is not cheap, although you could buy your first wet suit second hand.

Look in diving clubs and on eBay for second hand diving equipment, you will definitely save a bundle of money until you are certain that scuba diving is for you.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a lot of topics, but is currently occupied with Body Glove cellsuits. If you would like to know more about Body Glove Wetsuit Sale, please go over to our website for some impressive bargains.

For most individuals, buying a hot tub, also called a gazebo, a hot spa or a Jacuzzi, is a first time event. This makes it quite a daunting undertaking, because they are not cheap and there are numerous variables.

You have to do research on the different types of jets, the power of the pump that is best for you, the location, whether to install a deck around it or not et cetera, et cetera. In this piece, we will take a look at a few of these points to make buying a hot tub easier for you.

The first point to think about is size. This normally depends on two things: where you are going to put the hot tub and how many people are going to be using it at a time. If you are hoping to situate it above the ground floor inside your home, you will have to check the weight of the spa whilst it is full of water and people to see whether your floor will take that weight without reinforcement. If the climate is decent where you live, the garden is the best place to put it.

The next deliberation is cost. There is a vast choice of hot tubs and a wide span of prices as well. If you find that the cost of a new hot tub is simply out of your range, what about purchasing a second hand one?

There is rather a large second hand market in Jacuzzis because hotels, health spas and some home owners have to renew their models. You may be lucky enough to find rather a plush second hand model for less than the price of a new cheap one. Ask at a local installer’s for details.

The next consideration is the material that the actual tub is manufactured from. This is not inevitably the same as the housing or cabinet that surrounds the tub. Traditional-style hot tubs are made from local hardwoods such as cedar, oak, redwood or teak, but they are weighty and leak a bit.

Contemporary materials used are a mixture of plastic and fibreglass moulded into comfortable seating arrangements. They are lighter and do not leak (or should not).

Then you can think about the housing. Is the hot tub going to be on its own somewhere or is it going to be built in? if you are going to build it in, what are you going to build it into? A deck? Hardwood, softwood, concrete and tiles?

Then there is the routine maintenance of the tub. This is not difficult but it is essential, so if you are building your tub into something, remember that you will have to have access to certain parts of it. Read the instruction manual of the tub that you buy to learn which parts will require maintenance and cleaning.

Normally, this involves cleaning the jets, adding chemicals to the water, changing filters and maybe renewing a gasket on the pump, which could be assigned to an engineer in an annual service contract.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on a variety of topics, but is now involved with second hand hot tubs.

Individuals often ask themselves why people like sports cars. Some say that it is the macho image, some say that it is a striving to revisit the owner’s youth, some see them as sex symbols and pulling magnets and maybe all those are valid, but one thing is for certain, sports cars stand out in an age when you have to be an expert on cars to be able to tell the difference between the various models without looking at the badge.

Modern family cars all look the same; all SUV’s look the same, all pick ups look the same, because they are all designed by computer and computers can only come to one ‘best’ conclusion. Enquire of a computer which is the most aerodynamic shape and it is not going to give you fifty choices, is it? So, all family cars look the same.

But sports cars are all different. Manufacturers of sports cars like their models to stand out for their beauty and style among other items. That is not to say that sports car manufacturers do not use computers, but they can permit themselves more freedom in the design aspect because the engine is going to be stronger and the materials are going to be dearer (which means lighter) and fuel economy is not the name of the game – beauty and style are.

If you have reservations about what I am saying, look at real racing cars like those in Formula One – they all look the same as well, because a computer was asked: what is the most aerodynamic and fuel economic shape? Beauty and style are beside the point in Formula One.

Another reason why people like sports cars is because they are faster than standard cars, although most countries have restrictions on how fast you can drive on their roads. However, the fast acceleration that a performance car like a sports car has, is still helpful for overtaking and getting out of trouble. If used properly, acceleration is a helpful safety feature.

Some individuals also like to show off their wealth by buying an ostentatious car, because everyone knows that a Maseratti, a Lamborghini or a Ferrari is very expensive. The appearance of these cars is important to their owners, because not only are they flamboyant, but they are also beautiful, sleek and stylish and the owner hopes that some of that identity will rub off on him or her.

Different sports cars also have different driving characteristics. While this is the case of all makes of cars, it does not matter so much if steering is a touch light on a family car travelling at 40 mph, but it does on a sports car travelling at 80 mph.

The car has to be just right for the driver’s ability and preferences. The car will not be manufactured to suit the driver, so drivers of sports cars normally have their favourites the choice of which is affected by its handling characteristics.

A last reason why drivers like sports cars is because they often hold their value well and can even rise in value if it is a especially good or desirable model.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a number of topics, but is now involved with how to get cheap 4×4 tyres.

Unless you are a fan of racing cars, there is a decent chance that you have not heard of Formula D Racing. Formula D has its adherents of course, but it is still not as widely known as the other types of racing like Formula One, Drag Car Racing, NASCAR or Cross Country Rallying. This is partly because it is a fairly new kind of car racing.

Every year the national television coverage is a bit more extensive, yet it is taking a long time to prise some of the airtime away from the more traditional sports. Once you have seen a competition though, the likelihood is that you will become hooked on this exciting sport that they have Christened Formula D.

The ‘D’ in Formula D stands for ‘drifting’ which is another name given to the sport. Drifting refers to the angle of the car with reference to the sides of the road at any given moment. Drifting around bends permits the car to maintain its highest possible speed in a bend. Drifting sounds natural and therefore commonplace, but it is actually very difficult to do well.

Drifting takes skill and plenty of practice. Drivers are judged partially on their talent at drifting. There are in fact two aspects of Formula D or two types of drifting. There are the traditional style qualifying runs and there are also tandem battles. Qualifying runs involve the driver racing solo flat out against the clock, drifting as necessary to maintain the highest speed they can.

However, tandem runs involve two car drivers who are being scored on their skills at outwitting the other driver. The judges are looking for the line of drift, the speed of the cars, overtaking, crashes and much more. Driving in the tandem runs definitely sorts the men out from the boys.

Formula Drifting grew up a little chaotically, but there have been serious attempts to control it. At the moment the Formula Drift Championship is the only professional drifting championship that is sanctioned by SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) Pro Racing in the United States, although there are frequently amateur local drifting competitions held unofficially.

There needs to be more officially authorized races so that standards are maintained and each driver follows the same set of rules. This is the only way that the TV stations will pick up on drifting and help promote it more. Drifting is new to the United States, yet the first Drifting Races took place in 2004, so not all that long ago anyway. It is still very much a modern sport.

At the moment the country where Formula D is most well-liked is Japan, but that is likely to change once the American media gets to grips with Drifting. At the moment it is still not that simple to watch drifting events unless you live in California, Washington, Georgia or New Jersey and it is still not easy to watch it on TV unless you can watch G4TechTV, which is commonly known as G4.

Do you like the sound of running water? Do you find the sound relaxing? Well, you can easily produce the sound of moving water in your own garden. You can put in a fish pond or a water garden. So, if you think that your garden needs landscaping, it might be a good idea to think about a fish pond or water garden.

People think that a fish pond takes lot of looking after, but that is not inevitably true. The truth is that the larger the fish pond, the less effort you have to put into it. This is because a big pond can create its own ecosystem, whereas a small fish pond needs help.

The ways that you can help a small fish pond be a decent environment for your fish are as follows:

Pond Filters – use a pond filter with a good pump. Do not forget that you could use a solar powered pump. It will save on the environment and on your wallet. You should use a pond filter on a small pond, because the ecosystem cannot cope with all the plant waste of a small ornamental pond on its own. A pond pump will feed the filtration system and a waterfall or fountain if you wish.

Your pond filtration system should be left running all day, but you can not just set it and forget it. Make sure that the pump is running daily and keep the filter as clean as necessary for it to do its job. You may find that you have to clean it two or three times a week in the summer and autumn but only once a week in the winter and spring.

Leaf Netting: stop leaves from clogging up your pond in the autumn. The net should be suspended a foot or so above the pond to stop autumn leaves falling into the water and rotting.

Feeding: all fish should be given fish food, not bread or scraps. Some fish need specific fish food in order to maintain their colour. When you buy your fish, the salesperson should inform you what they eat. In general, the larger the pond the less hassle feeding becomes as they will eat natural food like insects, grubs, larvae and flies.

Fish need less food in the winter when they become semi-dormant and live off the fat stores that they built up in the warmer months, so give food often in the summer and autumn, but less often in the winter. You must check to see if surplus food is left floating on the surface.

Winter: make sure that there is a hole in the ice so that the water can take in oxygen and the fish can feed if they wish to. You can buy a floating de-icer or some people float a round football in a hoola-hoop, which seems to work unless the temperature gets very low.

In fact, the hoola-hoop is a good idea all year round really. If you place the food in the hoop, it remains in one place and you can see if you have given too much. It also makes a nice site to see all the fish feeding in a shoal.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on many topics, but is currently concerned with water garden pumps. If you are interested in a Solar Powered Pond Pump, please go to our web site right away for some extra special deals.

The summer is the season for barbecues, backyard parties, lounging in the backyard or bathing in the pool. It is also the time for insects, normally of the flying variety. Flies and mosquitoes can become everything from mildly annoying to downright perilous. So what can you do to protect yourself in the garden during the summer?

The first thing to do is start clearing up your garden before the summer starts. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water and it just has to be a half-inch deep. This means that you ought to keep the gutters free from fallen leaves and other blockages.

Blocked gutters and drains are major breeding grounds, but so are all things that can hold rainwater. Flower pots, buckets, old tyres and folds in tarpaulins are others.

Drill holes in pots, bins and old tyres; pull tarpaulins tight, upturn boats and canoes and if you have water features, make sure that there are either guppies or goldfish in there too, because they are well-known for feeding on mosquito larvae.

Carrying out a preventive strike on mosquito breeding grounds will radically reduce the number of mosquitoes in your garden and thus reduce your liklihood of being given West Nile virus (in the USA). It will also safeguard you against E.coli.

However, your neighbours may not be as particular as yourself, so mosquitoes will still come into your backyard. To protect yourself from these spray insect repellent containing DEET (25% +) on your clothes and exposed skin to avoid mosquito bites.

In the twilight, hang a bug zapper with a blue light and an electrified coil in the locality of where you are sitting. The best ones also use pheromones to attract mosquitoes, especially octenol.

Some species of mosquitoes hang around animals, so rub some natural mosquito repellent on your dogs or do not allow them to lie at your feet.

Do not use DEET on them because they will lick it off and get sick. Use citronella oil, lemon oil or garlic. There are lots of others as well, but they are not as effective or as long-lasting as DEET.

If you are cooking, and who would not be, be cautious of meat, particularly chicken and pork. If the meat is frozen, thaw it gradually and keep it in the fridge until minutes before you are going to cook it.

The risk zone is between 40-140F, when bacteria will grow very quickly and flies will lay eggs in it. If you have to store the meat out of the fridge, store it ‘under water’, that is, in a marinade, so that flies can not get at it and it is out of direct sunlight.

Keep food and drinks apart, so that the fridge is not opened so frequently as to permit the temperature to increase above 40F. Use two sets of kitchen utensils, one to handle uncooked meat and fish and one to take cooked meat and fish off the flames otherwise you will contaminate the cooked food.

Use a meat thermometer to check that the foodstuff is cooked: 160F for meat and 165F for chicken. Discard cooked food not eaten after two hours or after one hour if the background temperature is above 90F. If you would like to use marinade up on cooked food, boil it first.

Winnipeg has long been Canada’s mosquito capital, but Edmonton is challenging it this year. These days, mosquito traps in Edmonton are catching five times more mosquitoes that those in Winnipeg. Rainy spells followed by warm weather are responsible for the colossal rise in the number of these maddening insects.

Inhabitants of Edmonton are asking for a substantial rise in the budget to combat the mosquito populace which can carry West Nile Virus. West Nile Virus delivers indications comparable to a severe bout of flu, although older and younger victims have passed away from epidemics. County health officials are considering spraying public fields before official public festivals to reduce the rate of biting.

On the other side of the world, in Sidney, Australia, the parks department has also begun its anti-mosquito spraying plan and residents are invited to call in to become added to a ‘no spray’ list, if they are afraid of the toxicity of the insect spray. It is considered that most people will prefer having their block and backyard sprayed as the numbers of mosquitoes are rising there too.

However, the spraying program has always proved a success in the past and will like continue to be so. This year it will be supplemented by poisoning ponds and lakes with larvacide, which is a more helpful form of control adding fish to the ponds that consume mosquito larvae would be an even better manner. The tablets are known as Altosid and last for 30 days, although they are also considering using XR which works for 150 days.

West Nile Virus is also a problem in Sidney, although there have not been any recorded cases yet. This means nothing though as most people who get WNF think that they have a summer cold. The city health authorities say that they are continuing to trap mosquitoes and carry out autopsies on dead birds to get an early notification of a possible WNV epidemic.

The city health department is warning all those more than 50 years of age and those with a weakened immune system to take extra care by using a repellent including DEET, picaridin or lemon eucalyptus oil on exposed skin and by wearing long trousers and long-sleeved shirts at dusk and at dawn.

They are also suggesting doing basic maintenance and repairs about the home and backyard. In particular, fly screens should be repaired and all stagnant water should be drained. They recommend drilling holes in any old tyres and bins that can hold water, because mosquitoes just need a half inch of water to breed.

In the meantime, in the States, anti-mosquito activity is also being pursued. It appears that wherever you go in the world, the local authorities are trying to do something about the number of mosquitoes. Do they know something that we don’t?

Like in Sidney and Edmonton, they as well are worried about the Developed world Nile Infection which seems to have people running afraid all over the world.

In Jacksonville, they are also recommending that people remove the mosquito’s breeding grounds from gardens and rubbish ground by up-turning any container that could hold water after rainfall. They also recommend unblocking drains and gutters.

They warn about keeping your animals safe from Eastern Equine Encephalitis during dawn and dusk and keeping yourself safe by wearing long clothing at dawn and dusk. Finally, they say to put DEET on all bare areas of skin.

Stock car racing was really born out of the inclination of owners of modified stock (meaning: ‘off the sales lot’) cars to show off their vehicles, craftsmanship and driving expertise. The need to ‘soup up’ these stock cars came from the wish to escape the law enforcement agencies chasing them when they were running moonshine or said another way, bootlegging.

For the period of Prohibition, a lot of moonshine whiskey was being produced in isolated areas of the Appalachians and in particular the Allegheny Mountains, from where it was taken by private carriers in their own stock cars often to the southern states. Many of these drivers tuned up their cars in order to have more chance of escape.

When Prohibition was repealed in 1933, this bootlegging continued in order to avoid paying duty, but it gradually died out. However, the fire had already been lit and the drivers of these cars liked to race them in their free time for pride and reward, especially in the southern states and especially in North Carolina, where most of the stock car teams are still situated.

NASCAR was founded by Bill French in 1947 when he crafted the first set of uniform rules and a championship scoring system so that an overall winner of all the season’s races could be worked out.

However, the conditions in the early days were pretty crude. The cars were often second-hand and worn and the track was just earth and dust. Under these conditions the cars quickly fell apart, so NASCAR allowed competing cars to be customized or strengthened. Safety aspects for the drivers were also introduced. Nowadays, the NASCAR instruction manual clearly defines all the modifications that are allowed on contending cars.

These days it is a mistake to call NASCAR cars ‘stock cars’; they are anything but stock cars. NASCAR cars are hand made. The frames are different from stock cars in that they are manufactured from tubes for strength; the tin is sheet steel and the engine blocks begin as simply that – a bare block. What the mechanics do with it after that is a closely guarded secret.

The safety of the driver is also taken very earnestly. The driver is shielded from injury by a heavy roll cage. Strong round and square tubes make up the car’s framework, while thinner tubing is employed at the front and back ends to soak up the impact of crashes by crushing slowly. These are called clips and the front clip will also allow the engine to fall away under the car, rather than be forced straight back into the driver.

The bodies of NASCAR cars are not straightforward to make, often taking ten days to finish. However, NASCAR rules cover the general body shape and they provide thirty templates to make making a NASCAR car a bit easier.

But it does not end there. There are different regulations and templates for different types of races on different tracks, because the cars that race on superspeedways are not the same as those used for short tracks or endurance races.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece writes on quite a few subjects, but is currently concerned with thinking about the Poconos Raceway in Pennsylvania. If you would like to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at Poconos Vacations.

50cc scooters have an engine size that classifies them as small motorcycles or mopeds at the limit between the vehicle category and moped classes. Regulations vary betweenmany countries of the world, when it comes to the right to drive 50cc scooters with or without a driving license and common laws are seldom made. For example, in some EU countries you can ride such motorcycles without a driving license. The exceptions are France and Italy, where you must have a car driving license to drive vehicles up to 125cc. There is quite a high level of legal ambiguity for the definition and classification of scooters.

The restrictions and licensing fees are a lot smaller for 50cc scooters and they are not legally defined as motorcycles. This definition applies to vehicles above the 50 cc engine capacity. However, an intermediary definition or class has been created by some states. Therefore, between 50 and 150cc, vehicles are referred to as motorized bikes. In other parts of the world, 50cc scooters and above, are defined as motorcycles.

Therefore, the terms of such a vehicle’s classification vary from state to state and cannot be discussed as if they are interchangeable. Consequently, when you go to buy for a scooter or you are searching for information, you need to take these details into consideration as well in order to understand everything correctly.

As for technical features, 50cc scooters are among the smallest and best designed on the market. People love them because of their low cost, the reduced fuel consumption and the possibility of being used by teenagers and adults alike. They are chic and sporty at the same time, so such a vehicle is considered a trendy alternative to public transport.

You can zip around with a scooter or moped, avoiding the challenges of heavy traffic. Although they have a rather small cylinder capacity, 50cc scooters have four stroke engines with a high performance to outperform in various mobility and transportation uses.

However, 50cc scooters share common features with the larger models, because the design lines are usually kept almost the same by manufacturers. Therefore, there is an electric start and a kick start mode, the brakes and exhaust come in competition variants and they all have some form of storage space under the seat.

Before buying a small motorcycle, you should learn something about the certification for registration, the guarantee, the fuel consumption and the technical limitations of the model. Nevertheless, the same tips hold true for larger designs too.

It is nice to soak in a hot tub, is it not? After a long day at the hamster wheel or sorting the family out – driving the kids to and from school and then to the scouts, sports club or music lessons. Being stuck in traffic on the way home or waiting in the queue at the supermarket, a long soak in a hot tub helps wash it all away.

Imagine then what a hot tub spa or Jacuzzi could do? Sitting in a hot spa tub with a long cool drink whilst half a dozen jets are blasting hot water and bubbles at you, massaging you gently, easing the stresses of the day away.

You could place one in the garden or in the bathroom. You could even buy a portable hot spa tub and move it into the garden in the summer and back inside in the winter. If you ask most individuals what they want to have in the way of home improvement, a swimming pool would probably be number one and a Jacuzzi number two.

There again, a lot of people do not have the room for a swimming pool and a Jacuzzi is a lot cheaper than a swimming pool as well. Water has a calming effect on individuals. Maybe it is a primeval memory of when we came out of the sea millions of years ago or maybe it is a more recent memory of being in the womb.

Whatever the reason or even mixture of reasons, individuals like to be in, around or on water, it relaxes and invigorates us. And frothing, bubbling water is even more relaxing and even more invigorating. Hence the popularity of hot tub spas.

Another reason might be gravity. All day long we are lumbering about, each foot step sending shock waves into our body and gravity pulling down on so that we feel every ounce of our weight, but as soon as we are in water, we are buoyed up and the effects of our weight and of gravity are felt far less.

In fact, up to 30% less. Additionally, we are ninety-odd percent water, so no surprise we feel tranquil in a hot tub. But that is not all that a soak in a hot tub does. It warms you right through, through to the marrow and that relieves minor aches and pains. The reduction in gravity is also said to be a relief to sufferers of arthritis.

There are possibly other reasons as well why individuals feel more relaxed in a tub of hot water, especially a whirlpool type spa tub, but one for me is that I will not get out of the tub for anything except to get another drink. Once I am in there, I do not care if the phone rings or the door bell chimes. The house would have to be on fire to get be me out before my skin looks like a wrinkled old prune.

Water can be dangerous particularly for families with small children, so each family with a hot tub ought to have some type of safety policy. This article will give some fundamental hot tub safety tips that can be adopted by families for the protection of its children and other members.

The first safety tip for hot tubs is never to leave children alone with a hot tub full of water. It is not a matter of whether the child can swim or not. Children play, fight and mess about. They could fall over, bang their head, be knocked unconscious and drown. There are a number of scenarios where this could happen and it is simply better to not give bad luck a chance. Do not allow children in a tub on their own or even anywhere close by it if it is full.

It is fairly usual to have an alcoholic drink whilst in the hot tub in the evening, but be wary not to become drunk. It is very dangerous to be out of control or even fall unconscious while you are in or in water and this goes doubly for a hot tub because they are so relaxing. The warm water, the soothing motion of the water and excess alcohol or other drugs could lead to you falling asleep and drowning.

However, it is not only while you are in the tub that being drunk is risky, being a bit wobbly is arguably even more perilous when you are getting in or out of the tub because you could fall, bump your head and drown while unconscious. Never let anyone use your hot tub if they are intoxicated or stoned unless there are sober or straight people there as well. This rule ought to be applied to those on medication as well.

Another danger, be it ever so slight is that of long hair being sucked into the filtration and cleaning system. If a young child with long hair had its hair sucked into the drain, it could have difficulty getting back above the water line, particularly if it panicked. Another reason never to leave children unsupervised in a pool or spa.

It is a good idea to know how to turn the spa’s motor or pump off quickly, so that if there is problem with hair entanglement, you can release the child by turning the pump off quickly which should release the child.

The electricity supply to the tub will be pretty well protected, especially if it was installed by a professional, but is worth checking every now and again that the cables are all still shielded from water, because as we all know, water and electricity do not mix well.

Also keep this in mind if you take any mains powered apparatus like a radio, TV or computer to the spa with you too. Locate all electrical devices well away from the spa and far enough away that they will not get splashed. They can be controlled by a remote device without any danger.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on a number of subjects, but is now concerned with Hot Springs hot tubs.

Only children like the idea of getting older, most adults want to halt the aging process or even set it going backwards, if they could. However, as we all know, that is impossible, which is why they invented the next best thing, day spas, beauty salons and all the creams, lotions and treatments that they provide to endeavour to stem the results of aging.

And to be fair, some of them can do a pretty good job. In this piece, we will look at the services offered by day spas. A day spa is comparable to a beauty salon but with water events offered too. A day spa is an extended beauty salon and may be located in a larger place, especially if there is a swimming pool on site.

The main difference between a beauty salon and a day spa is that in a beauty salon, you are given all your treatments and then you leave, whereas in a day spa, you can hang about a bit in between treatments or remain in the pool or sauna longer than the allotted 15-20 minutes, if you want to.

A day spa is more relaxed and people tend to spend more time in them. There may even be a bar or a juice bar or / and a place to get light, health snacks like a salad or a vegetarian sandwich.

One of the most popular treatments at a spa is the massage. There are different types of massage, so it may take you a time to find your favourite if you have not had a massage before. Some of the types of massage frequently on offer are: Thai massage, Japanese massage, full body massage, oil massage and a foot massage. Additionally, some spas will use hot towels on your face to clean out pores and hot stones on your spine for deep heat.

You might also fancy a body wrap or a mud pack or even a mud bath! These treatments can really make your skin look younger by deep cleaning the pores of pollutants, make up and everyday grime. They make you feel ten years younger for a while, but they tighten up the skin and make you look younger for a time as well.

Perhaps you would prefer to concentrate on your hands and / or feet? Then you could have a full manicure and / or pedicure. These treatments could include a local massage, skin and nail treatments followed by an oil treatment. You could also be given a foot spa, which is like a mini-jacuzzi. A foot spa is fantastic if you have been on you feet all day. They might also use heated socks or mittens.

Half an hour in a hot tub, a jacuzzi or even a steam box are other services that may be there at day spas which you are unlikely to find in a beauty salon. When you arrive at the day spa, check out any cheap day packages. You can often save a bit of money on the individual treatments supplied.

Have you ever thought about getting away from it all and going on a huge detox mission? There is a great deal to be said for giving your body a break from all the pollution, smoke, noise, fast-paced lifestyle and stress and the substances that we use to handle that stress like alcohol, tobacco, coffee and worse. It is not so bad while your body is young, yet as it gets older, it becomes less capable of dealing with all the stuff we give it to deal with.

Costa Rica may sound like a long way to go to visit a spa or health resort, but it is just a flight away. The reason for selecting Costa Rica is because it is like a home from home for Americans, and the ambiance is a lot slower and more easy-going. There are lots of health spas and retreats to choose from in Costa Rica and a brief search on the Internet will reveal many of them.

Spanish is the foremost local language, but English is spoken by over ten percent of the adult population and tourist facilities are well developed in the form of exchanging currencies, restaurants and hotels. The country is unpolluted and environmentally friendly.

For instance, according to Wikipedia, Costa Rica is ranked third in the world and first among the Americas in terms of the 2010 Environmental Performance Index and in 2007, the government declared that it intended for Costa Rica to become the first carbon neutral country by 2021. Moreover, the Happy Planet Index ranks Costa Rica as number one in the world and also as the “greenest country in the world”.

Where better could you go to escape pollution and stress than a health spa or retreat in such a country? Many of the resorts offer stress reducing schemes that include methods of relaxation such as yoga, meditation, reiki, massage and tai-chi, although there are lots of places offering water sports such as diving, sailing and surfing. There is fantastic diving to be had in warm, clear water, which is teaming with flora and fauna.

Prices are low when compared with the United States. You can get a hotel or a room in a retreat for $25-$50 and up and a good meal will cost $2-$4. There are all sorts of food but particularly the types of food associated with Spanish and American cuisine. Vegetarians are well catered for as well and there is fish and other seafood in profusion for those who rather it to meat.

Some of the health spa resorts have rooms for you to stay in while others offer just day time courses. The retreat style resorts are live-in and many are similar to communes. The facilities vary from being ‘hippyish’ and pretty basic in some of the retreats to being as modern as anywhere in the world in the health spas, offering swimming pools, gymnasiums and hot tub spas.

All in all, if you are thinking of going abroad for a healthy, restful break, a holiday in Costa Rica should be on your short list.

If you have a backyard or back garden, you can have a fish pond. They are not costly to build and if you make it yourself it is clearly even cheaper. You can build your own pond pretty easily, you just have to keep a few things in mind when you plan where you are going to put it and how big it will be.

A backyard fish pond is great for all kinds of households. Tending a backyard fish pond is not difficult and the gentle exercise will be good for you. it is also therapeutic to watch the fish and other pond life going about their daily business and children will learn a bit more about nature,

It is important to plan your pond before you pick up your spade and the first thing to think about is where you are going to place it. Try not to put it under a tree or you will be dredging leaves out of your pond every day in autumn. Do not put the pond at the lowest point in your garden or it may overflow when it rains and your fish may swim away which means that you will need to sandbag it before it rains every time..

The noon sun can be very hot, so it would help if the pond had at least partial shade between 11 AM and 2 PM. If your area is subject to freezing then the pond should be 30-45 inches deep for at least 4 m2 or 36 ft2, although if the winter can get really severe, it is best to seek advice from a neighbourhood pet shop. Have a look at the pre-formed fish ponds in a garden or pond centre to see if you like those formats and sizes. If you do not, then you can buy a butyl pond liner (a sheet of rubber) and design your own pond.

After you have dug out your backyard fish pond and put your pre-formed or butyl liner into the hole, you should finish off the pond’s edge with either brick, block or stone. Use similar materials to make a few caves in the pond itself for the fish to take cover in. You can also anchor the fountain and any under-water lighting. Fill the pond with water, but do not place any living thing into it yet. Put the rest of your equipment in.

You will need a general purpose pump to send water to the pond filter, which should be two or three feet above the water level. The water will then have to pass through a filter to remove plant debris and faeces and under a UV light to kill bacteria. It can return to the pond via a waterfall, which will help aerate the water as will the fountain.

After a week, the water will have lost the chemicals like chlorine which the water company puts into it and you can buy plants and fish, but do not rush into it. You may want to build a few shelves to put flower pots on for the aquatic plants that need them.

So, you’ve got some time off work, college or school and you want to get in the open air and enjoy it. Maybe even go on vacation. What a good idea! But what happens when you get where you are going? The mosquitoes come out to get you.

If it were not so routine, it would sound like Freddy Kruger and Nightmare on Elm Street. The female mosquitoes need blood to create eggs and they seek it out as insatiably as any vampire in a horror movie, while the males go sipping nectar from plants like fairies.

Well, that is the nightmare setting, but it is not that far from the truth either. For many peoples in the world it is also a actual life and death problem. Millions of people die every year from malaria and loads more from dengue too. Yet both of these diseases are curable as are most of the other mosquito-borne diseases like Yellow Fever, Japanese Jungle Encephalopathy and Nile fever.

The first thing to understand is that usually these diseases can be inoculated against, especially if you are going on vacation. The next thing to bear in mind – it might help – is that not all mosquitoes are the same. For instance, in Thailand, the dengue-bearing mosquito (often called the ‘Egyptian’) comes out during the day time and so bites then too. Between about an hour before dawn and an hour after dusk, whereas the malaria-carrying mosquito, the Anopheles, is a night time huntress.

I am not suggesting that you can relax your guard during the day, although many people take for granted that they can. Nobody wants dengue fever either.

So, what can you do? Before you go anywhere, read up on the district or check with medical experts. That bit is not hard, particularly, if you know how to search the Internet. Then prepare yourself with inoculations if the danger is serious enough in your opinion or a medical expert’s estimation. In my opinion, that is the minimum that a responsible person ought to be expected to do to safeguard him or herself, the family and the community at large.

Then there are a few other things you can do. For example, wear voluminous clothes, but long sleeves and long trousers. If you are thin on top by choice or not, wear a hat or cap. Dress in socks or stockings in the evening to safeguard your toes. Get a good-quality mosquito repellent and put it on your exposed skin, as often as necessary by the manufacturer, which is usually every four or five hours.

You could rationally stop there, but I like to go a bit further, if the situation calls for it. If I am outside in the garden at home or in a hotel, I like to have one of those tennis racquet style electric bug zappers with me. They are great for zapping the odd mosquito that buzzes you. They are good for clearing the bedroom before retiring too and lastly, if I’m renting, hiking, camping or caravaning, I may find space for a rechargeable lantern-style bug zapper too.

If the little so-and-sos are going to give me a fever, they are going to have to try really hard to do it.

Were you aware that Eastern Equine Encephalitis can be transmitted to humans? It is rare, but mosquitoes can give humans EEE and at least one inhabitant of Middleborough can corroborate it. What is more EEE is worse for humans than West Nile Virus, which is spread by the same species of mosquito in the North East of the United States.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis attacks the brain and the nervous system and frequently either kills of leaves its victim in significant trouble.

The one man who is known to have been infected with EEE in NE America in August 2010, is still in a wheel chair a year afterward and there is no foreseeable end to his pain.

The health authorities in close by Plymouth and Bristol counties where there were also plenty of these mosquitoes (Culex pipiens) last year have warned that this could be a bad year for them as well.

They warned householders to start on home defence by repairing broken and damaged fly screens now. They have also recommended cleaning up mosquitoes’ breeding grounds.

This involves up-turning any containers that could hold water for them to breed in. Do not forget that a mosquito only needs a half inch of water to lay 400 eggs. Drill holes in flower pots and long forgotten tyres so that they cannot retain water any more.

Old tyres are cited as one of the foremost reasons for the increase of mosquitoes and the spreading of new species.

The next couple of weeks are the linchpin of how many mosquitoes will be around later in the summer and autumn. The more you exterminate now, the fewer there will be to breed further generations and mosquitoes can breed a new generation roughly every month.

That is 1x400x400x400 mosquitoes each quarter for each mosquito that escapes. A great-grandmother mosquito can become responsible for 64 million offspring every quarter!

These mosquitoes (C. pipiens) breed in water, but hang about in damp, dark undergrowth, so you could spray in there as well. Some local authorities have been out spraying the parks and verges, but you can do your bit by taking control of your own micro-environment – your garden, shed and garage.

EEE has not been seen this year in the North East so far, but West Nile Virus has been encountered twice already. The weather has been perfect for mosquitoes – rain followed by warm weather.

The symptoms of West Nile and Easter Equine are comparable to those of flu. The difference is that around 1% of those with WNF might die, but a lot more with EEE will almost certainly die. Around a third will suffer permanent brain injury

People are worried by last year’s incident. For example, the authorities in Plymouth County have already received almost 10,000 requests to spray against mosquitoes. This situation can only get worse unless residents help by checking their gardens and nearby garbage ground for likely breeding sites and destroying them. But it is not easy, mosquitoes can breed in a waste potato chip packet, so refuse becomes a big topic too.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece writes on more than a few subjects, but is currently concerned with how to stop mosquito bite itch.

A storm can be distressing for your outdoor fish, especially for large koi carp, which, being large, probably do not have many areas to hide. However, if you have designed your koi fish pond well, you will have taken this into consideration when your constructed the pond. Similarly, the pond should be deep enough for your fish to be able to get well below the choppy surface layer.

If you prepared for the storm, you possibly put a net over the fish pond, so the first thing you need to do after the storm is clear up any fallen debris and take away the net, so that you can get a good look at your fish and what occurred to them. They may be a bit stressed, so move unhurriedly and try hard not to frighten them. Stress is a killer in the animal world as well as in ours.

Did you take the additional safeguard of sand-bagging the edges of your pond to stop it over-flowing and the fish swimming away? If so, remove the sand bags, so that you can get a better look.

Now you can get a good look at the upheaval, if there is any. Use a net to quietly skim off any leaves that have blown under the netting and onto the pond. If any plants have been uprooted, put them back where they should be. In general, put the pond back as it used to be, so that the fish feel at home. Again, move unhurriedly and try not to put your fish under any more stress.

If you have to carry out major structural repairs, you could place your koi in a child’s plastic paddling pool until you can sort the issue out. Put the pool in a shaded area and fold the netting over it several times so that the fish can not get out and cats and birds cannot get in. If you can aerate the pool with a pump so much the better.

Put a few plants in there with them for cover and feed sparingly. if the repairs will take a long time, you could ask your local pet shop to take them away for a week or whatever. You will have to pay board and lodgings, but it is preferable to losing your prized koi carp.

Once any repairs have been carried out, you ought to check the water quality, which could have been changed by debris falling into the pond or by your repairs. Rain, especially acid rain, can have quite an effect, especially if it rained for a long time.

First check the water for nitrates. If the levels are unacceptable (see the testing kit for details), you ought to normalize them. If the levels are extremely high, first remove the plants from the water.

Then test the KH levels. If they are low, say, below 100, then you could add a cup of baking soda per 1,000 gallons of water and check again. Whatever you do, the quickest way to de-stress your fish is to restore their environment to what it used to be with clean water to swim in.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many topics, but is now involved with water garden pumps.
It is the summer vacation time and there could be no better time for kids to party and get pleasure from bouncy castles and towers. Parties are absolutely the best times for kids to relax after a stressful year and look forward to a new one with enthusiasm.

It is the summer vacation time and there could be no better time for kids to party and get pleasure from bouncy castles and towers. Parties are absolutely the best times for kids to relax after a stressful year and look forward to a new one with enthusiasm.

It would be fun and exciting to relish the coming school year after enjoying a party with bouncy castles and towers. Bouncy castles and towers are just inflated balloons with a platform that provide jumping fun and help enliven a party atmosphere.

My attitude comes from my own observation when I see children enjoying themselves at summer and birthday parties, with the platform and colourful castles providing young children with a feeling of being in fairy land jumping around on the platforms.

So, I have always felt that whether you are into event management, you love organizing parties for your children or are only planning a fun theme party for your kids’ birthday, bouncy castles are the best addition. So, you should choose to either purchase one or rent one for the party/parties.

I have also always thought that bouncy castles are ideal at family parties, where the adults want to have some quality time socializing with friends and family. These inflatables are sure to give them that time as the children have excitement and fun.

Procuring this entertainment equipment for parties and other social occasion is not tough, as renting out this equipment has turned into a thriving business with numerous businesses competing with each other. As far as my observation goes this prospering trade has led to the development of an inventive, innovative and cost effective range of bouncy castles.

The recent innovation in bouncy castles, Beach Party, which is available in sizes of 12 meters and 10 meters, I have observed, is the best for fun when hosting a beach party. Its five massive hump jumping castles with spectacular graphics and artwork, in different sizes, classes and capacity, help hosting an outrageous beach party.

They can give your younger and older kids the maximum fun in bouncing and jumping with exhilarating features like biff & bash obstacles, “crawl through” donuts together with a giant beach ball, deep bouncy bed, huge towers and high walls.

I think you have every right to be excited about getting bouncy castles and towers for kids’ parties. You can easily find retail outlets or businesses that sell or hire them for extraordinary occasions. With the Net and yellow pages offering all the data under the sun, it is not a problem to find a decent deal.

Finding online stores specializing in bouncy castles has become very simple because of their popularity just by typing ‘bouncy castle’ into the search engine. You will be given a choice of two varieties namely, the residential and commercial variety. The commercial variety is more durable and costlier than the residential one.

Getting in a bouncy castle is a better option if thinking about problems of storage. However, I would say that it is mandatory to go through the user manual and make sure that the contract covers risks that could be run in its usage. It is also imperative to clarify any doubts you might have with the contractor before installing the bouncy castle, as it is a question of your kids’ safety.

What are you waiting for now? Arrange to install a bouncy castle or tower for your next kids’ party.

The majority of insects will defend themselves if they feel threatened. This is fairly amazing when you think about how big insects are compared with the mammalian interloper. Most insects will only atttack if you wander into their territory. There are also insects that have to drink blood but they actively seek their prey. This type includes insects like mosquitoes and fleas.

Ants form the biggest section of biters. All ants will try to bite if they feel the need, but most black ants simply do not possess big enough mandibles (or jaws) to get a grasp. The big exception in all ant and ant-like species are the soldiers, which have colossal mandibles compared to the workers.

Red ants can bite with or without poison and some sting too. Formic acid is their normal chemical weapon. Some ants inject it, which is what we feel when we get bitten by red ants, but other ants spray it into the eyes of its aggressors.

The most agonizing sting of any insect is delivered by the Bullet Ant of Central and South America. The Bullet Ant’s sting has the top rating possible on the Schmidt Sting Pain Index. The scale goes from zero to four; zero being painless (to humans) through two for bees and wasps to four for excruciating pain.

The Fire Ant, which is famous for its agonizing bite ranks a 1.2 on this scale, but level 1.8 is likened to having a staple shot into your cheek. The European honey bee is on level two and the Red Harvester Ant is on number three.

Some bites and stings are not so high on the scale but can still be deadly. The Jack Jumper Ant is in this group and individuals, especially hypersensitives, have been known to die from Fire Ant stings, which inject piperidine alkaloids rather than formic acid.

The mandibles of the Trap Jaw Ant are the fastest closing jaws in the animal kingdom. They have been measured at 230 KPH (143 MPH). Another extraordinary ant defence is carried out by a Malaysian species: it ejects its stomach unto its aggressor. The stomach acids contain acetophones which completely immobilize insects. Unfortunately, the soldier dies because its stomach has been torn out.

Bees, ants and wasps are all related in the order known as Hymenoptera. Bees and wasps just sting although some wasps do have large jaws as well. One definition of a wasp is ‘any insect of the order Hymenoptera that is neither a bee nor an ant’ (Wikipedia).

Not all wasps are black and yellow. There are not many insects that do not have a type of wasp preying on it, which makes them very important in the biocontrol of harmful insects. A lot of wasps do not sting their prey to kill it for food, they sting it to paralyze it.

When paralyzed, the wasp lays her eggs in the prey, which becomes fresh food for her young when they hatch out. This is usually the only time that a wasp eats flesh in its whole life, because adult wasps eat nectar and honey like bees.

When a bee stings it releases pheromones which encourage other bees nearby to sting as well. The most aggressive stingers though are vespid wasps (common black and yellow wasps).

Fleas, ticks and bed bugs, unlike mosquitoes, really feed on blood, that is they use it for food, whereas the mosquito uses it as the ‘white’ of her eggs. There have been times in our history when losing a few drops of blood to a flea was not the worst thing about being bitten by them. They also carried the Plague, which wiped out a large percentage of the population of Europe a number of times.

Spiders and scorpions make up the causes of the majority of insect bites although they are comparatively rare.

Ready to have a root-tooting good time? Do you enjoy freedom and speed? Well, Razor Scooter is flying in style and with fantastic colours. Today, numerous people use the Razor as a toy for the young, but some do use it for sport too. A lot of youngsters like to do stunts with the Razor. The Razor is for kids of all ages.

People of all ages are riding them everywhere. Back in 1999, the Razor Scooter appeared to the public and really became popular in 2000. It was invented by Micro Mobility System. At that time it was manufactured by JD Corporation.

Now the Razor is manufactured by Razor USA, which is out of Cerritos, California. Whilst the market fell out for scooters, Wim Ouboter, the owner, kept working to enhance the Razor.

The body of the razor is an aluminum frame and has a hinged fender covering the rear wheel. This is pressed down with the foot and acts as a spoon break. This adds further control for the youngster. When a release latch is opened, the handlebars and headtube fold up.

This makes the Razor very convenient for carrying and for storage. The Razor is very lightweight so it is easy to handle. Don?t let this concern you, as it is very hard-wearing.

The Razor comes in numerous colors and models. Some even have light up wheels. There are many models to choose from to fit your own requirements and comfort. Some of the colors available are red, black, pink, blue, and green.

Then if you are really into colors you can buy the ‘Hello Kitty’ or ‘Sweet Pea’. There are also electric Razors on the market for those that choose to go that way. The cost of Razors varies with the size and model that you buy. You can save some money by checking the Internet and finding a sale on one.

As with any product, there are safety guidelines that go with the Razor. It is advisable to wear the gear that is designed for people riding on a Razor. Those would be a helmet, and knee and elbow pads. Wearing lace up shoes with rubber soles is encouraged. It is also recommended not to wear sandals or to go barefoot.

Before you get on be sure to check your Razor. Make certain the handlebars are safe, tighten all bolts, and modify the steering tube to the correct height. Also make sure the handle bars, steel tube and steel tube extension are all locked into place.

Also check the wheels for any wear and tear. If this is your first time riding a Razor refer to the owner?s manual. It is wise to avoid water, sand, gravel, in-line skaters, and speed bumps. A small bump can make the front wheel stop which is a big cause of accidents.

If you happen to be one of the lucky owners of a Razor you will find a great deal of pleasure with them. Safety has to be a big concern. Take care and happy riding!

If this piece has whetted your appetite for a Razor Pocket Bike or one of the others in the range|, just go over to our web site now for more information and bargains at Razor A Scooter

Entomology at its most simple is the study of insects and associated animals. It is a subsection of biology and zoology. The animal class of Insecta is by far the largest group of animals in the world.

To give you an notion of how big the issue is and how much work there is yet to be done, a bit more than a million insects have been classified, but it is estimated that there are 30,000,000 more species to classify.

Lots of these insects do not even have names yet and the habits of lots of those with names is still a complete mystery. This part of the study of entomology: the study of insects’ relationship with humans, the environment and other plants and animals is vital work.

This means that entomology has a bearing on agriculture, biology, chemistry, criminology, forensic science, ecology, economics, food, forestry, genetics, health, trade, pharmaceuticals, robotics and veterinary medicine just for a kick off!

This means that there are many kinds of jobs in which a knowledge of entomology plays a useful role. For example, if you are interested in insects and computers, you could develop computer programs for farmers to help them plan for all types of situations from attacks by pests to pollination by bees.

If you like to be in the field, you could work in forestry. If you like chemistry, you could work on chemicals like insect repellents

If you like maths, you could work on statistics, insect populations, growth predictions etc. In other areas you could work on the genetic engineering of plants to withstand insect attack; work in a zoo breeding and feeding insects both for food for other animals and as exhibits or work in scenes of crimes using the insect life on a corpse to help provide proof for an investigation.

With so many types of jobs on offer, it is easy to find a branch of entomology to interest you. There is also a boundless supply of specimens – there are approximately 1,600,000,000 insects on the planet for every human being and there is no kind of terrestrial life on the planet that does not rely on insects for its existence. It is also the most diverse life form on the planet.

A colossal problem that is growing year on year is the shortage of food, yet it is likely that 40% of all food produced is either consumed or spoiled by insects. If that single problem could be solved, it would give us a breathing space to work out the problem in the right manner. It is obvious that entomology will play a pivotal role in solving this difficulty.

Entomologists have a huge deal of effort to do in protecting the environment and one of the most multifaceted environments is the rain forest. Approximately half the world’s species of plants and animals are discovered only in rain forests.

Lots of of these species have not been classified and they may hold the keys to curing a lot of of the most lethal illnesses affecting mankind today.

A century ago, the diseases that killed most people worldwide were not the ones that we confront now and that is mainly because entomologists learned the insects that spread the disease (mosquitoes, ticks and fleas) and learned how to control them.

Nowhere near as many individuals die nowadays from malaria, Yellow Fever and dengue as they did 100 years ago, because we know how to control mosquito populations and individuals realize that it is the mosquito spreading the illnesses.

These are the life-threatening illnesses, but think about how much money we spend safeguarding our pets and livestock. And how much do people spend on killing cockroaches, silverfish and bed bugs?

There is a huge amount of money being spent on insects so lots of jobs are out there for those with an interest in bugs.

There are over 3,500 species of the mosquito and they have been about for more than 30 million years. The word mosquito comes from the Spanish and Portuguese word for little fly. They are similar to crane flies and chironomid flies. Mosquitoes are a member of the Culicidae family, which means midge or gnat.

Both males and females feed on nectar and plant juices, but in some species, the female has to feed on humans, because she needs the nutrients protein and iron to help her produce eggs. The females? feeding on humans is the reason for numerous infectious illnesses that has an effect on millions of humans each year.

The adult female lays her eggs in still water. This could be a lake, bucket of water, a puddle, and in some cases, a few droplets on a plant.

The mosquito is a holometabolous insect. This means that it will go through four phases which are outlined here:

The first stage is the larvae. This is the recently hatched phase of various insects that vary considerably from the adult.

The next stage is known as the pupa. This is a non-feeding time that takes place between the larvae and the adult phases.

The pupa floats on the water and the adult mosquito will emerge from the pupa at this time. The adult mosquito lives between four and eight weeks.

The mosquito has three senses. They are chemical, visual, and heat. There are certain things that attract a mosquito to a person.

Carbon dioxide and lactic acid attract a mosquito. These are found in warm blooded mammals and birds. Regular breathing puts out these types of gases. Some sweat will also send off these gases.

Garments that contrast with the backdrop will interest a mosquito also. Heat is easily detected by a mosquito.

Mosquitoes can be found in a cool spot during the day whilst it is hot. If they are disturbed, they will bite during this time. They are more lively while it is cooler.

Mosquitoes are known to infect humans with numerous kinds of illnesses. They carry viruses and parasites from human to human. Some common viral diseases are malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, and Chikungunya.

It is likely that more than two million individuals die from these illnesses every year. It has been found that most of these diseases are carried by ?elderly? females.

There are many products on the market to help prevent mosquito bites and chancing acquiring a deadly infection. Lots of these products contain DEET. It is extremely recommended. DEET can also be applied full strength, but 20-50% is normally powerful enough.

Some of the brand name insect repellents are: Off, Cutter, White Mountain, and Repel. There are also candles, wipes, nets, traps, and foggers obtainable on the market. There are also organic repellents on the market. You can also make your own repellent.

Smoke from campfires and mud or clay assists keep mosquitoes from biting. Some herbs, such as Rosemary, will also keep mosquitoes away.

Who would have thought that the London Underground is home to a unique species of mosquito? The species is called the London Underground mosquito and is considered to have evolved from Culex pipiens. The London Underground species has been dubbed Culex pipiens molestus, because it is a vigorous biter.

It is not new, but it is comparatively new in biological terms. Molestus is known to have bitten Londoners during the Second World War whilst they were taking refuge during the air raids. However, there are other references to a mosquito with the same name, molestus, 170 years before the war, when there was no underground railway system in London or anywhere else in the world.

This mosquito was first discovered in the London Underground, which is why it got its name, but it can be discovered in metro and underground railway stations all over the world. No one really knows a lot concerning this insect species yet.

Some people suggest that it is a variant of a local Culex pipiens that has adapted to living in warmer, subterranean tunnels, whilst others say that is a southern (and therefore warmer) variant of C. pipiens that is able to live in the colder north because it has colonized the warm train tunnels of the underground systems.

Yet others, notably Kate Byrne and Richard Nichols, suggest that it is a totally different species from Culex pipiens. Their proof for saying this is that there are differences between pipiens and molestus: they display very different behavioural patterns and do not mate readily with each other.

C. pipiens molestus will bite rats, mice and humans and dies in cold temperatures but remains active all year round, whereas C. pipiens can tolerate cold weather, only bites birds and hibernates if the weather gets very cold.

On the rare occasions when the two varieties cross breed, the eggs are infertile, which implies that they are distantly related if at all. Recent studies suggest that molestus originated in one source but spread rapidly around the world, perhaps in freight.

Second-hand tyres have been blamed for spreading molestus around the world. There is a colossal international trade in second hand tyres and it is notoriously problematic to get all the water out of a tyre that has been left in the rain. Mosquitoes can breed in a minuscule amount of water, so this is a possibility.

There is a strange and not entirely explained twist to the story of the molestus, the American version of molestus pipiens still bites birds which leads some individuals to say that molestus is a separate species, but that it has formed a hybrid in America with pipiens.

This is fairly frightening, but quite possible, because the American pipiens can transmit human encephalitis caused by the West Nile virus, an eruption of which hit New York in 1999.

There is a lot more to find out concerning the London Underground mosquito, since the story is only just beginning to unfold. The true story will almost certainly come out of America where this new mosquito has proved to be the most dangerous.

Owen Jones, the author of this article writes on several subjects, but is currently involved with finding a home remededy for mosquito bites.

Raccoons, they are so cute to watch from the inside of your home. However, when humans come into contact with them in their natural habitat, it is self-evident that they are not an animal one would want for a pet. They are mammals and are known to be nocturnal and omnivorous.

Now, because they are omnivores, they are scavengers too. So they will find a way into your backyard and patio. If a raccoon finds dog or cat food on a garden patio, it will not hesitate to eat it.

When a raccoon knows where to find a free meal, it will come back for more. In fact, a raccoon with bring its family with it to make the most of a free meal. The raccoon is most likely to consume nuts such as walnuts and acorns in its own natural habitat. If, on the other hand, a raccoon wanders into a suburban setting, like the garden of a home, it will eat whatever is on the ground or in a rubbish container.

The raccoon is known for scrambling into, and overturning, waste cans to search for waste food for their next meal. Raccoons were first spotted in a city in Cincinnati in the 1920?s and then were seen in such cities as San Francisco, Chicago and Toronto in the 1950?s.

The raccoon is chiefly to be found in North American states and territories such as Panama, Bahamas, Cuba and Jamaica., but what’s more in Europe too.

Raccoons have a good memory and have been studied by a variety of scientists past and present. With their memory and intelligence, it is no surprise that they can recall where they discovered their last meal and will return to that same region.

If a raccoon knows where to return for a meal, it will, more likely than not, endeavor to get into the home it is stealing food from. If a raccoon is clever enough to know where to go back for a meal, with family in tow, it will find a route to into a home and search out a food supply.

When a raccoon is found in the backyard, or inside a home, it is not wise to try and catch it. The best a homeowner can do is shoo the raccoon, or its family, away and call the animal control in your city. As cute and furry as raccoons look, they are not to be touched or picked up.

A raccoon is a wild animal and will do whatever it takes to protect itself and its family. It is also vital to realize that raccoons carry sickness. A raccoon carries rabies and will pass it on to a pet or human by a bite. The rabies virus is in the raccoon?s saliva.

As the raccoon becomes ?comfortable? visiting the outside of a home, it will attempt to get inside if it sees a way in through a back door or attic window. As stated above, raccoons are intelligent and fantastic natural climbers. They will have no problem climbing up the side of a home, look for an open window into an attic and climb in.

If a raccoon has its ?kits? in tow, they will all find their way into the attic and create not only a lot of noise, but will do their best to get into the home to search for their next meal.

Mosquito is a common insect which belongs to the family Culicidae. The word mosquito is of Spanish or Portuguese origin which means ?little fly?. A mosquito passes through four stages in its life cycle i.e. egg, larva, pupa and adult. The fully developed mosquito is also called an imago. Eggs are laid by adult females in still water like puddles, lakes, ponds, or containers etc.

The life of an grown-up mosquito is four-eight weeks long. The mouthparts of mosquitoes are adapted to pierce the skin of animals and plants. Males feed on nectar and the juices of plants while the females need to feed on blood to obtain nutrients in order to lay eggs. Over 3,500 species of mosquitoes are to be found in the world.

The females of some species feed on humans and are the cause of numerous contagious illnesses. Egg development and blood digestion are two very important events in the life of female mosquitoes. They serve as a vector to transfer viruses and parasites from one person to another.

Mosquito control is necessary for getting rid of harmful mosquitoes and the illnesses spread by them. It is estimated that mosquitoes spread diseases to over 700 million individuals in Asia, Africa, Mexico, Central America and South America. Numerous deaths are the result of contagious illnesses caused by the bites of mosquitoes.

When mosquito control was less common, thousands of deaths were caused each year. Malaria and yellow fever were known to be caused by mosquito bites. WestNile disease is also transmitted by mosquitoes. Dengue disease and Encephalitis are other contagious illnesses brought about by mosquitoes.

Natural predators of mosquitoes include the dragonfly which helps control the number of mosquitoes by eating them. The reaction to the bites of mosquitoes can be immediate or delayed. The irritation on the bites is the result of an immunity response.

A number of anti-itch treatments are available on the market. Some medications are taken orally whilst others are for external use only. Itching can be reduced by applying an adhesive tape to the region of the bite or by sucking on the area through a straw.

A very effective anti-inflammatory agent is Tea tree oil, which lessens itching. Insecticides may also be used to kill the larvae of the mosquito. Source reduction is a very effective way to control mosquitoes by removing still water. Biocontrol is a different remedy by which natural enemies of mosquitoes are used to reduce their population.

Chemical pesticides will kill adult mosquitoes because they are the most harmful from the point of view of spreading disease. DDT was used for the control of mosquitoes on a big scale but now it?s use is banned in some countries. Different sorts of repellents are used to deter mosquitoes from attacking. DEET is used as an good repellent.

Picaridin and IR3535 are also very widely used CDC-recommended repellents. Oil of Eucalyptus is a natural repellent and it is highly recommended. It is very important to take safety precautions to protect yourself from the contagious illnesses borne by mosquitoes.

Mankind has to live with insects because we could not live without them. Insects are essential for clearing waste both human and natural, but occasionally they are a nuisance and that is when we have to carry out some local, temporary insect control. This is normally when insects make a nuisance of themselves within our personal space.

The most common causes of complaint are mosquitoes in the garden and ants in the house. Enjoying a drink and a chat in the backyard on a warm evening can be miserable if there are mosquitoes making constant attacks and it is a constant worry if you always have to protect yourself and your food from foraging ants.

So, what can you do in the manner of insect control? There are a number of methods of dealing with mosquitoes and it is best not to rely on only one course of action. Occasionally, mosquitoes are only a problem for a few days a year, but if they are a constant problem you have to do more.

The best method of control is prevention. Mosquitoes can breed in half-an-inch of water, so the first job is to eradicate their breeding grounds. Make certain that the drains, do actually drain away and that the gutters are not blocked. Then up-turn anything in the backyard that can hold water: flower pots, buckets, containers and boats etc or cover them over.

If you have a water feature put guppies or goldfish in it, because they like to eat mosquito larvae. This ought to almost solve your difficulty, but a few mosquitoes will still come in from next door, so as dusk approaches, hang one of those fly zappers near where you sit.

They have a black or ultraviolet light within an electrified coil and are very effective. Hang one roughly six or seven feet off the ground. Some devices claim to be able to clear half an acre of airspace.

Finally, on a very local level you can put insect repellent on your skin or / and clothes and have a tennis racquet style insect zapper for the one or two determined mosquitoes.

Ants will come into your home to live occasionally, but usually they have a nest outdoors but they have found a good, regular source of food in your house, so they have added it to their list of places to visit every day.

So, think about your house carefully, is it a bit grubby? Do you often leave food out? Do you do the cleaning up regularly and do you wipe the prep surfaces down often? A small sticky patch of sugary water can feed a host of ants all day, so your kitchen does have to be kept really clean.

If that is not the cause of their visits, you will have to find their nest. That is not a problem, merely follow a line of ants back to their nest which is probably a hole in the ground. Buy one of those poisons which kills by poisoning and by contact. Place some on a bit of tile of glass and leave it outside their nest.

The ants will consume it and die and get it on them and die. They will take it back inside and give it to the others who will die and they will get groomed by their comrades, who will also get it on them and die. This process usually takes a couple of weeks to a few months, but you will see a large drop in ant numbers within a week.

The study of insects is known as entomology. Entomology is a sub-section of biology and is one of the oldest sciences. Man has studied the habits of insects, normally with a view to eradicating them, since the first plague of locusts landed on primitive farmers’ crops tens of thousands of years ago. However, entomology was not really recognized and learned as a science until the Sixteenth Century.

Entomology has had numerous famous devotees but the most famous was Charles Darwin. More recent entomologists are Karl von Frisch the Nobel Prize winner for medicine in 1973 and E. O. Wilson the two time Pulitzer prize winner.

Entomologists are also frequently credited with helping solve murders by studying the insects that are discovered on and in the dead body. This is very possible and not merely a trick used in Hollywood films.

The first thing to realise is that not all creepy crawlies are insects. For example, spiders are not insects, but many entomologists are not so strict and have an interest in arachnids (spiders), worms, slugs and snails.

All insects pass through several stages of life, but there are two sorts of insect development ‘simple metamorphosis’ and ‘complete metamorphosis’.

The first sort includes most beetles and bugs like bed bugs. They are born as eggs and hatch into larvae (nymphs), which, whilst not perfect copies of their parents do look a bit like them

The second sort are also born as eggs, also hatch into larvae, but they look nothing like their parents – so dissimilar in fact that if you do not know what they are, you could not imagine. The larva then grows into a pupa when it appears to become dormant, this is not the case though, there is plenty going on and when it comes out from the pupal stage it is unrecognizable. Butterflies are like this.

If you want to study insects, you have to focus because there are at least 1.3 million species of insects that we have discovered so far and there are plenty more to name and classify.

You would be forgiven for thinking that these unknown insects, worms, slugs and beetles et cetera are all in remotest Africa or in deep jungles, but last year a carnivorous slug was discovered in a backyard in the centre of Cardiff in the UK.

In order to study insects, you usually have to catch them without killing them. This means nets and traps. it is simple enough to get a butterfly net (or fishing net) and you can create your own pitfall traps for ground beetles. You will also need a good book to help you classify your find and a magnifying glass to be able to better see it.

One word of caution though: you may think that there are too many insects and that no one really cares about them, but this is not true. There are many insects in every country that are protected and you will be breaking the law by capturing them or hurting them, so the first thing to do is find out which ones you may study and which ones it is better to leave alone.

Everyone ought to know fundamental First Aid techniques, but it is especially important for those who participate in potentially more dangerous sports or activities such as hunting. There are all types of things that can happen to you while hunting.

Besides getting shot, you could cut yourself while skinning an animal, you could be attacked by an animal, you could fall and break a leg or you could suffer a routine heart attack that could have happened anywhere.

However, what makes all these accidents more dangerous when you are hunting is the likelihood that you will be located miles from anywhere whilst it occurs. There is no one to turn to except your companion. No ambulances, no doctors and no hospitals for tens of miles.

The first thing that everyone ought to know is CPR, which stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which is an emergency procedure consisting of external cardiac massage and artificial respiration. It is vital to know CPR techniques for everyone not merely hunters.

You can learn CPR at several local institutions including the hospital, the fire station, some schools, some scouting organizations and some other institutions like the Boys’ Brigade or the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade.

These institutions can usually teach you over CPR if you want, such as what to do in a crisis. There are certain procedures that are common to most if not all crisis situations. For example, the first rule is to always take care of yourself first. Then assess the situation and make the area safe for yourself and anyone who may come into it.

This might sound selfish, but you are no help to anyone if you permit yourself to become injured and the rescue services will be very cautious if the area is unsafe when they get there. Then either begin first aid procedures or call the rescue services depending on the situation.

Healthcare staff teach the ABC method of applying First Aid. ABC stands for ‘Airway, Breathing and Circulation’. So, first look in the mouth and at the throat. Look for and remove any blockages such as blood, dentures or foreign bodies.

Then check for breathing. If the patient has ceased breathing, endeavour to resuscitate him or her because the brain cannot survive longer than a couple of minutes without oxygen.

Next check the heart beat. If it has stopped endeavour to get it going again. If there is copious bleeding from a wound, try to staunch the bleeding by applying pressure to it through a clean cloth. Get help if there are a number of wounds but apply tourniquets to arms and legs that are bleeding badly. You can use a belt or stockings as make-shift tourniquets.

If the patient has experienced a serious fall, the first rule is not to move the person. You can cause serious injury to someone with broken bones by moving them. You can even cause paralysis, so if someone has fallen, enquire whether they can move their fingers and toes (a sign that the spine is probably undamaged) and then phone the rescue services.

Two of the best safety rules while going hunting, are to tell someone where you are going and never to go alone. If you hunt with the same person regularly, why not both go to a First Aid course together?

In the late summer of 1999, there was an epidemic of encephalitis and meningitis in New York. To begin with, all the sufferers came from an eight square kilometer area centered on Queens and the Bronx.

Later, it spread further, although there were merely 59 cases and seven deaths – all in older individuals. 677 individuals were tested in the original survey, 19 of which tested positive for meningoencephalitis.

Going by the size of the population of New York, it was estimated that between 3,500 and 13,000 people (average: 8,200) had contracted West Nile virus. There were almost certainly a lot more than that, but serious indications usually only show in the young and the old.

Those in the in-between age group probably reckoned that they had a bad cold, which means that fewer than one percent of sufferers displayed severe neurological symptoms.

At first, it was wondered whether this outbreak could be the result of an act of terrorism, but others suspected mosquitoes. Investigation concentrated on St. Louis encephalitis. However, when it was thought to check for West Nile virus, the number of cases increased.

The reason for the outbreak was soon confirmed to be a West Nile-like virus based on the identification of viral infection in human, avian, and mosquito samples.

This had not been considered because the New York epidemic was the first time that West Nile virus had been seen in the West.

Then recent bird deaths were remembered. Substantial numbers of wild birds, especially crows, had passed away recently in the area and there were deaths at the Bronx Zoo of exotic birds too.

Examination of the corpses of these birds showed traces of encephalitis which resembled West Nile virus (WNV). When doctors knew what to look for, they discovered comparable traits in the brains of the dead humans

The authorities instantly initiated widespread measures to reduce the population of Culex pipiens, the mosquito in the region that specializes in attacking birds. The public was informed and helplines were set up – by the end of September more than 150,000 calls had been made.

The local authorities continued to spray and handed out 300,000 aerosols of DEET and 750,000 public health leaflets, which recommended cleaning up the backyard, not going out at dusk or dawn and covering up bare skin.

WNV is an arbovirus (arthropod-borne virus), which means that it is conveyed to humans by arthropods (insects), normally the tick or the mosquito. Previously, WNV had just been seen in Uganda, where it was first discovered and in isolated cases in Europe and South Africa.

A report concluded that it was “unclear whether the virus that caused this outbreak is a previously identified strain of WNV or a new variant”, however now recent proof appears to suggest that a new mosquito – a hybrid of C. pipiens – living in the New York metro was to blame.

This is still not definite, but if it is the case, then the whole world ought to take care, because the New York ‘hybrid’ is related to the London Underground mosquito which inhabits nearly every underground railway station on the planet.

If you have a swimming pool, you have to be aware of the safety aspects regarding that pool. There is no counter-argument, that is one of the legal responsibilities of an owner of a swimming pool . You are going to get people coming around who cannot swim; guests who have eaten or drunken too much and should not swim; children and skinny-dipping teenage intruders and you have to supply a safe environment in which to swim for all or them or decline access.

The first area of swimming pool safety to tackle is the denial of access and the easiest way of doing this is the assembly of a security fence. It will deny access to passing children, interlopers and friends who came around to see you on the off-chance when you were not in.

There are thousands of drownings by misadventure in backyard swimming pools every year – most of them are children and drunks, who would still be alive today, if the pool had been locked up.

If you have your own children who cannot swim, get them taught as soon as you can and drill some safety routines into them. For example, they must never get in the pool without an adult supervising them and they must always wear flotation devices, which means that you should always have flotation devices on hand.

You will require waist rings, arm bands and life jackets. Those for use in a swimming pool by children are not costly and can be inflatable. It is also a good idea to have some pieces of styrofoam floating about just in case someone gets tired unexpectedly.

Make sure that there is always a capable swimmer on hand who knows basic First Aid, especially artificial respiration with particular reference to drowning. In fact, why not take the whole family down to the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade and all get your life-savers certificate? The least you should have is a proper life belt – ocean-going – on a rope that is long enough to reach anywhere in your pool and tie off the loose end.

It might be possible to get away with not having a security fence, if you use an above ground swimming pool, but you will have to check with the local authorities on that one. You will also have to take away the access ladders when it is not in use. Forgetting to do so could equate to criminal negligence if anyone were to drown in your pool.

Swimming pool safety is primarily about saving lives but it is also about the peace of mind of the owner of the swimming pool. If someone were to drown in your pool and you knew that you had not done everything within your power to prevent it, you would almost certainly carry that burden of guilt with you for the rest of your life, especially if it was a child and even more so if it was your child or the child of one of your guests.

There is no question that Formula One racing is a gripping motor sport for those interested in cars, speed, engineering and design. The design of these Formula One cars is crucial to the speed that the car will travel at, but it is also imperative for the safety of the driver.

For this latter reason, there are strict design rules applying to all cars in this motor sport and any car that does not abide by the rules is disqualified from taking part in the races. It is rare for car designers to infringe these rules because the cost of driving in a race and the benefits from doing well are massive.

Having said that, Formula One car racing teams push the design features of their cars up to the limit. The key to gaining maximum speed with maximum fuel efficiency is having as aerodynamic a design as possible. These cars are as well designed as any fighter jet, but the foremost difference is that fighter jets are intended to leave the ground whereas cars are not.

Therefore, another vital part of the design is creating down force to keep the tyres firmly on the ground. It is important for a number of reasons for the tyres to have a decent grip on the track. Without this grip or traction, the car cannot accelerate, but without it they cannot stop either. Therefore down force and tyres are a major factor in speed and safety.

The brakes are extraordinary as well as you can imagine. They are basically the same as those used in stock road cars, yet the components are rather extraordinary. because they have to work and remain working at high speeds, this means that they develop high temperatures.

Regular metal would buckle or even melt, so high quality carbon fibre composite disk brakes are utilized instead in conjunction with brake pads of special composites which are often extremely secret. There are a great deal of jealously guarded secrets in the designs of contemporary Formula One racing cars.

The foremost part of a racing car is the monocoque, which is the section that holds the engine and the driver. The car’s suspension is also mounted on the monocoque so it is clear that it has to be very strong. This strength is normally gained by making it from carbon fibre. There are also many safety features built into the monocoque for the benefit of the driver.

The engine has to be light-weight, efficient yet powerful, which is a very tall order indeed. There is now also an FIA ruling that the engine has to last for more than one race weekend. Engine failure is the main cause of pulling out of a Formula One race early. The gearbox suffers equally in a fast race. Another rule states that all gearboxes have to be manual – no automatic gearboxes. This adds to the wear and tear.

The suspension is manually adaptable so that it can be fine-tuned to every race track and the conditions prevailing on a race track at any given time. The suspension is not there for the comfort of the driver but to increase the likelihood of the car winning.

If you want to get into some form of motor sport, but are absolutely appalled by the costs concerned, perhaps you have overlooked Go Kart Racing. OK, nothing is cheap anymore, but go karting is relatively cheap compared to its far dearer cousins like Formula One, Formula Drifting, NASCAR and Cross Country Rallying. You can get into go kart racing as a spectator, as an investor in a team or as part of an active team as a mechanic or driver.

Or you could use go kart racing as a spring board into the dearer types of motor sport. You can learn a lot about driving, designing and making cars by starting with go karts. After all, the principals are basically the same, but the parts in karts are a lot cheaper.

In the remainder of this article, we will take a look at some of the components and safety aspects of go karts along with rough typical prices.

The first thing you will need to investigate is the type of kart you want. There are different degrees as there are in other motor sports. as a beginner, you actually ought to begin with the low powered karts, because you will need to learn a lot of new driving skills and quite a few safety regulations before you move on to more highly-rated karts.

If you find the cost of a new kart a little high or if you want to leap-frog past the lower stages of karting as quickly as you can, you could think about buying a second hand kart for the first couple of stages, just buying a new one once you reach the stage of karting that you want to be at. However, do not make the mistake of trying to run before you can walk.

Entry level go karts are not costly. For instance, at the time of writing, a battery operated go kart costs about $300-$400+ while a petrol powered kart will cost $600-$700+

Although go karts have a very low centre of gravity and do not tip over easily, it can happen and collisions do occur so wearing the correct safety attire is essential. Again, you could purchase a second hand set of racing safety clothes, which are basically the same as for motorbiking, if you just want to get going on the cheap.

You will require a jacket and trousers or a one-piece jump suit; a helmet, gloves, a neck-collar and boots. This little lot could set you back anywhere between $300 and $400, but it will save broken bones or worse, particularly in the period a couple of months after you begin when you think that you know it all. Accidents occur once people are over confident.

You will also need a couple of common spare parts, a spare tyre, fuel and oil, say $250 and you are ready to take your first lessons in your own go kart. Or maybe you would rather learn in someone else’s kart first? This is not a bad thought, because it will give you some experience with different types of karts, which will help you choose which one you want (or can afford).

The most costly aspect of having a swimming pool is the construction of it. Maintenance is also expensive. Therefore, those who have garden swimming pools usually strive to get as many hours of use out it as they can. This means sitting in the garden at the poolside whenever possible and inviting friends and family around to share it all with them.

However, there is one more thing that you can do to increase the number of hours you can spend in your pool – you can extend the season that you are able to use it in. The temperature of the water is the only real restriction on swimming outdoors, it does not really matter whether it is snowing or raining as long as the water is warm enough.

Swimming in the rain, the mist and the snow is actually great fun, at least as much fun as swimming in the sunshine, as long as the water is warm enough and there is no lightening. The answer is to fit a water heater into your swimming pool system.

A swimming pool water heater can have a drastic impact on the amount of time you can spend in your pool. If you set the thermostat at 78-80 F (about 25 C), you can double the amount of time you can spend in the water. If you live in a warm part of the country, you might just require to heat the water by a few degrees to be able swim in comfort.

A large body of heated water will lose most of its heat through its surface area, so it is a good concept to cover your pool with a decent quality insulation blanket-cum-pool cover. The insulated pool blankets will reduce your heating bills quite significantly and it will raise the level of pool safety considerably too.

The most common systems for heating swimming pool water are liquid petroleum gas (LPG) or oil fired. These systems are simple to set up and relatively cheap to run. Electricity is also used, but it is not economical. If you live in the correct area meaning that you only require to raise the water temperature a few degrees, you could use solar power.

The problem with solar power is the profit margin the retailers want to make. If you make your own panels, buy in kit form or purchase secondhand panels, solar power would be the best approach, if you have the sun, but not quite enough heat.

At the time, gas-powered swimming pool water heating is still by far the simplest to set up and run and so offers the best solution to heating your pool. You will be able to get LPG water heaters secondhand from numerous sources and you will be able to purchase new from the Net as well. EBay is another good source of LPG swimming pool water heaters

Safety is a very necessary part of most sports, but even more so with some, like kiteboarding or kitesurfing as it is also called. It involves using a kite of between two and five metres in length to power surf across a flat surface of water.

This is where the greatest danger comes in, a sudden burst of wind can lift you off the water and carry you away. When the gust of wind drops, you could get dumped on rocks or slammed into the side of a building. The option is to let go of the kite but probably lose it. This gets costly, but being left alone in the open sea is not very attractive either.

The fact is that you can never be entirely safe while you are kiteboarding. However, the least you can do is make an effort. So wear a safety helmet and a vest that will both minimize injury from a crash yet also float. These two things alone will protect you from the lesser types of impact and help you to swim back to shore if needed.

Gloves and knee protectors will also help as will a pair of impact-resistant running or jogging shoes or trainers.

Never disable, and always make use of, any safety devices built into your apparatus. It is there for a point. Some of these features might be quick release buckles or buttons and safety straps so that the kite cannot be torn from your grasp, leaving you stranded far out at sea.

Be sure of the winds that you ride. Both on-shore and off-shore winds are dangerous because the one will carry you out to sea and the other could drag you into cliffs or buildings. The safest wind to ride is a side-shore wind. A side-shore wind will be blowing across the bay, parallel to the shore.

It sounds too obvious to say ‘avoid collisions’, but in a way a crash is more perilous at sea than on land. It will take longer to rescue you and longer to transport you to hospital and you may drown. Therefore, do not kiteboard in busy waters – where there are boats or swimmers. Strive to give a hundred metres clearance to anything that would hurt you if you hit it.

Check the weather forecast and the predicted wind speed and use a kite that is appropriate for that wind speed and your level of skill. Do not endeavor to run before you can walk.

Once your kite is aloft, get out on to the sea (or water) as soon as you can and when you are coming in, keep the kite low, so that there is less chance of you being carried away into the road or buildings.

Carry a knife when you go kitesurfing because lines becoming tangled up is not an uncommon phenomenon but this can have several unpleasant effects. It can lead you off to where you do not wish to go and it can snarl you up cutting deep into your flesh. Be certain that the knife itself poses no threat by keeping it in a robust sheath. Wear safety goggles to avoid being blinded by spray.
