Those would be a helmet, and knee and elbow pads. Wearing lace up shoes with rubber soles is encouraged. It is also recommended not to wear sandals or to go barefoot.

Before you get on be sure to check your Razor. Make certain the handlebars are safe, tighten all bolts, and modify the steering tube to the correct height. Also make sure the handle bars, steel tube and steel tube extension are all locked into place.

Also check the wheels for any wear and tear. If this is your first time riding a Razor refer to the owner?s manual. It is wise to avoid water, sand, gravel, in-line skaters, and speed bumps. A small bump can make the front wheel stop which is a big cause of accidents.

If you happen to be one of the lucky owners of a Razor you will find a great deal of pleasure with them. Safety has to be a big concern. Take care and happy riding!

July 16th, 2011The Pesty Mosquito

There are over 3,500 species of the mosquito and they have been about for more than 30 million years. The word mosquito comes from the Spanish and Portuguese word for little fly. They are similar to crane flies and chironomid flies. Mosquitoes are a member of the Culicidae family, which means midge or gnat.

Both males and females feed on nectar and plant juices, but in some species, the female has to feed on humans, because she needs the nutrients protein and iron to help her produce eggs. The females? feeding on humans is the reason for numerous infectious illnesses that has an effect on millions of humans each year.

The adult female lays her eggs in still water. This could be a lake, bucket of water, a puddle, and in some cases, a few droplets on a plant.

The mosquito is a holometabolous insect. This means that it will go through four phases which are outlined here:

The first stage is the larvae. This is the recently hatched phase of various insects that vary considerably from the adult.

The next stage is known as the pupa. This is a non-feeding time that takes place between the larvae and the adult phases.

The pupa floats on the water and the adult mosquito will emerge from the pupa at this time. The adult mosquito lives between four and eight weeks.

The mosquito has three senses. They are chemical, visual, and heat. There are certain things that attract a mosquito to a person.

Carbon dioxide and lactic acid attract a mosquito. These are found in warm blooded mammals and birds. Regular breathing puts out these types of gases. Some sweat will also send off these gases.

Garments that contrast with the backdrop will interest a mosquito also. Heat is easily detected by a mosquito.

Mosquitoes can be found in a cool spot during the day whilst it is hot. If they are disturbed, they will bite during this time. They are more lively while it is cooler.

Mosquitoes are known to infect humans with numerous kinds of illnesses. They carry viruses and parasites from human to human. Some common viral diseases are malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, and Chikungunya.

It is likely that more than two million individuals die from these illnesses every year. It has been found that most of these diseases are carried by ?elderly? females.

There are many products on the market to help prevent mosquito bites and chancing acquiring a deadly infection. Lots of these products contain DEET. It is extremely recommended. DEET can also be applied full strength, but 20-50% is normally powerful enough.

Some of the brand name insect repellents are: Off, Cutter, White Mountain, and Repel. There are also candles, wipes, nets, traps, and foggers obtainable on the market. There are also organic repellents on the market. You can also make your own repellent.

Smoke from campfires and mud or clay assists keep mosquitoes from biting. Some herbs, such as Rosemary, will also keep mosquitoes away.

Who would have thought that the London Underground is home to a unique species of mosquito? The species is called the London Underground mosquito and is considered to have evolved from Culex pipiens. The London Underground species has been dubbed Culex pipiens molestus, because it is a vigorous biter.

It is not new, but it is comparatively new in biological terms. Molestus is known to have bitten Londoners during the Second World War whilst they were taking refuge during the air raids. However, there are other references to a mosquito with the same name, molestus, 170 years before the war, when there was no underground railway system in London or anywhere else in the world.

This mosquito was first discovered in the London Underground, which is why it got its name, but it can be discovered in metro and underground railway stations all over the world. No one really knows a lot concerning this insect species yet.

Some people suggest that it is a variant of a local Culex pipiens that has adapted to living in warmer, subterranean tunnels, whilst others say that is a southern (and therefore warmer) variant of C. pipiens that is able to live in the colder north because it has colonized the warm train tunnels of the underground systems.

Yet others, notably Kate Byrne and Richard Nichols, suggest that it is a totally different species from Culex pipiens. Their proof for saying this is that there are differences between pipiens and molestus: they display very different behavioural patterns and do not mate readily with each other.

C. pipiens molestus will bite rats, mice and humans and dies in cold temperatures but remains active all year round, whereas C. pipiens can tolerate cold weather, only bites birds and hibernates if the weather gets very cold.

On the rare occasions when the two varieties cross breed, the eggs are infertile, which implies that they are distantly related if at all. Recent studies suggest that molestus originated in one source but spread rapidly around the world, perhaps in freight.

Second-hand tyres have been blamed for spreading molestus around the world. There is a colossal international trade in second hand tyres and it is notoriously problematic to get all the water out of a tyre that has been left in the rain. Mosquitoes can breed in a minuscule amount of water, so this is a possibility.

There is a strange and not entirely explained twist to the story of the molestus, the American version of molestus pipiens still bites birds which leads some individuals to say that molestus is a separate species, but that it has formed a hybrid in America with pipiens.

This is fairly frightening, but quite possible, because the American pipiens can transmit human encephalitis caused by the West Nile virus, an eruption of which hit New York in 1999.

There is a lot more to find out concerning the London Underground mosquito, since the story is only just beginning to unfold. The true story will almost certainly come out of America where this new mosquito has proved to be the most dangerous.

Raccoons, they are so cute to watch from the inside of your home. However, when humans come into contact with them in their natural habitat, it is self-evident that they are not an animal one would want for a pet. They are mammals and are known to be nocturnal and omnivorous.

Now, because they are omnivores, they are scavengers too. So they will find a way into your backyard and patio. If a raccoon finds dog or cat food on a garden patio, it will not hesitate to eat it.

When a raccoon knows where to find a free meal, it will come back for more. In fact, a raccoon with bring its family with it to make the most of a free meal. The raccoon is most likely to consume nuts such as walnuts and acorns in its own natural habitat. If, on the other hand, a raccoon wanders into a suburban setting, like the garden of a home, it will eat whatever is on the ground or in a rubbish container.

The raccoon is known for scrambling into, and overturning, waste cans to search for waste food for their next meal. Raccoons were first spotted in a city in Cincinnati in the 1920?s and then were seen in such cities as San Francisco, Chicago and Toronto in the 1950?s.

The raccoon is chiefly to be found in North American states and territories such as Panama, Bahamas, Cuba and Jamaica., but what’s more in Europe too.

Raccoons have a good memory and have been studied by a variety of scientists past and present. With their memory and intelligence, it is no surprise that they can recall where they discovered their last meal and will return to that same region.

If a raccoon knows where to return for a meal, it will, more likely than not, endeavor to get into the home it is stealing food from. If a raccoon is clever enough to know where to go back for a meal, with family in tow, it will find a route to into a home and search out a food supply.

When a raccoon is found in the backyard, or inside a home, it is not wise to try and catch it. The best a homeowner can do is shoo the raccoon, or its family, away and call the animal control in your city. As cute and furry as raccoons look, they are not to be touched or picked up.

A raccoon is a wild animal and will do whatever it takes to protect itself and its family. It is also vital to realize that raccoons carry sickness. A raccoon carries rabies and will pass it on to a pet or human by a bite. The rabies virus is in the raccoon?s saliva.

As the raccoon becomes ?comfortable? visiting the outside of a home, it will attempt to get inside if it sees a way in through a back door or attic window. As stated above, raccoons are intelligent and fantastic natural climbers. They will have no problem climbing up the side of a home, look for an open window into an attic and climb in.

If a raccoon has its ?kits? in tow, they will all find their way into the attic and create not only a lot of noise, but will do their best to get into the home to search for their next meal.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on many of subjects, but is now concerned with distemper in raccoons. If you want to know more, please visit our site at Distemper Vaccines

July 14th, 2011Mosquitoes And Disease

Mosquito is a common insect which belongs to the family Culicidae. The word mosquito is of Spanish or Portuguese origin which means ?little fly?. A mosquito passes through four stages in its life cycle i.e. egg, larva, pupa and adult. The fully developed mosquito is also called an imago. Eggs are laid by adult females in still water like puddles, lakes, ponds, or containers etc.

The life of an grown-up mosquito is four-eight weeks long. The mouthparts of mosquitoes are adapted to pierce the skin of animals and plants. Males feed on nectar and the juices of plants while the females need to feed on blood to obtain nutrients in order to lay eggs. Over 3,500 species of mosquitoes are to be found in the world.

The females of some species feed on humans and are the cause of numerous contagious illnesses. Egg development and blood digestion are two very important events in the life of female mosquitoes. They serve as a vector to transfer viruses and parasites from one person to another.

Mosquito control is necessary for getting rid of harmful mosquitoes and the illnesses spread by them. It is estimated that mosquitoes spread diseases to over 700 million individuals in Asia, Africa, Mexico, Central America and South America. Numerous deaths are the result of contagious illnesses caused by the bites of mosquitoes.

When mosquito control was less common, thousands of deaths were caused each year. Malaria and yellow fever were known to be caused by mosquito bites. WestNile disease is also transmitted by mosquitoes. Dengue disease and Encephalitis are other contagious illnesses brought about by mosquitoes.

Natural predators of mosquitoes include the dragonfly which helps control the number of mosquitoes by eating them. The reaction to the bites of mosquitoes can be immediate or delayed. The irritation on the bites is the result of an immunity response.

A number of anti-itch treatments are available on the market. Some medications are taken orally whilst others are for external use only. Itching can be reduced by applying an adhesive tape to the region of the bite or by sucking on the area through a straw.

A very effective anti-inflammatory agent is Tea tree oil, which lessens itching. Insecticides may also be used to kill the larvae of the mosquito. Source reduction is a very effective way to control mosquitoes by removing still water. Biocontrol is a different remedy by which natural enemies of mosquitoes are used to reduce their population.

Chemical pesticides will kill adult mosquitoes because they are the most harmful from the point of view of spreading disease. DDT was used for the control of mosquitoes on a big scale but now it?s use is banned in some countries. Different sorts of repellents are used to deter mosquitoes from attacking. DEET is used as an good repellent.

Picaridin and IR3535 are also very widely used CDC-recommended repellents. Oil of Eucalyptus is a natural repellent and it is highly recommended. It is very important to take safety precautions to protect yourself from the contagious illnesses borne by mosquitoes.

July 14th, 2011Pet Friendly Rentals

The majority of people really love their pets, to the point where they become part of the family. Some pet owners cannot stand to be parted from their pets for more than a day or so and for these people, going on vacation can be a problem, because they do not want to leave their friends behind. Obviously the answer is to take your cat or dog with you. Dogs are easier to take away than cats, because they are more well-trained

If you are only going for a few days, say on business, finding a hotel near to the location of your meeting should not be too much of a problem, unless you want to stay at one of the big names in the city centre. It is often the smaller, family-run hotels or guest houses that consent to pets, although some want you to keep your dog in a kennel on the premises overnight. larger hotels tend not to be very pet-friendly.

If you intend taking your pet with you, it is better if you make this clear when you make your booking as more hotels do not permit pets than do allow them. Normally there is no extra charge for a pet, but you are liable for any extra cleaning bills, should your pet have an accident.

If you are going away on vacation or for a longer period of time, it is sometimes far easier to find a holiday rental that will allow you to take your cat or dog with you. Again, it is best to make it obvious at booking that you want to take your dog with you. Fortunately, there are about fifty percent of rentals or more that will allow this, although once again, you will be held liable for any damage or mess made by your dog.

A tip: if on getting there, you see that previous pets have caused some damage or stains, take photographs on your first day and have them dated. Modern cameras often have the ability to date stamp photos or you can use a newspaper. Otherwise, point out the damage to your host.

When you travel with your dog, it is best to put the animal in some sort of a cage particularly when driving. A loving dog can be a diversion in a car. If it wants attention just when you are trying to perform a complicated manouevre, it can cause an accident. Some dogs get very frightened in cars and want to sit on their owner’s lap, this is also not a good idea and could lead to a charge of dangerous driving. Additionally, if your dog is not caged and you have an accident, it could be thrown through the windscreen. If you are travelling by air, then the airline will insist on a cage, but they usually have their own.

Once you arrive at your pet-friendly rental, give your dog some of his normal food to eat, lay out his blanket from home, and put out one of his favourite toys, just to help make him feel at home. After all, everything will be strange to him and he might be able to smell the previous furry tenant. If cleaning staff will be entering your rental during your holiday, make sure that you are there at least for the first few times they visit.

July 13th, 2011Insect And Insect Control

Mankind has to live with insects because we could not live without them. Insects are essential for clearing waste both human and natural, but occasionally they are a nuisance and that is when we have to carry out some local, temporary insect control. This is normally when insects make a nuisance of themselves within our personal space.

The most common causes of complaint are mosquitoes in the garden and ants in the house. Enjoying a drink and a chat in the backyard on a warm evening can be miserable if there are mosquitoes making constant attacks and it is a constant worry if you always have to protect yourself and your food from foraging ants.

So, what can you do in the manner of insect control? There are a number of methods of dealing with mosquitoes and it is best not to rely on only one course of action. Occasionally, mosquitoes are only a problem for a few days a year, but if they are a constant problem you have to do more.

The best method of control is prevention. Mosquitoes can breed in half-an-inch of water, so the first job is to eradicate their breeding grounds. Make certain that the drains, do actually drain away and that the gutters are not blocked. Then up-turn anything in the backyard that can hold water: flower pots, buckets, containers and boats etc or cover them over.

If you have a water feature put guppies or goldfish in it, because they like to eat mosquito larvae. This ought to almost solve your difficulty, but a few mosquitoes will still come in from next door, so as dusk approaches, hang one of those fly zappers near where you sit.

They have a black or ultraviolet light within an electrified coil and are very effective. Hang one roughly six or seven feet off the ground. Some devices claim to be able to clear half an acre of airspace.

Finally, on a very local level you can put insect repellent on your skin or / and clothes and have a tennis racquet style insect zapper for the one or two determined mosquitoes.

Ants will come into your home to live occasionally, but usually they have a nest outdoors but they have found a good, regular source of food in your house, so they have added it to their list of places to visit every day.

So, think about your house carefully, is it a bit grubby? Do you often leave food out? Do you do the cleaning up regularly and do you wipe the prep surfaces down often? A small sticky patch of sugary water can feed a host of ants all day, so your kitchen does have to be kept really clean.

If that is not the cause of their visits, you will have to find their nest. That is not a problem, merely follow a line of ants back to their nest which is probably a hole in the ground. Buy one of those poisons which kills by poisoning and by contact. Place some on a bit of tile of glass and leave it outside their nest.

The ants will consume it and die and get it on them and die. They will take it back inside and give it to the others who will die and they will get groomed by their comrades, who will also get it on them and die. This process usually takes a couple of weeks to a few months, but you will see a large drop in ant numbers within a week.

July 12th, 2011Studying Insects

The study of insects is known as entomology. Entomology is a sub-section of biology and is one of the oldest sciences. Man has studied the habits of insects, normally with a view to eradicating them, since the first plague of locusts landed on primitive farmers’ crops tens of thousands of years ago. However, entomology was not really recognized and learned as a science until the Sixteenth Century.

Entomology has had numerous famous devotees but the most famous was Charles Darwin. More recent entomologists are Karl von Frisch the Nobel Prize winner for medicine in 1973 and E. O. Wilson the two time Pulitzer prize winner.

Entomologists are also frequently credited with helping solve murders by studying the insects that are discovered on and in the dead body. This is very possible and not merely a trick used in Hollywood films.

The first thing to realise is that not all creepy crawlies are insects. For example, spiders are not insects, but many entomologists are not so strict and have an interest in arachnids (spiders), worms, slugs and snails.

All insects pass through several stages of life, but there are two sorts of insect development ‘simple metamorphosis’ and ‘complete metamorphosis’.

The first sort includes most beetles and bugs like bed bugs. They are born as eggs and hatch into larvae (nymphs), which, whilst not perfect copies of their parents do look a bit like them

The second sort are also born as eggs, also hatch into larvae, but they look nothing like their parents – so dissimilar in fact that if you do not know what they are, you could not imagine. The larva then grows into a pupa when it appears to become dormant, this is not the case though, there is plenty going on and when it comes out from the pupal stage it is unrecognizable. Butterflies are like this.

If you want to study insects, you have to focus because there are at least 1.3 million species of insects that we have discovered so far and there are plenty more to name and classify.

You would be forgiven for thinking that these unknown insects, worms, slugs and beetles et cetera are all in remotest Africa or in deep jungles, but last year a carnivorous slug was discovered in a backyard in the centre of Cardiff in the UK.

In order to study insects, you usually have to catch them without killing them. This means nets and traps. it is simple enough to get a butterfly net (or fishing net) and you can create your own pitfall traps for ground beetles. You will also need a good book to help you classify your find and a magnifying glass to be able to better see it.

One word of caution though: you may think that there are too many insects and that no one really cares about them, but this is not true. There are many insects in every country that are protected and you will be breaking the law by capturing them or hurting them, so the first thing to do is find out which ones you may study and which ones it is better to leave alone.

Whilst you are putting your bathing suit on and heading for the water, the grass or the sand, have you ever given a thought to those generations who came before you? While you are sitting there in your swimming trunks or bikini, spare a thought for those who have worn a swimsuit before you through the ages. The history of the swimsuit and the history of women’s swimwear in particular is fascinating

We are so fortunate nowadays in the Developed world to be free of the shackles of the disapproval of society concerning beachwear and swimming costumes, because it still goes on in the Muslim and Asian world. They see our easy approach to near nudity as disgraceful, but so did our fore-fathers and particularly our fore-mothers.

But there was a bizarre duality in their opinion. I have seen photos of female bathers in the latest fashion designs taken around about 1900 where nipples are plainly visible, but the legs were covered in stockings. These are obviously family photos and not pornography, which was rife then as well.

The history of swimming suits through the ages (in the Developed world) for both men and women has seen a reduction in the amount of clothing society needed to see for a person to remain decent. This varied from country to country and from religion to religion, but with the exception of the Islamic faith, the trend has been the same – towards less.

The less the better.

For example, in 1905 a lady’s bathing costume was actually a short dress made up of ten yards of material, but by 1945 that yardage had shrunk to one yard. Nowadays some women’s swimwear is made from a couple of square feet.

The same is a fact of men’s swimwear fashion. A hundred years ago, the predominant swimwear fashion for men dictated that they wore leotards in the water, whereas fashionable swimwear in the late 1930′s was trunks.

In the Seventies, they wore scanty speedos and now we are back to trunks, although some beaches permit men to wear thongs like ladies do. Such are the vagaries of contemporary beachwear and swimwear style as dictated by politics and fashion.

In 1917, women wore a knitted sweater, a skirt, bloomers, black stockings and even shoes on the water’s edge. Men did not have to wear stockings or shoes, but their leotard usually came down to their knees.

The following years saw hemlines on women and men rising, but swimming costumes were still down-beat, unsexy dark colours. The emphasis was not to look sexy, although numerous photos taken at that time show that both sexes were going through a sexual revolution. They had never seen so much of each other outside the bedroom.

This was the time when lots of our grandparents were born so it is the history of their parents’ sexual liberation. In the Developed world, we can scarcely begin to imagine what it must have been like in those days ‘when a glimpse of stocking was something shocking’ and men ‘would rather hang around Piccadilly Underground, looking at the ankles of the fine-born ladies’.

These days, you can find beaches all around Europe where (semi) nudity is permissible, and increasingly so in America and Asia. The only bastions of modesty are the Muslim countries of northern Africa and Eastern Asia, but after recent events such as the Arab Awakening, how long is that likely to last?

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on a number of subjects, but is now concerned with strapless swimming costumes. If you want to know more, please visit our website at Swimwear For Big Busts.

Everyone ought to know fundamental First Aid techniques, but it is especially important for those who participate in potentially more dangerous sports or activities such as hunting. There are all types of things that can happen to you while hunting.

Besides getting shot, you could cut yourself while skinning an animal, you could be attacked by an animal, you could fall and break a leg or you could suffer a routine heart attack that could have happened anywhere.

However, what makes all these accidents more dangerous when you are hunting is the likelihood that you will be located miles from anywhere whilst it occurs. There is no one to turn to except your companion. No ambulances, no doctors and no hospitals for tens of miles.

The first thing that everyone ought to know is CPR, which stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which is an emergency procedure consisting of external cardiac massage and artificial respiration. It is vital to know CPR techniques for everyone not merely hunters.

You can learn CPR at several local institutions including the hospital, the fire station, some schools, some scouting organizations and some other institutions like the Boys’ Brigade or the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade.

These institutions can usually teach you over CPR if you want, such as what to do in a crisis. There are certain procedures that are common to most if not all crisis situations. For example, the first rule is to always take care of yourself first. Then assess the situation and make the area safe for yourself and anyone who may come into it.

This might sound selfish, but you are no help to anyone if you permit yourself to become injured and the rescue services will be very cautious if the area is unsafe when they get there. Then either begin first aid procedures or call the rescue services depending on the situation.

Healthcare staff teach the ABC method of applying First Aid. ABC stands for ‘Airway, Breathing and Circulation’. So, first look in the mouth and at the throat. Look for and remove any blockages such as blood, dentures or foreign bodies.

Then check for breathing. If the patient has ceased breathing, endeavour to resuscitate him or her because the brain cannot survive longer than a couple of minutes without oxygen.

Next check the heart beat. If it has stopped endeavour to get it going again. If there is copious bleeding from a wound, try to staunch the bleeding by applying pressure to it through a clean cloth. Get help if there are a number of wounds but apply tourniquets to arms and legs that are bleeding badly. You can use a belt or stockings as make-shift tourniquets.

If the patient has experienced a serious fall, the first rule is not to move the person. You can cause serious injury to someone with broken bones by moving them. You can even cause paralysis, so if someone has fallen, enquire whether they can move their fingers and toes (a sign that the spine is probably undamaged) and then phone the rescue services.

Two of the best safety rules while going hunting, are to tell someone where you are going and never to go alone. If you hunt with the same person regularly, why not both go to a First Aid course together?

What do people give for Christmas and are those presents any different from thirty or forty years ago? Of course, there are games around now that did not even exist thirty or forty years ago. In this article, I would like to take a look at some of the most well-liked Christmas gifts of all time. They are not in any particular order, just as they occur to me

Number 1: the number one desirable Christmas gift for sons and fathers for almost a hundred years is the train set. There have been toy train sets for more than a hundred years, but they were rather too expensive for working class families until about the 1950′s. There are still more boys and fathers wanting train sets than mothers and daughters. A decent train set will last decades and rise in value.

Number 2: a rocking horse. All children like rocking horses. Boys and girls; girls seem to retain their fascination with horses longer than boys do, in Europe anyway. This gift has staying power lasting for a number of years even if it is used by many siblings. A good rocking horse can be passed down generations.

Number 3: doll’s houses and toy forts. All children like to play with either a dolls’ house and dolls or a fort and soldiers. A Wendy House and a tree house are in this bracket as well. You can see children all over the world building make-believe houses and copying their parents’ life.

Number 4: dolls; both sexes like to play with dolls of one form or another: teddy bears, rag dolls, action men, Barbie and Ken and toy soldiers are all dolls

Number 5: a doll’s pram is still a firm favourite with young girls – imitating mum transporting her baby about. Similarly toy pedal cars, which are well-liked with young boys and young girls alike.

Number 6: bikes and tricycles are also well-liked with boys and girls of all ages. We seem to all have an early desire to travel at a speed faster than walking pace.

Number 7: board games have been popular for thousands of years. Roman soldiers used to play a game similar to ludo and chess has been around for roughly as long as that as well. Nowadays, there are hundreds of other board games as well, some of which have become classics already. Some of the board games that have been popular since they were invented are: Monopoly, Scrabble, Cluedo and Risk and there are many more besides that too.

Number 8: cards. The original games of cards were nearly all gambling games or could be gambled on, but for decades there have been children’s decks of cards meant to make some children’s card games like Snap and Happy Families more simple and more fun.

Number 9: shoot-’em-ups. Boys have always liked shooting. First cork guns or toy bows and arrows or toy crossbows; then air guns, then paint ball and then real guns.

Number 10: costumes; Children like to dress up, whether girls dress in mum’s clothing and boys dress as Batman; girls dress as nurses or boys dress as Superman, all kids dress up at some time or other in their lives.

To this list of more conventional toys, you can add the modern number ones like computers and gaming machines, but then they have been about for thirty or forty years already as well.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on several topics, but is now concerned with Silver Cross Rocking Horses. If you want to know more, please visit our website at Rocking Horses for sale.

In the late summer of 1999, there was an epidemic of encephalitis and meningitis in New York. To begin with, all the sufferers came from an eight square kilometer area centered on Queens and the Bronx.

Later, it spread further, although there were merely 59 cases and seven deaths – all in older individuals. 677 individuals were tested in the original survey, 19 of which tested positive for meningoencephalitis.

Going by the size of the population of New York, it was estimated that between 3,500 and 13,000 people (average: 8,200) had contracted West Nile virus. There were almost certainly a lot more than that, but serious indications usually only show in the young and the old.

Those in the in-between age group probably reckoned that they had a bad cold, which means that fewer than one percent of sufferers displayed severe neurological symptoms.

At first, it was wondered whether this outbreak could be the result of an act of terrorism, but others suspected mosquitoes. Investigation concentrated on St. Louis encephalitis. However, when it was thought to check for West Nile virus, the number of cases increased.

The reason for the outbreak was soon confirmed to be a West Nile-like virus based on the identification of viral infection in human, avian, and mosquito samples.

This had not been considered because the New York epidemic was the first time that West Nile virus had been seen in the West.

Then recent bird deaths were remembered. Substantial numbers of wild birds, especially crows, had passed away recently in the area and there were deaths at the Bronx Zoo of exotic birds too.

Examination of the corpses of these birds showed traces of encephalitis which resembled West Nile virus (WNV). When doctors knew what to look for, they discovered comparable traits in the brains of the dead humans

The authorities instantly initiated widespread measures to reduce the population of Culex pipiens, the mosquito in the region that specializes in attacking birds. The public was informed and helplines were set up – by the end of September more than 150,000 calls had been made.

The local authorities continued to spray and handed out 300,000 aerosols of DEET and 750,000 public health leaflets, which recommended cleaning up the backyard, not going out at dusk or dawn and covering up bare skin.

WNV is an arbovirus (arthropod-borne virus), which means that it is conveyed to humans by arthropods (insects), normally the tick or the mosquito. Previously, WNV had just been seen in Uganda, where it was first discovered and in isolated cases in Europe and South Africa.

A report concluded that it was “unclear whether the virus that caused this outbreak is a previously identified strain of WNV or a new variant”, however now recent proof appears to suggest that a new mosquito – a hybrid of C. pipiens – living in the New York metro was to blame.

This is still not definite, but if it is the case, then the whole world ought to take care, because the New York ‘hybrid’ is related to the London Underground mosquito which inhabits nearly every underground railway station on the planet.

July 10th, 2011Swimming Pool Safety

If you have a swimming pool, you have to be aware of the safety aspects regarding that pool. There is no counter-argument, that is one of the legal responsibilities of an owner of a swimming pool . You are going to get people coming around who cannot swim; guests who have eaten or drunken too much and should not swim; children and skinny-dipping teenage intruders and you have to supply a safe environment in which to swim for all or them or decline access.

The first area of swimming pool safety to tackle is the denial of access and the easiest way of doing this is the assembly of a security fence. It will deny access to passing children, interlopers and friends who came around to see you on the off-chance when you were not in.

There are thousands of drownings by misadventure in backyard swimming pools every year – most of them are children and drunks, who would still be alive today, if the pool had been locked up.

If you have your own children who cannot swim, get them taught as soon as you can and drill some safety routines into them. For example, they must never get in the pool without an adult supervising them and they must always wear flotation devices, which means that you should always have flotation devices on hand.

You will require waist rings, arm bands and life jackets. Those for use in a swimming pool by children are not costly and can be inflatable. It is also a good idea to have some pieces of styrofoam floating about just in case someone gets tired unexpectedly.

Make sure that there is always a capable swimmer on hand who knows basic First Aid, especially artificial respiration with particular reference to drowning. In fact, why not take the whole family down to the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade and all get your life-savers certificate? The least you should have is a proper life belt – ocean-going – on a rope that is long enough to reach anywhere in your pool and tie off the loose end.

It might be possible to get away with not having a security fence, if you use an above ground swimming pool, but you will have to check with the local authorities on that one. You will also have to take away the access ladders when it is not in use. Forgetting to do so could equate to criminal negligence if anyone were to drown in your pool.

Swimming pool safety is primarily about saving lives but it is also about the peace of mind of the owner of the swimming pool. If someone were to drown in your pool and you knew that you had not done everything within your power to prevent it, you would almost certainly carry that burden of guilt with you for the rest of your life, especially if it was a child and even more so if it was your child or the child of one of your guests.

The Olympic Games are a sporting occasion played every two years at international level. A number of competitions are arranged where thousands of athletes from around the globe take part. The history of this immense sporting competition dates back to the 5th Century AD.

The Olympic Movement classified the Olympic Games into the Winter Olympic Games, the Summer Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games and the Youth Olympic Games during the 20th and 21st Century.

The Paralympic Games are organized for after the Olympic Games and these are for disabled athletes. The Youth Olympic Games are for teenagers and were first held in 2010. The Olympic Charter defines the structure of the International Olympic Committee i.e. the governing body of the Olympic Games.

The Olympic flag carries five interlocking circles of red, blue, yellow, green and black and was introduced in 1920. The Olympic motto says ?Swifter, Higher, and Stronger?.

Some of the sports events held in the Summer Olympics are baseball, badminton, basketball, cycling, boxing, diving, soccer, sailing, rowing, hockey, water polo, wrestling, swimming, weightlifting, tennis etc.

Games played during the Winter Olympics are skiing, ice hockey, skating, ski jumping, curling, free style skiing, cross country skiing, down hill skiing,

A gold medal is presented to every first winner while silver and bronze medals are presented to the second and third winners respectively. Victory Diplomas are the certificates which are given to some top winners of every sport. The Olympic Flame is lit according to a custom associated with these games.

A new flame is lit for each Olympics in the Ancient Olympic Stadium in Olympia, Greece. This flame is taken to the host country where the games are to be held.

The flame is carried over the whole host country by individuals walking, running, scuba diving, riding, and using other types of transport. Actually, a number of torches are carried around the country where the games are held.

The sizeable Olympic torch is lit by the last runner carrying the torch. This substantial torch keeps burning throughout the games. The flame is put out at the end of the games during the closing ceremony. A new torch is designed for every Olympics.

Just about all the nations of the world are represented at these games. National and international media coverage provides a opportunity to unknown athletes to be famous. The host city and country gets a chance to showcase their country to the world.

The host country organizes and funds the whole event. Over 13,000 athletes compete in the Summer and Winter Olympics in more than 400 activities.

Many challenges are faced when organizing this mega event. Some of the major challenges are terrorism, bribery of officials, boycotts and doping. The host city is usually chosen seven years ahead of the Olympic Games.

The United States has had the chance to host four Summer and four Winter Olympics. No other nation has hosted so many Olympic games.

The next Summer Olympics are scheduled to be held in London in 2012. Women are being particularly promoted to participate in these games. Female athletes will be able to take part in all the men?s sports in the coming Olympics for the first time. Women?s boxing has also been introduced thereby ending gender discrimination.

Are you thinking of going on a cruise this year? If you have never been on a cruise before you certainly ought to try one and if you have been on a cruise before you could try cruising the Mediterranean this time

Cruising at sea, calling into a different port each day or two soon becomes a way of life, so short cruises can be a little exasperating. A fortnight is all right but a month is much better.

Imagine it, a different language and a different culture each day for weeks! The Mediterranean Sea is not thought of as a substantial sea, but it has to be the most diverse region in the world, because there are countries like Portugal, Spain and France to the northwest; the Middle East is represented by Turkey and The Lebanon in the northeast; Arabic countries like Egypt and Lybia line the northeastern coast of the African Mediterranean and Arabic/Berber countries like Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco bring us back to within miles of Spain on the northwestern African Mediterranean litoral.

In fact, the Mediterranean Sea covers about 2.5 million square kilometres and has more than 120 substantial seaports around it. The variety of food, culture and language is quite extraordinary. If you are looking for variety, you will certainly find it while cruising the Mediterranean Sea.

If you get a kick out of history, then you will not be disappointed by the ruins from the great Greek, Roman and Egyptian empires that spread around the area prolifically. I do not think that there is a single region without something to remind the population about the power of the Roman army 2,000 years ago.

There are dozens of different Mediterranean cruises available lots of them specializing in one particular aspect or area of the Mediterranean. Some go for romantic destinations others specialize in Greek, Roman or Egyptian history.

The last Mediterranean cruise I went on was actually two cruises back-to-back. I flew into Barcelona from my home town. I did not have to take care of my baggage from my hometown until I saw it on my bunk on the cruise liner. That was a great touch. On the first leg of the cruise we steamed east to Sicily and then north along the Italian coastline to the French Riviera and back to Spain.

The second leg went east to Sardinia and then south to Africa and returned along the coast calling into Tunisia and Malta on the way back to Spain. They were two completely different cruises on the same ship and separated merely by a week from one another.

The luxury and the dining experience was wonderful and I discovered the saying to be true that you can expect to gain about a pound in weight every two days unless you take plenty of exercise, so make sure you pack your swimming costume, even if you do choose to leave your exercise kit at home.

You would probably be surprised to know that hybrid cars have been with us since the very earliest days of automotive history, but you will not be astonished to be told that the technology has come on in leaps and bounds for the last ten years. In fact, the technology in hybrid cars has reached the degree where fuel consumption in a hybrid can be half that of in a conventional internal combustion engine only car.

Half or even less than half under sure circumstances like driving in town, especially in busy traffic. In fact, when a hybrid is either cruising on electric or stopping and starting in heavy traffic, there will be no use of petrol or diesel whatsoever, which means that you are driving ‘without cost’.

I put without cost in parentheses because a hybrid vehicle is still substantially dearer than a car with a traditional engine. However, even given the added cost of a hybrid vehicle, you can save that excess price over the average life time of the vehicle because of the saving on fuel. Of course, the higher the price of fuel, the sooner you will recover your extra initial outlay on the cost of the hybrid.

Maybe you are thinking that hybrid vehicle manufacturers are profiteering on the backs of car drivers who want to do their bit for the environment. Well, you would not be alone in thinking that, but the cost of developing hybrid technology was and still is costly and someone has to pay for it.

That means you and me, the end-users. Well, that is standard, yet in some countries, the government has stepped in to subsidize individuals who buy a hybrid vehicle, because governments all around the world are under an obligation to reduce their country’s carbon footprint.

That means that now is as good a time as any to purchase a hybrid vehicle.

There are other reasons why a hybrid is costly though. The hybrid actually has two engines. A hybrid has a traditional engine run on traditional fuels, and it also has an electric engine which runs off costly batteries. It is not that you have to replace the batteries as with a radio. The batteries are costly because they are very heavy duty rechargeable units.

The technology for recharging these batteries is also ground-breaking. The car makes use of traditional alternators to recharge them but it also uses braking power to recharge them as well. Not just that but the car’s on board computer switches between the two motors automatically, depending on the amount of power that is required by the driver.

Keep an eye on the hybrid car market because prices are declining and coupled with subsidies, the time to buy a hybrid car may come sooner than you think.

I live in a nation where fathers are proud that their children can ride a motorcycle at eight years of age. When the beaming parent boasts about this, I always ask of the cost of insuring such a young driver but the Thai answer is to smile. Their children are not insured but if they get into an accident, they simply hope that it will not be a bad one.

However, we all know that lots of motorcycle accidents are serious and that most of those concerned in motorcycle accidents are young people. Why would someone, a parent even, allow a child to ride a motorcycle without insurance? It is beyond me, but then, I am not a parent. I just think that it is irresponsible.

So, the first thing that a motorcyclist should do is take a course – a motorcyclists’ safety course, yet even that will not be useful to someone who does not have or cannot buy insurance. However, it is a very responsible thing to do to undertake a motorcyclists’ safety course, because you will be taught how to dress in safe clothing and how to steer clear of perilous situations.

The first thing to find out concerning a motorcyclists’ safety course is what it will teach you and whether you will be given a certificate for completing it. It is also helpful to know whether having such a certificate will entitle you to a discount on your insurance premium. It could well do, which will more than compensate the price of the course during your lifetime – hopefully.

A good motorcyclists’ safety course ought to teach about the components of a motorcycle, what you can reasonably expect from them and why. It would also teach you basic motorcycle maintenance and repair. After that, it ought to teach you driving skills and how to sidestep accidents.

Wearing the correct safety clothing at all times is another requirement of a good motorcyclists’ safety course. You have to realize why doing something or wearing something is important. And in essence, it is important because it can save your life and avert accidents, which can save other peoples’ lives as well.

It is mostly teenagers who ride motorcycles and teenagers are not well-known for acting sensibly, so as a parent or a responsible teenager make sure you find out about motorcyclists’ safety course in your neighborhood.

The Net is the obvious location to start looking for a motorcyclists’ safety course, but if you are all at sea, then the local authorities, the local police station or the local accident prevention bureau will be able to put you on the right track and so may the local library.

You know that it makes sense so only do it, if not to keep your own child out of danger, then so that he or she does run me down whilst I am out strolling with my wife and my dog.

July 8th, 2011Ideas For Baby Showers

Baby showers are well-liked events, particularly in America. A baby shower is usually given or hosted by a friend of the expectant mother, mostly before the birth but occasionally after it as well. The point of the baby shower is to collect presents for the child and its parents, which is why family of the mother find it awkward to organize the baby shower themselves – it seems too much like begging.

If you can get a friend to arrange a baby shower for you or if someone offers to do it, the invitations should be sent out a month or two before the birth day, so that the mother is not in too much uneasiness and is not likely to drop the baby during the party.

It is nice to have handmade baby shower invitations. There are two ways that you can do this: either design the invitation card yourself and have it printed out or choose a template at the printers. Both ideas give satisfactory results.

If you have the invitations printed to a standard size, you can buy cheap envelopes at a budget stationery office, but if you go for some weird size, ask the printer to provide the envelopes too.

Standard details like the date, the time, the venue, your name and the baby’s name can all be printed but you will have to write or type the recipient’s name in personally. Add your phone number too so that people can ask questions if they have any. If you would like the party (and the presents) to have a theme, you ought to state that on the invitation. Perhaps the card could be in the same theme as well.

In fact, if you would like to go down that path, you could download a fitting image off the Net, say, a scene from Peter Rabbit, and give that to the printer so that they can print that onto your card.

People are very busy these days, so make certain you give your friends at least a month to book you in and get a fitting present for the shower. If you would like to be fairly certain how many people are coming, enclose a stamped, self-addressed postcard in with the invitation, so that they can let you know easily.

If you are looking for items to do during the party, you could get people to suggest names for your baby and guess the sex or weight of it as well. You could use a cross on a chain as a pendant to see if it the movement predicts a boy or girl and how many individuals get the same movement. You could also discuss themes for the child’s nursery after it is born, one for if it is a boy and one for if it is a boy.

July 7th, 2011Free Woodworking Plans

If you are going to make a piece of furniture, especially if it is fairly complicated or you have never made anything like it before, it is a good idea to get a set of wood working plans. These furniture plans are not dear and free woodworking plans can be acquired as well.

However, it is prudent to be suspicious of free wood working plans as they may not be precise and you will have little recourse to protest if they were free or even pirated. Free wood working plans may be all right, but you do not want to find out that they are not half way through the task.

A good set of wood working plans, free or not, will give a clear exploded view of the object to be made and a narrative explaining the different steps and procedures. The plans may also make suggestions about the timber and tools to use, the length of time it could take to make in man hours and the difficulty level.

If you want a large collection of wood working plans, there are CD’s around which have 14,000 on them for $30-40. They are a good bargain. Other places you could search are online forums, the library and craft or DIY shops. Shops are probably the dearest option.

Once you have chosen an item to make, you should think about which style you would like. A kitchen cupboard could be hardwood or softwood. It could be a Welsh dresser or a Scandinavian design. It could be contemporary, traditional, Georgian or Victorian, to suggest but a few.

Once you have answered these questions you can go looking for your wood working plans. You might be lucky or you may have to compromise if you cannot get just what you want. This is why I think that it is better to buy a CD of plans that have been sorted into a database, so that you can easily find out what is to be had in your collection.

You could search for ‘kitchen cupboard’ and 100 woodworking plans might recommend themselves to you. Or you could type in ‘Victorian Welsh Dresser’ and only get two suggestions. The point is that you will not be wasting your time chasing a pipe dream, when there are no plans available for the exact item you are looking for.

When you have a set of appropriate plans, I think that it is better to get them blown up, or maybe that is just because of my eyesight. However, it is a pain to have to remove your safety goggles to put on your spectacles every time you want to check a size. This is effortless from a CD because the majority of printers have a facility to print poster size. If yours does not, take the CD to a printer’s, an architect’s or a technical office. They will be able to print A1 straight from the CC.

Then you can attach this enlarged wood working plan to the wall or an easel and you are all set to start making your furniture in style.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with a favourite subject, wood furniture plans. If you are interested in Desk Woodworking Plans, please click through to our site, where you will find 14,000 wood working plans.

It is compulsory in most Western countries for employers to provide safety glasses or safety goggles and it is obligatory for employees to wear them when instructed to. It has been established that wearing safety glasses at work significantly reduces the number of accidents and accidents are costly.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reported that eye injuries cost US firms about $467 million each and every year, so a few dozen pairs of safety glasses would definitely recoup their price. However, it is also important to use safety glasses that were designed to protect the eyes of wearers in specific professions.

One of the worries with safety glasses is that they fog up. This means that employees often have to take off their glasses to de-mist them, which lessens the efficiency of the glasses. Stopping fogging or misting is a major problem for makers of safety glasses.

The reason for of fogging is a lack of air flow. This is normally only a difficulty with goggles, because they tend to have a tighter fit so they become warmer, which vaporizes any moisture created by the eyes or by perspiration. It can also be caused by a low background temperature.

Consequently the first step towards solving the problem of fogging or misting in safety glasses is to find out where and why it happens. Fogging will generally occur when the worker moves from a hot region to a cold one, in hot humid zones or where the employee’s body temperature is higher than the ambient temperature.

The first approach ought to be to opt for lenses that will deal with those environments or conditions. Lenses can be coated with anti-fogging or anti-misting coatings. These coatings are applied at the time of manufacture and ought to last the lifetime of the safety glasses.

These coatings will prevent the build up of water droplets on the lenses permitting clear vision. There are other coatings that can be applied too, so it is a question of seeing what types of coatings are obtainable from your supplier.

It is worth bearing in mind that not all anti-fog coatings are effectual under all the conditions where fogging can occur, so you should be precise when explaining to your supplier why you need anti-fog lenses.

If someone has to enter an area where fogging often occurs, supplying an anti-fog fabric to wipe over their lenses is a short term fix. These cloths are safe to use on most lenses, so it is wise to enquire. The effects ought to continue for a number of hours.

If personnel move from one zone to another and have to change their safety glasses from zone to zone, they should be shown how to recognize safety glasses with the special coatings. Lenses that have been treated at the factory with an anti fog coating are often stamped with the letters ‘AF’.

It is worth learning how to deal with fogged safety glasses, because it can save a great deal of frustration, misery and money, if you simply spend a little time procuring the correct safety equipment.

It is lovely to just get away from it all with your partner. Even if you have kids and you love them dearly, it is still nice to get away and be alone together again. It is so easily done to grow apart a little when a couple has careers and children and other responsibilities.

It is at times like these that you ought to start studying summer vacation destinations. Unless you fancy skiing, of course, which some people do obviously. However, the great majority of people like to go to some warm or warm and beautiful. Somewhere romantic.

When you start thinking about your ideal romantic summer vacation destinations, you should first sit down together and discuss what you would both like to do on your vacation as the outcome will or can really affect your choice of destination.

You also have to consider how much privacy you would like and how much noise you can endure. Do you want to mix with young, boisterous people or older, usually quieter types?

If you are looking for sea, sand and sun, then the Bahamas ought to be on your list. There is a lot to do all day in the Bahamas or you can spend all day doing nothing. The night life is good too.

The Bahamas has been developed into a paradise for pleasure seekers and the prices can be high, but it is a vacation that you will never forget. Look out for dedicated resorts or hotels that cater to your interests – many are themed.

The Virgin Islands are very romantic as well and the US Virgin Islands are exceptionally easy for US citizens to get into since they use US dollars and US passports. Nothing could be simpler, you can even take your dog there. There are three main islands, each with its own idiosyncratic flavour.

St. Croix is probably the least populated and the most romantic, but you can read up on that on the Internet. On the islands, which are not far apart, you will be able to discover any type of vacation you like.

The Pocono Mountains, in Pennsylvania is another very popular resort because of the wide range of things that you can discover to do there. The Poconos are famous for all year round amenities. You can ski several different ways in winter and swim in the lakes in the summer.

The Fall is a special time of the year in the Poconos, world-renowned for the colours in the woods and the forests. It can be a very serene place to be, if that is what you are looking for, but it is also home to NASCAR motorsports, if you want some action.

These are just a couple of ideas, of course, there are so many to choose from without even touching on leaving the USA. Europe is fantastic and you are not likely to bump into any friends from back home over there. Try London or Paris in the summer or Spain, Italy or Greece in the winter.

There is no question that Formula One racing is a gripping motor sport for those interested in cars, speed, engineering and design. The design of these Formula One cars is crucial to the speed that the car will travel at, but it is also imperative for the safety of the driver.

For this latter reason, there are strict design rules applying to all cars in this motor sport and any car that does not abide by the rules is disqualified from taking part in the races. It is rare for car designers to infringe these rules because the cost of driving in a race and the benefits from doing well are massive.

Having said that, Formula One car racing teams push the design features of their cars up to the limit. The key to gaining maximum speed with maximum fuel efficiency is having as aerodynamic a design as possible. These cars are as well designed as any fighter jet, but the foremost difference is that fighter jets are intended to leave the ground whereas cars are not.

Therefore, another vital part of the design is creating down force to keep the tyres firmly on the ground. It is important for a number of reasons for the tyres to have a decent grip on the track. Without this grip or traction, the car cannot accelerate, but without it they cannot stop either. Therefore down force and tyres are a major factor in speed and safety.

The brakes are extraordinary as well as you can imagine. They are basically the same as those used in stock road cars, yet the components are rather extraordinary. because they have to work and remain working at high speeds, this means that they develop high temperatures.

Regular metal would buckle or even melt, so high quality carbon fibre composite disk brakes are utilized instead in conjunction with brake pads of special composites which are often extremely secret. There are a great deal of jealously guarded secrets in the designs of contemporary Formula One racing cars.

The foremost part of a racing car is the monocoque, which is the section that holds the engine and the driver. The car’s suspension is also mounted on the monocoque so it is clear that it has to be very strong. This strength is normally gained by making it from carbon fibre. There are also many safety features built into the monocoque for the benefit of the driver.

The engine has to be light-weight, efficient yet powerful, which is a very tall order indeed. There is now also an FIA ruling that the engine has to last for more than one race weekend. Engine failure is the main cause of pulling out of a Formula One race early. The gearbox suffers equally in a fast race. Another rule states that all gearboxes have to be manual – no automatic gearboxes. This adds to the wear and tear.

The suspension is manually adaptable so that it can be fine-tuned to every race track and the conditions prevailing on a race track at any given time. The suspension is not there for the comfort of the driver but to increase the likelihood of the car winning.

July 6th, 2011What Of Formula One?

Formula One, also known as Formula 1 or F1, and officially referred to as the FIA Formula One World is the highest class of single seater auto racing authorized by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).

The “formula” in the name refers to a set of regulations with which all participants’ cars must comply. It is almost certainly the most widely watched televised spectator sport in the world after football.

Formula One can be seen live or tape delayed in almost every country and territory around the world and attracts one of the largest global TV audiences. The 2008 season attracted a global audience of 600 million people per race.

It is a massive television event; the cumulative TV audience was calculated to be 54 billion for the 2001 season, broadcast to two hundred countries.

This is a long way indeed from its early beginnings. The very first Formula One World Championship Motor race took place at Silverstone in the United Kingdom in 1950 . In those early days, teams who no longer compete on the modern F1 circuit dominated events with the very first World Championship being won by Italian Giuseppe Farina in an Alfa Romeo.

His team mate, the legendary Juan Fangio, won the title almost continuously until 1957 and, in fact, his record of five World Championship wins held until 2003 when Michael Schumacher won his sixth title.

It was during this period that probably the greatest driver never to win the World Championship was competing – the U.K.?s Stirling Moss.

One team that did contend in those early years was Ferrari, or Scuderia Ferrari to give the team its full title, whose prancing horse logo is followed by the red shirted fans or ?tifosi? across the world. In fact, during the last few years the sport has been dominated by Ferrari who until recently has been one of the few teams to assemble the complete car, engine and all.

However the U.K. team of Maclaren, using engines from Mercedes Benz, have proved extremely successful. Another very successful team during the 2010 season proved to be Red Bull racing using engines provided by Renault.

It is interesting to note that in the cases of both Maclaren and Red Bull, they have proved much more successful than the teams fielded by their engine suppliers, Mercedes and Renault. This almost certainly goes a long way to sustaining the argument that it is the aerodynamic characteristics of the car that win races.

After several years in which we have seen the number of teams has stayed quite static or even declined, 2010 saw a renaissance in the number of cars on the grid with new entries from Lotus, Virgin Racing, and Hispania Racing bringing the number of starters to 24.

The calendar of races is also in a constant state of change with Korea joining for the 2010 season and India being added in 2011 as Formula 1 becomes more and more a world- wide spectacle as it moves away from its time-honoured European heartland.

But wherever the teams race and whatever the number of cars on the starting grid it will continue to set the pulses racing as those 5 red lights go out!

Throughout history, ladies who quilted have shared patterns, designs, suggestions and experience to others within their group. It was a way for women to get together in a social group without risking being accused of wasting time. Not merely did they use their ‘social time’ to make items, quilts, which could be used or sold, but they manufactured them out of scrap material: small off-cuts of cloth which other people may call rags.

Women still do this today, especially in the mid-west. If you want to get into quilting, you could do a lot worse than join a quilting club or group. Look in your local yellow pages or ask at a crafts shop.

If you have no supply of free quilting patterns from a local club, try the Net. If you use the search term ‘free quilting patterns’ in Google or Yahoo, you will see hundreds of alternatives. Some will be very suitable and others will be useless and you will have to dig down to work out which are which.

If you want to get into some form of motor sport, but are absolutely appalled by the costs concerned, perhaps you have overlooked Go Kart Racing. OK, nothing is cheap anymore, but go karting is relatively cheap compared to its far dearer cousins like Formula One, Formula Drifting, NASCAR and Cross Country Rallying. You can get into go kart racing as a spectator, as an investor in a team or as part of an active team as a mechanic or driver.

Or you could use go kart racing as a spring board into the dearer types of motor sport. You can learn a lot about driving, designing and making cars by starting with go karts. After all, the principals are basically the same, but the parts in karts are a lot cheaper.

In the remainder of this article, we will take a look at some of the components and safety aspects of go karts along with rough typical prices.

The first thing you will need to investigate is the type of kart you want. There are different degrees as there are in other motor sports. as a beginner, you actually ought to begin with the low powered karts, because you will need to learn a lot of new driving skills and quite a few safety regulations before you move on to more highly-rated karts.

If you find the cost of a new kart a little high or if you want to leap-frog past the lower stages of karting as quickly as you can, you could think about buying a second hand kart for the first couple of stages, just buying a new one once you reach the stage of karting that you want to be at. However, do not make the mistake of trying to run before you can walk.

Entry level go karts are not costly. For instance, at the time of writing, a battery operated go kart costs about $300-$400+ while a petrol powered kart will cost $600-$700+

Although go karts have a very low centre of gravity and do not tip over easily, it can happen and collisions do occur so wearing the correct safety attire is essential. Again, you could purchase a second hand set of racing safety clothes, which are basically the same as for motorbiking, if you just want to get going on the cheap.

You will require a jacket and trousers or a one-piece jump suit; a helmet, gloves, a neck-collar and boots. This little lot could set you back anywhere between $300 and $400, but it will save broken bones or worse, particularly in the period a couple of months after you begin when you think that you know it all. Accidents occur once people are over confident.

You will also need a couple of common spare parts, a spare tyre, fuel and oil, say $250 and you are ready to take your first lessons in your own go kart. Or maybe you would rather learn in someone else’s kart first? This is not a bad thought, because it will give you some experience with different types of karts, which will help you choose which one you want (or can afford).

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a number of topics, but is now concerned with how to compare tyre prices. If you would like to know more, please go to our web site at Car Tyres For Sale.

The very first recorded mention of tennis was in the fourteenth Cycle of plays known as ‘The Second Shepherds? Play’ from the Wakefield Yorkshire writer known simply as The Wakefield Master. In scene VIII Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur?s round table plays tennis with a band of giants.

However, this would have been the medieval form of tennis called real tennis which had developed over three centuries from an earlier ball game played in France about the 12th century.

This involved hitting the ball with the naked hand or later a glove and is thought to have begun with monks playing the game in monastery cloisters, judging by the construction and appearance of some of the early courts.

The game quickly proved to be a success among European royals and in England was taken up by Henry V in the early fifteenth century. A century later Henry VIII made the biggest effect as a young monarch, playing the game with enthusiasm at Hampton Court on a court he built in 1530.

The game flourished among the 17th century upper class in France, Spain, Italy, and in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but suffered under English Puritanism. By the time of Napoleon, the royal families of Europe were under threat and real tennis was mostly abandoned.

In England, during the 18th century and early 19th century, as real tennis became less popular, three other racquet sports emerged: racquets, squash racquets, and lawn tennis (the modern game).

The contemporary sport is tied to two separate inventions.Between 1859 and 1865, in Birmingham, England, Major Harry Gem, a solicitor, and his friend Augurio Perera, a Spanish merchant, united elements of the game of rackets and the Spanish ball game pelota and played it on a croquet green in Edgbaston.

In 1872, both men moved to Leamington Spa and in 1874, in the company of two doctors from the Warneford Hospital, established the world’s first tennis club. In December 1873, Major Walter Clopton Wingfield devised a comparable game for the enjoyment of his guests at a garden party on his estate of Nantclwyd in Llanelidan, Wales.

He based the game on the older real tennis. At the suggestion of Arthur Balfour, Wingfield named it “lawn tennis, and patented the game in 1874 with an eight-page rule book titled “Sphairistike or Lawn Tennis”, but he failed to succeed in enforcing his patent.

Tennis was first played in the U.S. at the home of Mary Ewing Outerbridge on Staten Island, New York in 1874. In 1881, the desire to play tennis competitively led to the establishment of tennis clubs, which led to the four Grand Slams, which are thought of as the most prestigious events on the tennis circuit.

They are: Wimbledon, the US Open, the French Open, and the Australian Open and they evolved into and have remained the most prestigious events in tennis. Both the name and much of the French vocabulary of tennis are borrowed from real tennis:

Tennis comes from the French tenez, the imperative form of the verb tenir, to hold: This was a cry used by the player serving in royal tennis, meaning “I am about to serve!” (rather like the cry “Fore!” in golf). ? Racquet comes from raquette, which derives from the Arabic rakhat, denoting the palm of the hand. ? Deuce comes from ‘? deux le jeu’, meaning “to both is the game” (that is, the two players have equal scores). ? Love is commonly believed to come from “l’oeuf”, the French word for “egg”, representing the shape of a zero. ? The convention of numbering scores “15″, “30″ and “40″ comes from quinze, trente and quarante, which to French ears makes a pleasant sound, or from the quarters of a clock (15, 30, 45) with 45 simplified to 40.

The most costly aspect of having a swimming pool is the construction of it. Maintenance is also expensive. Therefore, those who have garden swimming pools usually strive to get as many hours of use out it as they can. This means sitting in the garden at the poolside whenever possible and inviting friends and family around to share it all with them.

However, there is one more thing that you can do to increase the number of hours you can spend in your pool – you can extend the season that you are able to use it in. The temperature of the water is the only real restriction on swimming outdoors, it does not really matter whether it is snowing or raining as long as the water is warm enough.

Swimming in the rain, the mist and the snow is actually great fun, at least as much fun as swimming in the sunshine, as long as the water is warm enough and there is no lightening. The answer is to fit a water heater into your swimming pool system.

A swimming pool water heater can have a drastic impact on the amount of time you can spend in your pool. If you set the thermostat at 78-80 F (about 25 C), you can double the amount of time you can spend in the water. If you live in a warm part of the country, you might just require to heat the water by a few degrees to be able swim in comfort.

A large body of heated water will lose most of its heat through its surface area, so it is a good concept to cover your pool with a decent quality insulation blanket-cum-pool cover. The insulated pool blankets will reduce your heating bills quite significantly and it will raise the level of pool safety considerably too.

The most common systems for heating swimming pool water are liquid petroleum gas (LPG) or oil fired. These systems are simple to set up and relatively cheap to run. Electricity is also used, but it is not economical. If you live in the correct area meaning that you only require to raise the water temperature a few degrees, you could use solar power.

The problem with solar power is the profit margin the retailers want to make. If you make your own panels, buy in kit form or purchase secondhand panels, solar power would be the best approach, if you have the sun, but not quite enough heat.

At the time, gas-powered swimming pool water heating is still by far the simplest to set up and run and so offers the best solution to heating your pool. You will be able to get LPG water heaters secondhand from numerous sources and you will be able to purchase new from the Net as well. EBay is another good source of LPG swimming pool water heaters

Gardening would be a great deal simpler without interference from garden pests. Most garden pests are small, but they sure are a big hassle. The the majority of common garden pests are insects, of course and it is a curious thing that these insects tend to prosper in circumstances that are not quite right for flowers. Most garden pests do not actually live on the plants themselves, they live in rotting rubbish nearby or in saturated soil and go to the plant to feed. Some insects live in the roots if the earth is too wet.

So, one of the first things to do is to try to reduce the number of destructive insects in your garden. You can go a long way down this road by clearing away any old rotting rubbish and decayed wood. Make sure that your soil is well drained and keep cats out of your garden by squirting them with a water pistol until they get the idea. Cats frighten birds and many birds eat insects.

You should also support insects and other animals that feed on garden pests. Ants can be a pain, but they do feed on a lot of insects. Ladybirds do too and so do spiders. Larger animals such as frogs, toads and lizards eat loads of insects, so a small open-ended garden pond could be created to breed frogs and toads. Lizards will appear on their own, if the circumstances are right.

It is worth taking active steps to encourage the right sort of garden animals. Never use powerful insecticides on your garden as you will destroy all the insects that are on your side as well and the spray may poison the earthworms that are helping to aerate and dry out your soil.

A small pond will encourage birds, frogs and toads, but frogs and toads also like a nice rock to take refuge under during the day. Place a couple of rocks the size of a loaf of bread around your garden in the shade of trees or bushes. Set up a bird table. Birds that eat bread and nuts do not usually feed on insects, but some do. However, the sight of other birds in the garden may encourage insectivores to come in and have a look.

There are fundamentally two types of garden pests: the ones that actually feed on the plant and the ones that suck the sap out of it. Caterpillars can be picked off and destroyed of or you can spray the leaves that are being eaten with a poison for the caterpillars to feed on. Many of the sap-suckers can be seen easily, others cannot. A solution of washing-up liquid and water such as you use to wash dishes will kill the majority of of these including greenfly (aphids).

Slugs and snails do a lot of harm, but some birds including chickens and thrushes find them a delicacy. Chickens can be helpful allies in a garden, but they can be destructive too with all their scratching. Otherwise, you can reduce the population of slugs and snails by killing their eggs.

They tend to lay their eggs in decomposing leaves or rotting compost, but not in compost heaps which are normally too hot for them, so a good clean up will eliminate a lot of the next generation.

You can exterminate the adults by placing a few low containers of beer by your plants. The slugs will drink the beer and drown. It is extremely effective. Slug pellets should finish the t-totallers off. Taking these actions will greatly reduce the number of garden pests attacking your plants.

Safety is a very necessary part of most sports, but even more so with some, like kiteboarding or kitesurfing as it is also called. It involves using a kite of between two and five metres in length to power surf across a flat surface of water.

This is where the greatest danger comes in, a sudden burst of wind can lift you off the water and carry you away. When the gust of wind drops, you could get dumped on rocks or slammed into the side of a building. The option is to let go of the kite but probably lose it. This gets costly, but being left alone in the open sea is not very attractive either.

The fact is that you can never be entirely safe while you are kiteboarding. However, the least you can do is make an effort. So wear a safety helmet and a vest that will both minimize injury from a crash yet also float. These two things alone will protect you from the lesser types of impact and help you to swim back to shore if needed.

Gloves and knee protectors will also help as will a pair of impact-resistant running or jogging shoes or trainers.

Never disable, and always make use of, any safety devices built into your apparatus. It is there for a point. Some of these features might be quick release buckles or buttons and safety straps so that the kite cannot be torn from your grasp, leaving you stranded far out at sea.

Be sure of the winds that you ride. Both on-shore and off-shore winds are dangerous because the one will carry you out to sea and the other could drag you into cliffs or buildings. The safest wind to ride is a side-shore wind. A side-shore wind will be blowing across the bay, parallel to the shore.

It sounds too obvious to say ‘avoid collisions’, but in a way a crash is more perilous at sea than on land. It will take longer to rescue you and longer to transport you to hospital and you may drown. Therefore, do not kiteboard in busy waters – where there are boats or swimmers. Strive to give a hundred metres clearance to anything that would hurt you if you hit it.

Check the weather forecast and the predicted wind speed and use a kite that is appropriate for that wind speed and your level of skill. Do not endeavor to run before you can walk.

Once your kite is aloft, get out on to the sea (or water) as soon as you can and when you are coming in, keep the kite low, so that there is less chance of you being carried away into the road or buildings.

Carry a knife when you go kitesurfing because lines becoming tangled up is not an uncommon phenomenon but this can have several unpleasant effects. It can lead you off to where you do not wish to go and it can snarl you up cutting deep into your flesh. Be certain that the knife itself poses no threat by keeping it in a robust sheath. Wear safety goggles to avoid being blinded by spray.

Power tools have largely taken over from hand tools all around the world, because they permit individuals to get more work done in an alloted space of time. Power tools work much more quickly than hand tools and without the operative having to expend a lot of energy having to turn a handle or push a saw.

However, the increased productivity that power tools deliver comes at a cost: 1] you have to pay for the electricity that drives the apparatus and 2] there is an increased risk to the operative’s health and safety. The cost of the electricity ought to be more than easily covered by the increased productivity, but health and safety is frequently disregarded until it is too late.

People seem to not realize the potential dangers of an inexperienced person using a power tool. For instance, a slip with a hand saw, usually means an ugly joint, but a slip with a power saw can cost a finger; a miss when hammering a nail home can cost a bruised finger or an ugly dent, but a slip with a nail gun can be like having a bullet in the leg.

This is why insurance businesses have deemed it crucial for firms employing trades people to send their operatives on health and safety courses. Claims from inexperienced workers was becoming ridiculous as inexperienced trades people gave up their old hand tool in favour of the powered alternative.

It caused a lot of controversy in the Eighties and Nineties in the building industry among employers and workers alike to have to send people on courses about how to use power tools. In Britain, employers were not allowed to let a carpenter use a rotary saw, for instance, unless he or she could prove that they had been taught to use one. Most individuals thought that the health and safety lot had gone too far.

But there were not so many accidents; less time off work due to injury and fewer claims against the insurance firms.

There was tremendous opposition in our building firm from employees, when we declared that nobody could sign out a power tool unless he/she had a valid safety certificate to prove training in the use of that particular piece of apparatus.

We also had a joinery shop, where traditionally every carpenter could go to make anything he needed. Then this policy came in and just one carpenter out of forty was permitted to use the tools. All of a sudden there was a rush to get safety certificates. The new laws had hurt people’s pride.

They felt that they were being told that they did not know their trade, but once they were barred from using power tools, they were made to look like inexpert apprentices again. So there was a rush to get a certificate and power tool firms would send a safety expert to the workshop to train all the relevant employees in the use of their power tools free of charge and give out certificates.

Then our firm decided to get their ISO 9000 certificate and power tools had to be given certificates of inspection too. So now we had to employ someone to look after the power tools.

Just tradesmen with certificates of competence could sign out a power tool and a power tool could just be signed out if it had a certificate to say that it had been passed ‘safe for use’ within the last two months. All power tools had to have a certificate of reliability attached to it, a set of safety rules and a pair of safety glasses. That covered the firm from accusations of negligence.

That was 15-20 years ago in the building industry in the UK. I am not saying all this as a history lesson, but more to point out that people can go to a shop and buy or hire very hazardous power tools without having to establish competence. Professionals at work have to establish that they and the tools are up to the job, but the public does not.

I am not in favour of another layer of bureaucracy, but I do would like to make people aware of the danger of not knowing how to use power tools properly and without even the most fundamental safety apparatus.

Do not use power tools without safety spectacles is the first rule. Protect your eyes from splinters and flying debris at all costs. A professional would, so so ought you.

What do you do when you get a bit of extra time on your hands? If you are an outdoor person, that could be when the winter comes and the nights draw in or otherwise it could be in the summer when the days are longer, depending on the kind of person you are. In either instance, do you look for a project to fill your time? A lot of wood workers do. They look for a long term wood working project.

Working out your next long term wood working project is not at all hard if you have a garden. There is always something to be added or replaced in a garden. Maintenance is never over.

If you are looking for a long term wood working project for indoors, then I suggest a dining table with eight matching chairs or, if you are very skilled and meticulous, an intricate display cabinet.

However, to return to our medium level, long term wood working project of wooden garden furniture. Hardwood garden furniture is the best because it will last longer than softwoods such as pine, if it is well maintained.

However, timber such as Red Wood, Mahogany, Maple, Oak and particularly Teak are very costly, because their source is limited in many parts of the world.

Therefore, the first thing to do when searching for a long term wood working project, is to decide what sort of timber you can afford to use. Then, when you have the finances ready and know of a supply of the timber you would like, you can get a good set of wood working plans for that task. You can obtain these plans from a hobbyist or craft shop, a DIY store or online at a specialist Internet web site.

The wood working plans will most likely give you an indication of how much timber you will need, but if it does not, then you will have to work it out from the exploded diagram and the measurements on the plans. This is not hard, just a little time-consuming.

The plans might also suggest which nails, screws, glues and tools you will need to have at your disposal before you begin. I think that it is better to have everything in one place, before you start, with the exception of any glass you may need.

It is also a good idea to make sure that you have all the tools essential for the job and that your tools are in good working order. The saws must be set well and sharp; chisels should be of the right size and sharp as should be the planer and the router.

Put a new blade in your knife as well and check your supply of sandpaper in the different grades. You should also have preservative on hand to treat those cut ends and seal the backs of everything.

It is a real gift that most people would like to have: the ability to select a long term wood working project, stay with it and produce a beautiful, unique set of fine wooden garden furniture that will last your family for decades.

July 1st, 2011Raccoons As Pets

Raccoons are adorable little animals with their grey to brown coats and black-masked eyes. They are native to North America, but have been introduced into Europe for almost a hundred years, especially in the area of Austria and Germany. Their preferred habitat is deciduous woods and forests. However, some individuals think that they are good pets too.

An adult raccoon is the size of a middle-sized dog – about knee-height and weighing up to about 35 pounds. Their front paws are about the size of a child’s hands and they have five fingers on each hand or paw, which enables them to open doors and lift lids et cetera. This makes them pretty skillful thieves and reinforces the impression of a masked highway robber.

Raccoons will consume almost anything – they are omnivores. They not just eat fruit, nuts and berries, but they will also take small birds, eggs, rodents, amphibians and fish. They are also fairly partial to cooked food and will go through a dustbin or garbage heap looking for the left-overs of human meals. They also steal pets’ food that has been left out in the garden.

Domesticated raccoons usually wash their food before eating it, whereas this strange habit is hardly ever witnessed in the wild. Raccoons can carry very serious illnesses one of which, rabies, is perilous to humans, but they also carry roundworms which can be passed on to humans with little effect on our health. Most raccoons die of predation or canine distemper. They can infect domestic dogs with the deadly canine parvovirus.

If you see a wild raccoon in your backyard, you ought to report it to the authorities so that it can be checked for disease as around 38% of rabies cases in America come from raccoon bites. Raccoons do tend to bite quite liberally.

If you find an orphan raccoon while wandering in the woods, it is very tempting to take it home, but there is a fairly high danger of it having rabies. If you want a raccoon for a pet, it is better to get one from a breeder.

They are notoriously hard to train. In most states it is illegal to keep a raccoon as a pet, but where it is permitted, the owner normally has to get an exotic pets license.

You should have them innoculated against rabies and distemper and treated for roundworm before you take one into your home. If you buy from a dealer, this ought to all ready have been taken care of for you.

Raccoons are problematic pets because they are basically nocturnal creatures. They can be trained to sleep at night but it is not natural for them. Their diet can be a problem too. Because they eat ‘anything’, they need a very varied diet including live animals like frogs and mice from time to time. Pet raccoons frequently get obese due to excessive feeding and a lack of exercise.

Pet raccoons ought to not be re-released into the wild if you find them rather a problem to take care of, because they will not know how to look after themselves. A pet raccoon is for life, which can last for twenty years.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many of subjects, but is now concerned with distemper in raccoons. If you want to know more, please go to our site at Distemper Vaccines

Timber, or wood, is still the first preference for furniture and other home and garden projects like decking. However, there is a huge assortment of types of timber to choose from. The first alternative is whether you will use hardwood or softwood. Hardwood is a lot more expensive, but it will not rot as quickly as softwood.

Both hardwood and softwood are attractive or can be made to look attractive with a suitable finish. Softwood generally takes more looking after, but can last just as long as hardwood, if it is sealed properly. If you want to paint the wood, then softwood is the better choice, because hardwood does not permit paint to soak in very well, but it will take staining, oiling and thin varnishing.

Once you have decided which type of timber you are going to use, you can think about which variety you want to use. If you are going to use hardwood, you have many alternatives, such as teak, mahogany or oak et cetera. If you choose softwood the most common timber used is pine. Whichever you eventually use, select each length of timber with care. You do not want warped, curved lengths of timber or lengths with an unwarranted number of knots in it. A good carpenter will inspect each length individually.

Then you will require something to hold the decking down. Nails or screws? Screws are almost certainly best because they will not come loose if the timber dries out. If you are using softwood, it will be alright to use stainless steel screws, but if you are using costly hardwood, then I would use brass screws.

You will almost certainly need three inch screws and they should be neatly countersunk, so that the screw’s head is just below the surface of the wood. You can then plug it or not. Yes with steel screws, not with brass screws, but it is really up to your personal inclination.

Prepare the area before you begin. It is probably best to use a concrete or slabbed base. This should be level and above the normal flow of rain water in your garden. If it does get wet, as when you wash it down, the water should fall through the boards and then flow away. You do not want it to stay under the decking so that mosquitoes can reproduce in it.

It is not hard to lay a wooden deck, but it a good idea to obtain a set of decking plans to work by. They will ensure that you do not miss a stage. They will also give you good hints and tips about which materials to use and how to finish your deck so that it does not rot quickly.

Once you have laid your own decking according to the plans, you could put an advert in the local paper and hire your services out to neighbours and locals. Everybody loves the idea of lounging out on their deck or porch in the evening and once you become a regular customer at the builders’ merchant or lumber yard, you may qualify for substantial discounts on materials, which will make your pricing more competitive.

July 1st, 2011The History of Golfing

A great deal of debate has taken place regarding the history of golfing, long traditionally believed to have started in the area surrounding the Firth of Forth in Scotland. A golf-like game is recorded as taking place on 26 February 1297, in the Netherlands, where the Dutch played a game with a stick and leather ball.

However, contemporary research into the history of golf has discovered references to a game very comparable to modern day golfing being played in China during the period of the Southern Tang dynasty, at least 500 years before golf was first documented in Scotland.

It has been contended that the game was first taken to Europe and later Scotland by Mongolian travellers in the later Middle Ages.

In Scotland the first recorded documentary evidence for golf was in an act of the Scottish parliament in 1457 which prohibited the playing of ?gowf? and football in case they detract from the necessary military exercise of archery practice. In a subsequent ban of 1491 golfing was described as ‘an unprofitable sport’!. Something which Tiger Woods is probably ignorant of!

There are reports in the accounts of a Scottish lawyer, Sir John Foulis of Ravelston, that he played golf at Musselburgh Links on 2 March 1672, and this has been welcomed as proving that The Old Links, Musselburgh, is the oldest golf course in the world. Mary, Queen of Scots is supposed to have played there in 1567.

The Company of Gentlemen Golfers, later renamed The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers set down the oldest existing rules of golfing in 1744. Their “Articles and Laws in Playing at Golf, known as the Leith Rules, after the course at which they played support the club’s claim to be the world?s first golfing club, though an almanac published about a century later is the first record of a rival claim that The Royal Burgess Golf Society had been set up in 1735.

The instructions in the Leith Rules formed the basis for all subsequent codes, for instance requiring that “Your Tee must be upon the ground” and “You are not to change the Ball which you strike off the Tee”

When King James VI of Scotland became King James I of England in 1603 the spread of golfing to become a world wide sport commenced. He and his courtiers played golf at Blackheath, London, from which the Royal Blackheath Golf Club traces its beginning.

The spread of golf world wide was started by Scottish soldiers, expatriates and emigrants who took the sport to British colonies and elsewhere.

The Royal Calcutta Golf Club (1829) and the club at Pau (1856) in south western France are significant reminders of these trips and are the oldest golf clubs outside of the British Isles and the oldest in continental Europe respectively.

Proof of early golfing in the United States includes an advertisement published in the Royal Gazette of New York City in 1779 for golfing clubs and balls, and the notice of the annual general meeting for a golf club in Savannah printed in the Georgia Gazette in 1796.

However, as in England, it was not until the late 19th century that golfing began to become firmly established. There are a number of competing claims to be the oldest club, but what is not contested is that in 1894 representatives from the Newport Country Club, Saint Andrew’s Golf Club, Yonkers, New York, The Country Club, Chicago Golf Club, and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club met in New York City to form what was to become the United States Golf Association (USGA).

Most people just let their garden mature naturally in that they do not select a particular style. This is all right, but it can become a hodge-podge, if not looked after. Some people, however, consciously choose to landscape their garden according to a certain style or a theme. Some of these themes are very sophisticated and others are quite simple.

One of the many themes to pick from is the Texas Style. We all know that everything in Texas is done on a grand scale, so you would be excused for thinking that landscaping in the Texas Style would necessitate a large garden.

It is perhaps easier to carry out your landscaping in the Texas Style in a bigger garden, but it just depends how you go about it.

The first things to remember are that Texas is very hot and so the terrain closely resembles wilderness. Plants and shrubs are thin on the ground, so to speak. Landscaping in the Texas Style is what you could call minimalist gardening.

You will have to make use of every square inch of your property, if you only have a small plot and the climate will have to be fairly warm in the daytime although it is good if it gets cold at night. This will allow you to grow many of the plants that thrive or at least grow in Texas. One good thing about Texan flowers is that when they do blossom, they really do show a lot of colour.

One of the kinds of plant that you are sure to have success with is the cactus. There are many varieties of cactus, so you should not have too much difficulty finding several kinds that will grow in your garden in order to produce a Texan dry climate look, as long as it does not rain every other day where you reside.

Cacti yield spectacular flowers when they bloom, but they have big thorns, so if you have young children, the Texas Style garden may not be for you for a few years yet.

Once you have your plants sorted out, you can begin looking for accessories. You can pick up ideas from the old cowboy films and from magazines, but a few recommendations are: a chow wagon style barbecue area with a canvas hood; some broken wagon wheels; a well, functioning or not (it could even be a fish pond that looks like a well); boulders and wooden fence posts.

Boulders are often overlooked by gardeners but there are some fascinating stones, boulders and rocks in all sorts of shapes and colours. Boulders with fossils in them are fantastic conversation starters. Smaller rocks can be used to create a rock garden and this will increase the choice of plant life that you can grow in your Texas Style garden. You will be able to plant succulents, small cacti and other small plants that often grow in this austere environment.

Lighting should be low and subtle so that you can see the stars at night. You could even have a camp fire with log seating or you can accomplish this look by using low powered solar lighting. Solar powered lighting will also save you from having to have an electrician wire up your garden.

When you have finished landscaping in the Texas Style, do not forget to get pleasure from it by eating outside as often as you can. Barbecues, steaks and Texmex food are the order of the day.

June 30th, 2011The Benefits Of Athletics

Gymnastics is probably not being taught enough in our schools, but there a lot of advantages to practicing gymnastics. It is fairly obvious that gymnastics will improve physical condition, but there are psychological and emotional advantages too. If you begin learning gymnastics in school and if you like it, it could also supply you with a job.

There are quite a few exercises that the novice gymnast can practice, whilst gradually adding more difficult trials as the gymnast’s body becomes more and more supple and fit. This is a quite slow process, but it is a highly worthwhile one.

Learning how to raise one’s goals slowly but surely is very good for the mind and physical stamina. Stamina is more useful in daily life than strength, although gymnasts have to be strong as well.

This continuous improvement and sense that you can do something that most people cannot is very good for confidence. Children, particularly girls, frequently lack confidence, so practicing gymnastics would help bring them out of themselves.

If the youth enters competitions like representing the school or the town, they will meet numerous strangers in a safe situation which will further enhance their confidence and social skills, This is an area that numerous other children find difficult until they are more than fifteen years of age.

The young gymnast might even be taken abroad to compete or compete against visiting foreign teams. Making foreign contacts like this and perhaps keeping in touch by letter or email with a gymnast friend from the other half of the world will broaden the child’s horizons significantly.

Increasing one’s degree of skill and competence necessitates planning by the athlete and his or her coach. When the blueprint to success has been though out, the gymnast will be expected to stick to the goals they have made together. Learning responsibility like this is a very worthwhile thing for an adult let alone a child. The child will learn self-discipline in training, diet and exercise.

Gymnasts are also judged by people they frequently do not know and in quite a public way. Many people would resent this type of public criticism and find it a problem to bear, however the gymnast must learn to take the criticism as it was meant – not as an attack, but as a useful tool for advancement. This is another difficult lesson to learn for a lot of the general public.

It is easier to conceal oneself in a team. If a football team loses a game, some may blame the defence and some might blame the forwards, but if it is only you on the mat, everything that is said is to do with you and just you. This hurts in the beginning, but it is character and confidence building once you realize that not all criticism is intended spitefully. It can be used to your benefit as well.

If the student gymnast actually likes gymnastics, he or she may go a long way in more senses than one. Even gymnasts that are not the best get to travel, take part in competitions abroad and take sponsorship. After all, not every company can afford to sponsor the top athletes, most are happy to sponsor a pretty good athlete who works hard.

If you get to this stage, your advice will become sought after and there is a career waiting for you once you get too old to take part in competitions yourself – you can pass on your knowledge to other youngsters as their coach.

When many people, singles and families alike, think about booking a holiday, many of them would only think about going to the beach for a two week’s lounging on the beach under the sun and swimming in warm, azure sea.

However, many of the best, most famous beach locations are magnets for crowds of people. It appears that most people like the sand, the sea and the sun. Now some people go to these places precisely because they are full of activity. They like the crowds and the night clubs that attract them. Mainly singles go to these types of destinations and a holiday affair is not far from many peoples’ minds.

Couples and older people may desire a little less noise, pollution and commotion. However, there are beaches which meet these requirements too. Often they are private beaches. Some have hotels on them but some do not. Those that do not often have inland beach cottage rental properties instead. These are nearly always self-catering.

When most people think of a beach it is instinctively associated with the sea. However, this need not necessarily be so. There are also inland beaches on lakes and rivers. These beaches are usually referred to as inland beaches. Somewhere to stay can be a problem with even some of the best inland beaches.

Many of these inland beaches are simply not well-known enough to make a hotel commercially viable, but some of them have cottage rentals instead. These cottages, or cabins sometimes, can be difficult to find if you do not reserve early enough. They are usually complete homes, fully equipped with all the household facilities you have grown used to: a fully furnished living room, multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and a modern kitchen.

Inland beach cottage rentals are popular because they are usually located exactly on the water’s edge. This makes the bit of beach immediately before your cottage your private beach. You can sleep on it at night if it’s hot, lie there all day or set up a few fishing lines.

In the evenings, you can hitch up with neighbours to have a party or keep yourself to yourself. For this reason, it is a good idea to check photos of the cottage before you make a reservation.

If an inland beach cottage rental sounds just up your street, there are thousands to pick from in the United States and Canada. The Great Lakes are a particularly beautiful place to go. There are excellent locations in the Finger Lakes region of New York state and along Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

You will not regret going on holiday to an inland beach cottage rental property. There are so many variations that there is certainly something for every pocket and every family size. Singles are not so well catered for, but if you want a quiet holiday alone. maybe to study, then this might fitting be for you too.

You can fly into some of these resorts by seaplane, but it is more probable that you will take your own car or a rental car, if you want to get out and do some exploring further afield. Personally, I would rather rent a boat.

Moroccan furniture is normally solid timber and stylish. Morocco is an ex-French colony, but it is very near Spain as well. In fact, two small parts of Morocco, Melilla and Ceuta are still under Spanish jurisdiction.

This means that Moroccan furniture and decor has Berba, Arabic, French and Spanish influences. These Mediterranean influences are prominent in traditional and contemporary Moroccan furniture.

If combined with Moroccan decor and colours, Moroccan furniture can transform your home. Walls are usually emulsioned plain white or cream and lightly decorated with old carpets or tapestries with one or two photographs or paintings hanging among them.

Reds and browns are the predominant colours. Poignant writings from the Koran or other Arabic philosophers are often copied out in bold lettering and framed.

Moroccan accessories such as lamps, lanterns, mirrors, benches, vases, mosaic end tables, ottomans, rugs and ceramics can add that special local flavour to the decor, setting off the solid timber or padded fabric furniture.

Pillows and cushions feature large in Moroccan interior and garden decor, but they also use sofas and seats in the European manner. Morocco is well-known for its leather craft and leather is frequently used to cover chairs, sofas and footstools or poufes.

Loose rugs are important for sitting on and they are taken out and beaten each day to keep them clean as Morocco is a hot, sandy and dusty country if you travel a few miles inland from the coast. Camels are still used for transport in rural parts and camel hair is woven into rugs, blankets and wall coverings.

Moroccans like tiles and mosaics and Arabic style tiles are quite distinctive if you would like to use them in your bathroom and kitchen. If you would like to dine in Moroccan style, they usually eat at a very low round table with the primary dish in the centre from which everyone helps themselves, although in a family, some members will feed others as well.

Following convention and hygiene, you may only touch food with your right hand, although everybody will have washed both hands before coming to the table. Bread, rice and couscous feature highly in Moroccan food as does potatoes, carrots, lamb and chicken.Water is served during the meal and tea and coffee afterwards often with very sweet cakes covered with icing sugar and syrup.

People take it easy at home wearing long, loose-fitting garments and lounge on benches or on rugs on the floor surrounded by cushions. In the evening, lighting will be low offered by low wattage bulbs concealed behind red and brown stained glass or cloth. Candles, scented or not also feature a great deal in living rooms and bedrooms unless someone wants a stronger light to read by.

Candles in wall sconces are common methods to highlight extraordinary areas and illuminate corridors and some doorways. Often these sconces do not hold candles, but hold scented oil with a floating wick which is cheaper to leave burning between the hours or twilight and bed time.

June 28th, 2011Welsh Music Traditions

Wales has a long tradition of music and has been called the ‘land of song’ since at least the Nineteenth Century. This reference to Wales as the land of song, probably comes from the enthusiastic singing in Welsh churches and at Welsh sports meetings, especially at rugby matches. However, Wales’ links with music go much further back than that.

Wales has a tradition of folk music which is closely linked with Scottish and Irish folk music. There are a number of types of musical gathering that resemble those in other Celtic countries in the United Kingdom. For instance there is the twmpath (folk dance session), g?yl werin (folk festival) and noson lawen (a traditional party similar to the Gaelic “C?ilidh”).

Contemporary Welsh folk musicians have frequently resurrected traditions which had been suppressed or forgotten, and have competed with imported and native rock and pop trends. This has been especially true since the 1990′s.

Despite modern Welsh trends in music, Wales will always be linked with Male Voice Choirs such as the Morriston Orpheus Choir and Treorchy Male Voice Choir which enjoy world wide fame.

These choirs were frequently made up of workers from one village or one coal mine and so it was quite natural for men to sing when one town played against another, especially if that game was Wales’ national sport of rugby. The first time the Welsh National Anthem, ‘Yr Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’ (‘The Old Country of my Fathers’, normally translated as ‘Land of My Fathers’), was sung at an International sporting event was in 1905

Along side the choirs, brass bands developed in villages, working men’s associations, churches and at work particularly in South Wales where brass bands are still very popular. In fact, the Cory Band is one of the most successful brass bands in the world.

There were quite a few world renowned Welsh singers in the Twentieth Century and some of them are still singing to jam-packed audiences worldwide. Ivor Novello was one of the first who became well-known during the First World War as a singer songwriter. Then there was Geraint Evans and Delme Bryn-Jones during the Second World War.

After that, Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey began their singing careers in the 1950′s and are still singing fifty years later. There were also popular bands during the Seventies and Eighties such as Man and Budgie and solo singers such as Shakin’ Stevens, nnie Tyler and John Cale (Velvet Underground).

In more recent times, we have seen the Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia, Super Furry Animals and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci; the last two bands being famous for many their songs’ words being in Welsh.

There have always been operatic singers as well such as Rebecca Evans, Aled Jones, Bryn Tervel and Charlotte Church. Cardiff hosts the ‘Singer of the World’ competition but the Wales also has its very own Eisteddfod, where Pavarotti sang for years. It was because of Wales tradition as a nation of singers that Paul Robeson visited Wales in the Fifties

It is very difficult to keep cats out of your garden, but do not give up, it can be managed. Cat owners may not understand why gardeners want to prevent cats gaining access to their gardens, but there are justifiable reasons, it is not always that gardeners hate cats. Cats are ferocious hunters and can also be very destructive.

For example, my next door neighbour had a cat, but felt lonely when her daughter moved away, so she permitted the cat to to have young. Now she has six cats. But cats are not like dogs. My dog stays in my garden not upsetting anyone apart from by barking if a stranger walks past the gate However, that is his job and he is not only telling me but the neighbours as well. These six cats do not stay in their own garden though, so we have all acquired six cats whether we want them or not.

The first problem I became aware of was that birds stopped coming to pick my dog’s bowl clean in the afternoon. Then I saw a cat eating a lizard, a beautiful nine inch specimen and then I remembered not seeing a lot of lizards lately. There is one lizard, the Tokay, that they have completely wiped out – I used to listen to them calling at night, but no more.

Cats also dig up plants when they defecate and use furniture as scratching boards, so I do not want these destructive animals in my garden. But how do you keep cats out of your garden?

Walls are rarely protection against cats, but cats will often prowl along the bottom of walls and if they come across a gap, they will possibly go in out of inquisitiveness, so repair all low-level gaps in your fences. There is not much you can do about the top of your wall other than putting broken glass or electrified wiring up there, but that is not a good idea.

Some dogs are good at keeping cats away, but not all. My dog got a nasty and completely unexpected swipe of claws across his nose one day. He used to chase them when they were kittens, but now they have grown up, he only growls to tell me a cat is on the premises. I cannot blame him.

In Australia, many gardeners reckon that transparent bottles full of water confuse cats, so they stay away, but in my experience, only Australian cats react in that way.

A row of prickly bushes or flowers along the base of a wall where cats frequently come in works. At the bottom of high walls too, where the cat cannot see them until he is on top of the wall. I often see cats mewing (in frustration, I hope) on the top of one of my walls. The only route down is to go back.

If you still cannot keep cats out, then you will have to train them not to come in. This is easiest achieved by using several methods. If cats are using your flower pots are toilets, try smearing the pots with pepper, lavender, lemon, mustard, or tobacco. Or you could leave a mothball in each pot. Some of these will work for you, others will not.

Then there are industrial repellents, but I do not want to resort to them. However, if you have a big garden and a big problem, it might be the only way. There are also high frequency sound emitters. Humans cannot hear them, but almost all animals can, so I think that that is deplorable too.

At night, motion-activated external lighting is a great upset to cats. Cats have very sensitive night vision so a quick flash from a floodlamp really puts them off a garden.

The best deterrent is water. You can buy motion-activated sprinklers, which are excellent at keeping cats out of your garden, but I like to sit in my office or in the garden with a powerful water pistol and squirt them by hand. The lizards have not come back yet, but neither do the cats quite so frequently either.
