Student loans are the most common form of student aid nowadays. In general, those in the know say that they make up just over half of all monies that students obtain from outside their families or their own employment every year. However, this increase in the quantity of student loans, has brought with it a rise in the quantity of student loan defaults. Therefore, student loan debt is one of the key concerns to those whose business includes lending to students.

This difficulty seems to be getting worse every year, as college expenses and fees are going up faster than inflation. This state of affairs is made worse by students taking one loan after another. Because student loan debts are here to stay, it is important that students try to take certain actions to minimize their future indebtedness. This basically means borrowing responsibly.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the best advice anyone can ever give you about student loans is to think before you sign up. Too many people rush headlong into the whole loan process and are sorry about it later. In order for you to avoid the major pitfalls, I have put together a few tips.

How Much Do You Actually Require?: it is very easy to borrow all that an institution is prepared to loan you. Please, never ever forget that they are in business to make loans to students and their salaries and bonuses are reliant on you accepting. They are not there to help you out, but that can come about, if you borrow sensibly. Work out what you require and, if you like and are prepared to work in the Summer, add ten percent. You may not have to pay the loan off until you have left college, but make sure that you are allowed to if you want to and make sure that you do if you can. Even if you are a tad bighearted with yourself, you do not have to draw it all down and what you don’t take you don’t pay for (check the conditions of the loan on this one).

Search For The Best Student Loans: it is common sense to look for the loans with the best terms. However, in truth it is an habitually ignored task, because it is time-consuming and tedious. If you cannot be troubled, attempt to rope one of your friends or family in to give a hand. At worst, ask around other students and even lecturers. After all, they have seen student loans going on for years. Note that the lower the interest rate, the less expensive the student loan is. This essentially means, the less you will have to repay for your student loan debt. If you are totally lost or on your own try these search terms (they should be in order from cheapest (ie lowest APR or annual percentage rate (of interest)) to the dearest:

Student Loans: a] Federal Perkins Loans; b] Federal Subsidized Stafford or Direct Loans; c] Federal Unsubsidized Stafford or Direct Loans; d] Alternative or Private Loans

Parent Loans: a] Federal PLUS Loans; b] Private Loans or Alternative Loans

The first set of loans is made directly to the student and the second is made to the parents. it is also worth remarking that a lot of colleges have their own access to funds, which may be cheaper than those listed. So, check it out first.

I cannot stress too highly that you should only borrow what you require and even then be cautious. It really is a ghastly experience to be working hard when you have finished college and have to pay back huge monthly amounts of money that you borrowed irresponsibly three or four years ago. So, how can you keep the loan amount down?

Restricting The Loan Amount: do you have any investments? Do you have anything you don’t require that you can sell? If you are living on campus, do you require a car? Really? You could also terrify yourself half to death by using one of the numerous student loan reimbursement calculators. Every time you think of borrowing, work out how much it will cost you when you start work. How much is the starting remuneration in your profession anyway? Scared yet? Can you factor in such things as working in the vacations?

Apply Early: once you are sure of what you are doing, be courageous. Grab the bull by the horns and apply early on or your loan could be late and you’ll get problems at college, Good luck, it isn’t straightforward to get it right the first time.

Most people do not look forward to death. They would like to live a long life and endeavour to stay eternally young. The peoples of each country spend billions every year on health care and beauty products.

Some individuals believe that the length of time you live is written in fate and there is nothing that you can do about it, others believe that we only have a certain number of heart beats, but most individuals think that genetics, diet and lifestyle are the major influences.

However, there might be another factor worth looking into: your place of residence. There are a couple of places in the world where people appear to live longer, on average, than is normal for their country or globally.

Take the city of Okinawa in southern Japan. Okinawa has more than a million inhabitants, 900 of whom are over 100 years of age. Japan has an aging populace in general, but nowhere there is the same as Okinawa for longevity and the percentage of centenarians is between four and five times higher than in the UK or the USA.

Not just do Okinawans live longer, but they also tend to stay healthy until their dying days, which is everyone’s dream. Diet is thought to be the main reason why Okinawans live such long, healthy lives. They eat a great deal of fish, tofu, soya and seaweed and swill it down with lots of tea.

This makes their diet low in saturated fats and pretty low in salt. However, it is also a widely-held belief in Okinawa that one should just consume until one is 80% full not 100% This may put less strain on the digestive system, but no one is quite sure yet if this has a bearing on living a longer, healthy life.

Then there is Loma Linda in California, the USA. The citizens of Loma Linda live an average of five to ten years longer than the residents of near-by towns. The town is mainly Seventh Day Adventist, which preaches vegetarianism, no smoking and no alcohol. Some will look to these reasons as the reasons for living longer.

However, this does not account for why almost everyone, even the smoking, alcohol-drinking, meat-eating residents, lives longer. Others put the longevity down to religious belief, but researchers are mystified. Perhaps going to church and depending on God relieves believers of some of the stress of daily life and stress is well-known to be a reason for major diseases.

Another strange place is Owoda on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia. It is just a village of less than 2,000 residents but it has far more than the average number of 100 year olds than elsewhere. What is even stranger is that there are as many old men as old women which is not the norm anywhere else in the world.

The well-known Mediterranean diet and the pleasant climate are considered to be factors at play here, but it may also have something to do with their genes. The residents were virtually isolated for hundreds of years and marriage among relatives was not unusual. Usually this is not recommended because it can cause abnormalities. It looks like the abnormality that inter-marriage caused for the Owodans is longevity.

When people leave school or higher education, they tend to think that the learning part of their lives is behind them and that it is time to put that knowledge to decent use to create some money and have a family. There are exceptions to this model, of course, lots of them, but most people merely quit learning and start working. Some jobs demand that the person doing the work goes on courses and keeps abreast of developments, but most do not.

Unfortunately, the part of the brain that learns, the medulla oblongata, needs continuous stimulation, otherwise it tends to hibernate and each time it goes into hibernation it gets more difficult to wake it up.

Therefore, it is decent advice to keep learning. Hobbies require constant learning and so do educational toys and puzzles. ‘Use it or lose it’ is an apt saying with regard to one’s ability to learn.

Everyone has to solve problems every day, but these problems are not the same ones that our brains need to remain active. We tend to solve issues in our daily lives without having to think too much or having to do any study. Examples of the types of educational toys and puzzles that are beneficial are crossword puzzles, word games and sudoku.

These educational toys and puzzles are in most of the daily newspapers but some are simple and others are hard. If you purchase a newspaper in which the puzzles are fairly easy, either switch to another newspaper or buy mind games and puzzles books of the level that still challenge you.

This is the second-best approach though, it is better to have the puzzles in the newspaper that you read everyday and carry around with you so that the mind puzzles are there with you whenever you need them.

However, there are other types of mind games and puzzles that you might prefer. There are hundreds of portable games machines that you can put in your pocket or bag to be played in your dinner break or whilst travelling.

I am not thinking about ‘shoot em ups’ here, but instead portable chess machines, which permit you to play either the machine or another human.

However, you may not like chess, but you may like draughts (checkers), or any of the dozens of other board games and card games, like bridge, that have been ‘computerized’.

On a different level, there are hobbies that can produce the correct type of mind puzzle to keep your mind stimulated. Programming is one, mathematics is another. Astronomy or bridge are others.

If your child goes through a phase of illness and you are concerned that he or she might be lacking stimulation, Lego could be a solution. Lego is suitable for all age groups from babies using larger blocks to teenagers utilizing computer-controlled motors.

There are loads of educational toys and puzzles for individuals of all ages, in fact there have never been so many, so just go down to the mall and choose one out for yourself or your loved one.

Lego sets have come a long way since my brothers and I had Lego sets in the UK. Lego UK is an off-shoot of the original Danish company known as Lego, however, Lego UK may just as well be considered a separate firm in its own right. Nowadays Lego sets are a lot more than only boxes of interlocking building blocks, Lego sets are themed now to make them more relevant to a child’s particular interests. Lego is seeing a resurgence.

The name ‘Lego’ is not a genuine word, not even in Danish. Rather it is an acronym of two Danish words “leg godt”, which mean “play well”. It is Lego Group’s name and part of the logo of the Lego Group.

The Lego Group was the brain child of Ole Kirk Kristiansen in 1932 and the Lego company has remained in the Kristiansen family’s hands until today. The current owner of the Lego Group is Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a grandchild of the company’s founder.

Lego’s mission statement is the same the whole Lego Group worldwide and that is to:

?Inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow?

Lego UK explains this by saying that their ultimate aim is ‘to inspire and develop children to think creatively, reason systematically and release their potential to shape their own future – experiencing the endless human possibility’.

The Lego Group now has over 130 subsidiaries and branches all over the world, one of which is Lego UK. From its unassuming beginnings in a small Danish carpentry workshop in Bilund, the Lego Group has evolved into the fifth largest toy manufacturer in the world, although it is still based in Bilund.

The fundamental building block of the Lego Group is the famous eight-stud Lego block, which has remained unchanged since 1958. In fact, it is unlikely to ever change since it has been calculated that there are over 900 million different methods of mixing just six of these blocks together.

More than 900 million different methods of combining just six Lego building blocks of one size and one colour! Think about the possibilities if you give a child a box of Lego building blocks of different sizes and colours.

Lego takes education very seriously and since the Seventies, the Lego Group has extended its product assortment to include younger and older people, The Duplo block is for pre-school children and are large enough for small hands to manipulate and too substantial to swallow.

For older children, teenagers and adults, there are electric motors that can be incorporated into models which can be controlled by computer. One well-known British TV presenter contacted Lego for help in constructing a house from Lego to live in.

In fact, this full-size, twenty foot tall, house was built by 1,000 volunteers using 3,300,000 bricks and everything is manufactured from Lego building blocks. Yes, everything, including a flushing toilet, a sink with taps, the cat and the bread bin.

We are fortunate in the West, or most of it anyway, because the European Community, north America and Canada have strict laws on how safe kids’ toys must be. In spite of this, there are lots of deceitful importers about who will import cheap junk toys that could be dangerous to children, which means that anyone purchasing kids’ toys has to have their wits about them.

Having said that, the larger stores do do their best to weed out the rogue suppliers and in fact most of the unsafe children’s toys are found out about before they go on sale. Be cautious in discount shops and outdoor markets though.

Once you get your safe children’s toys home, the time to be wary starts. This is because most accidents in the home involving toys do not happen to the person that the toys were purchased for. This is because adults trip over them. The stairs are the worst

The first thing that anyone buying toys must look for is the label. In the United States this is called the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) and in Europe it is known as the Certificat European (CE). However, be cautious, because these labels can be forged very easily.

If you are not used to buying toys for children, the next indicator to look for is the age range for which the toy is intended. In general the marker will give 5+ or 7-12, so you still have to exercise some judgment.

Educational toys are important to children and one of the best of these that you can build on as the child grows older is Lego. Duplo is the form of Lego that is most suitable to very young children. This is because Duplo building blocks are larger that the regular Lego building blocks so that small hands can manage them easily.

One of the worst risks for very young children is choking. Young children put everything into their mouths but Lego has manufactured these Duplo building blocks too large to swallow.

As your child gets older, you can add to the Lego set right up to adulthood. There are Lego electric motors for teenagers and there are numerous adults that have continued using Lego well past their Twenties.

If however your child does have an accident with a toy, you must attempt to find out how it happened immediately after seeing to your child. If the accident was obviously the child’s fault or someone else’s, you can report it if you like, but if the difficulty came about because of a difficulty or failure inherent in the toy, you should report it.

The first place to report the toy is to the local council and then you must inform the manager of the shop where you bought it from. Keep the toy until the wheels of bureaucracy turn enough to get around to you

They will get back to you and you might save other children and their parents from going through the same problems that you did.

Lego keyrings are a bright notion from the Lego Group and Lego UK. Lego keyrings are meant to be amusing, yet convenient items for the Lego enthusiast both young and old. Some of the Lego keyrings can be difficult to get and are encouraging collectors to begin a collection.

You can purchase Lego keyrings on websites or at almost any Lego shop. There are tens of different types ranging from simple coloured building blocks to Lego Star Wars characters and they are not expensive either.

Lego has been very smart with their keyrings because they are convenient little presents for all ages. They are fun items, they do not cost over a couple of pounds or dollars and the numbers manufactured of some of them are really quite small ensuring a healthy secondary market for collectors on Net auction sites such as eBay.

At the moment there are about four dozen different Lego keyrings ranging from a simple, traditional, red Lego building block with eight stubs to Darth Vader from the Lego Star Wars figures assortment.

If you want to begin a collection of Lego keyrings, go to one of the Lego retailers on the Net to see what is obtainable and then go to eBay to find out what has already come and gone. You might be amazed at how a keyring that was purchased last year for a few pounds has trebled in value by now.

The most well-liked of the Lego keyrings are the small figurines. There are policemen, firemen, teachers, postmen, nurses, GP’s, spacemen, Batman, Lego Star Wars figures, Lego Harry Potter figures. All kinds, in fact.

Some of the Lego keyrings are just sold in sets and some are sold at a cheaper cost if bought in a set. There is a huge second market on eBay for the new Lego characters and the older ones as well, so if you are interested in starting a new hobby purchasing and selling Lego figures, have a look in a Lego shop on the Internet for special offers and discounted deals.

If on the other hand, you are not too interested in the Lego keyrings but would still like to be in on the action, you could check out the secondary market in Lego figures. Lego figures can be purchased separately, but they usually come in a package as with the Lego Star Wars figures or the Harry Potter sets.

One suggestion is that these figures are normally relatively costly, whereas the keyrings are not, so you could purchase the Lego keyring of the figure you would like and cut the keyring part off. This is an excellent method of building up your group of Lego characters at a fraction of the normal price and the only difference is that you cannot remove the arms and legs from the keyring figures like you can from the dearer other type.

Why would you want to take the arms and legs off anyway? They can only get lost or damaged by removing them. No, go for the Lego keyrings instead.

Are you an anime toy collector or do you just comprehend how well-liked they are? Well, the fact is that because they are so well-liked with both children and collectors alike, some individuals are making a lovely living out of trading anime toys both on and off line. Making money from your hobby is both fun and pretty easy, if you know what you are doing. It is certainly possible for you to turn a profit from them too.

There are prerequisites to earning money from any hobby and trading in anime toys is no exception. You have to actually immerse yourself in the toys and know which ones are difficult to buy and which ones are the most well-liked with enthusiasts. You can acquire this knowledge by reading, yet to be truthful, if you do not already know it, you are probably not interested enough.

If you are not au fait with anime toys, try applying these principles to what you are interested in. Anyway, returning to anime. There are comics, books and films that you ought to be familiar with before you can have enough information to begin trading. You need to know the characters and also their personalities.

The easiest manner to begin is if you sell what you already have. If you have looked after them, they could be worth quite a lot of money otherwise they will attract a reduced price. This is not necessarily a difficulty. Sell all your old tat and use that money to buy the most popular examples of anime toys that you can afford, but buy it ‘as new’ and boxed in its original carton.

The top collectors will only buy ‘new unused’ in its original packaging, so this is the level that you have to aim for. Anything that is second best, unless it is very rare is a waste of time and is only good enough for children to play with. Real collectors just invest in the best – think of coins and stamps.

By selling off your old anime toys, you can achieve a couple of objectives: you will be ‘clearing the decks’ but also furnishing yourself with start-up capital. Frequently, it is a lack of start up capital that stops people from ‘having a go’. If it does not cost you anything other than your old toys, which I am sure you will have already grown out of, if you are thinking about dealing in them, you will not be speculating with your own money really.

The way to start is to sell your old stuff in order to acquire start up capital and then use your specialist knowledge to purchase anime toys that are only in the very best state. Then you work your way up the ladder until you are buying ang selling off line locally or further afield at toy fayres but also on line, say on eBay, in only the very best examples of anime toys. Stick with it and you can make money, if you are passionate about your subject.

In the first part of this short series on how to make money buying and selling used cars, we looked at what personal traits someone wishing to be profitable in this business would have to have. In the second section we looked at the best places to locate such a business and in this section, we will look into sourcing our stock – our vehicles.

So, where can you get used vehicles from? You will almost certainly get people coming in off the street attempting to sell you their cars or trucks. That is frequently a good supply of stock, if you carry out the essential checks to make sure that they are not stolen, but this source will dry up from time to time – particularly in the summer.

Other places to obtain supply are private auction houses, bankruptcies, bereavements and government auctions, where vehicles are often quite heavily discounted.

At private auctions, anybody can bid for the lots that go under the hammer. Sometimes there is a minimum selling price, sometimes there is not, but the vendor must pay to enter his car in the auction anyway, which means that he has a vested concern in selling it to recoup this cost. If a car does not reach the minimum bid, try talking to the seller privately, you might pick up a genuine bargain.

If you are unaware of local car auctions where you live, try looking in the local paper under “Up And Coming Events” or in the Yellow Pages under “Actions” or “Car Auctions” or go on line and make the same inquiry including your region.

Government auctions are fantastic places to buy supply of any type, including cars or trucks and machinery. These goods are typically either government surplus (new and used) or assets seized from the public. In The USA, it is best to register your interest in the auction catalogues of the two main governments auctioneers: the Department of Defense and the General Services Administration (GSA). Other countries have similar bodies, which your local authorities can help you to get in touch with.

These government agencies auction off tens of thousands of vehicles or every conceivable description every year in the USA. Cars and other vehicles form a large slice of these auctions in monetary value – you would honestly find it hard to comprehend how many cars or trucks the government owns in the name of the people, from limos to lawnmowers. They all have to be replaced on a regular basis according to a schedule and the old ones are sold off.

The unbelievable fact that works so well in the business person’s favour, is that the government is more engrossed in clearing out their sheds of all this gear to make room for more than it is in turning a profit on it. All you need to do is register with the Department of Defense and the GSA and they will send you their auction catalogues automatically. This way you will have time to inspect the goods before you bid.

The next part in this mini series will discuss how you can determine the value of the goods that are being auctioned off.

There was a colossal rise in the birth rate after the Second World War. These babies were dubbed the Baby Boomers and they are the babies born between about 1946 and 1960. This means that the first Baby Boomers became pensioners in 2011 at the age of 65.

It should be noticed that when the first Baby Boomers came of age, they produced the changes in civil and human rights and discrimination associated with 1968. They also fashioned the Hippy Movement, Flower Power and the Sexual Revolution. So what will ensue when they become pensioners?

The Baby Boomer generation is the richest generation ever, but they have never experienced the drop in income, status, health and mobility associated with older age, so it is likely that there will be some type of pensioners’ movement.

About 22% of the American population are Boomers, which means that there will be tens of millions of people retiring over the next ten years. This has several important consequences. The first one is for health care; the mass retirement could or almost certainly will put the health care system under massive pressure.

The second one is employment. Because the Boomers’ generation is the largest section of society, when they retire, there will be a shortage of labour. After all, if the Boomer generation is the biggest portion of society, then by definition the following generation must be smaller.

These statistics are roughly the same for all Western countries and it probably accounts for why there is a rush in Western countries to permit immigration. Firstly, immigrants will take up the slack in the workplace and second, their taxes will help pay for all the old Boomers.

So, with any luck, neither the state finances nor the Boomers’ health will suffer, but what other effects might this mass retirement have? Well, there could well be a colossal rise in demand for retirement homes both in one’s home country and abroad. Baby boomers are prolific travellers and lots of them may like to retire to warmer countries or warmer parts of their country.

The southern states, provinces or counties of Western countries in the northern hemisphere and warmer countries in general, like Thailand, Spain and Italy could see a boom in retirement housing. The construction industry may get a much required shot in the arm.

Most Western governments and numerous private construction firms already have plans and even dynamic projects to satisfy this requirement for retirement housing when it begins to kick in. If the Boomers make a mass migration out of the cities into the countryside or to the seaside, it could free up millions of inner city residences and at the same time make lots of construction work outside the cities. But not only that, millions of extra jobs will be created in support and service staff positions.

The aging of the Baby boomers could be just the kick start that most deteriorating Western economies need to get back on their feet after the banking crisis of 2008-2010. Let’s hope so.

Hawaii is a beautiful location, we have all seen the films and the holiday photographs. The above ground scenery is dazzling, but what not so many individuals know is that the sub-aqua scenery is just as striking. The good thing is that you do not have to know precisely where to go to enjoy diving because the diving is brilliant everywhere on the islands.

Not just is the sub-aqua scenery beautiful, but the water is warm too – all year through. You will find millions of fish, aquatic flora, coral and ship wrecks, everything that divers like to look at. There will never be a diver that regrets having gone on a diving holiday in Hawaii.

Would be divers can best learn the hobby in Oahu. There are lots of diving schools and instructors there that have the right to grant a diving certificate after a day or two’s tuition. This is very fast, but the courses are comprehensive, so you can safely go shallow diving after acquiring your certificate. Whilst shallow water diving, you will see plenty of fish, plants and coral.

There are also a number of wrecks at Oahu, so you will be able to investigate these too, if you have a bit more experience. There are some huge ships down there and millions of fish.

One of the best locations to go scuba diving is Ka’awaloa Cove, which is in western Hawaii. The cove is just accessible by boat, but that is not difficult because there are several small boat businesses that offer a ferry service. Kona is another beautiful diving location on the big island.

Both of these regions cater for both the greenhorn and the expert. Kona is thick with plankton, which may not sound interesting in itself, until you understand that the plankton attracts giant manta rays. The rays are especially spectacular when seen on dives at night.

Red Hill and Kona also offer excellent opportunities for diving because there are underwater lava flows. The lava flows are best seen by daylight because that is when the sun shines off them giving them their name of Red Hills. They are only accessible by boat, but then that is not difficult either.

The smaller island of Maui also has great diving sites. Check out Molokini and its underwater volcanic crater. The crater is home for reef sharks, majestic sea turtles, numerous tropical marine fish and the spectacular giant manta rays again. This is one of the best dive sites on Hawaii and really has to be on your short list of must do dives.

The great thing about diving in Hawaii is that there is so much to see and do wherever you are situated. OK, the well-liked attractions are simply that, very well-liked, but numerous people like being with plenty of other individuals – after all there is safety in numbers, but Hawaii also has quiet areas which you can discover if you look and the diving will be great there too because the fish are the same and the water is as warm.

The first step on the road to financial stability is clearing your short term debts, which is basically everything except your mortgage. The second is to have some type of emergency fund, what individuals used to call ‘savings’. I read somewhere recently that the average bank account has less than 300 in it – it seems to be a very sorry state of affairs, when a new set of tyres for the car can put most people in debt.

My father used to say: “If you can not afford the tyres, then do not buy the car”.

That has always seemed a good rationale for running my financial life and has always stood me in pretty good stead. Saving is a good habit to get into and should be encouraged in children even to the point of letting kids buy Premium Bonds (in the UK), which is nationalized gambling (the total interest on the bonds nationally is given out every month as prizes).

The next question is how much do you need to be safe. Well, there is no real answer to that question. At least not in real monetary terms because we all have different financial needs and responsibilities, but you could say enough to support you ‘in the lifestyle that you would expect’ for at least three months. Perhaps even six months, if you do not have a right to social security payments in the country where you live. It would be nice to have a year’s worth would it not?

So, if you can do that, why have a credit card, you may ask. Well, a credit card saves you having to carry your gold about with you like the rich men of old had to and it makes Robin Hood’s job more difficult as well.

It also makes financial sense to be given thirty days free credit on purchases when you are earning thirty days interest on your money. Credit card purchases more than a certain amount normally confer additional rights on the purchaser too – benefits like free insurance against loss for a year.

If however you are only starting down the road to financial independence, the first thing you ought to concentrate on is paying off your credit card debts. Mortgages are a financial tool that can save you tax, so do not worry about them too much, just make sure that you never- ever – miss a payment. In fact, keep one or two repayments in advance, if you can.

I know that this all sounds terribly simple and I know that you are thinking that it is not, but you are wrong. It is easy and the earlier you begin, the easier it is. Learn to put money away each week. If it is too late for you, teach your children. You might think that the banks are ripping you off – I think they are too – but what else can you do?

Put money away each and every week and feel proud to see the amount rising. Be proud that you can afford a new set of tyres, but hoping that you do not have to buy them is all right as well.

Have you had a few financial knocks recently? Do you need to be Safeguarding Your Financial Future? If you do, please go over to our website entitled DIY Credit Repair

Not so long ago, it was not at all uncommon to see blind people walking the streets tap-tapping away with their white sticks, being guided by a dog, normally a Labrador, but I have not seen anyone like that in Britain for years, as far as I recall.

That has to be a decent thing; it must mean that we are beginning to cure or at least alleviate most forms of blindness.

My aunty had cataracts for years when I was a kid in the Sixties – it was simply one of those things. Some individuals got them when they were old and others did not.

My brother’s mother-in-law had cataracts in the late Nineties and she was enrolled on a two year waiting, but at least she had hope and they were going to be removed free of charge.

I do not know of anyone else that has eye trouble except myself. I could not get my glasses clean one day and then a friend said he saw a white dot in one eye. He took me to the hospital and the optician diagnosed ‘premature senile cataracts’.

Well, I live in Thailand now and he did not use those exact words. He told me that the cataracts were because I was prematurely senile.

I asked him if that was what he really intended; he looked it up in a book and we both had a hearty laugh about it, although he never actually corrected himself. My condition turned out to be a little bit more serious than just cataracts, but when I went from the local hospital to a major hospital in Pattaya, the surgeon saw me within 30 minutes and asked me if I wanted them removed.

I said that I did and she was willing to do the operation there and then. I got it postponed by 24 hours, but she would have sorted my eye out that day in a 30 minute operation, which does not need anaesthetic. I think that that was marvelous.

We have come a long way from routinely seeing blind individuals on the street and putting up with cataracts through a two-year waiting list to instant removal of cataracts by laser surgery in 40-50 years.

At least we have in the Developed World and in the East too, if you have the money. There are still millions of people in Asia and particularly in Africa suffering blindness and partial blindness for the sake of an easy 30 minute operation.

Two weeks after my surgery, my other eye began to cloud over. It was as if it had been holding on with its last scrap of strength until I got his mate sorted out. I had that one done last year and once I was allowed to take off my patch and look around me with two good eyes again for the first time in a decade, I could not believe that I had forgotten how bright the world actually is and that I had not noticed how dingy my world had gotten.

If you are worried about an eye operation, do not be. What you will experience when you can see properly again will make all the worry seem ludicrous and if you get the opportunity to give someone their eyesight back, please do it.

One of the most vital aspects of scuba diving that a diver has to learn is how to set up the breathing tank. Divers do not use oxygen in their tanks, they use (or, increasingly, used to use) compressed air. However air is approximately 70 percent nitrogen and 30 percent oxygen and the nitrogen can cause nitrogen sickness under pressure, so more and more people are turning to Nitrox.

Nitrox is not air, but it is still made up solely of nitrogen and oxygen, although not in the same percentages, which you can vary. The difficulty with increasing the amount of oxygen in the mix is that there is a greater likelihood of suffering from oxygen toxicity the deeper you go. Therefore, the trade off is that the more oxygen you use, the shallower you may swim.

It sounds like a rough decision, you can suffer from either nitrogen or oxygen toxicity, take your choice. However, there is a third option and it is called Trimix. Trimix is the ‘air’ that deep sea divers make use of. It is a mixture of three gases, as its name implies: nitrogen oxygen and helium.

Helium is used as a form of filler. It does not do us any harm and it does not do us any good either, but it permits divers to take a lung full and it reduces the volume of nitrogen and the volume of oxygen thus reducing the chance of illness.

The only problem with helium is that it conducts heat five times more than oxygen and nitrogen. This leads some deep sea divers to suffer from a condition known as hyperbaric arthralgia. Hyperbaric arthralgia is a kind of joint pain that a number of divers experience as they go deeper than 100 feet in salt water.

Deep sea divers have to learn about the different Trimixes as part of their course, because one day they will be responsible for selecting the mix they use. The option is not only compressed air, nitrox and Trimix, because there are different ratios of the gases in Trimix to take into the equation as well.

For instance, a 10/70 Trimix will be made up of 10 percent oxygen, 70 percent helium (and 20 percent nitrogen). This form of mix is suitable for diving to a depth of 330 feet in salt water or 100 msw (metres in salt water). Fresh water is a little lighter than salt water. This does not count at lower depths, but it does after a hundred feet.

Breathing and gases are just one aspect of diving that you will have to learn if you want to go diving. Another aspect of diving that is linked with diving is the rate of ascent. Divers used to get taught not to come up faster than their smallest bubbles, which is about 60 feet per minute. However, many instructors now think that this is still too fast and recommend 30 feet per minute with a three minute wait at 15 feet.

The patient of Lasik surgery has two foremost responsibilities regarding his or her eyes: firstly to pick a responsible, skilled surgeon, which should not be very difficult and secondly, to take care of his eyes after the operation by following the guidance of the surgeon on post-operative care. This second part is very important and should not be taken lightly.

The post-operative supervision process is not a problem, but if you are worried about it, you could enquire of your surgeon what it will entail before the operation. The physician or a nurse will be able to explain the procedure of supervision to you in detail or they will give you a pamphlet.

There may be some peculiar sight aberrations for a couple of days after the operation, some of which are fairly normal. One of the most common aberrations that are standard for a couple of days are halos around lights.

However, you should be certain that you understand the difference between what is standard and so no grounds for concern and what should be reported immediately

There are different Lasik procedures and the procedures are advancing all the time so it is not possible to give precise details in this article. Moreover, the shape of the eyes and the causes for deteriorating eyesight are individual to each patient.

Some of the advice that your Lasik surgeon may give for your post-operative eye care may include the following, although different doctors might have their own advice.

The first thing is to bear in mind that you have just had an operation including anaesthetic. There may not have been any blood but it was surgery all the same.

All patients are desired to rest after an operation and you will be no exception. If you had had an operation on your knee, you would use it as little as you could for a time and the same is good advice for your eye.

Attempt to sleep for a couple of hours after the operation or at least close your eyes and rest. Infection is the chief concern, so do not poke or rub your eye and do not strain it by trying out your recently improved vision by reading or watching TV.

If you have to entertain yourself in this way wear an eye patch. Your surgeon will almost certainly have given you a stiff plastic eye guard, which you should wear at all times.

Some surgeons will advise against getting water into your eye for a few days, which means washing just from the neck down, no showering, no going out in the rain and definitely no swimming.

Be careful with bright light, it cannot damage your eye but it does hurt. Your world will get much brighter after the operation and looking at a light bulb can become painful. Be cautious of watching moving traffic when the sun is shining, a car window can catch the sun and reflect it back into your eye unexpectedly.

You will be given eye drops so do not fail to use them. Lasik surgery can dry your eyes out, if this happens they might be able to give you substitute or extra drops.

It is a fantasy of millions of workers to set up their own business and say goodbye to their boss once and for all. You can see just how widespread this idea is, by looking at the number of ‘business opportunities’ there are on line with titles like ‘Fire Your Boss’. They sell well, so I am led to think, but I would not touch them with a barge pole.

Of these millions of aspiring business people, many people do all the difficult work of researching the business and doing their arithmetic, but fall at the last fence, for many it is the highest fence of all, the funding of their business. Some people cannot arrange adequate credit and others are scared of losing their own money.

The first thing to point out here is that no-one, no matter how rich and no institution, no matter how generous they are towards start-ups, will provide finance to any business, the directors or proprietors of which are not willing to hazard their own money. So, if you do not have any capital and do not have any security, do not quit the day job until you do.

However, if you have some capital (and depending on the business, it does not have to be a lot) and you are willing to risk it, then you have a decent chance of persuading others to take a gamble with you.

The first thing to do is make a business plan. There are loads of books and computer programs to help you do this. You can learn to make one yourself with a library book and a finance exercise book from a stationer’s or you can use a spreadsheet on a computer to make the maths simpler. A spreadsheet will also compute predictions more easily.

Be honest in the creation of your business plan. The people who will be looking at it are professionals and if you think that you are going to kid them, you are only kidding yourself. Make a detailed business plan for twelve months ahead and another far less detailed section projecting the trend on for two or four more years.

It is a wise idea to find out precisely what your bank or local enterprise board actually wants to see in the plan, before you show it. Be certain you have a thorough knowledge of your business and the plan, because there will be questions to be answered and you do not want to be seen to be struggling for the answers.

Assuming that the bank (or whoever) is prepared to forward you some credit, open a business bank account and submit an application for a business credit card. They are more impressive to business people than private credit cards, because it proves that a financial institution has checked you out and approves of you.

After that take this information to merchants that you are likely to use for supplies and request credit. If you have got this far, you are likely to get it from the merchant and negotiate a large discount so that your money goes even further.

By now, you have leveraged your small amount of money to get money from the bank and credit from a merchant (or two, so that you can play them off against each other in a price war).

You have come a long way, but do not attempt to run before you can walk. Now is the time to build up your credit status in order to qualify for a higher credit limit. You do this by never missing a payment – ever. In order to make sure that you can pay your bills in full each month, you might have to curtail your business dealings at first.

This really goes against the grain, but might have to be done. If it happens two months in a row approach your bank manager and merchants for better credit terms to cope with the increased volume of business.

Smoking cigarettes used to be a great deal more widespread than it is today. Now most smokers are looking for ways of stopping smoking. This is because smokers and the general public at large are more aware of the risks of smoking cigarettes nowadays.

Just look at films manufactured in the Sixties and before, everyone is smoking. It shows how common smoking was compared with today. This would not be possible now as you may not smoke in public places, on public transport, in restaurants or in bars any more in most Western countries and elsewhere too.

The difficulty with smoking is that not just the smoker suffers, so does everyone around about the smoker. This is called passive smoking and it affects those working or living with smokers – a barmaid or a spouse for example. So, all these individuals are endangering their health so that tobacco firms can become richer.

No matter how long someone has been smoking, it is possible to stop the habit. Anyone who has stopped smoking will tell you that stopping smoking cigarettes is all to do with the mind. You really have to want to stop smoking or you will not do it successfully.

Individuals have different ways of stopping smoking cigarettes. Some say that nicotine patches or nicotine gum help, because you can wean yourself off nicotine slowly without having to inhale the poisonous smoke of cigarettes. Nicotine is highly addictive and most of the chemical withdrawal symptoms have to do with the shortage of nicotine in the body.

Most people find that the only effective way of stopping smoking cigarettes is to quit smoking dead – in one go. It is very hard to cut down or to swap to a weaker brand. You are still inhaling poisonous smoke. It is still no good to you or anyone around you.

Cutting down or switching brands is not effective, because you will still smoke other smokers’ and you will still be in a smokers’ environment. You will also find yourself smoking tomorrow’s five cigarettes today, promising not to smoke any the next day. That never works. You have to quit smoking dead.

There are several situations that can provide the motivation to give up smoking cigarettes. Illness is usually high on the list. A few years ago two friends of mine who smoked heavily stopped smoking cigarettes within weeks of every other.

One was in his sixties and had smoked for almost sixty years: he was told that his lungs were beginning to go, but that if he stopped smoking, the shock might kill him. He quit smoking one morning and survived, but what a dilemma!

The other was in his fifties and drove a lot as a travelling salesman. The physician told him that he would almost certainly have to have a leg removed next year, if he did not give up smoking and that the other may go a year or so after that. He stopped smoking instantly and still has both legs.

So it seems that the trick to stopping smoking cigarettes successfully is to find your motivation (do you want to live long enough to see the grandchildren married?) and bear that image in front of you at all times. Take nicotine substitutes if you have to and stay away from environments where individuals smoke more, like pubs.Join a sports club instead, something like tennis, table tennis, swimming or even chess.

If you have been told that your blood pressure is too high (that is, that you have hypertension), then what you were really being told was that your lifestyle is not especially healthy. This is because, unless your hypertension has come about because of ethnicity, age, sleeplessness or medication, you are doing something incorrect in your daily life.

Blood pressure control for most individuals means initiating lifestyle changes for the better or taking tablets for life. If you have hypertension but you cannot go to see your doctor as frequently as you would like, you could always purchase a home blood pressure monitor and keep tabs on your blood pressure yourself.

The best type to get is an automatic digital monitor with a self-inflating cuff. It ought to also have a pulse monitor and a number of memories, although you can always use good old-fashioned pen and paper. They are not costly any more and should cost between $30 and $100.

Some have a lifetime guarantee and are as accurate as your doctor’s sphygmomanometer, which is the gold standard of blood pressure monitors. You ought to take your readings at the same time every day (or two or three times a day at the same times) and make a record of it or them. In this fashion you can compare your progress (or lack of it).

The first thing to do is quit smoking (if you smoke, obviously) and then cut down on heavy drinking sessions, if you do that). Doing that will improve your general health whether you have high blood pressure or not.

The next thing to do is to reduce your weight, if you are overweight by dieting and exercise. If you are not overweight, you will still need to increase your level of exercise and modify your diet for the following reasons. Exercise decreases your blood pressure and an excessive amount of salt (also called sodium) will raise your blood pressure.

So, whichever way you look at it, you will have to exercise more and take on a low-sodium diet. One of the methods of reducing sodium in your diet is by eating fresh fruit and vegetables and stop eating canned and other fast foods, which are stuffed with salt.

These lifestyle alterations are not easy, so if you have to take some of them on board, consider getting help. For instance, you could use patches to help you stop smoking. You could visit the pub less frequently or simply go there later in the evening. You could ask your spouse to go on the diet too or you could join a support group on or off line.

There really are lots of resources out there to help you circumvent hypertension, but if you just cannot be bothered, then nip along to your doctor’s and get your first batch or high blood pressure tablets and be sure to create a repeat appointment, because you will be going back and forth for the rest of your life.

Acne is a horrible condition, because it not just affects people’s looks but it can have an effect on them psychologically as well. Doctors can go a long way to clearing up acne, but the psychological effects can take years longer to get over. One of the main concerns is that most of those who have the difficulty of facing acne and coping with its effects are quite young and not actually emotionally robust enough to do it.

We all know how cruel some people and particularly children can get. Children and teenagers with acne can get taunted and bullied until they think that their life is not worth living and they absolutely do not want to go back to school. If this leads to absenteeism, the sufferer’s whole life could be affected. It is definitely no joke for those who have the daily problem of facing acne and coping with its effects.

So, how can you assist a child or friend who is suffering from the social stigma of having acne more than the acne itself? It is not easy, because frequently people do not want to talk about it or they pretend that they do not have a difficulty.

However, the likelihood are that they do. It is the same as an overweight woman saying she does not want to lose weight – balderdash. They are merely saying that to save face.

The best tactic is to remind your child that acne is a sign of the body switching from a child to an adult and that this process does not last that long. Usually, a couple of months or a couple of of years at most. It is cold comfort to know that the acne might ‘only last a couple of of years’, but at least it is not forever. It will pass.

In the meantime, you can take your child to see your doctor or a dermatologist. There are things that you can do to alleviate the condition and they are neither difficult nor costly. There are several different reasons for acne or kinds of acne, but they all boil down to the same thing – too much oil is being trapped under the skin and when the pressure builds up, the skin gives way. That is why it is known as an eruption or a break-out.

Go to the doctor’s with your child so that you comprehend the difficulty as well and can give opportune advice and reminders of what the doctor said to do and what not to do.

In essence, you have to be there for your child at this, what is almost certainly, the most awkward and most testing time of his or her life so far. Be certain that the child knows that you are willing to do what it takes to help them over this episode in their life and do not attempt to belittle acne or its psychological effects or you run the danger of making your youngster think that it is stupid.

Go on line with your child, there are literally thousands of resources, web sites and blogs that cover the topic of facing acne and how to cope with it.

All women and a increasing number of men would like shiny hair. This is because shiny hair is perceived as belonging to a healthy, vivacious person. The fact is that as we age, men’s hair falls out and women’s hair becomes more lifeless. So how can you get age-defying hair?

There are a few tricks of the trade, some of which are pretty obvious when you give them a bit of consideration. The first and most vital tip is not to over wash your hair. Your head produces oil to protect your hair and it does that because it thinks that hair is vital to help it regulate the temperature of the brain.

OK, these days we can put a hat on or erect a parasol, but it takes the body a long time to change. The point is to not wash all the oil from your hair too often. You want to wash the dirt off your hair but not all the oil.

Consequently, rub the shampoo into your scalp and not into your hair. As the shampoo runs off your hair it will take the dirt off your hair with it but only some of the oil. This makes a huge difference.

The tip above is the most important bit of advice because it applies to whichever shampoo you buy, but the next tip applies to what shampoo to purchase. Do not skimp on shampoo if you would like lovely-looking hair.

Do you remember the days when you had to wash your hair, rinse it and then apply conditioner and then rinse again? Well those really were the good old days as far as hair is concerned. These all-in-ones clean on the principle that the conditioner will not work in the presence of oil and the shampoo will not work if there is no oil.

This means that on the first wash, half the shampoo is wasted, but the shampoo has to scour your hair for the second wash (conditioner) to work. On the second wash the conditioner does its job, but the shampoo half goes down the drain having done nothing.

In other words, your cheap bottle of shampoo with conditioner costs two times as much as you paid for it, so why not buy different shampoo and conditioner in the first instance?

The combined shampoo and conditioner is a con because it makes you think that you are saving time and thereby getting something for nothing. You are not.

The best advice you can get for your hair is to purchase a mild shampoo without conditioner. By all means buy one that says that it is better suited to your type of hair if you like. Then do some research on your hair type and natural colour on the Net and make your own conditioner or purchase one.

Individuals used to use vinegar, beer, dandelions and all kinds of items and one that I have recently come across is Butterfly Pea. Do not become guiled by adverts and time saving if you really like your hair

If you are a smoker, then the overwhelming odds are that you have attempted to give up smoking, even if you never told anyone that you were attempting to give up. The old joke among smokers is that they have given up giving up.

That is a real pity and a very sad joke. Most smokers started while they were young and impressionable, but it takes a great deal of willpower to give up for good.

If you are attempting to stop smoking, then I hope that some of the tips set out below will be of use to you in your task to kick the habit. The truth is that it takes most people years to really give up smoking, although there are plenty of people who give up one day and never smoke again – ever.

It really depends on the sort of person you are really. Some people can cut down gradually and others know that if they are going to stop, then they need to make a clean break once and for all.

It is easy to judge progress with the person who ceases from one day to the next, but a lot more difficult to do the same with someone who cuts down. For example, how long is someone going to take to reduce from one packet a day to two?

How does a partner know when someone is smoking ten cigarettes an evening, that they have not already smoked thirty during the day? It is very difficult.

In the end, the quitter is alone and if he or she wants to tell lies about their progress, they can. No-one else will know, but at the end of the day, they are only telling lies and trying to fool themselves that they are trying to give up smoking. Having said that, a smoker must reward himself for every step of real progress.

A decent tip is not to rely on just one strategy to give up. For instance, you could wear a patch and reduce your intake by five or ten real cigarettes every week. Try nicotine gum at the same time.

Always tell people that you are giving up and never take a cigarette off anyone and never give anyone one either. Do not get into ’rounds’ or ‘flashes’ of offering cigarettes.

If you find that you smoke more whilst you are in a stressful situation, such as at the time to submit the end of year accounts, hold off trying to quit until after then. One of the times that most smokers have a big problem cutting down is whilst they are in the pub drinking alcohol with their friends. This is probably the hardest time to overcome the habit.

Many people like a cigarette with a drink after work and if you fit into this category, strive to go home from work for a drink or give up smoking with a friend and take it in turns to go to their house and yours for a drink after work. Once the first three months are up, you could go back to the pub and see how you get on or you simply might not want to anymore.

Is it possible for children to have too many toys? I think that there probably is a case against children having too many toys. I grew up with four younger brothers (about two years between each of us) and our largish communal bedroom was lined on two walls with shelving from floor to ceiling with toys and every Christmas there were sacks full of even more toys that we did not have any more space for.

I was the oldest, so you would think that I could pass my baby toys down the line once I had no use for them. That worked while my brothers were actually babies, but as their consciousness began to expand they liked to play with what I was playing with and so all the toys that I used from, say three to eight years of age were ignored by my brothers as they leap-frogged past those years and went straight to year eight and nine with me.

But we never got shot of those five years worth of disregarded toys or any other toys either. This would have been in the Fifties and Sixties and I do not believe that recycling was quite the buzz word back then that it is nowadays.

My parents did not throw them out, we only squirreled them away on the top shelves, which we could not reach anyway. I assume that after sitting up there for ten years they were eventually thrown away but I do not know as I had already left home by then.

The point is that those superfluous toys were not doing anyone in our family any good and they were taking up room. It would have been far better to have given them away or not even to have purchased some of them in the first place.

We always had to have ‘one each’ so that there would be less squabbling. So, we had items like five plastic trumpets, five tin xylophones, five plastic guns, five of this and five of that and we never used them after Christmas Day. We enjoyed playing together at board games like Monopoly, Risk and cards and although I, being the oldest, won nine times out of ten, my brothers never seemed to mind.

We also had a train set, Scalectrix and a big box of Lego. We would spend all weekend developing various scenarios with combinations of the train set, a roadway and Lego houses and Lego railway platforms. OK, these three toys were almost certainly expensive, but they were quality, versatile, could be used in combination and, in a way, were educational. These were the toys that we stored on the lower shelves.

What I am saying is that more is not always better and in the case of toys, more can be just a waste of money. Instead of all that junk on the top shelves, which was usually donated by aunties and uncles by the way, it would have been better to buy us a new bridge for the railway set or a new chicane for the Scalectrix or another box of building bricks for our Lego collection.

High blood pressure, which is also known medically as hypertension, is a condition where the pressure of the blood coursing through your arteries is significantly higher than standard. Most medical professionals will state that the beginning point for individuals more than eighteen years of age is 120/80. However, there are causes that could render those readings not standard. Age is one of them.

The first number is the systolic arterial blood pressure, which means that it is the pressure read when the heart contracts, beats or pumps out blood. The second number is when the heart sucks in blood, ready to pump it out again.

These figures are given in millimetres of mercury and are stated in mmHg. Higher readings of either of these numbers can indicate a problem. One thing to make clear here is that it is impossible to deduce or estimate the pressure of your blood without using either a sphygmomanometer ( the one your doctor uses in the surgery), which is the gold standard of blood pressure monitoring devices or a home blood monitoring machine.

Blood pressure can be affected by many items such as: time of the day, age, weight, height, mood, fitness, diet, level of activity and stress, which may or may not be part of ‘white coat syndrome’ amongst others. ‘White coat syndrome’ is the anxiety experienced by individuals whilst they have to get examined by a doctor. This applies to children more than to any other age grouping.

Blood pressure also changes during the day, so in order to acquire an accurate reading, it is necessary to take several all at the same time of day. It is also prudent to wait 45 minutes after drinking caffeine or ten minutes after arriving before taking a reading.

So, what is normal? The real answer, although it is maddening, is that only a medical doctor can tell you, however for an adult, they say that it is 120/80, for an adolescent it is 110/70 and for an infant it is 80/45.

However, when measuring and evaluating the blood pressure of adolescents, you have to keep in mind that age, sex and height matter. Therefore, an adolescent is said to have high blood pressure if the blood pressure is over that of ninety percent of individuals of his/her age, gender and height.

The causes of hypertension are classed as primary or secondary. Primary means that it is all your body’s fault and secondary means that the cause is something else, say, medication. Hypertension can also be the result of race or other hereditary reasons. Males of African descent are especially at risk.

One of the items you can buy to keep you knowledgeable about your family’s blood pressure worries is a home blood pressure monitor. These devices are quite cheap and are very accurate, so buy an automatic digital monitor but take it to your doctor to be certain that it is accurate and ask for the readings that are pertinent to all the members of your family.

You simply cannot predict an emergency, can you? That is the difficulty with emergencies. You can have insurance and you can have fantastic friends and family, but if they cannot help as and when you require it, you are on your own again. Then what happens if you require cash all of a sudden?

Recently, a friend of mine went down to the bank after a day’s work to get money from the ATM with his cash card as he had done for years. He put the card in, typed in his PIN and whir, whir, whir: “Please contact the branch that issued your cash card”. He knew there was money in the account and he was sure he had put the PIN in correctly, but it was a pain. No money and he would have to get an hour off work.

This he did and went to the bank, where he was told that his account was frozen due to a suspected attempt at identity theft. He was told that there would be a short investigation of probably five working days, which meant no money for a week.

What do you do? What are the options? Friends, family? He did not want to admit to them that he had no money, so the only alternative accessible to him as he saw it was an emergency payday loan.

His account would be reinstated eventually, there was no question of that and he had all the usual insurance, but none of them could help him at this point. He had simply fallen through the support net that he had produced for himself.

Lots of people do not have such a support net anyway and lots of individuals do not have any savings either. Savings and insurance are frequently the first fatalities of a recession, which is one of the reasons for the rising popularity of payday loans.

However, it is important to read the terms and conditions and make sure that you will be able to abide by them or you could find that you have made a rod for your own back by accepting a payday loan.

The first conditions are normally that the applicant is of legal age, in stable employment and earning more than a thousand a month. Occasionally you are required to have a bank account as well (so make sure that you always have at least two in two different banks).

Anyone who meets the criteria will probably be successful. The money is accessible instantly, but it depends on how much is asked for. The usual range is 100 – 1,500 and the repayment will normally fall due within twenty-eight days. The interest rate, including charges, is horrendous, often at 30% or more, but to be fair, most of it is a charge, after all it costs equally as much to have an administrator approve a payday loan for 100 as it does for a payday loan of 1,500.

It is crucial to be cautious with payday loans because they are so costly. They should only be used in dire emergencies and never for luxuries.

One of the features of a consumer society such as is prevalent in the West, is the multitude of gadgets that we are persuaded to purchase by advertisers and the debt that we are persuaded to get into in order to be able to pay for them.

One of the most crucial financial tools ever invented was the credit card because it made credit easy, which allowed people to get into debt easily and purchase more items with money that they did not have. The invention of the credit card was a stroke of brilliance for the financial and commercial world.

Most people comprehend the value of having a credit card and do not misuse the credit facilities offered by them. However, it can be very handy to be able to put your hands on a couple of thousand at a moment’s notice and it is a great deal safer than carrying cash.

Most individuals think about applying for a credit card when they realize the convenience of having one. Applications for credit cards are usually done soon after eighteen or twenty-one years of age, which is an indication of the value people place on owning a credit card.

Many people are lured into applying for a credit card by low APR (annual percentage rates) and air miles, not many cards charge a fee any longer.

If you are thinking of applying for a credit card, I hope that you will find some of the following suggestions useful. It is vital to gain a feel for the latest credit card offers and the best way of doing this is on the Internet.

Write the pros and cons of a dozen credit card offers onto a sheet of paper and put the various points under columns like: APR, Fees, Penalties, Free Days etc, so that you can evaluate them without difficulty.

Be certain that you are completely aware of the terms and conditions of using the credit card that most suits you. Above all, read about the penalties for late payment and think of whether you can realistically comply with them.

Check the APR before applying for a credit card. Is it unusually high? What is the average for credit cards? How does your intended card compare?

The APR does not matter in fact, if you anticipate paying your bill every month. Some of the firms charging high APR’s permit longer free credit periods, so straight comparisons are not always easy. It sometimes seems that credit card businesses look for methods to complicate the conditions of use of their cards, so be wary.

These periods of free credit are frequently called ‘periods of grace’ and are very important depending on how you intend paying off your monthly debt. Look out for transaction charges too and any other surreptitious charges.

Consider procuring at least two credit cards, one with a long period of grace so that your money continues to earn interest in the bank, and one with a short period of grace but a very low APR in case you have to borrow money in an crisis.

If you are thinking about swapping or applying for a credit card, check out the free info on our web site about Using Credit Cards wisely.. Free reprint available from: Applying For A Credit Card: A Few Tips.

Office stress is a very frequent occurrence. Office stress comes about because of the pressures of the work, which is frequently not so easy to define, particularly in a small firm. In a large office, jobs are quite clearly defined and everybody knows what they are responsible for.

In a small office though, the few members of staff often have to cover a dozen or so different jobs and so office stress can build up. Office stress can build up rapidly if the boss is unsympathetic or a member of a small office team goes off pregnant or sick whether a temporary stand-in is found or not.

Office stress is a very real phenomenon especially in a small business. For example, it is not uncommon for a company with $1 annual turnover to be managed by a staff of two – the office manager and a secretary. This means that the office manager has to be able to do every job and it is hoped that the secretary will be able to do most of them as well. This creates office stress.

The secretary-cum-assistant will need to understand filing, typing, word-processing, data entry for book-keeping software, how to read job sheets, time sheets and invoices. The secretary will also have to welcome visitors, but keep sales people at bay, while staying polite.

The secretary will also have to have good phone manners and be able to reply to enough questions to be able to shield the manager from time wasters and deal with serious questions if the manager is not in. These jobs are difficult enough on their own, but office stress builds up if you find yourself trying to do three jobs at once and that is not uncommon.

You could be keying in time sheet data the manager has gone to visit site, when the phone rings with an enquirey and a potential client comes in asking for a quote. This is enough to make office stress soar.

The manager will also have to be able to carry out these tasks, but the office manager will also be responsible for management accounts, pay, job costing, pricing, composing letters and keeping up with the law as the Company Secretary, which means that he/she will have to know enough about employment law to advise the directors.

This leads to tremendous office stress. Besides all this, the office manager is normally responsible for paying and collecting taxes and keeping up with regulations and employment law. In these days of litigation and government claw backs, mistakes in any legal field are punished with costly fines or compensation claims. This degree of responsibility also only increases the level of office stress.

The difficulty is that office stress, like most types of stress, leads to tension and irritability and irritability can lead to a short fuse and flashes of temper, which just goes to worsen the situation and raise the degree of office stress another peg.

The degrees of office stress soar if an important piece of office equipment breaks down, because it is always just as you need it. Because it can take hours or even days to get it repaired, you are expected to be able to carry out minor repairs yourself. And then if the boss is an unsympathetic or just unlikeable person then the level of office stress can get even worse.

People look upon retirement in different ways. Those who have saved or invested sufficient to be able to enjoy their retirement in style usually look forward to abandoning the daily grind, whereas those who have not saved are usually not looking forward to it. However, there is another set of people who span both of these classes who do not want to retire either.

It is not because they do not have sufficient money, it is because they are scared that they will not have enough to do. This is a real shame, but it is normally proof of an over-concentration on one’s job and not enough other interests outside work.

Here are a couple of tips to help you prepare yourself to make the most of your retirement.

Do not regard retirement as the end of your useful life. Yes, it probably was for your father or grandfather, but it does not have to be for you because individuals live longer nowadays. Your grandfather almost certainly only had six or seven years after retirement, but you could have twenty or more. If you still want to work, you can, either for someone else or for yourself.

Widen your circle of friends and interests or hobbies. Five to ten years before you retire, begin an interest that has absolutely nothing to do with your job – archery, ballooning, deep sea fishing, marathon running, bridge or embroidery, anything, but be willing to fill the gap that losing the nine to five will make.

Many retirees become far less active than they were when working. This not good, so plan to take up a replacement activity like gardening, rambling, swimming, sailing or golf. In fact, anything to keep those pounds from piling on just at the time of your life when they can do the most damage. If you do not like the idea of taking up an active hobby, modify your diet and walk for thirty minutes every morning and every evening.

If you do not want to start a new job or a new business, consider donating some of your free time to a good cause. You could visit the elderly or the lonely in hospital. You could visit lonely people in the community or you could teach computers or gardening to those who want to learn. Join the Women’s Institute, Victim Support, visit prisoners or help out at one of the local institutions.

Study something new. Have you always wished to be able to play the guitar, speak Spanish or use the Internet? Well, now is your opportunity. There are usually day and night classes in these and other subjects.

Travel more. All right, you might not have a lot of money, but you do have a bus pass (in many countries, anyway). You could set up a fortnight’s holiday using your bus pass for daily travel from guest house to guest house. You could write a book or merely read all those books that you have not had time to read over the last fifty years.

May 1st, 2011Symptoms Of Stress

We are all under stress the majority of the time and a lot of people like to think that they understand stress and can use it to get a piece of work done to the best of their ability, but do you really know what the symptoms of stress are and what it can do to your body? When we are piling the stress onto ourselves, we just assume that our bodies will adapt and get on with it, but is that actually true?

The fact is that we all have our own level at which stress is reasonable. This is because stress can be emotional, physical and mental and if you go beyond your capacity for any length of time in any of these fields, you can cause temporary or even longer term harm, which could require professional medical help.

If you do not take measures to recover your equilibrium, you will soon find that the apposite role in your life will deteriorate: that is, your relationships will fail, your physical health will crumble or your ability to do your job in the right manner will vanish.

The physical indications of stress are aches and pains, including headaches, general tiredness and lethargy. Unchecked, these symptoms can lead to migraine, muscle tension and stiffness.

These prime alterations to how your body operates can then result in other issues such as diarrhea or constipation, nausea and dizziness. These symptoms of stress, in turn, can lead to sleepless nights or insomnia.

Once it gets this bad, people normally turn to medication, but medication can only give temporary relief such as sleeping tablets. This can lead to dependence.

If the sufferer already has a weak heart, this combination of indications of stress can lead to chest pains, palpitations and erratic heart beat, which in turn can be precursors of heart disease. Please note that this chain of activities is not guaranteed.

Individuals are different and some doctors are better than others, but stress and heart disease have been shown to be linked.

Symptoms of stress can also reveal themselves in behavioural problems. These indications of stress often start with insomnia or just problems getting to sleep and waking up unrefreshed. However, feeling constantly dog-tired has a knock-on effect on our emotions – we tend to get more emotional, but usually in a negative way. Often this means over-reacting, like snapping at someone who has posed a perfectly sensible question.

This sort of response can lead to the sufferer shunning society. Self-pity, isolation, loss of job and depression can soon follow.

So, you have to learn how to get off that slippery slope, the downward spiral of everyday stress. The place to begin is the mind. You need to learn how to recognize when ‘things are getting on top of you’ and learn how to unwind.

There are a number of successful techniques including meditation, breathing exercises, aromatherapy and playing soothing music in order to bring about a condition of relaxation in your mind.

While you are learning to take the symptoms of stress head-on with your mind, take some time to pamper your body as well. There are also numerous ways of doing this, but well-liked methods are taking a sauna or having a massage or pedicure, facial or manicure. Having your hair done.

Physical exercise is a good reliever of stress too and it does not have to be rigorous. A thirty minute walk, twice a day is sufficient for most people, but you might get to like it and then it is the more the better.

Finally, you could take a good look at your diet. You do not have to go overboard, but do you drink too much coke, coffee or tea? Do you consume a lot of rubbish? Are you eating enough fruit?

April 27th, 2011Treating Acne At Home

Acne is a very distressing condition. Individuals are so aware of their looks and acne does not help in the ‘good looks department’. What is even worse is that most sufferers of acne are fairly young – teenagers, in fact – and are not best equipped emotionally to be different from their peers and are especially not equipped to become spottier than others.

Not that acne is the same as having a couple of spots every now and again, which can happen to you all through your life. Acne is a precise condition, but it does occur usually in teenagers during puberty. Usually, acne disappears when adulthood appears or shortly thereafter.

Many teenagers and their families spend a huge sum of money on acne cures, but is there another manner of lessening the effects of acne? It certainly is very dubious that it can be ‘cured’ like chicken pox. It is rather an ‘illness’ like a cold or the flu, it has to run its course.

If you have a difficulty with acne, it is because your body is making more oil than your skin can let escape quickly, so it forms a little ‘volcano’ and erupts, when the pressure is high enough. Let us take a look at why this happens.

Firstly, you have to wash on a regular basis. Now I am certain that you do that already, but do not be tempted to wash too often. Over washing does not help, because the skin needs some oil on it to remain supple. If you keep sanitizing that ‘natural moisturizer’ off, your body will only make more to replace it.

Therefore, wash as anyone one else would, but not more frequently and do not use perfumed soap. You might be allergic and you do not need more possibilities to cloud the subject.

Your hair and your hands also carry a certain amount of oil for the same reason, so keep them off your face. Your hair and your hands are oily and dust and pollution stick to them. If they touch your face, you are risking clogging up more pores with oily debris and thus worsening your acne issue.

Tie your hair back if it is long and use a handkerchief if you need to touch your face. Other things that come in everyday contact with your face that could become oily and dirty are pillow cases and towels. Therefore, shower before going to bed and use clean pillowcases each night.

As far as towels go, just use your own. Change it each day and if you require a towel outside your home, either carry your own or far better, use paper towels and do not rub, but dab your face dry.

There are specialist creams you can use to replace soap, but some of them are very harsh, which could trigger an excessive production of oil again. Just keep in mind that you have to let acne run its course, but you do not have to exacerbate it either.

April 27th, 2011Chronic Headaches

Most people who only get headaches very infrequently perhaps do not realize that there are different types of headache. Different sorts of headaches affect different parts of the head and even headaches that affect the same area last different lengths of time. The ones that last the longest, giving almost constant pain, are known as chronic headaches.

Chronic headaches can be like episodic migraine – a throbbing in the temples – but unlike episodic migraine, chronic headaches can go on for days, weeks, months and even years. One of the causes of chronic headaches is stress.

One of the features of these headaches is that the stress can increase in a vicious circle. That is, stress brings on the headache, then you worry about the headache which causes more stress, which creates more pain and so on. This is a very difficult cycle of events for some people to break out of.

You can even bring on a stress-related chronic headache by worrying that you might get a headache. It is very depressing, because it seems that you just cannot win.

Sufferers of chronic headaches have a miserable time of it and normally make life miserable for everyone near them as well. Therefore, if you are in continuous pain, do something about it.

The first thing to try is to discover the reason for your stress or anxiety. Something is triggering your headaches and you almost certainly know what it is.

You have to scrutinize your life and find out what is so upsetting about it. Is it your spouse, your career, your neighbours or your kids? Is it an illness of yours or a close friend or member of the family? Money and debts? It could be a blend of several causes, in which case, you will have to de-stress them one by one.

This is the only sure method of dealing with chronic headaches that are caused by stress. You can take tablets to kill the pain and tablets to put you to sleep and tablets to calm you down, but in the long term, you know that they are not actually helping and that knowledge will stress you out even more.

Other types of chronic headaches are chronic cluster headaches and chronic tension headaches. Episodic cluster headaches will occur every now and again, but chronic cluster headaches come about several times a day for years. Somewhere between 10% an 15% of sufferers of cluster headaches get chronic symptoms.

There are various names for chronic cluster headaches depending on the gravity of the pain.

An episodic tension headache is the most common kind of headache. Everyone gets them from time to time, but a chronic tension headache is when you get periods of pain lasting for at least 15 days in a three month period.

If you suffer from chronic headaches, do not just take medication or do not just sit it out. You require professional advice once you think that you have a problem. You could strive to tackle it alone by taking up a sport or yoga to reduce your stress and tension, but it actually is better for you to tackle the difficulty of chronic headaches with the support of a professional.

April 26th, 2011Plus Size Clothing

The clothing industry is absolutely massive and is certainly one of the biggest industries in the world employing millions of people, especially in Asia. Imagine the number of factory workers and sales people and all the hauliers in between who are working in the textile industry. Possibly only the food industry is larger.

In spite of all those people and all that money, there is not really a lot of money to be made from selling ordinary, everyday clothing. Just look at how cheap a T-shirt can be and it has most likely been made and transported from somewhere like Thailand – half a world away. A retailer has to sell a great deal of this stuff to make a living.

The big money in the clothing industry comes from unusual clothing. That is specialized garments and by ‘specialized garments’, here I am including high fashion, haute couture and designer clothing. People, particularly women, like to keep up with the latest styles and in the realm of fashion a small fold here or a slight tuck there is all it takes to demonstrate that one skirt is this year’s fashion and that that one is last year’s.

Plus size clothing is an unusual case. Plus size clothing is expensive, but it was not fashionable for a long, long time. Manufacturers seemed to believe for decades that plus size women were happy to wear black or garish colours. They seemed to think that plus sizers were not interested in fashion. Often the plus size department would be dumped next to the maternity department and not in the fashion section.

Even though the state of affairs is getting better for the plus size woman, the fabrics and the colours used in plus size clothing still tend to be different from those used for the sizes ten and twelve.

The colours are often gaudier and the design tends to make plus size women look older particularly when they are wearing formal evening wear.

The other option is to go to specialist plus size clothing shops, but this is where they get you again. Specialized fashion translates into very expensive, so very few large women can afford to buy their wardrobe from these stores.

A good question to ponder upon is this: if there is a crisis of obesity in the western world in general, why does the fashion industry focus on smaller, often younger, women? Older, often heavier, women have more money that their younger counterparts too.

It is true that the situation is getting better on the fashion front for plus sizers and people are also attempting to lose weight, so maybe the two sides will slowly approach one another.

In the meanwhile, larger ladies have to find a method of making the world’s manufacturers of ladies clothing realize that they desire fashionable plus size clothing made in exactly the same style, from exactly the same material and in exactly the same colours as the clothing that they manufacture for smaller women.

The post Second World War years were an age of affluence for numerous countries, but particularly the United States because their plant and infrastructure was undamaged and they earned a lot of money furnishing the products the remainder of the world required to rebuild their countries.

America was working flat-out in the Fifties and early Sixties and wages and national prosperity kept rising. A similar feeling of goodwill was evident in numerous other countries, but it was relief that the war was over and gratefulness that their lives and cities were being rebuilt. This feeling of international joy and plentiful employment also led to a boom in babies.

The so-called Baby Boomers were being born in their millions into a joyful time where money and employment was everywhere to be had. Education was seized upon not just by these youngsters but also by numerous returning service men and women, who wanted to take a bigger function in that bright new world that was stretching out before them.

With a better education and the mood of liberation that the ending of the War brought about, the Civil Rights Movement started to thrive particularly in America were non-Caucasians were still being segregated.

Although it was not called Apartheid, segregation is just the English word for the same concept and masses of people were starting to find it insufferable and not just non-Whites either.

Individuals after the War were far less respectful of Authority, Governments and the Old Ruling Orders for several factors. It was these individuals who got us all into wars in the first instance and it was these people who were denying Civil Rights. Even if they did not condone segregation they did not do much to abolish it.

As Marx or Engels said, nobody gives up power, it has to be seized.

The people alive in the Fifties and Sixties were unlike any generation that had ever preceded them. They had money, education, a healthy disrespect for authority and a higher percentage of individuals who had been abroad than ever before in history.

Even if they were bearing guns at the time. This was a heady cocktail and civil disobedience raged all across the world from America to Europe to Thailand in the Sixties and Seventies.

The new order expressed itself in music and rock and roll was its name. At no point in time before had youngsters had their own music and they had the technology to reproduce it cheaply, the freedom to transmit it and the money to buy it. A whole new industry was started in the Fifties – record labels aimed at kids.

Now that the Baby Boomers are getting old, they are breaking other norms as well. Boomers are inquiring why the are expected to feel old at sixty-five and quit work. At sixty-five these days people often still have twenty years left to live and if the past is anything to go by, they will not merely roll over and die on this one either.

If you are going to be looking after children either your own or other people’s, you will naturally need some apparatus. Your training will have taught you what you are required to have by law, items such as safety apparatus, cots, high-chairs and strollers, but you will also need some toys. Which ones though, there are so such a lot and they are not cheap either?

Well, the first thing to consider is the age range of the children that you will have under your care. I am certain that your training will have already taught you that babies have different requirements from toddlers and so on up the age scale. Babies cannot move about (or not much) so they need to have their toys near at hand.

Having said that, babies are not even very dexterous with their hands. They only seem to want to stuff items into their mouths with them, so the safest options for babies are visually and aurally stimulating toys that will neither choke nor poison them. Twirling mobiles, colourful rattles, an attractive blanket, wallpaper with pictures of animals like Beatrix Potters menagerie of rabbits, foxes and ducks.

It is almost certainly better if you do not supply any toys that are going to be sucked and then passed around other children for fear of cross-infection. Let their parents provide the babies’ own cuddly toys and teddy bears et cetera. You may like to advise parents not to purchase babies’ toys which come apart easily or have buttons or loose eyes because of the risk of choking.

In the next age bracket, the struggling toddler, kids are starting to become inquisitive and are ‘into everything’. They still like to put everything in their mouths though, so the same warnings apply as before, but the toys can and should be more challenging. Books with a thin storyline and big pictures are fairly useful as are fish tanks that are safely out of reach. Children love to watch a busy fish tank and it is better than TV.

Building blocks and even the babies’ form of Lego can be introduced at this age although the toddlers are still a little young for them. Toddlers will start to become attached to favourite toys and like to carry them around with them at this age, so soft balls, dolls, rattles, and educational toys suitable for the age group are good.

After about eighteen months, educational toys like blocks and Lego (or Duplo) are even more important, so are books, but children of this age like to bang things and create a noise as well. A plinky-plonky instrument like a toy xylophone or a plastic piano are good for fulfilling these needs.

After about two years of age, children start to play with other children and Wendy Houses and toy tea sets are good for encouraging this. They will also like to move about and drive toy cars and tricycles. Children should be encouraged to play in a safe outdoor environment now too, if the weather is appropriate. Low-level swings and slides are fun as is a sand pit, if you can keep the local cats from using it as a public lavatory.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on a variety of topics, but is now concerned with Lego Keyrings. If you would like to know more, please visit our website at Lego UK.

The brain is a little like an engine, it deteriorates more quickly through lack of use than regular use. There is nothing wrong with taking a bit of time out to merely sit and think, in fact this mild form of meditation is to be encouraged in our fast-moving world of hustle and bustle, but there is also a need for puzzles and educational toys that arouse the brain while still being quiet.

Puzzles and educational toys can actually be divided into two age groups – generally speaking: adult and children’s games, although just where you draw the line between these age groups depends on the ability of the child. A bright child can start playing chess at eight, nine or ten, whereas that same child might not have a strong enough vocabulary to do crosswords until it is a teenager.

So, if you want to provide adequate stimulation for a child, you could start off with baby Lego and keep adding to the set until the child finds it no longer stimulating (that is, no longer interesting) which could easily take ten years. There is also Meccano, which is for a slightly older age group than Lego, but overlaps fairly considerably. Fascination with Meccano can also last ten years.

Meanwhile, you could bring in draughts (checkers) and chess. You will have to decide whether Chess is too much for your child at the moment, in which case you can carry on with draughts and reintroduce Chess a year later. As the child grows into a teenager, the line blurs and teenagers may prefer adult games to children’s games.

Adult puzzles and educational toys are quite varied. Most hobbies could be called educational in some way or another, although for the purpose of this piece, I will stick with adult puzzles and educational toys that can be played sitting down, say on a regular journey into work or during the lunch break.

There is the Rubik Cube and many variations on the theme. Plenty of people find that struggling to solve the Rubik Cube whilst struggling with a difficulty, assists them solve the difficulty. Some say that this works by diversion.

Crossword puzzles are very good for distraction and will help keep words that you do not use frequently on the tip of your tongue. Some people say that you ought not not look words up, but I do not agree. If you look a word up in the dictionary a few of times, you will remember it and that must do you some good.

Sudoku is a numbers game which is also played in a square like a crossword puzzle. Sudoku puzzles are rated on difficulty from one to five. One is too easy, whilst five is very hard. They take a certain amount of lateral thinking and deduction to solve. They are very good because like a crossword, you can pick them up for ten minutes and put them down again.

If you like Chess or Bridge, these puzzles are also very useful for improving your game or merely helping you to maintain a degree of skill if you do not play so much any more. Crossword puzzles, Sudoku, Chess and Bridge puzzles can all be found in many of the quality newspapers, so you can keep up with the news and invigorate your mind with puzzles and educational toys at the same time by purchasing a good newspaper.

April 9th, 2011Natural Sight Improvement

Losing one’s vision can get upsetting. In the beginning, if as standard, you begin to lose your vision at around 40 years of age, it is the first sign of approaching old age, but later as it deteriorates further, individuals begin to worry whether they will go blind.

Well, if you require spectacles at 40 then yes, it is the first sign of approaching old age, but there are not so many individuals who go totally blind now due to advancements in information concerning the eyes and how to treat impairments.

There is nothing you can do about the former difficulty, but at least two avenues you can take to sorting out the latter.

Most individuals ‘blindly’ follow their opticians advice and purchase spectacles or contact lenses. This is the best choice for the optician and the cheapest option for the client in the short term. It is good for the optician because you will almost certainly need new specs every two years and contact wearers have to keep buying contact lenses as well.

It is good for the customer because the cost is small if you do not go for designer frames like Gucci or Levi. In the long term, though the customer pays out many, many times more than if a different course of action had been chosen.

One of these other courses of action is Lasik surgery. This is expensive up front, but can last for 20 years although you might still need spectacles for either long or short distances. Most individuals have their long distance sight corrected and never ever have a problem with it again, although they do still need reading glasses.

A third option, which you might like to attempt instead of or in conjunction with any of the above is called Natural Vision Improvement. It has to be said that the system of Natural Vision Improvement has more detractors than supporters, but some individuals treat it as a form of yoga for the eyes which cannot do any harm.

The point here though is that if you would like to attempt Natural Vision Improvement, you should still go to an optician regularly so that they can check for eye diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration, which Natural Vision Improvement cannot hope to, nor does it claim to, cure.

Proponents of Natural Vision Improvement say that contemporary apparatus like TV screens and monitors and even living in a city where long distance eyesight is almost unnecessary because it is blocked by buildings a few yards away, have trained us to ‘see badly’.

They say that we need to relearn how to see in the right manner. They even go as far as to say that glasses and contact lenses may be part of the problem.

Here they mean that as your eyes become used to corrective lenses, they come to rely on them and so become weaker. Therefore, the next time your eyesight is measured, you will need more powerful glasses.

The Natural Vision Improvement philosophy says to use the weakest lenses that you can and make your eyes work harder. In this manner, they insist, the next time you go for a check up, you can get weaker lenses not more powerful ones until eventually you do not need glasses at all.

Some opticians and optometrists will work with you if you want to attempt this path, but you may have to look about for one. One vital point around the Natural Vision Improvement procedure is that if your impaired vision could create a danger to yourself and others, you should wear regular, full-strength glasses whilst carrying out those activities (like driving).

In the first part of this mini-series on how to make money buying and selling used cars in the current financial conditions, we examined which kind of person is suitable to set up a used car business. In this section, we will look at where to actually establish your used car business.

So, how do you go about setting up your own used car business? The first thing to comprehend is that no matter whether you are establishing a part-time or full-time business, your customers and the government will expect you to conduct yourself and conduct your business in a professional manner and they have every right to do so.

If you do not conduct yourself appropriately, you will present a bad impression to your customers and get a bad name with them and you will get a bad standing with the taxation authorities and maybe the health and safety people too and be beleaguered by them with more that the average number of check-ups.

Decide what your most important market is. Do you want to specialize in used luxurious cars, middle-market or cheap vehicles? Or do you want to sell trucks, vans, buses or motorbikes? It is helpful to specialize, if your catchment area is big enough. For instance, if you live in a village miles from anywhere, it might not be worth specializing in second-hand buses, but second-hand farm gear could be a hit.

Pay a lot of attention to the location of your business. If you propose to sell one or two cars from adverts, this is not quite so important, but if you have ideas for the future, you might want to get a small plot that you can expand on later.

This lot should be in a highly visible location, say beside the highway that runs into town. If your location is less than ideal, you will have to spend a lot more on advertising, which is something to keep in mind, when trying to work out what you can afford to pay for the plot.

Another important issue to bear in mind before signing any contracts, leases or mortgages, is to find out whether you are allowed to start a used car business in that location. Some countries have a highly complex set of rules and regulations governing which types of business can be located where. This is frequently called ‘zoning’. Sometimes you can get a ‘zoning variance’, but not every time.

Once you have your site and have chosen what type of used vehicles you want to specialize in, you should concentrate on establishing a unique corporate image – one that is instantly recognizable to local people as denoting your business. Use a motto, an emblem or a motif or a permutation of these, put up a sign and sign-write your van or tow-truck with them as well.

In the following part of this mini series, we will be looking at how to buy in your stock in trade – your vehicles.

A low interest debt consolidation loan is a loan that helps a person reduce his debt repayments by lumping all debts into one, which might go on for longer, but which will demand lower repayment installments.

The downside is that occasionally the debt consolidation schemes may cause your total debt to go up by a few hundred dollars because of additional arrangement and cancellation charges. It will also mean that it will take longer to repay your debts.

These programmes will also add one-off-charges, management charges and interest, which is quite normal, but it can feel as if you are beginning all over again.

However, it is better to start again in the correct manner, knowing that the repayments are affordable than to struggle on with the fear that one day you will not be able to meet all your financial responsibilities.

It is also far simpler to pay one bill per month than many and, if the worst comes to the worst, it is far simpler to renegotiate a loan with one lender than it is with many.

Many a low interest debt consolidation loan necessitates collateral before approval is given for the loan. In this case, you want to be wary of what collateral is expected of you, since some loans might require that you put your home as collateral. If you cannot repay the debt, then the lender will repossess your home and put you out on the street.

Most people would not want to risk this, but, if you have other quality collateral, it might be in your best interest to take the gamble if it represents a good way out of debt.

A low interest debt consolidation loan has a rate of interest attached to it. This means that you will pay the interest rate and the monthly installment toward the amount you borrowed. The advantage of a low interest debt consolidation loan is that it offers a means to get out of debt. Therefore, you ought to look for a low interest debt consolidation loan that has a low rate of interest and low monthly repayments.

How should you go about looking for a low interest debt consolidation loan? To start with, you should avoid advertising ploys talking about low interest debt consolidation loans, since most of the scams are devised to suck in borrowers who are less knowledgeable about low interest debt consolidation loan measures.

So, once the low interest debt consolidation loan has been approved, you will observe that the rate of interest is higher than for regular loans. This is because you have already proved yourself to be a bad credit risk and they are hoping that you will be willing to pay for doing wrong. Therefore, instead of going on line and looking for a loan, you might want to check with the local banks first.

If the banks cannot provide you with a low interest debt consolidation loan, then ask for suggestions from family members and friends you have confidence in. You could also go to a Citizens’ Advice Bureau, if you do not want your friends to know that you are experiencing financial hardship.

Meditation has always been well-liked. Monks and yogis have enjoyed practicing it for thousands of years and students of the East, normally younger Western people seeking their way in life, have frequently practiced it as well. Monks of the east and the west have practiced meditation as a method of enlightenment, although most people associate Buddhist monks with the chief exponents of this form of study and introspection.

In order to meditate for a protracted period of time, you need to be seated comfortably otherwise you might be distracted by soreness or numbness. In the East, people sit in the Lotus position from a very early age right up to the day they die, so meditating in the Lotus position, that is with crossed legs, is perfectly usual – most people sit crossed-legged each day of their lives, but we do not in the West.

Therefore, when a Westerner wants to meditate, it is frequently better to use a cushion or a mat, as you would when doing yoga or palates. A meditation cushion is meant to help you preserve the correct posture, with a straight back, while keeping you comfortable. A meditation cushion might help novices at meditation get used to sitting for long periods of time without moving. It could be useful in helping to train children particularly.

The name frequently given to a meditation cushion is ‘zafu’. It is usually handmade and attractive, but it has the function of raising the sitter so that the knees slant downwards. This helps the sitter keep a straight back, which yogis believe is important to free the Kundalini which resides there.

Frequently this meditation cushion is credited with some repute, so some people put it on a mat known as a zabuton rather than place it directly on the floor.

Traditional meditation cushions are round and manufactured from cotton. There are many designs, but they are frequently fairly ornate. The stuffing for the cushion is usually natural kapok, cotton batting or buckwheat hulls. All of these natural fibres offer a quite stiff, yet comfortable support. Most meditation cushions have removable covers so that they can be laundered without making the stuffing wet.

There is some deviation in the diameter and thickness of these cushions so that the user can get one to suit his or her girth and weight, although the majority of cushions of this nature will improve anyone’s experience of their meditation sessions. The diameters range from roughly twenty to roughly forty centimetres and are roughly twenty centimetres in thickness.

These meditation cushions are undeniably an invention for the Western meditator as an Easterner would have no requirement for them, but having said that they can make your meditation session a lot more comfortable.
