June 19th, 2011Travelling By Train

During the last ten years there has been a return to train travel, especially in the United States. This might have something to do with nostalgia and romance, but most analysts put it down to a result of the in-flight bombing of Twin Towers on 9/11/2001.

The government’s and the airlines’ response to those acts of terrorism have resulted in enormous hikes in the degree of security at airports and quite rightly so, but travellers are also put off by the long queues and intrusive searches at airports. This problem is even worse at busy airports and during holiday periods such as when schools are closed.

Car travel is also an alternative, but then you have to do your own driving and that brings its own issues, especially if you are with children and especially if you are a single parent. Apart from that, travelling by train is a holiday in its own right. Your holiday starts the minute you put your bags in the rack and find your seat.

Once you have sat down, given the kids a colouring book and a can of soda, you can sit back, relax and just snooze or look out of the window at the scenery whizzing past. Most of your worries are over until you arrive at where you are going. Your kids cannot become lost or wander off and they are very safe from predators.

Furthermore, trains seats are usually much more roomy than the equivalent airline seats. Economy seats in a train are much more comfortable than economy seats in an airplane. You can also get up and walk about which makes long journeys much more comfortable.

The backdrop is also better from a train than a plane. After all, clouds are clouds are clouds, but you can see all sorts of things out of the window of a train. There are also sleeping and dining carriages to break up the journey, but there is normally also attendant service in your seat, if that is what you want. Simply push the button and someone will come to take your order.

Have you heard of the Orient Express, the Flying Scotsman or the Trans-Siberian Express? What romantic visions they conjure up. Modern trains may not have the nostalgia or the steam locomotives of the Thirties, but they are still fantastic to travel on.

You can book your seats on a train journey much the same as you would on a plane, which means that if you stand up to go to the bathroom or dining carriage, your seat will still be unoccupied when you get back. This is a huge plus point, because it is annoying when someone takes your seat.

The next time that you make a decision to go away, think again about travelling by train. You can leave your car at the station or you can even take it with you on the train, if you like. You will not regret having given the rail network a chance, because the likelihood are that you have forgotten how handy and inexpensive they are.

Mosquitoes live in most regions of the world. They are born into water, yet it does not have to be much, where they spend about two weeks developing through the stages of egg, larva and pupa. As an adult, they live for up to another eight weeks.

The mouth parts of mosquitoes have evolved to be specialized in piercing ‘skin’ and drawing out juices. Males use this talent for removing juices from plants, yet females require a blood meal to be able to produce eggs and of the 3,500 species of mosquito worldwide, some species feed on humans.

This trait means that the female mosquito of certain species can be the carrier of several infectious diseases. These diseases affect and kill millions of individuals every year. Two of these diseases are malaria and dengue fever

Malaria is brought about by a mosquito infected with eukaryotic protists of the genus Plasmodium biting humans (and one sortnd of monkey). The disease is common throughout Africa, the Americas and Asia but it was eradicated from Australia in 1981. Europe used to be infected as well but is now largely clean of malaria, although not of mosquitoes.

The disease is brought about by the duplication of the malarial parasites in the red blood cells which creates symptoms comparable to headaches and fever – something like a bad case of the flu. In acute cases, this can lead to coma and death.

Prevention is much better than cure, so the first thing to do is endeavor to prevent mosquitoes breeding by eradicating unnecessary amounts of water no matter how small and how brackish. Secondly, strive to prevent them biting you by using mosquito repellent and mosquito nets treated with pesticide.

There is no long-lasting vaccine that will prevent you getting malaria, although there are drugs available to stop travellers getting malaria in the short time. Most types of malaria can be treated successfully, although there is evidence of resistance to a number of of the anti-malarial drugs.

Dengue Fever is also carried by certain mosquitoes. The symptoms of dengue vary but they almost always include a headache and a skin rash and occasionally joint pain. The disease is not usually fatal, yet it can be so when it develops into dengue haemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome (where blood pressure drops very low resulting in organs to malfunction).

There are four types of dengue fever. Having had the one, the patient has lifelong immunity to that strain, yet merely temporary immunity from the other three. As with malaria there is no vaccine against dengue. The only attack is to reduce the number of mosquitoes and the number of bites.

Whereas the incidence of infection with malaria is falling, the incidence of infection by dengue is rising. Dengue is now endemic in more than 110 countries. It normally takes 4-7 days for the disease to present itself after infection, so any flu-like symptoms showing within a week of returning from an region known to have dengue should be treated gravely, especially as many GP’s in the west may overlook the real source of the problem.

The generations alive now, especially in the Developed world, are all au fait with speaker technology to a certain level. Most individuals began purchasing music centres in the Seventies if they were old enough and that trend has carried on and the technology has got better and better.

Acoustic reproduction has come on in leaps and bounds since the Fifties and Sixties when most people were content with a mono Dansette record player. My father was still listening to his favourite 78′s on a wind-up record player with a pin for a needle and a trumpet for a loudspeaker in the early Sixties. Then he bought a Dansette later in the Sixties.

I purchased a Sanyo music centre in the Seventies and he followed suit. The quality of acoustic reproduction on those systems was laughable in comparison with what is on the market these days.

The latest development is surround sound, which was only accessible in the cinema twenty years ago, but surround sound speakers are a lot better now than they were then and you can fit them at home without requiring a supplemental mortgage advance.

Often surround sound speakers are associated with film scores, so a surround sound speaker system could be fitted to the outline jacks on your TV or home theatre system.

Home theatres are very much in vogue now that lots of people are having to stay in more frequently to save money. A small family that likes to go to the pictures once a week can recoup the costs of a good home theatre system within a year.

When looking at surround sound speakers, you may think that the cost is high, but do not forget that it is the surround sound speakers that transform a film into a cinematographic experience. They also last forever if not abused.

Two tips: get the best that you can afford and buy speakers that will stand on the floor or can be hung on the wall.

Purchase quality rather than quantity. If you can just afford two speakers of great quality, so be it, You can buy another one later. With surround sound, the rule is: the more speakers the better.

Three is the absolute minimum, seven is fine, but eight is much better. The more speakers that you have, the less volume you will have to pump through them so the longer they will last.

The above configurations will be written as: 2:1 (stereo plus a sub-woofer); 6:1 (front and back stereo speakers, a front central channel and a rear sub-woofer); 7:1 will add a rear central channel.

The good thing about this type of surround speaker system is that you can easily upgrade it, but you have to start properly by buying a recognized marque that will allow you to add speakers throughout the years.

One of the best speaker systems you can buy is Bose, but they are costly, but they are also the envy of any sound enthusiast as well. If you would like the best, but do not have the capital take your time creating a system of Bose surround sound speakers.

Without doubt just the most dedicated of entomologists and the most fervent followers of Buddha can truthfully say that they like mosquitoes. The others of us in the world hate them. The word ‘mosquito’ comes from either the Spanish or the Portuguese and means ‘little fly’. They live in most countries all over the world and are or have been responsible for spreading a range of diseases throughout history.

Malaria is the sickness most usually connected with mosquitoes and at one time malaria was widespread in Europe. Even London was a malarial city until they drained the marshes to create space for more housing a couple of hundred years ago. Until a hundred years ago, malaria was not thought to be associated with mosquitoes, it was considered to be brought on by ‘bad air’ (‘mal aria’).

Mosquitoes are blood-sucking insects, or at least the females are, that are still to blame for spreading many diseases throughout the animal kingdom. That is right! They do not only have an impact on humans. Dogs in particular get a fairly hard time from mosquitoes.

For a substantial part of their lives, mosquitoes happily drink nectar from flowers like bees do, but when the female is pregnant, she needs animal protein to produce eggs. This is what she obtains from us and other animals. The male never has to drink blood.

It is whilst the female is drawing a little blood, that an infected mosquito involuntarily puts a couple of parasites into the host’s blood stream, which could cause infection with malaria, dengue, encephalitis or many other diseases that are spread by parasites.

Not all bites from infected mosquitoes bring about sickness. In the case of malaria for instance, it has been suggested that a healthy person can fight off the parasites injected by up to fifty mosquitoes in a twenty-four hour period. After that though, the parasites grow in number too rapidly for our defences and reach the organs that they want to inhabit.

When a non-infected mosquito sucks blood from an infected human, that mosquito can pass the parasites on to other non-infected humans. It is thought that most mosquito bites happen indoors when the person is asleep. Therefore, the WHO and other agencies have been handing out mosquito nets treated with insecticide in Africa, where most victims of mosquito borne infections live.

However, there is a concern that treating the problem in this way may make some kinds of mosquito immune to the insecticide or may even raise the likelihood of being bitten outdoors. There have been comparable worries in Cambodia. Until recently, it took three days of hospitalization to cure a patient of malaria, but in one region of Cambodia it now takes five days.

Doctors treating patients in that region say that this is a very worrying development. It is thought that if this local development spreads, then it could result in the deaths of millions of Africans again.

Most mosquitoes do not fly far. Most mosquitoes never go farther than two kilometres from where they hatched out; some move only a few metres away, although others can fly some 5 or 10 kilometres, and a very few varieties will even fly up to 50 kilometres, helped by the wind, from their larval locations.

Owen Jones, the author of this article writes on several subjects, but is currently involved with work on mosquito bite treatment problems. If you would like to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at Mosquito Bite Swellings.

Camping is a very well-liked activity among the under Forties. People like to go hunting, fishing, hiking, walking or just camping with their friends, family or lover. The outdoors is attractive and can be romantic. Lots of people would like to get a little closer to nature and the easiest way of doing this is sleeping under canvas, or nylon or something man-made like that. Another advantage for the young is that it is inexpensive.

However, it is not just inexpensive, it is healthy and educational. All children should go camping either with their parents or the scouts in order to learn something of nature before they get locked into a job to pay the mortgage and forget that there is life outside the city. You know, there are inner city children that do not know that milk comes from cows? How ridiculous is that?

So, if you are going to take an education in nature by the horns, you will have to have some camping equipment. Inexpensive though camping equipment is relative to the equipment required for other activities, most people still have to be a bit careful how much they spend.

If you fall into that category, then this article is for you. Before we get into the nitty-gritty, it is worth pointing out that if you have the money, you can do worse than simply going down to the local sports shop or camping shop and buying all your equipment from them. Buy everything you require in one go and ask for a discount. if anything ever goes wrong they will remember you as a big spender and fix it for you right away.

However, the remainder of have to be a bit more careful with the cheque book. If you know a bit concerning camping equipment from your parents or from the scouts and do not mind second-hand, then car boot sales and garage sales can be just the ticket.

Frequently people are selling things because their kids have left home and they are having a clear out or perhaps they have had more children and the pup tent is no longer any use to them.

I sold a lovely tent not so long ago for peanuts because I knew that I would never need it again. The beauty of these sales is that you can put the tent up or get the seller to put it up for a closer inspection. Look for rot, sniff for mildew, check the number of pegs and guide lines et cetera, but do not get carried away with perfection, you can buy extra pegs, lanyard and a mallet, but you do not want to have to sew up holes or replace zips or fly screen.

Classified ads are another good source of equipment, but pick the device up yourself so that you know where to take it back if you do not have the opportunity to inspect it properly before handing over the money.

EBay and Amazon are also pretty decent, but you have to do some research on the manufacturers’ names and the normal retail prices otherwise you may end up buying an expensive copy, a kiddies’ toy tent or merely junk.

One of my favourite stores to browse is the Army and Navy Surplus store. Try going into an A&N and coming out empty-handed. If the equipment in there is good enough for our troops to risk their lives with, it’s decent enough for a week in the Poconos.

June 14th, 2011How Do Hybrid Cars Work?

Basically, hybrid electric cars have two engines: a conventional petrol or diesel engine (the same as you would find in any modern car and an electric, battery powered engine, as you may see in a milk float or a forklift truck. The magical difference is that the car’s on board computer judges which engine is necessary to provide the power needed by the driver and switches it on.

Therefore, if you are accelerating to cruising speed for motorway driving; going up hill or overtaking, the car will almost certainly use its liquid fuel engine but then as you ease off the accelerator to, say, cruise down the motorway; go down the other side of the hill or to drive in slow traffic, the computer will turn off the liquid fuel engine and turn on the electric engine.

The electric engine can be regarded as free to run, because it runs off batteries which are recharged by the car while it is using petrol or diesel and at some other times, such as whilst it is braking (and the alternators are recharging in both modes). You should never need to recharge your car’s batteries overnight as they do with forklift trucks.

There are basically two sorts of hybrid cars: the semi hybrids and the full hybrids.

The semi hybrids have the same sort of set up: two engines, one running on liquid fuel and the other running on batteries, but the electric motor is not capable of running the car on its own. It is there to ‘assist’ the petrol or diesel engine.

In this type of hybrid, the electric motor is known as an ‘assist’. These semi hybrids will save money on fuel, but whilst the car is moving, you are burning fuel all the time.

The main difference when it comes to the full hybrid is that both engines are capable of powering the car autonomously. Whilst you are running on electricity, you are running at zero expense to your wallet and at zero expense to the environment, unless you are actually pushing the car and then both engines might be working in union.

This switching of power sources is done robotically without any intrusion from the driver. In the case of the Prius, for example, this extraordinary achievement is accomplished by what Ford calls its Hybrid Synergy Drive. Other businesses have their equivalent to the HSD.

In order to get the most out of these full hybrids, you actually have to be doing an ‘average amount’ of driving under ‘average’ or ‘mixed’ conditions. For example, if you are driving in traffic, the car will try to use the electric engine, but if all you do is drive in inner city traffic jams the batteries will soon become exhausted and you will be driving on liquid fuel all the time, which sort of negates the foremost reason for spending a lot extra on a hybrid in the first place.

The car needs to travel on open motorways in order to recharge its batteries so that it can use them when it gets back into town. If you only drive in town traffic, you might be better off getting a small run about instead.

Mosquitoes, those tiny insects that make us uncomfortable, could also lay us open to malaria, dengue and chikungunya. They live in damp areas and reproduce in water.

The life cycle of this bug begins in holes filled with water, tide water pools in salt marshes, sewage effluent ponds, irrigated pastures and rain water ponds.

The four main types of mosquitoes, namely Aedes, Anopheles, Culex, and Culiseta, each have their own distinctive environmental requirements and this helps us to identify a particular species also.

It is best to note that all mosquitoes have four distinctive phases, namely the egg, larva, pupa and adult stages, in their life cycle. The eggs are laid on water or on damp surfaces and float on them. In addition, species like Culex and Culiseta lay eggs of 100 or more that are discovered stuck to each other in the fashion of a raft.

However, Anopheles mosquitoes lay their eggs on water and Aedes are known to lay their eggs usually on damp ground. The eggs take two days to hatch and metamorphose into the larval stage.

The mosquito larvae, known popularly as wrigglers or wigglers, live in water for a period of a week or two depending on the temperature of the water. The larvae swim frequently to the surface of the water to take in oxygen with the aid of siphon tunes.

However, species like the Anopheles have no such mechanism and generally breathe by lying flat on the water. It is interesting to note that mosquito larvae shed their skin four times and after the fourth stage they metamorphose into pupae.

Mosquito pupae, commonly called “tumblers”, live in water for from one to four days depending largely on the species and temperature. In this stage, known as the resting and non-eating stage in the life cycle, the insect can be seen lying on the surface of water.

In this phase it breathes through its two breathing tubes called trumpets. This is the vital and last stage before the mosquito changes into an adult and begins spreading infection. Once the development is over, the pupa opens and the adult comes out.

Once the adult mosquito is formed, it waits on the surface of the water for its skin to dry and harden. After a while, the mosquito is able to spread its wings and fly. It is interesting to remember that adult female mosquitoes are more aggressive than the males that feed just on the nectar of flowers.

Aedes female mosquitoes are known for their sore and enduring bites particularly during the daytime and they attack mostly humans. The Culex specie is similar to Aedes, However they are known to attack after dusk and have a preference for domestic and wild birds. They transmit encephalitis and sleeping sickness.

The Culiseta species of mosquito is a moderately aggressive biter that strikes during the evening hours and in the shade. Anopheles mosquitoes are known for spreading malaria in humans.

Ultimately, it is a good idea to know that most female mosquitoes have to feed on an animal before they can produce eggs, with some dying before laying viable eggs.

Furthermore, some species live near their breeding place while others fly as far as 100 miles from their breeding spot. Male mosquitoes have a shorter life span than female mosquitoes.

Owen Jones writes articles on several subjects, but is now concerned with Hand Held Insect Killer devices and static units at Electronic Insect Killers.

Malaria, a mosquito-borne disease caused by mosquito bites that carry a parasite of the genus Plasmodium, is widely common in tropical and subtropical countries in Asia, South and Central America and the Middle East. Malaria is more prevalent in regions with lots of rainfall and constant high temperatures that supply the perfect conditions for bugs to thrive and multiply.

Malarial bouts start with multiplication of the plasmodium virus in the red blood cells and could have long-lasting and even fatal effects.

Malaria begins with headaches, fever and chills and could, in later stages, also lead to coma. Malaria has 3 stages, the first stage beginning with fever, shivering, joint pain, vomiting, anemia, hemoglobinuria, retinal injury and fits.

This could happen for 4 to 6 hours every alternate day, every three days or might happen every four days. As the disease progresses into the second stage, one could experience feelings of heat and dryness, while the third stage could result in extreme fatigue and weakness.

It is however worth noting that the first indications occur about 10 to 15 days after the mosquito bite when it multiplies and bursts the red blood cells.

The effects of malaria especially in children must not be overlooked because a bite from this insect can lead to high intracranial pressure that becomes evident as unusual posture caused by acute brain damage.

Malaria caused by mosquito bites could lead to other serious consequences like cognitive impairment, widespread anaemia and neurological damage with cerebral malaria. Cerebral malaria could cause retinal whitening that is the most distinguishing clinical sign of malaria.

Malaria caused by mosquitoes could in severe cases show up as an enlarged spleen, chronic headache, clots of blood in the brain, inflamed liver, low blood sugar and hemoglobinuria which could lead to renal failure.

Other significant side effects caused by this mosquito bite disease could be dehydration, liver or kidney failure and breathing issues caused by fluid in the lungs.

Rupture of the spleen might lead to internal bleeding with the spread of infection leading to inflammation of the meninges, or membranes, that enclose the brain and spinal cord.

The control of malaria starts with the use of mosquito nets, the use of insect repellents and the spraying of insecticides in places where mosquitoes could breed easily.

Home pest control begins with not having water standing about in buckets, tubs and the spraying of insecticides in drains which are ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Mosquito repellents could be chemical based or could also be in the form of herbal or biological pest control with the planting of mosquito repellent plants in the environment.

It is best to note that one way of pest control lies in protecting oneself from mosquito bites by avoiding going out at dawn and dusk. It pays to have mosquito mesh on all the doors and windows at home. Avoiding wearing dark colors and opting for long sleeved shirts and long trousers would also help.

Pest control includes using repellents like creams, lotions and electronic devices. It is best to kill mosquitoes by spraying insecticides, but this ought to be done some time before entering the room. Last but not least, avoiding mosquito bites is the most effective pest control every time.

Owen Jones writes pieces on various topics, but is currently involved with Hand Held Insect Killer devices and static units at Electronic Insect Killers.

June 11th, 2011RV Safety Tools

A family journey in an RV or ‘recreational vehicle’ can be great fun, and one of the ways that you can try to make sure that it goes well, is to plan for as many eventualities as possible. This involves taking a few safety items or safety tools that are helpful for an RV trip.

If you are travelling far from the beaten track, then adequate supplies of food and water are the prime concerns obviously. You will also need adequate suitable clothing for the season of the year and the place you are travelling in.

However, remember, that some regions are chilly at night no matter what season of the year it is, so a couple of jumpers or light jackets will come in useful if you are driving in the mountains, in the north (in the northern hemisphere) or along the coast.

Once you have the prerequisites to survive, there are a few luxury safety devices, that you might find practical. The first of these is the mobile phone. There may or might not be sufficient coverage where you are going, but the chances are that it will work somewhere near, if you need to use it. Be certain that you have a charger that works in the RV and a hands free kit if possible.

The luxury of all luxuries is a GPS unit – Global Positioning System – so that you do not become too lost, if you are out in the boondocks or even in some large, unknown metropolis searching for the hotel you booked into over the Internet for a few days break from the road.

If you are renting your RV, there is almost certainly a GPS system on board, but if you are taking your own vehicle, you might consider purchasing a mobile phone that also has GPS built into it. These hand held devices are plenty accurate to steer you back on track.

However, they are electrical devices and as such can break down at any moment, especially when you especially require them, so make sure that you have a current road map as well.

Whilst you are on vacation, the weather is quite important – in fact it can make or break a holiday, so why not take a portable weather radio with you? A weather radio is exactly what it implies. It is a radio that specializes in picking up weather transmissions – especially local ones.

This is very handy indeed, especially if where you are heading is not undergoing the type of weather you are looking for. It allows you to modify your destination without having to be there first. These useful devices often come with other tools built in like a torch and a timer (alarm clock).

Make sure that your RV has an adequate set of vehicle repair tools including gloves and safety goggles. Gloves are practical for keeping your hands clean if you have a repair to make and safety goggles come in very handy if you have to swap a wheel in a dust, rain or snow storm.

The last thing on our list, but not the least important, is a good First Aid Kit. When selecting a First Aid kit, comprehensive is definitely better than compact.

June 10th, 2011Finding Antique Car Shows

Are you interested in gorgeous old cars? Lots of individuals are and there are lots of antique car exhibitions in America and Europe to prove it. Antique car shows are a good way of viewing these old cars and standing up close to them. They are a fully working part of automotive history – many of them are a hundred years old and still working fine.

So, if you want to go to a show of ancient cars, how do you go about finding one? It depends on what you would like really, because there are basically two types of car show.

There is the permanent form, a sort of museum, usually a private collection which is open to the public like the one owned by the Marquis of Beaulieu, the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, the New Forest in the UK.

Then there are the rallies of antique car aficionados and owners like the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. There is a equivalent event organized by Louis-Vuitton which takes place at different European locations, but I last saw it at Portofino in northern Italy.

The museums tend to be open all the year round, but the rallies normally take place in the summer, because lots of the old cars were open topped and uncomfortable to drive in the rain and the cold.

The obvious place to begin searching for a collection or rally of antique cars in your area is on the Net, but there are also plenty of magazines on the subject full of great glossy pictures of old, unusual cars. These magazines will also carry notification of up and coming activities.

If you favour the personal touch, look up an antique, veteran or classic car club in your region and go along to their next meeting. You are certain to meet someone there who can advise you on the best up and coming rallies of old cars and the best collections or museums in and around your area.

Really, this is almost certainly your best option if you live in a city. You cannot beat the face to face approach for getting the best knowledge and seeing the enthusiasm in the eyes of the vintage car driver. It is infectious to talk with anyone who is passionate concerning their hobby.

If you still choose to look on the Net, one of the more personal methods of obtaining information about vintage car activities, is to sign up for some newsletters.

Simply do a general search on, say, ‘vintage car rallies’ or ‘vintage car museums’, visit a couple of sites and sign up for the newsletters of the sites that take your fancy.

In this fashion, you are certain to get advanced notification of all the top vintage car shows and you may even be given a coupon to save you money on the entrance fee too.

Andorra is a tiny principality in the eastern region of the Pyrenees Mountains which run across the border between France and Spain. It is a very mountainous country where they speak Catalan, Spanish, French and their own local dialect. English is widely understood if not spoken. The co-rulers of Andorra are the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell.

The people of Andorra have the second highest life expectancy in the world (82 years at birth). Although Andorra is not in the European Union, it uses the Euro because it is easier for everyone. Andorra is a very prosperous nation because it is a tax haven and its 85,000 inhabitants are hosts to more than 10,0000,0000 tourists a year.

Most of those tourists are skiers or are interested in skiing. So, it goes without saying that the quality of skiing in Andorra is of world class proportions. For those who are not interested in skiing, the views are breath-taking and the clean mountain air is a tonic, which makes Andorra popular with ramblers and hikers. If you are touring the area, you can visit France or Spain from Andorra within a number of hours, depending on the weather.

The skiing industry in Andorra has come a long way since the first ski lift was installed in 1956. Most of the skiing tourists come from France, Spain and Britain. Nowhere in the south of France can become considered cheap, but Andorra levies hardly any tax on goods so this reduces the costs quite a bit. Perfume, cigarettes and alcohol are especially cheap compared with its neighbours.

The largest skiing resort by far in Andorra is Grandvalira which has 193 ski slopes serviced by 66 ski lifts. Andorra in general and Grandvalira in particular has a reputation of being ideal for beginners and families. This is because a lot of the slopes are fairly gentle and the area specializes in ski schools and training. Grandvalira alone has seven separate training centres and over 450 qualified skiing instructors. Snowboarding is also taught at lots of these schools.

Vallnord is another of Andorra’s famous resorts. Vallnord has maybe a wider assortment of ski slopes than Grandvalira, since it also caters for the experienced skier. It is smaller than Grandvalira with just 50 different slopes and 30 ski lifts, but that helps give it a more intimate, isolated ambiance than its massive competitor.

There are also training schools at Vallnord and it is a centre from which you can sight-see and tour. If you want to ski, but also travel around, it is best not to take your own skis. You can travel by bus or by car, although you certainly ought to have some experience before driving through snowy mountains, where the weather can become treacherous at the blink of an eye.

If you travel by coach, you can hire skiing equipment and clothing wherever you make a decision to stop off. Nowhere is far from anywhere in Andorra as the whole principality covers less than 200 square miles, but the weather can get a hazard to drivers who are not used to mountain weather conditions.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on several topics, but is now involved with short ski breaks. If you would like to know more, please visit our website at Ski Package Holidays.

Modern auto navigation systems are really fantastic. Have you ever thought about getting one? People who do not have or have never had a modern auto navigation system, or GPS (Global Positioning System) as it is also known as. will almost certainly not know just how much knowledge they provide. It is no longer just a device to prevent you from getting lost while you are travelling from A to B.

Far from it. Modern GPS systems will tell you whether you are passing monuments, sites of historical importance or beauty, churches, hotels, restaurants, taverns, garages, petrol stations, airports and practically anything else that you would like it to inform you about. They have moved on from being only an on screen map to being a travel guide and much more..

If you are thinking about acquiring a GPS auto navigation system, it is worth learning a bit about how they work, so that you can better understand what they do, what they are capable of doing and how they do it. This is practical knowledge for when it comes to deciding which system to decide on, because not all GPS systems are the same and some offer more functions than others.

All car GPS navigation systems use satellites to help them determine their location. (This is not always true of ships, because some water ways use land-based tracking stations).

The GPS is like a radio receiver, so it picks up signals from overhead satellites and interprets that data in order to determine where it is. In order to do this job properly, it needs the signals from three satellites.

This is known as triangulation and is very accurate, frequently to within a metre or a yard. However, in order to make sure of even more accuracy, the data from a fourth satellite is used as a check. There is very little margin for error when four satellites are being used for pin-pointing a position.

A GPS device will tell you which way to go and if you go off route, it will advise you the best manner for getting back to the right road. However it will also do more than that. Before you begin out on your journey from A to B, you have to type in those two locations.

The GPS will then ask you whether you want to go by the quickest road, the most scenic route or whether you would like to avoid motorways altogether.

This is a great role, but it can do over that as well. If you type in the name of a restaurant along the fashion or a monument you would like to see, it will steer you from A to B via your place of interest.

One last item, be certain that the system that you purchase is upgradeable. Some are upgraded automatically, but you have to pay a monthly or annual fee. Others will sell you an upgrade which you have to install yourself. If you are at ease with making your own upgrades, all well and good, but just be aware that systematically upgrading the software is vital.

Bed bugs used to be a part of eveyone’s daily life before the Second World War – or should that be ‘a part of everyone’s nocturnal life’? For hundreds of years, people merely grinned and bore it; they had to because there were no effectual methods of getting rid of them.

They lived in the stored clothes, the furniture, the bedding and the houses of the rich and poor alike and because houses were located so close together, families were larger and people were in and out of each others houses, you could not wipe out a bed bug infestation for long.

Then came the bombing of European cities in the Second World War 1939-1945 and many inner cities were unsafe, so the authorities decided to take the opportunity to flatten the inner city slums and start again. An equivalent programme was began in America, but not because of devastation.

The authorities pulled down hundreds of millions of houses and made billions of rats, mice, bed bugs, fleas and other nasties homeless. In fact, rat poison and a new wonder insecticide, DDT, were used widely in the clean up. By the end of the Forties or during the Fifties, bed bugs were just about eradicated from the Western World.

The Baby Boomer generation was the first one never to have been bothered by bed bugs. This happy situation lasted until the mid-Nineties, when increased long haul travel and increased immigration permitted bed bugs to hitch lifts back to the West. These unwelcome hitch hikers usually returned on garments that had been packed away in suitcases.

And so here we are today, in a state of affairs where the West’s major inner cities have a bed bug problem of epidemic proportions. Bed bugs are being passed around from person to person on all types of public transport but particularly buses, trains and taxis and anywhere where individuals gather together, but especially hotels, cinemas and waiting rooms.

So, here are a few suggestions on how to avoid infesting your home with bed bugs. If you stop in hotels a couple of nights or one night at a time, merely unpack what you require to at any one time. In other words, live out of your suitcase.

If you are on a longer vacation, by all means, take out everything, but keep your suitcase closed and have all your clothes boil washed, dry cleaned or tumble-dried on ‘HOT’ before you repack them to go home.

If this cannot be done because of the sort of cloth, examine all the seams, hems, pockets, cuffs and collars and blow them with the hair-dryer on ‘HOT’. The hair-dryer is not anywhere near as effective, but all stages of a bed bug’s life cycle are killed by seven minutes exposure to temperatures above 45C or 115F.

If you cannot heat-treat your clothing before you leave the hotel, seal them up in plastic bags and treat them when you arrive home – preferably in a laundrette or dry cleaners.

What do you do about your overcoat, if you mix with people every day on the bus or at work? This is a difficult one. Bed bugs are resilient to all forms of insect killer, which is why we are experiencing this epidemic, so you will literally have to examine your overcoat every time you come home or get one that you can put in the tumble-dryer each night.

One bed bug can lay 300 eggs and go for a year without feeding, so you cannot know that you have not got bed bugs, you can merely say that you have not seen any – yet.

XM Radio is one of the two major American satellite radio broadcasters. They broadcast over 150 programmes of all types like sports, traffic, weather, music of all decades and comedy.

The principal area of their broadcasting activities though is music. After all, that is what most people like to listen to whilst they are driving or working at home or in the yard.

The music of XM Radio is wide-ranging, catering for the requirements of every music ever recorded. For example, of the sixty-eight music channels, there are channels that play music from only one decade: from the Forties to the Noughties!

Then, transversing those barriers of time, there are music channels that only play Rock and Roll or only play Bee Bop or only play the Blues. There are also channels that only play new records.

There are others that only transmit film soundtracks. In fact, XM music radio has most bases covered. There are even channels that play the music that is being played live in clubs such as the ‘B.B. King Club’ in New York City! The ‘Blue Note Club’ is there as well! In fact, the world of music is your oyster.

Then, on a different level, there are the leisure shows hosted by people like Snoop Dog and comedy shows with artists such as Opie and Anthony. There is family comedy too and Playboy Radio for the adult members of the family, although Playboy Radio films do not have to be censored.

Sports fans will get pleasure from the dedicated sports channels. XM Radio’s sports channels cover such sports as American football, basketball and baseball on a regular basis, although there are international sports featured for the more out-going as well: worldwide, International sports like soccer, the most popular participation sport in the world.

In fact, there are currently thirty-eight sports channels in XM’s repetoire, although by the time you read this, there will probably be three or four times that amount. Many service providers are flocking to Xm’s service in order to gain nationwide coverage in the United States.

News channels are there as well. Channels like the world-respected BBC World Service, CNBC, Fox, the controversial C-Span, CNN, the Discovery Channel, NASCAR Racing, E-Entertainment and many more.

If you require equipment to receive this interesting new technology, you can easily find it on the Internet or in your local shopping mall. The cost of the equipment will not break the bank, but it is best if you price it up and then wait a week or two because new ‘special offers’ are coming out all the time.

The best way to get XM Satellite Radio for today’s best price is to wait and look which way the wind is blowing, in a short while you will get this illustrious satellite broadcaster for a knock-down price.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a range of topics, but is currently concerned with Bose Radioss. If you would like to kcurrently more, please go to our website at Bose Digital Radio.

Satellite radio has certainly taken off. It is extremely popular for two or three main reasons such as quality, content and availability. In the perspective of satellite radio, quality refers to the quality of sound that is capable of being reproduced by the equipment because of the signal; content refers to the kinds of programmes being broadcast by the various radio channels or stations and availability refers to the footprint or coverage of the satellite, that is how much area of land receives the signal from the satellite.

All these comparisons are made with terrestrial radio broadcasts of course. For example, we all know that standard AM or FM stations differ greatly in quality, the content can be heavily interspersed with advertising, jingles and mindless chatter and coverage is usually only on a extremely localized basis.

The two big players in the American satellite radio market are of course Sirius and XM and each one is attempting to out do the other in these three areas

Normally, satellite radio produces a quality of sound which is equivalent to CD quality. This is extremely high, particularly if you use decent quality equipment to replay the signal received. If you merely replay satellite radio through tinny, ancient, blown speakers, then you will hardly benefit from this boost in quality at all.

Quality, content and coverage have all played a role in increasing the popularity of satellite radio, but it is probably content which has played the greatest part.

You may be wondering why anyone would want to pay for subscription radio, when there is so much free radio about. It is a fair question, but in fact, similarities can be made with cable TV and broadcast television. Why do people pay for that? Is it the sound quality? Or the content? Or what? A lot of cable TV is rubbish as well. Sports coverage, possibly.

At least the preponderance of satellite radio is free of commercials. That has to be worth a few dollars a month and it is in fact a large selling point. Many people cite the lack of commercials as one of their foremost reasons for moving to satellite radio.

It is likely that all big league sports coverage will move to subscription only over the next few years. This will inevitably be carried out with the utilization of satellite radio. American football, soccer, baseball, basketball will all either get their own nationwide stations or be bundled with other stations

People are bored with with the amount of advertising on AM and FM radio, but at the end of the day, the main reason whether to get satellite radio or not for most people rests on content not even so much on the quality of the sound. If sport is removed from terrestrial radio and only available on satellite radio, then people, especially men, will move to satellite radio, which is exactly what happened with cable and satellite television.

June 1st, 2011Winter Sports – Skiing

Skiing is a very efficient way of travelling over long distances of snow and individuals have been using it as such for thousands of years. In fact, the first known instance of skiing was discovered in Norland, Norway and it has been dated back to 5000 BC. Skiing has been used for rapid travel, hunting and warfare ever since then and almost certainly before.

However, there are in essence three kinds of skiing, namely, Nordic, Telemark and Alpine skiing. Skiing was made popular for the international market by Sondre Norheim in the late Nineteenth Century, which coincided with Europeans becoming more adventurous in their choice of foreign holidays – well, for the rich at any rate.

Telemark skiing was developed in the Nineteen-Seventies from his ideas on skiing. However, the development of skiing techniques did not stop there. The Austrians, Mathias Zdarsky and Hannes Schneider were instrumental in expanding techniques further, although one cannot help thinking that the skiers of seven thousand years ago knew most of those techniques way back then as well.

As skiing has become more and more popular over the last sixty or seventy years, so more and more skiing locations have sprung up. There are skiing resorts all over the world, but the most famous and popular are in Europe, especially in Scandinavia and mainland Europe.

There are skiing locations in the Pyrenees on the border of Spain and France, in Croatia and in Italy, but the most famous resorts are in the Swiss and French Alps, which are actually adjoining. There are even skiing resorts in Scotland.

However, there are also equally decent skiing resorts in the United States, Canada and Asia. Wherever, you go skiing, there are items that a skier needs to get in order to be able to ski. a skier needs warm clothing and skiing apparatus. If you are a frequent skier, then you can buy your own clothing and your own apparatus, but for most skiers, renting is good enough. At least, if you rent equipment you do not have to carry lumpy gear around with you.

Resorts have ski runs of different skill levels, but you can also ‘go off piste’, which means ski the wild, untended slopes. This is a great deal more dangerous as these slopes are not tended, cleared or manned, so there is more chance of an accident and less opportunity that you will be found if you be into trouble. Avalanches are also less well predicted for off piste ski slopes.

Skiing is something that anyone can learn, but it is not easy to learn. The earlier that someone starts the better. Skiers take falls and older bones break more easily than younger ones. Novices fall more often than experts, so it makes sense to learn how to ski when you are young.

However, do not let that put you off, it is only a warning to be sensible. If you have always wanted to learn to ski, then go for it, but please do yourself a favour and learn the safety rules of skiing too.

The items required to detail the interior of a vehicle are: a vacuum ( a shop vac would be best), a bucket of hot soapy water and one of clean water, soft rags, window cleaner, a small paint brush, and a stiff bristle brush.

The first thing that should be done is removing any items that are not needed in the vehicle, this includes floor mats. This prevents things from being in your manner. Next you should vacuum everything you can. This includes of the floor, under the seat, rear window, speakers, seats, and all vents. This will save a great deal of cleaning time later.

The next step would be to begin washing the dash with a soft soapy rag, using the small paintbrush to get into the vents and any other small region that is hard to get to. Wipe these areas with the clean water. Be certain to get into the small grooves found on most steering wheels.

Next would come the doors. The same process can be used as on the dash. Clean in your own way for the remainder of the vehicle using these steps being sure to do the ceiling whilst cleaning the rest of the vehicle. Another area that is normally forgotten is the glove box. It is up to each person as to whether they clean it or not.

At this time washing all windows would be the next step. Use a soft rag and a good window cleaner. There are a lot of different brands to choose from, such as Windex and Safelite Auto Glass.

If the seats of your vehicle needs to be washed it can be done with the soapy water and a bristle brush. Dip the brush in the soapy water and begin scrubbing the seat and back. Do not saturate the fabric. Using the brush, clean the seat, back, and sides.

The small paint brush comes in useful to work into hard to reach parts. If you have a shop vac then proceed to vacuum the region washed. Repeat process if the seat is still dirty. After you are finished, vacuum the seats the best you can to absorb the surplus moisture.

Armour All, and other brands has a range of special cleaning products that you can purchase if you prefer to. Just be certain to match the cleaner to the type of fabric you have in your vehicle.

Following the instructions on those products is important. Next is scrubbing the floor. Using the bristle brush and soapy water, scrub the floors down and vacuum. This may have to be repeated a couple of times depending on how dire the floor is.

When working on the driver’s side be certain to clean all pedals. If there are floor shifters they have to be washed at this time. A good vacuuming will suck up what has been brought to the surface. The floor mats can be scrubbed and put back in the vehicle if the carpet is not too damp.

Are you thinking of organizing a car club? Or maybe reorganizing one? Car clubs are a great method for enthusiasts of a certain marque or sort of car to share their information.

Most car clubs are based on ownership of a marque of car or even ownership of a certain model, but it could also be a club for owners of cars of a particular age.

Therefore, the first thing to do while setting up or reorganizing a car club is to ascertain who the club is for. The more strict you make the club, the less members you are likely to get, which could be a difficulty unless you live in a large city.

It is a great deal of effort to set up a good set of rules and a mission statement, so it is best if you can get some help, possibly by finding a couple of others to create a small committee.

Maybe the easiest method of finding a couple more enthusiasts would be to either put an advert in the paper or go down to the showroom of the make you are interested in and talk to the sales staff.

The committee can decide on how what the club will focus on: for instance sports cars, Mercedes, pre-1945 or whatever. Then decide on how often the club will meet: monthly or quarterly or whatever and who is eligible to join: owners of these cars exclusively or enthusiastic non-owners too.

Other items to make a decision about would be whether there is a joining fee and / or annual membership fee; whether there will be a publication or newsletter or / and a website. What sort of activities and proceedings will the club hold? Races? Rallies? An annual dinner-dance?

A bring and buy sale of spare parts and accessories is usually a well-liked event. Members can bring along superfluous parts and accessories related to the car that the club is focused on. Where will you hold your meetings? In a church hall or in a spare room in a pub?

A website is a useful method of communicating with club members, but a blog is even better for allowing members to interact with every other. Best of all would be a website which only one person is allowed to update and a blog on the same domain name.

Every club member can be given a user name and password to the blog and then members can sign in and chat to each other in real time. This is not difficult to set up.

All you have to do is lease hosting space (less than $100 per annum) and purchase a domain name (less than $10). WordPress, a free blogging program, is normally available with the hosting.

Then you will have to either pay a designer to create a web site for you or get someone to do it for you. Many those under the age of 30 can design and put up a straightforward but effective website.

The website will become an important part of your recruitment drive and by and large reduce your marketing costs as well.

Scotland is famous for being the home of the Highland Games and golf and it is well-known for rugby and football and skiing. Skiing?, you may well wonder. Yes, it is true, Scotland has some of the very few resorts in the United Kingdom where you can have a holiday in a skiing resort. In fact there are a number of world class skiing resorts in Scotland. So, if you fancy touring Scotland, you can add skiing on your list for possible activities to do.

Scotland is not only a beautiful country which not just has ancient cities, but it also has beautiful mountains, lakes and wildernesses and the people are renowned for their hospitality. The language is not a difficulty if you are an English speaker, nor is the food, if you prefer British food although there are always foreign restaurants near at hand as well.

One such Scottish skiing resort is Aviemore which is located up north in the Cairngorms in the Scottish Highlands. In fact Aviemore is a perfect example of a world-class Scottish skiing resort. There is fantastic skiing for the morning and early afternoon, fantastic food and fantastic night life. People come to Aviemore to ski from all more than the world often combining it with a trip back to the homeland.

You are certain to forget where you are after a couple of days in Aviemore. You could be on any of the world’s best skiing slopes but without the complications of foreign languages and foreign food that many individuals find a difficulty. Other activities available in Aviemore are: observing Britain’s solitary free-grazing herd of reindeer, hiking, mountain biking, water sports, horse riding and pony trekking.

In fact Scotland has four other skiing centres, if you do not want to go to Aviemore in the Cairngorms. The are also skiing resorts at Nevis, Glencoe, Glenshee and The Lecht.

The Nevis Centre boasts skiing at 1190 metres (3,900 feet) and can normally offer skiing and snowboarding amenities until sometime in the spring. Besides the skiing, which caters to skiers of all levels of skill is the Gondola ski lift which affords stunning views on the way up. The dining and night life aspects of apres ski are well taken provided for as well.

Glencoe on Glencoe Mountain is Scotland’s oldest skiing resort opening its first ski lift in 1956. Although the resort has been there for fifty-odd years, it is by no means old-fashioned. It does have a propensity to cater for the more experienced skier. However, there are seven lifts and nineteen ski runs, so all skiers can find a slope for them. Look out for the run known as The Fly Paper the most thrilling black-graded run in Britain.

Glenshee is the biggest skiing resort in Scotland and the UK with twenty-one ski lifts and tows and thirty-six slopes. Glenshee has been in business since 1957 and offers a training school too, although there is something for all levels of skiers.

The Lecht is Scotland’s smallest ski resort, but it also offers a longer skiing season. There are runs for all grades of skiers and some of them run for twenty kilometers. If the snow is a bit sparse, they have amenities to create their own at The Lecht.

Hawaii is a beautiful location, we have all seen the films and the holiday photographs. The above ground scenery is dazzling, but what not so many individuals know is that the sub-aqua scenery is just as striking. The good thing is that you do not have to know precisely where to go to enjoy diving because the diving is brilliant everywhere on the islands.

Not just is the sub-aqua scenery beautiful, but the water is warm too – all year through. You will find millions of fish, aquatic flora, coral and ship wrecks, everything that divers like to look at. There will never be a diver that regrets having gone on a diving holiday in Hawaii.

Would be divers can best learn the hobby in Oahu. There are lots of diving schools and instructors there that have the right to grant a diving certificate after a day or two’s tuition. This is very fast, but the courses are comprehensive, so you can safely go shallow diving after acquiring your certificate. Whilst shallow water diving, you will see plenty of fish, plants and coral.

There are also a number of wrecks at Oahu, so you will be able to investigate these too, if you have a bit more experience. There are some huge ships down there and millions of fish.

One of the best locations to go scuba diving is Ka’awaloa Cove, which is in western Hawaii. The cove is just accessible by boat, but that is not difficult because there are several small boat businesses that offer a ferry service. Kona is another beautiful diving location on the big island.

Both of these regions cater for both the greenhorn and the expert. Kona is thick with plankton, which may not sound interesting in itself, until you understand that the plankton attracts giant manta rays. The rays are especially spectacular when seen on dives at night.

Red Hill and Kona also offer excellent opportunities for diving because there are underwater lava flows. The lava flows are best seen by daylight because that is when the sun shines off them giving them their name of Red Hills. They are only accessible by boat, but then that is not difficult either.

The smaller island of Maui also has great diving sites. Check out Molokini and its underwater volcanic crater. The crater is home for reef sharks, majestic sea turtles, numerous tropical marine fish and the spectacular giant manta rays again. This is one of the best dive sites on Hawaii and really has to be on your short list of must do dives.

The great thing about diving in Hawaii is that there is so much to see and do wherever you are situated. OK, the well-liked attractions are simply that, very well-liked, but numerous people like being with plenty of other individuals – after all there is safety in numbers, but Hawaii also has quiet areas which you can discover if you look and the diving will be great there too because the fish are the same and the water is as warm.

If you exhibit your car at car shows, you will be familiar with the tension that exhibitors experience in the last 20 minutes before the judges are expected to come around to look at your pride and joy. It is the same type of stress that animal showers and would-be beauty queens feel when it comes to the final moments.

It does not matter how much effort you have put in during the preceding twenty-four hours, the last twenty minutes is invariably the worst. You certainly do need to have detailed your car the day before the show, but here are some quick detailing tips to keep you busy during those last couple of minutes when you are at car shows.

Glass: check all the windows and the paintwork around the bottom of the windows. Little boys love cars, particularly beautiful cars and one of them may have pulled himself up on your car door’s ‘window ledge’ to have a better look inside. If he has dirty fingers, you have smudges.

Inspect your wing mirrors too, because teenage girls will assess their make-up in them and may even pull them off line.

Judges are impressed by sparkling glass, so keep one of those cloths for cleaning spectacles in a plastic bag in your pocket so that you can take care of any last minute smudges in a jiffy.

The cleaning cloths that you can get from opticians are ideal for this job as they clean without smearing and dry almost instantly. They are fairly cheap as well.

Chrome: the shiny chrome bumpers are just the correct height for kids to lay a hand on, so walk around the car with your optical cleaning cloth and just take care of any little finger prints. Likewise check the door handles and the boot lock, because they could all have had inquisitive hands on them.

Tyres: you will obviously already have cleaned your wheels, tyres and wheel arches, but you might notice a nick in a tyre at the last moment. You could fill an old nail varnish bottle with black paint (and one with white paint, if you have white-wall tyres), then if you see a blemish at the last moment, you can paint over it using the tiny brush affixed to the top of the nail varnish bottle.

Rubbish: check the region for rubbish like plastic and paper bags that could blow under your car. Of course, it is not technically your fault if someone has thrown their polystyrene hamburger box under your car or if a crisp packet gets blown against one of your wheels, but it still does not look good, so pick up any papers up wind of your car and check underneath for litter louts’ rubbish.

When you see the judges on the car next door, stop fussing and calm yourself down. Take a couple of deep breaths and get ready to be genial and helpful towards the judges.

They will almost certainly have a couple of questions about your handiwork and this is your time to bathe in the glory of all your hard work.

A great deal of individuals detail or wash their car for aesthetic reasons and that is all very well, but there are far more important reasons for detailing one’s car. Most individuals spend roughly the same percentage of their money on a car. I mean that as they get a better job, they tend to buy a better car. Therefore a car is a sizable investment for most people.

It makes sense to safeguard one’s investments and even if you cannot make your car grow in value, you can at least take every measure in your power to reduce the speed of its depreciation. One of the foremost ways of doing this is by frequent maintenance and detailing a car ought to be regarded as part of your regular maintenance programme.

Car detailing as part of a maintenance programme also has a safety aspect. You assume that if your brakes are not serviced in the correct manner that there is a greater chance that they may fail one day and you ought to expect that if you do not take proper care of your car’s bodywork that it might rust and be less protective in case of a crash.

So having said that here are a few tips to help you protect your investment and perhaps even your life.

Windscreen wipers should be kept clean and unworn at all times. Have you ever sat in a car with bad windscreen wipers while it is raining? It is very frightening. If it has not rained for a while, then you might not have noticed the dust and grit building up under the windscreen wiper blades.

This abrasive dirt will soon score your windscreen, especially if someone accidentally switches them on when it is not raining. A scratched windscreen is bad enough, but if the blades are worn, they will not clear the rain sufficiently for you to see properly either.

You should make a point or regularly lifting the blades from the windscreen and inspecting and cleaning them. You will soon see if the rubber is starting to perish or fray and you will also see a line of solidified dust (or worse) on the glass. Wet both the wipers and the glass before trying to wash them in order to soften up the dirt.

Use a sponge or chamois leather on the glass, but use an old rag on the rubber blades, because they can ruin a new sponge or expensive chamois leather. Keep this rag for cleaning other abrasive parts of the car like the wheels, number plates and bumpers.

When you are cleaning the windows of your car, it is a good idea to get into the practice of finishing the cleaning of the outside with vertical wipes and the inside with horizontal ones (or vice versa, if you like). This way you will know which side those maddening, and often distracting, streaks are.

While we are on the topic, it is not a good idea to hinder your view by having furry dice or anything else hanging from your rear-view mirror. These symbols are meant to bring good luck and safety, but they are the exact opposite. Similarly nodding dogs and big speakers on the rear shelf are obtrusive and window stickers of any kind are silly. Transparent glass is meant to be seen through not looked at.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on lots of topics, but is now concerned with auto interior detailing. If you want some suggestions on detailing cars come over to our website now at Detailing Car Interiors.

If you go to a car show, expect to become impressed. After all, that is the whole purpose of putting on the show in the first place. Having said that, you will also see excellent, if not the best, examples of four-wheeled vehicles. However, the question is: should you buy a car at a car show?

Well, that is not a simple question to answer, because it depends on you and the circumstances. It is never a wise idea to buy on a whim, but if you see something that you have really been searching for for some time, then you may have to buy it there and then or wait a long time to get another opportunity.

What do they recommend? Never go shopping whilst you are hungry? The same saying could be applied to this situation and the outlay will definitely be hundreds if not thousands of times more than a cart full of shopping.

Basically, the criterion is: do you really know what the car is worth? The owner of the car will know what the car is worth and he or she will also know that you are seeing the car in the best light. The owner will also have paid to enter the exhibition, the price of which will also be added to the cost of the car.

Therefore, if you are buying something special like a custom car, then you will almost certainly be paying a premium at a car show, but if you are purchasing a stock car, you might be more likely to get a discount. So in general, a car show is likely to be more expensive, the more customized the car.

This means that you need more knowledge, the more specialized the car is that you want to purchase. Anyone with enough money can buy a Ford Prius straight off the production line, you just have to look in the Ford catalogue and look up the list price, but who knows the price or value of a customized, hand-made 1968 Morgan 2-Plus-2?

There will be other concerns at a car show as well. The owner of the car may be actually busy talking to people about the car. Enthusiasts will have lots of questions about the car’s engine capacity, coachwork and age et cetera, so you might find it hard to get any attention. The other thing is that you will not be able to take the car for a test drive whilst it is at the exhibition.

You might find that the owner does not really take you seriously. This is almost certainly because he or she meet dozens of ‘tyre kickers’ each month. Everybody wants to know the answers to questions such as: how long did it take to do that? How much did it cost to do that? How much is the car worth? Is the car for sale?

You will certainly not be the first to ask these questions. The owner has heard it all before. If you are serious, get some contact details, take some photos and promise to be in touch after the show. Use the time you have left to do some research and check whether you have a bargain on your hands or whether you just had a narrow escape.

Car rentals are an indispensable part of many business and pleasure travellers? lives. If you are staying at a location away from home for more than a day and you need to get around, then hiring a car is a less expensive alternative than using taxis, particularly if you are fairly confident in traffic. However, there is a trade-off with some firms.

A lot of automobile rental firms are rather expensive, but they do offer convenience. Then there are budget or cheap automobile rentals. This article is about how to get the most out of these cheap automobile rental car firms.

There are car rental firms that allow you to set the price that you want to pay for renting a car and then they will go out and find the best deal that they can in that price range. These are not exactly car rental firms, they are go-betweens., but they can present great deals.

You might try bundling your automobile rental into the cost of your travel or hotel bill. Many airlines and hotel chains have tie-ins with automobile rental companies and they can therefore offer great savings.

If you like to organize everything yourself, check out the Internet. You doubtless already know that some of the best deals in every market are to be found on the Internet. You can often get special offers on the Internet that are only accessible to Internet shoppers. These can be discounts, upgrades, increased mileage or delivery.

One means of getting something is to ask for it. As a popular saying goes: ?If you don?t ask, you don?t get?. Very often you will get a discount just by asking for it. Remarkable, but true. If you are paying by credit card, it is worth asking whether your credit card entitles you to a discount as well. Never forget that many large firms have tie-ins.

It is well-worth checking the condition of the vehicle very carefully before driving away, otherwise you may end up paying for damage that you did not cause. If there is damage, point it out to the renter and if you think it is necessary, take photographs of the damage with the rental assistant pointing to it.

Be aware of what your own insurance policy covers. Frequently, your own car insurance will cover you driving a rental automobile, so why pay again? Read your own automobile insurance policy with care before you travel and take a copy of its terms and conditions with you.

Turn up very early in the morning to pick up your car. Most people return rental cars at the last moment, so if you turn up early, they may not have a cheap car for you and will have to upgrade you.

Make certain that the automobile is fitted with a good, working automobile alarm. This will ensure that you are not penalized if the rental car is stolen, when it was not your fault. By following all or at least some of these tips, you should save some money on cheap car rentals.

Orchids have the reputation of being difficult to grow in the West. Gardeners shy off from attempting to grow them because they think that they are difficult to grow and because they are costly. This is easily understood, but there is more to the story than that. The fact is that most countries have their own native orchid species, so it is possible to grow orchids wherever you live, if you pick the right variety.

The other side of the coin is that what most gardeners in the West think of as orchids are orchids from exotic countries and they can be a problem to grow. I say difficult to grow, but that is not the whole story either. If you can create an environment similar to where the orchids come from, it need not be a problem at all.

A lot of the spectacular orchids are parasites, like mistletoe is a parasite plant in the temperate countries of the West. These orchids often grow on trees. In trees and on trees, that is. So, their natural environment is to become attached to the bark of a living tree or to get lodged in the fork of a branch.

The orchid will then draw its nutrients and water from the inside of its host much in the same way as does a flea or a bed bug. Another thing to be aware of is that if a plant lives under the canopy of a tree, it seldom, if ever, experiences direct sunlight. Wooded areas are also fairly humid. It is also worth mentioning that exotic plants usually come from warm or hot countries.

Therefore, if you can recreate these conditions of providing warmth, humidity and a host, growing foreign orchids should not become that much of a problem. And in truth, it is not, although in the West it might necessitate a greenhouse.

Thailand is home to many parasitic orchids, most of which grow on trees in the forests, which are warm to hot and humid, but most people do not live under those conditions. Most Thais live in either open villages or cities where conditions are not favorable to growing jungle orchid varieties. However, most Thai gardeners do not need or even have greenhouses.

Instead, if a Thai gardener is interested in nurturing jungle orchid varieties, he or she will buy (or acquire) the root complex of a dead tree which also has a tree stump of, say, a metre attached. They will then move this tree stump in to a very shady place, say, under a shelter and grow their wild jungle orchids on that.

How is that done?, you may ask. Well, it is actually simplicity itself. First you acquire a sample of the orchid and then you affix it to the stump with a ‘strap’ of something that will both permit the orchid to expand and to breathe. Most Thais use some of the fibres from inside a coconut.

The gardener will belt the baby orchid to the stump using the coconut matting as a band-aid with either staples or small nails. By the time the orchid has buried its roots into the host, the matting will have rotted away, as will almost certainly the staples.

The only thing left to do is to keep the tree and the baby flower well watered so that it can suck the remaining nutrients out of the dead tree. They will thrive for numerous years under these conditions and the tree stump will be a living flower pot, of sorts.

One of the most vital aspects of scuba diving that a diver has to learn is how to set up the breathing tank. Divers do not use oxygen in their tanks, they use (or, increasingly, used to use) compressed air. However air is approximately 70 percent nitrogen and 30 percent oxygen and the nitrogen can cause nitrogen sickness under pressure, so more and more people are turning to Nitrox.

Nitrox is not air, but it is still made up solely of nitrogen and oxygen, although not in the same percentages, which you can vary. The difficulty with increasing the amount of oxygen in the mix is that there is a greater likelihood of suffering from oxygen toxicity the deeper you go. Therefore, the trade off is that the more oxygen you use, the shallower you may swim.

It sounds like a rough decision, you can suffer from either nitrogen or oxygen toxicity, take your choice. However, there is a third option and it is called Trimix. Trimix is the ‘air’ that deep sea divers make use of. It is a mixture of three gases, as its name implies: nitrogen oxygen and helium.

Helium is used as a form of filler. It does not do us any harm and it does not do us any good either, but it permits divers to take a lung full and it reduces the volume of nitrogen and the volume of oxygen thus reducing the chance of illness.

The only problem with helium is that it conducts heat five times more than oxygen and nitrogen. This leads some deep sea divers to suffer from a condition known as hyperbaric arthralgia. Hyperbaric arthralgia is a kind of joint pain that a number of divers experience as they go deeper than 100 feet in salt water.

Deep sea divers have to learn about the different Trimixes as part of their course, because one day they will be responsible for selecting the mix they use. The option is not only compressed air, nitrox and Trimix, because there are different ratios of the gases in Trimix to take into the equation as well.

For instance, a 10/70 Trimix will be made up of 10 percent oxygen, 70 percent helium (and 20 percent nitrogen). This form of mix is suitable for diving to a depth of 330 feet in salt water or 100 msw (metres in salt water). Fresh water is a little lighter than salt water. This does not count at lower depths, but it does after a hundred feet.

Breathing and gases are just one aspect of diving that you will have to learn if you want to go diving. Another aspect of diving that is linked with diving is the rate of ascent. Divers used to get taught not to come up faster than their smallest bubbles, which is about 60 feet per minute. However, many instructors now think that this is still too fast and recommend 30 feet per minute with a three minute wait at 15 feet.

There are different degrees of auto detailing. The cheapest degree might include only washing the outside, like a car wash; the next level might be doing the interior and the boot as well and the top level may include the inside, outside and the engine.

Then there are degrees of cleanliness within these categories as well. for instance, the lowest level might be to merely vacuum the carpets, but the highest degree may include taking them out and actually washing them.

Needless to say the amount of auto detailing you get will (or ought to) be reflected in the price. The lowest level may cost $75 and the highest degree $300 for an averagely dirty average car.

Larger and dirtier cars cost more. However, the car will be restored to its condition if that is at all feasible, so a good detailing before selling your car may reap rewards.

It is not too hard to learn how to clean the exterior of a car well, but it is more of a problem to do the inside because you will require specialist tools and small vacuum cleaner heads to get into all the nooks and crannies.

You may also want to wash the carpets without removing them which can be a royal pain, if you do not have that special apparatus.

You can definitely purchase the waxes, polishes, vinyl and leather cleaners and you can even purchase the apparatus, it is merely that you may find it costly to purchase and time-consuming to use.

Cleaning the engine is more or less just a matter of blasting the grease off the engine with a fairly weak pressure gun using degreaser in the (warm) water, so this requires more specialist equipment.

The brushes and sponges are all fairly normal as are the liquids and detergents, polishes and waxes.

Some auto detailing companies will also take care of small repairs like a stitch that has come loose in the upholstery or a slight scratch on the coachwork.

However, I think that all companies ought to at least bring these defects to the owner’s notice even if repair is not in the price. Repairing a minor scratch on a wing can save that wing from having to be replaced in the future. Likewise with tyres, if an operative spots a problem and reports it, it could save a blowout.

Waxing is an important topic. I think that there ought to be a wax incorporated in the shampoo, because it will run into all the crevices and create a seal against rainwater. I am all for applying a second coat of wax by hand to the larger areas as well both for protection and appearance.

Do not bother applying a low-cost wax by hand, because it will come off after a few rain showers. If you are going to do the job, do it in the correct manner using a high quality wax that will protect your paintwork from the sun’s bleaching rays, from the abrasion of wind-blown dust and from the oxidizing rain.

Do you drive around in style or in a sty? Do you take pride in your vehicle or are you going to wait for it to fall apart and then purchase a new one? Obviously it is your car, you do what you want but a tidy car is safer than a filthy one.

If you have soda cans and empty crisp packets rolling about the floor, they could interfere with your feet. If you do not keep the outer surface clean, rust will set in and your car will become less structurally sound – less able to withstand a collision.

So here are seven suggestions to help you valet your car. They might not all be life-savers, but they ought to all relieve some frustration and make your driving experience a bit more enjoyable.

1] Keep your windows clean and clear. You need as much forward, rear and peripheral vision as you can. Remove anything dangling from the rear view mirror and swap big speakers on the rear shelf for low, flat ones.

Remove all stickers from the windows especially the dopey one that says: ‘Drive Safely – Baby On Board’. No one is going to drive more carefully because you have a baby with you, that is your job!

2] If your antenna sticks, it is better to rub it with graphite powder than to squirt WD40 into it. The oil will only leak out and what stays will soon have dust sticking to it, which will cause it to stick more.

3] You get better results whilst cleaning, waxing or polishing, if you spray the liquid onto your rag rather than onto the car. Spraying directly onto the car creates concentrations in some areas which usually result in smears and lots of extra rubbing, meanwhile abrasive dust can be getting stuck on this excess and the motion of your cleaning may cause scratches. You also lose less spray to the wind.

4] When cleaning the glass, clean up and down on one side of the glass and side-to-side on the other so that you can see where the smears are. It could save you half the effort.

5] Clean bird droppings from your car as soon as you can. This is because they are very acidic and will attack your paintwork each time they become wet. Never park under a tree because of this and because the rain dripping through the tree, especially in warm weather, will bring sap or oil from the tree and it is quite hard to get rid of when it is dry.

6] While washing the exterior with a bucket of soapy water, begin on the roof, the bonnet and the boot; change the water and do one side of the car, change the water and wash the other. Never throw the residue dirty water in the bucket over the car or its wheels. This water is filthy, but you often see individuals do it.

7] Wash the engine from time to time. You will be happy you did if ever you have to get under the bonnet. The same goes for the spare wheel and keep an old pair of gloves in the wheel well for if you have to change a wheel.

Most individuals dream of going away on vacation to somewhere warm or even hot, however there are those who seek out the cold and the snow so that they can go skiing. Admittedly, many if not most of those who go skiing in the winter can also afford a summer vacation somewhere warm too. Skiing in the French Alps is one of the favourite choices of novice and practiced skiers alike.

But what if you cannot ski at all and would like to learn? Well, you could go the French Alps anyway and learn there or you could learn the fundamentals at home, maybe on an all-weather slope, so that you receive full value for money once you arrive in France. There are quite a number of all-weather nylon slopes dotted around most Western countries, usually situated at leisure centres.

If you learned how to get dressed, the basic moves and the safety aspects of skiing and being on snow, than you could get on with learning better techniques from the experts at the French Alps resort once you get there. This way you will not miss out on the excellent skiing in the French Alps, which along with the Swiss Alps, which it connects to, is one of the best regions for skiing in the world.

Learning how to come to a halt is a good idea, but before you can practice your stopping technique, you have to be moving, which can be fairly scary. This and health and safety codes are the first things that you will be taught when you take lessons either at home or in the Alps.

Knowing that you know how to come to a halt gives you the confidence to get you going and practicing other techniques like turning. You see, one of the difficulties with skiing is the novices, they tend to get in the way, so you need to look out for them and learn how to come to a halt before hitting them or how to go around them.

There are normally at least a number of types of slopes at these French alpine resorts ranging from moderate slopes for learners to steeper, faster courses with obstacles like trees and rocks for experienced skiers. The weather can alter in an astonishingly short time even within an hour, however at the best times of the year, the weather is normally fairly warm from about 10 AM until 2 PM.

This allows you time for a pre-breakfast walk, a leisurely breakfast and four hours on the slopes, before lunch and apres-ski entertainment. The evenings’ entertainment is legendary, which is another decent reason for a late beginning. French food and drink is world renowned and the food and drink in the French Alps is no exception.

Skiing is fairly physical and requires the aspirant skier to be fit and strong. Therefore, if you have let yourself go a bit, you might think it prudent to visit a gym for a couple of weeks before your vacation to get back into shape.

Twenty or thirty years ago, no-one in their right mind would have gone to Croatia, unless they were in the army, but that has all altered. Nowadays, Croatia is part of the European Union and is much more hospitable to tourists.

One of the tourist activities that Croatia is building its reputation on is skiing. It is a warmer country than northern France, Switzerland and Scandinavia, so it is possible to take a skiing vacation in the mountains and finish the holiday off with a week at the seaside.

One of the best skiing regions to visit is Zagreb and in particular Bjelolasica, which is where the Croatian Olympic skiing team trains. The facilities in this area are excellent and the prices are a lot cheaper than you would pay in either in the French or in the Swiss Alps or in Scandinavia. In fact Croatia offers great skiing facilities at a very affordable cost.

The Croatian skiing community is of very high standard and they know that they have to compete with the history of the more famous French and Swiss ski resorts so they really pull all the stops out to make certain that the tourists and sports people that come to their country derive value for money and would like to come back again.

They realize that word of mouth advertising is the best and the cheapest form of advertising that you can get.

Another well-liked Croatian skiing destination is Platak. Platak is situated nearer the Adriatic and is a little more expensive than Bjelolasica because it is a little cut off, but it just depends where you would like to go and what you would like to do.

Platak is a good all round skiing resort which has plans for improvements on a vast scale. Over the coming years, Platak will have more ski slopes of different levels of expertise and more hotels and chalets of all cost bands.

You would be forgiven for thinking that there might be a language barrier in Croatia and to be honest there can be, but the ski resorts are all staffed by people who have learned most of the common European languages. It shows how much can be done in twenty years if the government and the populace have the correct and the same point of view.

Croatia has a very varied cuisine, so tourists and skiers from all over the world ought to be able to find plenty of suitable food and drink. Croatia has a border with Hungary and their wine is very drinkable. All in all, Croatia offers decent skiing facilities at a knock down price, but just how long they will be able to offer these excellent facilities at these attractive prices remains to be seen.

If you are a serious skier, it could be worth going to Croatia and purchasing a time-share or some other sort of accommodation now before the inevitable price rise when the rest of Europe realizes how cheap skiing in Croatia really is.

May 5th, 2011Car Detailing Advice

By tradition, middle class suburbanites would wash the car on Sunday morning before going for a drive with the family in the afternoon. Some individuals took this task earnestly, but for most it was twenty or thirty minutes washing and polishing the outside and five minutes with the vacuum cleaner inside. These days a great deal more people expect a proper cleaning that in those days was reserved for the well-off.

However, having your car detailed or valeted is still not inexpensive, typically costing $75 for an average clean on an average sized car in average condition. When you start talking about a filthy SUV that has just been used to transport the school football team, detailing in the correct manner at a decent establishment can cost $300-$400.

Not a lot of people can afford to pay that out often, especially with the price of petrol being what it is, so here are a couple of car detailing tips to help you do it yourself (or get the kids to do it for you).

i] Take out anything that can be removed and vacuum the carpets. Then wash the windows on the inside and clean the seats, upholstery and dash with an appropriate cleaner, especially if the seats are covered in leather upholstery. Wash the items you removed, dry them and replace. Put a stick of slow-release air freshener in the glove compartment and close all the doors.

2] Hose your car down, particularly in the wheel arches and under the bonnet to remove the worst of the dirt and soften up anything that has gone rock-solid. Do not use a really strong power washer, ie one that is attached to a powerful pump. These power washers can blast grit away so hard that it scratches the paintwork. A regular hose attached directly to the mains is good enough

3] Check the mud under the wheel arch and blast it off with a slightly more powerful jet if yu have to. Do the wheels too, if they are bad. Once you can no longer see any build up of sludge, you can move on to the next stage.

4] Either mix a bucket of warm soapy water or attach a soap dispenser to your hose pipe. It is worth investing in proper car cleaner, because kitchen detergent could be too harsh for your car’s paintwork.

Do not try to save money on the amount of detergent you use, follow the manufacturer’s directions and apply it with a sponge or mitten. If you are using a bucket, be ready to change the water several times – you do not want to be rubbing grit into your paintwork.

Sponge down the car in sections starting with the roof and then rinse it off immediately. So, wash the roof, rinse it; wash a door panel, rinse it; move on and around your car until you get to the bottom – the bumpers and wheels.. You have to rinse immediately to stop a film of soap drying onto the paintwork, especially on a warm day.

Re-rinse the entire car in case you missed something. If you purchased a car wash with wax included, you are done, but if you would like the best finish, now is the time to wax on and then wax off.

Whether you are an amateur detailing your own car or a professional twelve cars a day, you should get well au fait with the chemicals used in the industry, because all chemicals are dangerous if misused.

However, safety is just part of the reason for getting to understand the chemicals used for detailing cars, you also have to know if someone is trying to sell you liquids that will or just cannot work.

There are a great deal of charlatans in any line of business and a fool and his money are soon parted. Knowing the chemicals used for cleaning cars will help you avoid being duped by suppliers.

For instance, you will often hear people say that you can clean the inside of a car using the liquid from just one bottle.

This is simply not true, especially if you have various fabrics inside the car like plastic door linings, fabric carpets and leather upholstery. It is just not feasible to clean all these different textiles well with just one liquid.

Surfactants are clever types of soap-like substances and consist of different ingredients, a little like combined shampoo and conditioner for humans. These surfactant molecules consist of two kinds a hydrophile and a hydrophobe. The hydrophobe is drawn to dirt and it tries to break it down, whilst the hydrophile envelopes the dirt so that it can be borne away.

The most common solvent known to man is water, but it has just a limited effect on grease, so in the case of grease, manufacturers turn to butyl and dilemonene, which is extracted from lemon and orange peel. These solvents are expensive, but they are fairly harmless and can be used on several surfaces.

Other fats, such as perspiration, can be washed away using animal fats that have been cured with a saponifier, which is usually a powerful alkaline. This does not sound very pleasant, but we have all used soap made from animal fats.

The animal fat mixes with the human fat (say sweat) and they dissolve into one another. The alkaline then breaks them down so that they can be borne away. You do this each day when you wash or take a shower.

The science of cleaning is quite a complex one once you begin looking into it, but why certain products are just effective for one type of job only becomes apparent when you do study it.

However, once you do find out what is actually going on and where the chemicals have come from, a lot of individuals wish that they had not taken the time to go into the topic.

In summary, and to keep it easy (more for my sake than for yours, I assure you) try to treat like with like. Be wary of using a chemical for other than its specified job without having conducted trials on out-of-sight patches. Endeavour to use petroleum based cleaners on oil; alkaline cleaners on organic materials and acids on non-organic materials.

Are you interested in coming closer to nature? Do you like walking and sleeping under the stars – or under canvas at least? If you do, then a walking or hiking and camping holiday may be just the thing for you. A hiking and camping holiday will get you out in the fresh air, permit you to observe nature first hand and cost you very little to boot. In short, hiking and camping are the ideal combination, if you are searching for a healthy, low-cost break outdoors.

Not just that but you can either go alone with a few good books, take a lover, take a friend or take the family with you. All in all, you have many options available to you if you want to trek off into the wild blue yonder on foot.

There are a couple of ways of tackling a vacation of this sort. You can either book into a hiking and camping site or you can literally only head off. If you have children with you then the camping site is a necessity, but otherwise the decision is yours, although it has to be kept in mind, that camping off site is or can be illegal. Trespass is definitely illegal as is causing a nuisance of yourself, putting wild animals under duress for no good reason, damaging trees or property and littering.

So, if you are new to hiking and camping, you will probably be better off going to a hiking and camping site or park. Do not be put off by this thought, some of them are truly immense. Check out the Poconos and other national parks for instance.

There is no doubt that price is a factor in the choice of a camping holiday for many young people, but it is hardly ever the sole reason why people like to get away and sleep under the stars. Going back to nature and bird- and animal-watching are other common reasons.

If you fancy this sort of holiday, it is worth remembering that hiking and camping have become extremely popular pastimes of late. They always were well-liked, it is true, but they waned in the Eighties and Nineties, and are seeing a resurgence now. Therefore, do your homework, see where you would like to go, get some brochures or look on line and book up early. Yes, nowadays you have to book up early to get into the best hiking and camping sites again.

A final note of warning, if you decide to go off into the wilderness outside a park, let people know where you are. Take your mobile phone and a couple of fully-charged extra batteries and say when you are going to phone in that you are safe and make certain that you abide by it. It is very expensive if Air-Sea Rescue are called out on unnecessarily.

Security is a huge problem these days. Everyone considers themselves at risk in some way or another and there are items on the market to alert one to these risks. One such system is the vehicle burglar alarm. Car burglar alarms have been around for quite a while, but these days they are very advanced. There are also dozens, even hundreds of types of car alarms.

Car burglar alarms are a deterrent to most vehicle thieves or vehicle burglars, but they will never hinder the single-minded, professional crook. There are two kinds of vehicle thieves. There are those who want to steal your car and there are those who want to take its contents. Then there are opportunist car thieves and professional car thieves, some of whom steal to order.

In general, the more functions that a vehicle alarm has, the more costly it will be. Some vehicle alarms will have vibration sensors, some will have internal motion sensors and others will have immobilizers, which prevent the engine from being started under certain circumstances. Nowadays, most new vehicles come with a car alarm built into the vehicle?s electrical system.

Some of these set-ups are extremely sophisticated, while others, usually cheaper models, are quite basic. The vehicle alarms on a Bentley, for instance, use digital finger-printing, or biometrics, to open the door and switch on the ignition.

If your car did not come with a factory-fitted car alarm, you should add one as even quite sophisticated vehicle alarm systems are comparatively cheap now. However, most secondary auto alarms are fairly cheap because they still have to be fitted. If you cannot fit a car alarm yourself, the cost of installation is usually more that the initial purchase price.

If you want to source your own vehicle alarm, whether you want to fit it yourself or not, the cheapest place to find one is on the Internet. However, because you will not have sight of the alarm before purchasing it, you should take additional care.

The first point is not to treat the Internet as an occasion to acquire the very cheapest alarm possible. It is a far better plan to use the Internet to buy a model of car alarm that you already know of at the lowest price.

There is a big difference. First find out which car alarm suits your vehicle and then go surfing for the cheapest retailer. When you have located a few places that sell the item you want quite cheaply, then you should look at the location of the retailer.

It can be a huge advantage to have the merchant near at hand, if there is a problem with the article. This can be even more of a problem with cheaper devices.

Next you should inspect the terms and conditions of the retailer?s sales and returns policy, especially if the retailer is located in a country that is not your own. It is always safer to buy from your own country if it has good consumer protection laws.

Any time of the year is a good time for planning family holidays, but you ought to plan well ahead in order to get the exact holiday that you want. The perfect family holiday really depends on the sort of family that you have: is it a young family; are the children all boys; are the children and the parents for that matter daring or not; are they sporty or laid back?

Some people who do not get enough excitement during the year, like say office workers, prefer to go on adventure vacations when that time of the year comes about, whereas people with dynamic jobs may want to laze about, say on a cruise, although cruising is not the perfect holiday for young children. There again, you might prefer to go on a holiday where you can take your dog.

In fact, it does not matter where you go or what you do, family vacations are times for giving the children special memories that will remain with them for ever and family vacations also allow some very busy parents to bond with and get to know their children better.

Family vacations can also be used to expand children’s horizons: city kids can go and look at the countryside or the seaside and vice-versa or you could take them abroad so that they can actually meet foreigners and learn a few words of another language.

One holiday that would permit adventure and seaside lounging around would be a trip to swim with dolphins at Discovery Cove, Florida, which is located near SeaWorld. People are shown around Discovery Cove in small classes so that you get to ask all the questions you want.

One hitch is that children under six years of age are not permitted to swim with the dolphins, but other than that, all the equipment you will need and lunch are included in the cost. It is not especially cheap to swim with dolphins because dolphins are costly to feed and keep in a healthy condition, but it is definitely an unforgettable experience. It is a boon that all the apparatus is included in the price covering things like wet suit, snorkel, flippers and even towels.

However, you have to pre-book, you cannot only walk in off the street. This is so that it is possible to be certain to have enough team-leaders and enough equipment for everyone. Once you have swum with the dolphins and played with them, the rest of the day will be yours to enjoy the beautiful beaches, explore the shallows and study the wild birds that are to be found on the property in profusion.

There is also a work training programme for those who think that they want to take up this kind of job. Job training or job experience permits you more time with the staff and the animals behind the scenes so that you can get a sense of how such an establishment is run. If you are interested in a day out like these two cases, why not look them up on the Net for more details?

The precise origin of Berkhamsted Castle is uncertain. It was probably built by Robert, Count of Mortain and Earl of Cornwall, who was the half-brother of King William I. Robert became wealthy from the Norman Conquest in 1066 and grew even more rich during the following years.

However, his son made a big slip-up by backing Robert of Normandy against King Henry I. Henry confiscated the castle and its grounds and put it up for rent. A number of wealthy families rented it from time to time, one of whom was Thomas Becket.

Berkhamsted Castle is of the classic style for its age in that it is a motte and bailey castle. The motte is a tall conical mound of earth on which would stand the last line of defence, the keep. Two ditches surround the bailey with a rampart in between. The ditches may or may not have been full of water.

The motte and bailey and its keep were the ancient equivalent of a modern strong or safe room. If the outer concentric walls of the castle were breached, the family occupying the castle and their most trusted soldiers would flee into the keep and raise the drawbridge. Any would-be attackers now had to advance across open ground, in effect a killing field.

Then the invaders would have to traverse a ditch or a moat under weighty fire, climb over a rampart and swim another moat. If they got that far they would face a sheer keep wall with no windows doors or toe-holds whilst a withering shower of rocks and arrows poured down upon them from a great height.

The keep at Berkhamsted Castle has been taken away quite some time ago. It has to be remembered that castles were symbols of foreign oppression and were fiercely hated by the indigenous locals. The first castles or forts really were Roman; then came, Saxon forts and castles and finally Norman castles – all owned by marauding foreigners.

So once a castle was ruined or badly damaged, it was not unusual for the locals to pillage the ruins in order to build a new cottage for their family or a new cowshed for their livestock. It was easier to steal the rocks from the dilapidated castle than quarry them themselves. So, the original rocks that were Berkhamsted Castle are probably to be found under centuries of plaster in the near-by local farmhouses.

Having said that, there are still parts of the original flint wall from the time of Thomas Becket’s occupancy of the castle. The bits of stone were probably too small to be worth stealing.

The remnants of three semi-circular towers flank this wall which ran from the motte to the bailey. They too lie in ruins although the foundations show what they were. There are also the ruins of a barbican at the north end of the bailey.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of castles in the United Kingdom. Most of them are in ruins but some are very well preserved and some are even still lived in, like Windsor Castle for example.

An aspiration of lots of the world’s skiers is to go on a skiing vacation in France. Some of the world’s most famous and best downhill ski slopes are in the French Alps. The French Alps are contiguous to the Swiss Alps, so if you have the time you could visit both on the one vacation. The French and the Swiss Alps are the most sophisticated in the world. English is spoken in both regions, but French is the local language in both the French and the Swiss Alps.

When you book your skiing vacation in the French Alps, it may be your first skiing holiday and you may be a bit worried about investing in all the costly skiing equipment that a skier needs.

However, it is a groundless worry because you can hire everything you require for your skiing vacation at most ski resorts. It is never difficult to hire skis, ski boots and ski poles, but you can frequently hire goggles and warm clothing as well.

It is important to find out what you need to take yourself and what you can hire because the temperature drops rapidly and radically in the Alps as the sun goes down. In fact, the midday can be fairly warm, but by the mid afternoon it can be really cold and the nights can be lethal.

Prices for hiring apparatus vary, but strive to obtain a fixed deal that you are comfortable with before you go. It is likely that going in off the street is the most expensive way of hiring the skiing apparatus that you need.

One tip is to make certain that your mobile telephone is always fully charged and that you have enabled ‘roaming’, which is the ability for a mobile phone to work abroad. If you become lost or injured in the snow, it could get dangerous very quickly.

One of the most famous skiing resorts in the French Alps is Val d’Isere. The slopes here are well-known all around the world and cater for all levels of skill and experience. Ski resorts such as Val d’Isere have all the contemporary facilities that a skier expects, such as ski lifts, clothing and apparatus rentals, restaurants, bars, shops, travel agencies, and much more besides. The resort at Val d’Isere is the one to beat for ski resorts all around the world.

Language is not a difficulty for most tourists who would like to visit the French Alps as all the foremost European languages are spoken there. Food should not be a difficulty either as French cuisine and French wine is some of the best in Europe. If you make a decision to go on a skiing holiday in the French Alps, you will have a great time.

Make certain that you acquaint yourself with the safety rules of skiing and the particular resort you are going to and reserve part of your day for exploring the rich culture and fine restaurants of the French Alps.

April 20th, 2011Auto Stereo Systems

It is a simple term – car stereo – but on the whole people pay more consideration to the car stereo device than they do to their home stereo. Many people are fairly content with a mediocre home stereo and will never mention it in conversation, but the car stereo! Well, that is a another kettle of fish. People want speakers in each door, sub-woofers front and back and a graphic equalizer.

The majority of modern cars come with some form of car stereo already fitted, but these can be quite basic systems.

In the early days of auto audio systems, car stereos were not much more than smaller versions of indoor, home stereo set-ups. However, the environment was completely different and musical purists could tell that they were getting a raw deal. The speakers were too close together and the vibrations from the car?s engine rattled everything apart. Speakers were puny and frequently blew.

Enthusiasts began to demand better quality car stereo set-ups . The notion of a dedicated car stereo, if not yet the product itself was born.

Some vehicle manufacturers include their own, factory-installed brands of audio system. BMW falls into this category. All of BMW?s cars are supplied with a BMW car audio system. Many top car makers like to maintain this level of control over the quality of their vehicles.

Other car manufacturers, like Mercedes, prefer to leave the production and technology of such secondary vehicular accessories to third parties such as Blaupunkt.

Blaupunkt, a German company, takes this level of accountability very, very seriously. It is a huge mark of prestige that they have won the contract to supply car audio systems to companies like Mercedes. This reputation gains them many more sales from people who desire the same quality that is linked with Mercedes luxury vehicles.

Most of the normal set-ups these days include a multi-band radio and a CD player, which may or may not have a CD auto-changer in the boot of the car. The most modern car audio systems may also have MP3 and Internet access. These more recent stereo units usually allow the driver to plug in external media devices containing music or other files.

If you have an older car, you may want to upgrade your car stereo system to that of something that better fits your requirements. This could be accomplished by simply changing the speakers or even adding further speakers.

However, you may think that it is easier or just better to just change the whole caboodle. There are many options regarding car stereos, but if you cannot perceive the difference then there is no real point.

After all, music should not be a diversion from the main reason for sitting in a car in the first place, which is to travel from A to B safely.

April 17th, 2011Going Skiing in Europe

Europe is the birthplace of skiing. The first drawings of a skier were found in a cave in Nordland, Norway. The drawing has been dated at 5000 BC. Norway was almost certainly the home of skiing or what is known as Nordic Skiing anyway.

Alpine or downhill skiing probably comes from central Europe in the neighbourhood of Switzerland. There are such a lot of skiing resorts in Europe that there is a fantastic number of slopes for each level of experience.

You can ski in almost every country in Europe. The least famous skiing resorts are almost certainly in Scotland, but they do have them and the most well-known resorts are in the French and Swiss Alps, which are actually the same place, but they extend over two different countries.

The French and The Swiss alps are the most developed for luxury and are also the most costly. Not far east from there is Austria which, although less famous is also a magnet for skiers from Eastern Europe.

If you want skiing at a more affordable rate try Italy up on the Swiss border. There you will see practically the same skiing conditions as in the French and Swiss Alps but with Italian food and language, which means less English is spoken though, if you see that as a downside.

Approximately the same cost is Andorra which is Catalan (Spanish to you and me, but not to them). Andorra sits in the Pyrenees Mountains with borders on France and Spain. The Spanish influence is the greater of the two. Skiing in Andorra is renowned for its teaching. It is a fantastic place to learn skiing or to take the family.

If you would like to visit a rising star in the skiing firmament, go to Croatia. Skiing in Croatia is also among the most reasonably priced in Europe. The facilities are excellent, but local wages are low which keeps the costs down. The food is good and so is the wine, though not maybe a match for French, Italian or Spanish cuisine.

Bulgaria is another rising location on the skier’s map. Skiing is not well commercialized in Bulgaria but the locals have been skiing for centuries, it is merely that they are only just beginning to learn how to commercialize it. The locals are friendly, but do not expect much English to be spoken.

We must not forget the home of skiing, Norway and the rest of Scandinavia. Expect top class amenities in Scandinavia with top class prices to match. The locals are very friendly, but may not speak English. The food is more probable to be local as well. You are more likely to find decent skiing conditions all year round in Scandinavia as well.

There are so many skiing resorts in so many European countries, that if you wanted to, you could organize a skiing tour of Europe. If you wanted to ski in Scandinavia and Andorra, you would have to fly, but you could do the Swiss, French and Italian Alps. Or Austria and Bulgaria or Bulgaria and Croatia.

Landscape architecture plays an important role in the development of all contemporary cities. The principles of landscape architecture are used in order to create open ‘breathing spaces’ so the city has some fresh air and does not look cluttered. Landscape architecture is taught in Thailand and is recognized as a profession offering professional qualifications at degree level.

If someone wants to practice as a landscape architect in Thailand, then he or she has to have a bachelor’s qualification in landscape architecture from one of the two universities offering the course. Chulalongkorn University and Thammasart University turn out around 100 post graduates between them in landscape architecture each year.

Bangkok is home to most of Thailand’s landscape architectural firms. There are around thirty substantial businesses and about eighty freelance landscape architects. Many of the post graduates would like to continue their study or gain more experience abroad before settling down to work in Thailand. In order to effort as a landscape architect in Thailand, one needs to derive a license from Thailand’s official Association of Architects.

The Thai Association of Architects plays an vital function in maintaining standards of landscape architecture. The Thai government, both local and national, employ landscape architects to help with the design of such projects as highway development, inner city renovation and airport design. On a more understandable degree, landscape architects are concerned with the Royal Flora Expo in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.

The Association of Architects in Thailand is a private organization but it works hand in glove with the Ministry of the Interior. It assists the government regulate four professions which can have an effect on the environment and one of these is the profession of landscape architecture. However, landscape architecture does not create up 25% of the Association’s work. At 15% of the association’s workload, it is fair to assume that landscape architecture is under represented in Thailand.

The Association of Architects issues licenses to applicants based on the results of three concepts. These concepts are education, experience and examination. The notion of education is satisfied by gaining a BA in landscape architecture. Then the applicant has to provide evidence of work experience and finally, the association has its own examinations which the landscape architect also has to pass.

Landscape architecture is still in its infancy in Thailand. That is to say that, landscape architecture has merely recently started being applied to public developments. There have been landscape gardeners working on the gardens and palaces of rich Thais for centuries, only like in each other country with a wealthier ruling class.

Two of Thailand’s most famous landscape architects are Somwang Leevanjikul and Chanvudhi Varavam, both of whom have been involved in substantial government projects in Thailand using their skills in landscape architecture to create Thailand’s cities and countryside a better looking place to live.
